Phantasm Spiders

Another weeks end see’s more spiders join us on the battlemap and the star of the show is the Phantasm Spider. There are a few other encounters that could be listed here but these little, weak and (actually not there) spiders love to swarm on living prey. But don’t let them tie you down as there are other more dangerous things lurking around the corner. So in order to not get distracted too heavily let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Phantasm Spiders

The area that the party are fighting within is next to where all the prisoners are kept. They can be heard calling out for aid or, simply calling out continuously. This really increases the difficulty of paying attention to what’s going on around them with the noise generated from the captives. The DC to detect the illusionary Phantasm spiders is high because of that, but I would also remove passive perception checks to detect the stealth attempts of the creatures sneaking up on them. They are distracted quite heavily so active vigilance will be required here.

The phantasm Spider is created by the Lord of the Pit. These creatures are not-quite illusions but are treated much the same. Convincing enough as they all die and the mind makes the party believe that they are lethal enough to convince the players they are real through physical stimulus.

However a successful investigation check (DC 18) will reveal them as illusions and they will cease to inflict any damage or, even hamper the party member when moving through the illusionary spiders. True sight will also see this and Witch sight (or detect magic) will detect them as being entirely magical – but not if they are illusions as such.

Because of their low HP and lack of damage they are best in swarms, Dozens of spiders attacking at once to make the party feel godlike when a single attack kills several spiders at once. It aids to the feeling of a standoff against a hoard of creatures.

And some old friends, the drider and Ettercap. Back again for another adventure this week these stealthy creatures will aim to try and capture the party while they are distracted fighting the Phantasm Spiders.

Now the other creature that may make an appearance in the tunnels is a great stalker of the underdark – the displacer beast. Now this creature needs no real introduction other than to say its can be a mean piece of work.

Thanks for coming back tonight for another fun night in the spiders web. Don’t forget to come back this weekend for some D&D content and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Cindermare and its Rider

Tonight we have a small reveal for some of the creatures for this weeks encounter, the Cindermare and its Rider! This deadly duo has a few tricks up its sleeve which will make it a challenge to any Level 9-11 party. But when we throw in the other creatures it will be truly horrific!. So grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s encounter!

The Cindermare and its Rider

No matter how I look at the Butcher there are a few choices that could make it nearly impossible to beat. So I scaled down from what I originally had and decided to change some of the original legendary actions I had worked out into mobility defining ones. A Elf lord turned cinder-wraith should be mobile as he was in life but with the undead-spookiness that undeath grants.

All the better to enact a final curse with I suppose.

The Butcher created in tetra-cube.

The Cindermare is really just a reskinned nightmare. Despite this I have removed its ability to shed light and changed it up, being a creature that swallows a fire like soot does to cinders in a fire. It has some of its riders abilities of incorporeality but not as much and its not much of a war-beast and more of stylish ride for the Butcher.

Thanks for joining me tonight. Don’t miss coming back for the next few days as I, hopefully, finish up this Zine for a Saturday D&D session and also, hopefully, publishing a Zine from the lost archives. So don’t forget to drop back in for that and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

From the Pits they climb

This Friday we meet the creatures from some peoples nightmares and from the pits they climb!

So this has been a week in the making but it would have been obvious from the description of the city, where its situated and the update from a few weeks back (the dark below). So get ready with some bug spray, a giant shoe or a swatter along side your coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Now first the obvious one – Driders. These creatures are pretty foul abominations that dwell in the underdark and they played a bit of a spotlight role in the previous mentioned post. These half-drow-half-spider creatures are like a nightmarish centaur… but no where near as nice.

Although not as hard hitting or deadly in a single round of combat as some of the other creatures we have seen these all-terrain murder machines are still as deadly as many. With their natural defences, mobility and the ability to cast spells these creatures make great foes for a big encounter, or several.

The source of a few home-brew monsters in my time this next visitor to Kalehgrul is another monstrocity in its own right. The ettercap, while not as strong as a drider, can be a deadly assassin and in this situation where there are plenty of streets, stalls and… let’s face it, plenty of places for these creatures to crawl up from they can be lethal assassins.

