Searching for the right Shape

Tonight and I have created a new zine for the year. I hope you are finding the current format of this Zine useful as I am continue to investigate what I can create weekly. I do this while aiming to give the DM freedom and flexibility without railroading them and the Party. So without any further waiting I present, Searching for the right Shape, in the same format, as a fun one-shot to assist GMs when they need a night out of the books.

As always this adventure can be used system agnostic but focuses on D&D so please feel free to adjust to what ever system and the creatures you are using in your adventure! However as always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for the creatures found in this adventure.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, Searching for the right Shape, and that your rolls are made with advantage.

Corneth – Created in Nightcafe.

The party had been sitting down for a meal when they were approached by someone who obviously rarely attended these places. “Excuse me for the interruption but I am hoping you are the right people I am seeking out.” he mumbled looking worried before asking them to confirm if they were indeed the people who had completed a quest that they had in the past.

After the confirmation, assuming it is given, the man looks incredibly relieved. “Praise Tyr. If you can, will you come with me? I have been sent to find you and only you will do. My employer needs people with your reputation and discreteness.” he bumbled. “We can reward you very handsomely indeed. I will return for you on the morrow if you are willing to help. Please think on it as my employer’s generosity knows now bounds.”

Manaeva’s Backlash – Created in Nightcafe.

The party rarely stayed unnoticed for long but this isn’t uncommon when adventurers of such renown enter a city. But the party where probably not expecting the level of attention that their arrival would result in.

Several guards, merchants and even some members of various guilds approached them asking them if the rumours and stories were true about them. Several asked for the party to help them out with odd-jobs from around the town but they all didn’t want to pay any gold. After the party suggested that they be paid for the jobs the requests dried up – several people expressing that “so much for the rumour about them helping any in need and wanting nothing in return – just typical greedy adventurers”

However as they were mulling over a meal at the local Tavern they were approached by what they could only describe as an apostate.

“I have need of brave adventurers who are willing to do what is needed. I can pay very well but I am unable to tell you what the job is here.”

Krencham – Created in Nightcafe.

As the world around them went silent the party became aware of a presence near the road. They had not gotten as far as they wanted to before the creature had apparently caught up to them.

As the wind caught hold of the crops that had gone wild in the forgotten fields the party caught the occasional chirping-purr sound. Occasionally a flash of blue, red or green would appear between the browning stalks of the crops before it would disappear nearly faster than it was seen.

Swans Reprieve – Created in Nightcafe.

As the party climbed the steep cliff the expertise of Jayke and Daruden became evident. Climbing rapidly and jumping to ledges that would require either great athleticism or training they fastened the pitons to ensure that they had a waypoint in case they fell, but more importantly the party could ascend with them.

Despite some of the earlier doubts in the duo the pitons held securely and none of them failed on the ascent. Jayke and Daruden even assisted the party several times to ensure that they ascended safely to the top.

However as they neared the ledge a sound reaches them that caused each of them to hug the stoney face.

The guttural voices of ogres could be heard from the ledge above them and the snapping of bones could be heard from the crackle and pop from a fire that cast a red glow upon the edge where they needed to reach in order to head towards the castle, or where Jayke and Daruden were taking them to at least.

Verone’s Black Tower – Created in Nightcafe.

The lure of gold is tough for nearly anyone to overcome as with great gold comes great power. The ability to fund your own operation, to buy medicine for the homeless, to build homes, fortifications, magical artefacts and more all stems from great wealth. But when there is too much gold offered then the question shifts from “How much are you willing to pay for” to “why so much, what’s the catch?”

The party had just entered Verone when an official of the city, a noble and secretary to the lord, approached them. “I am so grateful that you came in such short notice. We were really worried you wouldn’t show up in time and were beginning to wonder what we were to do with the chest of gold being out of the treasury for so long.” Without giving the party time to talk he signalled them to follow where several guards were standing around a wagon that was laden with a large chest. As he neared the wagon he called backwards “I hope the sum of ten thousand gold pieces was enough. I daresay we had to scrape the vault dry to get this much.” he said as he slapped the chest, the guards looking nervously around.

