The Whistling Rocks

Tonight I bring to you an improved, new format One-shot adventure, The Whistling Rocks. This adventure has been covered before, some time ago now, but it still a favourite of mine when it comes to quick, easy One-shots that can fill a travelling gap for your party. If you want to have a look at the older format check out Whistling rocks in the Town of Starfall (quite a mouthful of a title).

This adventure can be used system agnostic but focuses on D&D so please feel free to adjust to what ever system and the creatures you are using in your adventure! However as always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for the creatures found in this adventure.

So I hope you enjoy this Dice-embers adventure: The Whistling Rocks. There week is different where all the content is within the Zine and nearly none of it was revealed in the prior week! So if you want to run this adventure you will need to download the pdf!

Starfall Farms – created in Nightcafe.

The Town of Starfall was a small farming town that was slowly growing to be something of a supply line hub between the southern and northern part of a growing empire. Conflict in the north had demanded more food to be produced and the town of Starfall was optimally placed to get the freshest food to the front lines.

A great agricultural surge had seen the creation of a dozen more farms and the clearing of hundreds of trees from the Deepwood forest.

However their expansion was frowned upon and something had gone amiss.  A request for arms had been given to a travelling merchant who had connections a town or two over. That was 2 days ago and they were expecting the supplies any day now.

Mid-morning the following day a cart, the same one of the merchants they had requested aid from, came into town with not weapons but adventurers, our Party. Will they uncover the cause of the trouble? Smooth over tensions with a local Elven population or tip the balance of power to a shift of outright conflict with the tree loving people.

Thanks for visiting for a surprise Zine night! Don’t forget to come back for more content over the next few days, perhaps a few more surprise Zines’ or adventure posts. Looking back at the old way I used to structure my adventures, and the lower quality control I had back then, I like to think I have improved in what I produce now. But do let me know if you have any feedback as that is how we all grow and level up in our own ways.

And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Rimeglenn was a city that had been built at the edge of civilisation and typical to most frontier cities it had a rocky history with the neighbours. But with the establishment of the Rimeguard an era of safety and comfort had spread through the city.
However even the warrior-guard that called the city home could not protect it during the colder months. When the cold winds blew down from the forest; home to the ancient elven tribes, the season of mischief began and the guard, its people and all that called the walled city home had to endure weeks of theft, pranks and practical jokes.

A large bounty had been placed on the culprits responsible for the chaos that the season brought and every year, for the past seven years the bounty had increased to a sum that would fund a small kingdom for, well at least a few months.

But the trouble that plagued the city was not well known as the city benefited from trade and visitors to the city. If they knew about the troubles that happened during the depths of winter then it could put the cities livelihood at risk.

Lair of the Pit lord – Created in Nightcafe.

The party have just found the source of the raids on the Underdark settlements and cities and have found their way through the silken path to a large cavern.

A large central formation in the cavern looks to be made from calcified spun web that houses hundreds of innocent underdark residents who have been captured. But did the party get captured themselves? Will they free the captives or end their suffering and what happens when the ruler of this domain notices that her offerings have been taken? Those are the questions that we ask this adventure!

Thanks for joining me today for another Zine. This one had more content added to the Zine but like a few of my other ones I kept that in the Zine, not the blog. So you will just have to trust me on that and grab a copy of the Zine to check it out.

Next time you get a party together consider running this adventure and I hope that you enjoy it.
I hope you don’t miss a thing so come back daily in the coming week. This is so you can experience the creation of the next adventure as it evolves and shapes out. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Pit – Created in Nightcafe.

After Kalehgrul was attacked by the creatures of the underdark many of the misfortunate were taken from the city and carried away.

A few brave souls gave chase to try and rescue loved ones but the calcified web bridges that led into the deep tunnels below Kalehgrul held more than just webs and the discarded.

But they also have some cargo to escort, one of the attackers from the raid was the daughter of a Oโ€™lorun family – a rival drow house.

But the city itself is a neighbour of Duraegis and itโ€™s apparent that there is danger coming their way as the refugees start pouring into the city.

The Scarred Alchemist

Tonight and I have created a zine for an adventure that I used to coach a few new DMs to this glorious role, The Scarred Alchemist. This adventure is a stepping stone into adventures with skill checks, plot twists and Memorable NPCs with a very small range or Rules to use.

The Scarred Alchemist can be used system agnostic but focuses on D&D so please feel free to adjust to what ever system and the creatures you are using in your adventure! However as always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for the creatures found in this adventure.

Night Market at Curvale – created in nightcafe.

The party keen to find work have arrived at Curvale. The bustling town is ripe for the work that their band of adventuring can bring and if rumours are true there is a lot of work here for them.

The streets are filled with people calling for their attention, hawking their wares and services at anyone who looks like they have the coin. The party gains a lot of attention from every merchant they pass offering anything from food to weapons to jewellery.

However they also notice a few rougher looking people lurking in alleyways or being told to move on from the city guard, most of the time.

The streets are otherwise typical of a city of this size. Many people move around, buying clothes, begging for coins or otherwise trying to make a living.

The party then sees it, the guild hall. A place where adventurers meet to talk about rumours, jobs and to share an ale after a long adventure or quest. The large stone building has a noticeboard out front with notices about wanted people, odd jobs or requests for information about rumours.

Inside the hall a few adventures sit at tables talking quietly amongst themselves and a woman sits at a centre desk tidying up some papers.

Salve of Youth – created in Nightcafe.

The party leaves Tom to his busy work and look towards the rest of the market. There is a large gathering around a relatively ram-shackle looking market stall where people crowd around the small wooden stand.

A man is quickly talking and handing over small glass jars as quickly as gold pieces are handed over to him. The party notices Reginald walking back clutching an open jar and rubbing a pale pink cream on his face. **Perception check DC 14 would reveal that the scar that he had on his jaw line has completely vanished.** moving towards the stall they see a young man with a bandaged left arm talking quickly to a few people who evidently missed out. Smiling, they bid him a farewell before the man starts to pack up his stall.

The man is not remarkable in any other way except unlike the other merchants who are doing a roaring trade he has a city guard standing near him and watching over his back instead of a mercenary or personal guard. โ€œWell Theo, I am never quite ready for what happens when you open Shop. Do you need any help getting back home safely?โ€ the guard said as he smiled and walked up to the young man.

โ€œNo thanks John, I donโ€™t plan on taking this gold out of the merchant district. I have a few people I am still indebted to who helped me after the accident and I have some more goods to organise delivery of for the next batch. It never quite ends I am afraid!โ€ he said with a nervous laugh.

Mushroom Cavern – created in nightcafe.

Disorientated and tired from the fight with the vampire in the Carrion Swamp at the well of souls the party find themselves whisked away as the magical backlash of the Well of Souls collapse attempts to link itself with one of the other places of power that form the tri-seal.

However as the well of souls was failing the magic wasnโ€™t quite accurate and the teleportation led them in the right direction, but not far enough.

Well of souls – created in nightcafe

Battling undead and repairing barricades may not be the favourite way for the party to get to know the people of a new town, but it was how the people of Ferklend got to know them, and began to respect them.ย

However during the night after the fighting and repairing was done Viktira left and disappeared into the swamps seeking out the ruins. Whatโ€™s worse is that Rike, the only one who has been to the ruins, allegedly, believes that she may be in danger, and a danger to everyone as the well of souls may react to her bloodline.

After the encounter with the undead at the gates of Ferklend the party recovered and helped with some of the repairs. The party managed to secure another night where they were staying and the people of Ferklend were more accommodating after they helped defend the town.

However in the morning the party woke to find Rike frantically looking around the town. Upon spying the party he rushed to them.

โ€œThank the gods I found you! Itโ€™s Viktira, we were talking about her family last night and I think she may be descended from the tribe of people that once called the jungles home. She was super curious about the ruins so I told her where to find them. I didnโ€™t think of it more than someone being interested in the history of the swamp I swear. But when I went to warn her about the ruins this morning she was gone. One of the guards said he saw her leave the town by the main gate and then head towards the ruins.

If she is the descendent of the original custodians of the well of souls the inscriptions at the ruins say that she may make the ruins more unstable. Youโ€™ve got to stop her.โ€

Tulkore Jungle – created in Nightcafe.

The drive to move onwards towards investigating the points of power that the Mage Andrasa had studied continued. Despite the gained knowledge from the Ice Spire there was a compulsion to move forward.

Not all was right at the Platara Ridge and from what they had heard of The Fulkore Jungle, and the Carrion Swamp, there was something foul brewing there too.

The jungles have always had undead in them, hence the name given to the swamp. But they were increasing in number now and fewer and fewer people came back from the jungle and more and more undead found their way to the city’s walls.

Is it tied to this Well of Souls or is there something else darker going on?

Ravencreek – created in nightcafe.

The party arrived at Ravencreek on a chilled morning. There is a light fog that seems to have settled around the little town that is famous for its week-long celebration which attracts people from all across the land.

This means that for people who fancy themselves sellswords, thieves, do-gooders and even bandits the town is of a particular focus during these seven days of festivity.

However what they find is not the excitement and party that they expected, itโ€™s a headless girl, a mourning town and a funeral – the first of many to come this bloody week.

Can the party find out who or what is killing the townsfolk and why?