So I have a new toy to play around with something that should really shape up my Dungeons and/or lairs for dragons so that will have to do for tonight! Tomorrow we look deeper into the spiders web to see what’s going on, hopefully get an update from my campaign and perhaps more. So don’t forget to come back for that and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Raiders from Kalehgrul

Tonight we get a glimpse at some of the Raiders from Kalehgrul. These are a odd bunch of mercenaries with a twist. Its lead by a mage and a young drow priestess who may be key to the next part of this adventure. So don’t let me keep you here and sit down grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s adventure!

Raiders from Kalehgrul

The drow mercenaries will act more like skirmishers than real fighters. Darting quickly around the battlefield and launching a volley from their hand crossbows. Very rarely will one engage in melee combat with their short sword when there is an opportunity to stay at a safe distance.

Drow created in tetra-cube.

The heavier hitters of the force will be the Duergar. Deep dwarves are resilient, strong and have the nasty habit of increasing their size which makes them a long stronger than they are when shorter! These warriors are not afraid to get into melee but also not dumb enough to realise they aren’t getting paid enough to die.

Duergar – created in tetra-cube.

Lastly the Drow priestess that leads the fight, with a mage close behind her is here to ensure that (her families – spoiler!) orders get executed. However she wasn’t planning on the adventurers being there!

Guardian of the Well

Now leading into the weekend, in which I have another Age of Sigmar Tournament to go to, I have something that we can raise for this weeks encounter, a guardian of the well as it were. With a vested interest in keeping the well working, well malfunctioning in its current stage this guardian is also keeping the true purpose of the well barely holding on. But the darker forces at play work against the guardian and perhaps, so do the party… But enough on that, let’s sit down grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s adventure!

Guardian of the Well

340FrGuOTWe

The Guardian of the well is a vampire who wishes to have an army to keep the swamps clean from the living, well most of the living. this one will be swampy themed, dressed in sodden mossy clothes, looks as if it drowned once or twice just to come back to life. Using the canopy and dense trees of the swamp the creature flitters between trees and ruins to strike at the party. since the water is stagnant it gets to use its full powers as well and use them it shall.

However, it simply wants to keep the well of souls as it is, churning out undead and malfunctioning. But we will see more of that in the Zine.

In addition to the normal minions of the Dark Prince giant frogs (zombie or otherwise, zombie in this case) would be also a good fit for the vampire to summon. These creatures would listen to the vampire in the same ay as the other minions summoned by children of the knight ability (same number as wolves).

Zombie Frog – created in tetra-cube.

In addition to the above two stat blocks all the other zombies from last weeks encounter (A variety of undead) would also be fitting. Such as, once again, the humble zombie.

As with the last few adventures there is a bit more to add to the final product of this. So you will have to hang out for the final Zines for this adventure. So don’t forget to come back this weekend for more D&D content and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

A Variety of Undead

This weeks Friday Fight-night brings forth with it a variety of undead. Last week we had something a bit different where as this week we have something more familiar, but varied. Zombies are great. Yup, as a DM I find the zombie template a great thing to add something more to something that was already interesting to deal with. But what if these things are not something typically dealt with? Well that’s something that I can get behind. So let’s sit back grab a relaxing brew and ease into another weekend.

A Variety of Undead

339FrAVaOUn

Undead reptiles. The crocodile features in a few horror movies and as well as the zombie. What about zombie crocodiles? these tough creatures are even worse not that they are undead as they are a bit more difficult to kill.

The above images were created in tetracube

Reanimated snakes as well as the true denizens of the Carrion swamps, the lizardfolk are also a pest that the party will have to deal with. While not tough they can provide a threat to the party if they are not prepared to deal with these large snakes and even more ferocious humanoids.

The above images were created in tetracube

And lastly who can forget the classic Zombie. The bread and butter of many a dungeon or undead encounter. Sprinkle these amongst the other varied undead and you could have a flavour-filled adventure waiting the party.

Another week down and, weirdly, we only have two handfuls remaining until we roll into Dice-ember. So don’t forget to come back this weekend for more D&D content and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Crusty Critters and Snowy Shifters

Welcome to another end of week Friday Fight-night where tonight we look at Crusty Critters and Snowy Shifters. Tonight will reveal the two encounters I have in store for both the Boat trip and the sled ride, but not the main event – that can come in the Zine. But before I reveal a bit too much let’s sit back grab a relaxing brew and ease into the weekend.