“But as our messenger explained, we are in desperate need of heroes to accompany Verone’s hope, our own Hero, to complete the trail of the black tower. Simple enough for people of your skill as all you have to do is make sure the hero gets to the top and completes the ritual.” he said with a hint of nerves, “It’s a bit different this time around with the hero,” he paused, “never mind me – a lot of nerves is all. We need it to go well so we can ensure the future safety of the city, that’s all. So the hero will meet you by the gates, you are free to take the gold with you now or later – but I would encourage you to leave it here as it is a lot of gold to travel to the black tower.”

Arkensol Arena above ground – Created in Nightcafe.

Arkensol had been, for many years now, the centre for games and entertainment for the adventurers and those who love excitement and the combat that takes place in the arena.

Arkansas was always a place of trade rather than one of excitement and extreme games but the last decade saw a rise in business in the city when they started having wild, dangerous animals fight in the arena. The pinnacle of this being when they started to give criminals the choice, fight in the arena or serve out your sentence.

Nearly none of them made it past the first few minutes. But the organisers of the games made it interesting enough that they never had a short supply of creatures to fight or criminals fighting for their freedom.

The party had come to Arkensol to relax and perhaps spend some money as this latest game that the city had promised was meant to be the biggest one yet.

The original arena had been built quite small and level with the rest of the city but as the games grew they had dug out a sunken arena with light filtered down through skylights that lit up the arena and the stadium. A true masterpiece of engineering and magic combined.

With just a few gold pieces they were able to secure a seat and an ale as they waited for what was promised to be a fight to remember.

Oscowl City – Created in Nightcafe.

Walking the streets of Oscowl the party keeps an eye out for people they know, suspicious characters or people that they recognise from the night that Ikob was killed.

After an hour or two they find themselves looking down a busy street of merchants with their wares on tables, mats or stalls. Barrels of produce lined the walkway and the merchants called to not just the party but everyone, proclaiming their goods superior quality as they tried to make more sales.

Luistira City – Created in Nightcafe.

The party had been drawn to Luistira – the city of steel to replenish their arms and armour after a few intensive battles. The steel here at the beginning of the Ferrous highway was famous. Many of the best smiths worked here and several notable blades had been created in the several forges that were established here.

However it was not the shopping that kept the party here but a request for aid.

The Iron Harvest was calling for people to escort its many wagons to the Kings Castle, a few days from Luistira, and they were asking for only the best.
Either those with great repute would be hired or those who could test themselves and prove themselves worthy and it just so happened that the party was also heading in that direction.
“What makes you think you are ready to join the Iron Harvest Guard?” the guard, dressed more like a royal guard than a caravan mercenary, asked.
“We have heard word of your party. Some good work but surely these tales of your exploits and endeavours have been exaggerated.” a second spoke, this time a female who was dressed as the part of a caravaner.
“Now Sal, we can’t jump to conclusions.” the man spoke looking across his broad shoulder to where she sat in the back room at the inn.
“Easy captain. Let them speak. They have a reputation for getting the job done.” Sal continued leaning towards the party.

The Ironwood Druids Meet – Made in nightcafe.

“The Ironwood forest is an ancient place ruled by a conclave of druids who have protected the lands for generations. The woods themselves have trees that grow into the sky and boast the strongest wood that you can find in the content. That’s the main reason why the Druid conclave protects these woods.

They need to protect these lands from the people in the neighbouring kingdoms from harvesting the trees for their own use.”

The travelling bard that the party had met up with had not stopped talking since they met along the road heading towards Crakenburg to assist in carting grain out as part of a job from a few wealthy merchants. Despite the party liking company the bard had personally alerted bandits to their position, a pack of wolves had followed his noise and no game dared to stay nearby as they travelled through the woods.

But the party stopped him talking as up ahead the forest was silent and they could see a few humans standing perfectly still as if they were in trouble.

After the conflict with the woods themselves the party find themselves following Kevin in the direction of the druids enclave. The druids are the only ones who could deal with that many locusts and protect the job that the party were here for – escorting the caravan and its harvest of grain and straw back to the merchants.

It’s not long until the party is walking towards a giant Ironwood tree. Where its roots and trunk meet has formed a hollow under its massive form and stairs have been shaped out of the earth leading upwards to the space in the tree. Stone carvings of animals line the pathway and the sense of them watching the party as they move upwards follow them even until they are stepping into the hollow.

The area within is sparse with a single man kneeling at a short wooden table as he works a mortar and pestle.