Crusty Critters and Snowy Shifters

The dire saltwater crocodile is a large, thick scaled creature that preys on fish, shark and even some small whales. Not afraid of boats or ships the creature will occasionally use its claws to dig in and climb onboard sea vessels. Strong and hardy these creatures are an imposing adversary on dry land but a nightmare if you find yourself in the water with them.

The Deity of pure Snow

Revered amongst the Platara people the Giant Lynx is the rarest of the ice fields deities. These majestic celestials only take an interest in the events that happen on the material plane when something of great significance is occurring. These creatures however are as playful and fickle as magic itself and are often through to be the manifestation of a whim from gods of magic.

This thought is given more credit by the magical effects that these creatures can summon at will which appear and function like spells.

Oskarg & Platara

This weeks adventure finds the party coming face to face with Oskarg & Platara, the two demi-gods of Platara, or so the people of the ice plains call them. These two figureheads rule over the frozen lands like king and queen, but they hide a dark secret. But before I reveal their back story this weekend let’s sit back and meet the numbers behind the names.

Oskarg & Platara

337FrOsPl

The giant known as Oskarg is a deity to the people who live on the ice fields of Platara. Some think him immortal, a demi-god but only he and one other knows the truth. Oskarg sided with an ancient evil in a battle with heroes from a lost age, and he was defeated. In his rage and his refusal to accept defeat the great mage Andrasa cursed him to reside within the frozen lands and to guard an unholy site until he was relieved of his duty, or until he defeated the evil master that he once served. This time is still yet to come.

Oskarg – Created in tetra-cube.

Platara

The Winter wolf known as Platara is a marvel of the ice fields. There is always one Platara, no more and no less. Those who have claimed to have slain the wolf are visited by the creature on the next morning and walk away from the encounter changed.

Thought to be blessed by the land itself Platara guards the people from evil and from danger in exchange for the winter wolves of the ice plains being considered sacred animals. If even as little as one winter wolf is slain Platara will hunt down and challenge the murders to prove their worth in battle.

Thanks for dropping by tonight and getting a glimpse at Oskarg and Platara, this weeks combatants. However as I have mentioned a few times this week there is a choice to be made by the players. Confront the giant and wolf or not. I do have something up my sleeve for the alternative to fighting this formidable duo so you better come back again this weekend for more Tabletop Content. And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage
The Brazen Wolfe

Frozen Predators

The Platara Glacier is home to some hardy fauna, and flora for that matter but a recent incursion of creatures, the Frost Walker, poses a new threat. This week the Party meet the Frost Walker as it prepares to feast on the stolen tribespeople. So let’s sit back and meet this undead menace!

Frozen Predators

336FrFrPr

The Frost walker is a new to the list of frozen predators that stalk the Platara Plains and glacier. These undead resemble gaunt undead with descending jaws. Much like Ghouls and ghasts but these creatures seem to permeate a frost that seeps through armour. Many of their kind have two long arms that end in vicious hooked claws and a secondary set of arms that are for gripping prey as they climb the icy cliffs.

Strong, fast and durable these creatures are excellent stalkers and silent. They grab prey and will drag them to their dens where they can let terror ‘soften the meat’.

Thanks for visiting tonight and sticking with the adventure this week. This weekend will finally be a quiet one at home so let’s see if I can push through a few Zines this weekend. So don’t forget to come back this weekend for more Tabletop Content and lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage
The Brazen Wolfe

Glacial Terror

The Platara Glacier and the frozen plains that surround it are all hunting grounds for the glacial terror. This creature is so brutal and deadly that people only see the aftermath of its attacks, but never the attack itself. The main calling card, a tunnel through the ice and stone. So let’s reveal the big, bad bug for this week and sit back as tonight we investigate what it could be!

Glacial Terror

335FrGlTe

The creature is none other than the Remorhaz. Now this thing is renown for being a TPKer (Total Party Killer) but it will be moving slower on vertical surfaces doesn’t have ranged attacks and can only attack one creature at once. If fought and engaged carefully these creatures can be ridiculously rewarding encounters that your players will remember for years.

However, players that blindly jump into this encounter may and likely will regret it. So I would put a break in the adventure – such as snack or lunch – as this creature is revealed to give them some time to discuss what it is and maybe even look it up (I am not an evil DM, just a brutal one).

Come back this weekend for some more content as I write up some adventures and enjoy fathers day with the two kids. And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage
