Beyond the veil

Catching up from yesterday where I had the opportunity to continue on with the D&D campaign, today I bring to you a glimpse beyond the veil. Now this is the 3rd major adventure that looks into the creature beyond the veil and with what’s been going on with the places of power that Andrasa had mentioned… I think its fair to say that we may be in a bit of a predicament at the moment. So let’s get our second last glimpse that what this is and get back to the adventure!

Beyond the veil

345TuBeTVe

The creature marvelled at its minions ability to siphon souls to it through the binding that the witch Andrasa had placed upon it. The energy that was coming through was enough to sate its appetite and help regain its strength. Being tracked in a pocket dimension wasn’t such a big deal for a being of kind. But the binding, the three separate places of power that were guarded by champion, civilization and location had bound its power.

But with the fall of the giant, the betrayer, the gradual destruction of the well of souls (aided by a vampire that was foolish enough to believe it could control the necromantic energies) and now, its servant siphoning energies through the deep dark… The time of the creature’s emergence was nearly here. However, these adventurers have proven difficult to manipulate and they keep showing up. The first instance they helped with the frozen seal, in a way. At the jungle they nearly stopped its plan, but it was too far gone. But here they may actually stop it.

It was not powerful enough to push through and be in a state to fight. No he needed more time and more souls. His servant had better kill these adventurers before it was too late, or they could ruin everything.

The creature in the darkness stirred as thoughts, projections from beyond the veil came to her. As she hung from the webs and ceiling she looked over the cocoons that she had provided to the deep dark as an offering. Satisfied that her servants had captured the intruders and had dealt with them she had left them alone for some time now.

But the voice, her master, came crashing like a cacophony of sound through her mind as the urgency in killing them turned from a suggestion to a demand. It was useless arguing with her master, it was too powerful and despite her own strength she learnt a millennia ago that to go against the one that watches was something not done, or possible.

Moving slowly through the cavern she measured the souls she had provided, a talent she had and she lamented. The interlopers were strong enough to count for several souls and their death would not feet through to the deep dark and onto where her master was. She would need to raid another town to get enough energy to sate her master’s demands and needs. Whatever… The hunt and the planning was exciting to her and watching her brood do her bidding was fine. Her master would have to wait longer but that was something she was fine with.

Besides, she needed to get more servants after these adventurers had killed so many.

Thanks for stopping by to catch up on our normal Tuesday blog update. Tonight I will update it with our regular scheduled content so make sure to come back for that. We are getting closer to the final confrontation and I have to make a decision on where it will take place. The realm beyond, or the deep dark. So stick around and come back daily to make sure you follow along. And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Lord of the Pit

Bit of a different one tonight, as I tried to find or create (using AI etc.) something to represent the Lord of the Pit. In the end I had a bit of fun modifying an image in Photoshop to get something that felt just right (as I couldn’t find anything specific that met the brief). So enjoy the writeup and let me know what you think of the image below!

Lord of the Pit

344TuLoOTPi

Lord of the Pit – Created in photoshop using source image stock as source material and inspiration. Blending and painting over the images using airbrush, clone and smudge tools.

The warmth that the prisoners generated set the cavern below her like a thousand fires. Their energy, the life force that they were generating was what her master needed and why she drove the driders and other abominations onwards to get more captives for the pit.

But as she looked downwards several bright spots of light were coming from one of the tunnels that led from the pit. Her mouth salivated with the power these creatures had but she hesitated. Even with the raids on Duraegis up above the pit she hadn’t seen anyone with this vitality. Nothing had even come close to these creatures that had wandered into her nest. This made her both excited and anxious at what this means. Had these creatures foolishly wandered this close to the Deep Dark or had they come here deliberately and if so, why?

Nothing had escaped the silken prison and the energy that was syphoned into the Pit itself, well that had attracted all manners of foul creatures that her pets had taken care of. But some of the last hunters that had gone out had not returned and some of those who had returned were gravely injured. In fact taking a quick count of those driders that remained she was shocked to realise how many were left. Unfortunately the bindings she had placed on the minds of these creatures, some with greater difficulty, meant that they were unable to inform her of what had happened. But she had more pressing matters to deal with normally.

Maybe these creatures were powerful for a reason and maybe they had sought this place out instead of just stumbling towards it. With the potential threats and opportunities arising in her mind she began to plan, and while she waited high in the ceiling above the cavern of silk the hung motionless.

The inky-black pit, the deep dark, continued to feast as the prisoners were drained of their life force one by one. The driders and Ettercaps feasted on the bodies of the newly dead and tossed what remained deeper into the cavern, for the young to feast so that they could continue their plan, her benefactors’ plan that was.

Thanks for dropping by tonight and for continuing to follow along with the blog. Don’t forget that we still have a few days left of this week as we continue along with this adventure. Tomorrow we will cover the plot hook, a twist (sort of…) so make sure to not forget to come back for that and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Families of Ravencreek

Now tonight I think I have realised how much I have bitten off with this this weeks project when I started to construct two of the families of Ravencreek. The Elarnao line and the Bucklewheat lineages can trace their family roots back to the first people to call Ravencreek home which, unfortunately, resulted in One of their demise at the hands of our horseman. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s meet some of the family.

The Families of Ravencreek

342TuSwFo

The Elarnao Family

Arlorn Ponte – Created in Artbreeder

Descendent from the original elven family Arlorn is a hunter who spends most of his time in the woods. Trained in his ancestral ways of hunting and gathering he honours each animal that he kills and only takes what is needed for the family and villagers who need it.

Mae Elarnao – Created in Artbreeder

Mae works in one of the stores in Ravencreek with her brother Jake. They primarily sell supplies to travellers but also assist in their parents inn, the Lonely Pine when times are busy.

Jake Elarnao – Created in Artbreeder

Jake handles the delivery from the family store and is a strong and fast lad despite his appearance.

Quick to help and assist some may say he trusts to easily and talks to freely but he fails to see the bad in people which has gotten him into trouble on the odd occasion

The Descendants from the Elarnao family all have a strong elven bloodline. They age very slowly and are normally closely tied to the land and the animals of this place. They pass down the stories of their ancestors and the trials that they went through when Dokalvar attempted to tear what they had put together with the humans. They practise the traditions of old and some are still trained as warriors.

The Bucklewheat Family

Kindred Bucklewheat – Created in Artbreeder

Mother at a young age of 18, Kindred continued to work on the farm and has a way with animals. Now being in her late 40s her daughter rose quickly to become the town’s mayor and was celebrated for her bond to the new ways of working and her ties to tradition.

The death of her daughter weighs heavily on her and she is wracked with grief and anger and the recent events.

Elenore Bucklewheat – Created in Artbreeder

Elenore was the youngest mayor to be elected in Ravencreek. She had the strongest connection to the land and animals in a human that any in the town had seen and her dedication to the traditions of old and her plans to support the town quickly drew the favour of not just the elders and all those who met her.

However she is the first, and currently, only victim of the horseman that attacked during the first night of the week of celebration and her death shocked the community.

Thomson Bucklewheat – Created in Artbreeder

Tom is the brother of Kindred and thus uncle to Elenore. Despite his sadness and grief over the loss of his niece he continues to try and seek answers despite his age (if half-elves can really call themselves getting old in their 50s).

A farmer and one who has a strong connection to the land Tom is not an unpleasant person to work with but he generally has few words for strangers.

The Bucklewheat family are farmers and tend to the land and the animals. They have a strong bond to most of the village as their family has always provided food to the community since the founding of Ravencreek. Although they are slowly dwindling in numbers their bloodline had hope with Elenore recently becoming engaged but her untimely death stopped those wishes. It’s up to her ageing uncle and her more elven great uncle now to continue on the ancient line of farmers in Ravencreek

A big night of updates for a big week ahead. It’s been a while since I have had soo many NPCs in one post and I think its a testament to what is going on in the background. Don’t forget to come back each day this week as we continue to expand this adventure and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,
The Brazen Wolfe

Morali O’Lorun

As we look at what this week brings us we start with the prisoner, Morali O’Lorun. The young priestess of Lloth has considerable influence and to kill someone blessed by Lloth could displease the goddess… or please her, she is a complicated being. To get a glimpse into this priestess and help set the scene and mood for the next few days let’s sit down, grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s update!

Morali O’Lorun

Morali O’Lorun

Morali O’Lorun – Created in Artbreeder

The O’Lorun family has been rising in power for only a short amount of time, in Drow years that is. Originally a lesser family they rose to power when one of their daughters was chosen to be blessed by Lloth and the now-matriarch used her power and influence to raise her daughters up. Morali O’Lorun is a prodigy being blessed by Lloth as well as being a cunning business woman.

However despite her own strengths her mother is ruthless in business and Morali could never hold a candle to the flame of her mothers ambition. Her connection to Lolth and own ambition has led her down the path of futile turf wars with the Melarn family. Now her mission failed she has a difficult choice to make. Try to complete her mothers orders or make a play to take control of the family decades earlier than she had imagined. If she can only stay alive for the next few days in the custody of the drow she tried to kill..

That ends tonight’s short update. Most of the Drow portraits may start ending up looking the same as the ‘stock’ is, limited in Artbreeder. However with enough tweaking anything is possible! Tomorrow the true adventure for the week begins so don’t forget to come back as we expand upon this weeks adventure. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Merchants of Kalehgrul

This week we meet the merchants of Kalehgrul, a little settlement village who specialise in spider silk. More merchant than farmer the Melarn family have provided fine spider silk for generations to the point that they have quite the bond with the arachnids. But more on that in a little bit. So let’s sit down, grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s update!

The Merchants of Kalehgrul

341TuSwFo

As the party got used to their surroundings they found some materials and soon those that couldn’t see in the dark could view their surroundings. Dozens of giant spiders moved across the cavern they were in and created vast net-like webs that were big enough to catch the giant bats the flew through the skies. Above them mushrooms and long plant-like tendrils shed a soft glow that confirmed they were far from a source of light.

The spiders moved calmly even when the party drew near and merle scurried out of the way instead of viewing the party as a snack. Content to feast upon the bats that they caught in their webs. As they moved around a squeak could be heard in short rhythmic patterns coming from a passage up ahead. As they approached the passage they were greeted by a Rothe, a large bull like creature, that was pulling a wagon with three drow onboard.

After a few moments of speaking quickly in drow and brandishing crossbows the male urged his two female companions to lower and he spoke in common. “Easy, we don’t want no trouble. I am Izzrysn and these are my daughters and we are merchants. I must ask though, what are you doing in this cavern?”

Izzrysn Melarn

Izzrysn Melarn – Created in Artbreeder

The drow named Izzrysn runs the merchant business for his family. Well versed in many languages he sees business opportunities instead of threats when something changes in his sphere. However despite his obvious business knowledge and intelligence he often finds himself being overruled by the female of his family – like most drow males.

Umnel Melarn

Umnel Melarn – Created in Artbreeder

Umnel is the younger sister of Qistra and tends to the spiders of the Melarn family. Whilst not blessed to be chosen by Lloth she is still able to understand and handle these creatures with ease. This helps the family collect their silk for their business but has one a few occasions protected the family when her abilities can come into use.

Qistra Melarn

Qistra Melarn – Created in Artbreeder

When business is poor Qistra, the oldest daughter of the head of the Melarn family, gets involved. She is rash and impulsive but will still listen to her mother, sister and father. She oversees production of the spider silk and inspects it for quality. Whilst her father has a business understanding and her sister can tend to the cluster of spiders she has a fine eye for quality when it comes to silk.

Whilst the party try and understand why they are here and what brought them to the underdark having some, somewhat understanding, people to help them make sense of what happened will help make plans to remedy the situation. However despite this they are still an unknown distance from home, without many supplies and in an unfamiliar land. So don’t forget to come back each day this week as we continue to expand upon this adventure and lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Voice that Echoes

Now after this week you may find a pattern in how I structure these remaining, 9 weeks and the pattern continues with the voice that echoes. This weeks NPC update touches on one of my favourite techniques which is giving a voice or a view of the situation and scenario to the bad-guy (or thing). So let’s not wait for them to come to us. So sit down with a coffee and roll into tonight’s update!

The Voice that Echoes

340TuTVoTEc

The same creatures from the frozen lands appeared at the edge of the creatures growing conscious as they regained their power. The swamp had slowly eroded the physical barriers to the well of souls and as the waters and roots from the trees were exposed to the powerful energies from the well they were corrupted.

The undead were growing in number and those that the creature was able to influence were drawn to the well to expedite the task that time had started. But a new plan was forming in the cunning creature’s mind. Something that would bring its century of planning ever closer to becoming a reality.

Breathing deeply, if it could do such a thing, the creature marvelled at how much simpler it could be if the minions that it had could complete the task. But the mechanisms of fate were turning and the adventures, and the influential girl were so close and temptation was taking over. All it would take was a nudge.

Reaching its consciousness out it grabbed the attention of all the undead near the ruins. Fish, reptiles, beasts, humans and all other dead creatures responded to the mental nudge and as one they followed the direction. A great upheaval of dead flesh or mouldy bones moved across the swamp and towards the central thrumming of the well.

Now the creature prepared the final nudge. Reaching out to the humans it attempted a single compulsion. To eradicate the undead and its source.

Vikira muffled a shriek as not ten feet from the party a pile of bones moved. Slowly the skeleton pulled itself from the grasses, mud and rocks and with a sickening shuffle it shambled towards the ruins. Pointing Vikira looked across the swamp as dozens upon dozens of undead rose and shuffled towards the ruins.

“I think we found the source…” she whispered to the party as a strong thrum shook the loamy soil again. “There is no way that the town, Ferklend, would survive if all these undead attacked at once. And once they are done there they will seek out other towns and settlements nearby. We need to put an end to this.” she said as he face paled at the sheer volume of undead

She was right, of course, and the energy that they were feeling was surely one thing. The Well of souls. Andrasa’s next point of interest. A place of great power and potential wealth. But this place felt wrong as if the power was corrupted. They felt the need to finish what Andrasa’ had surely started and attempt to stop the chaotic undead energies that were flowing from the well. Only then will the people of this land be safe.

The final pieces are coming together. Join me for the other days of the week to see what else is revealed as the party find the well of souls and, unknowingly, act as puppets in a grand scheme. Maybe, we’ll see. As with all D&D adventures parties tend to have their own agenda, but we will have a plan for that. Don’t forget to dial back in this week for more content and lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Swamp Folk

This week we meet some Swamp Folk, the people who live in Ferklend and who, well, they are a bit tired of living next to unending undead hordes. So this week is about meeting some of the folk, learning their legends and pain-points and perhaps something a bit more. So let’s not keep these poor desperate folk waiting and sit down with a coffee and roll into tonight’s update!

Rike Stogeze

Rike Stogeze – Created in Artbreeder

The tracker named Rike has spent all his youth and much of his adulthood trekking through the Carrion swamp and the lands around Ferklend. He has been a voice to the people voicing the concern on the rising number of undead and foretelling a devastating event that will lead to its destruction. But spouting these types of messages will generally get one ostracised from the community and seen as a bit crazy. But with the coming of the party and… other recent events people are starting to listen to Rike and they should really start to believe him as the dead don’t wait for the living.

Viktira Bronlock

Vikira Bronlock – Created in Nightcafe

After travelling with the party for over a week Vikira approaches the party and asks them for a favour. She is a noble who’s family lost all their gold in funding an expedition to explore the ruins in the Carrion Swamp. The expedition party came back with nothing but excuses and fewer men than they left with. Aiming to prove her parents theories about the ruins she needs someone to guide her through the swamp, or, she will go alone like she has to this point.

However despite her parents not having any money actually left, she doesn’t reveal this and merely explains her lineage and that those that will help her will be handsomely rewarded.

Another NPC night and a new face, and an old one too. This week sees the party travel into the swamps and beyond in search of the well of souls. But will their goals, the people of Ferklend and Vikira be aligned? Probably. But you will have to not forget come back daily to find out. And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

In the Business of Travel

The mode of transportation set, the next part of their adventure awaits as we meet two NPCs who are in the business of travel. A sailor who tames he seas and a land-based Merchant who battles he snow and ice. Who the party chooses to travel with doesn’t change the outcome but changes the experience, well mostly that is… So to meet these two NPCs let’s sit back with a coffee and roll into tonight’s update!

Bonjon Quiverwick

Bonjon Quiverwick – Created in Nightcafe

The ship known as Little Nymph was run by a rather rotund and wealthy merchant names Samuel Redeye. Sam however had trusted Bonjon, Jon to many, to run his ship up and down the coast between the Platara lands of ice and cold to the more humid shores of the Tulkore jungle and the endless swamp beyond.

Despite always being on the sea Jon hasn’t found wealth about the ship but has found a freedom that he craves. Being born into a life of servitude he and his parents served a lord far inland. As chance would have it Tymora smiled upon him and granted a release from his bond when he and his parents were given to a travelling merchant to settle a debt. This turned out for the best as the merchant quickly freed them and gave them employment.

Although not married, Jon has been in a long relationship with someone else in the trade. But despite being monogamous neither appear to want to settle down and continue their relationship in brief periods of respite from both their travels.

Carmine Cliffrunner

Carmine Cliffrunner – Created in Nightcafe

As brash and rough as the ice fields that Carmine travels along she is as merciless as the frigid lands she makes an income from. The owner of a series of sleds that transports goods along the land, far from the coast and the rumoured pirates there, Carmine is known for getting goods safely to where they need to get to.

Carmine ensures safety by utilising large Oxen like beasts that are twice as large, nearly impervious to the cold and about as ferocious as a blizzard. But despite their hostile nature Carmine’s own nature seems to have kept the beasts in line and surprising loyal and protective of her. However, despite her best efforts they tend to be a bit ornery with those who choose to travel with the goods that she generally transports.

Carmine doesn’t talk much about her family or relationships but she has been hard to find periodically as she takes time away from transporting goods and people through the cold ice fields every few months.

Viktira Bronlock

Vikira Bronlock – Created in Nightcafe

A young lady that appears to be excessively wealthy Viktira seems to be in a hurry to leave. Whether its to escape something or get somewhere she doesn’t explain. However, she is open to the party after questioning them and learning about their exploits and adventures and she wants to know all about their travels. If they travel together she is a source of near-endless questions and requests for more information on their adventures and tales.

Eyes in the ice

The party approach the Ice Spire unaware of eyes in the ice. As they march forwards the spire a group of eyes spy an easy meal and something ancient watches the humanoids wander towards the spire of ice. So to uncover a bit more about the lurkers let’s grab a coffee and roll into tonights update!

Eyes in the Ice

337TuEyITIc

Dozens of eyes watched from the frozen cliff above the glacier eager and sparkling with hunger. Saliva dripped from white lips and froze mid air to form jagged sharp pillars that mirrored the spire before them. As the people walked towards the frozen spike the other members of the pack moved forward and began to climb down. The hungry creatures are drawn to hunt around the spire of ice as they had for many generations. But this hunt was different to the others.

Normally they hunt the corrupted and the tainted that were drawn to the shard of ice that rose from the ground. This time they were hunting something different, something warm who’s flavours danced upon their tongue from the air that they inhaled. The leader looked across the pack of winter wolves and it was filled with a sense of duty and belonging. But they weren’t quite winter wolves; they too, like the spire were something more than what they seemed.

The winter wolves found purchase in the steep ice cliff, using their sharp durable claws to carve paw-holds into the ice, rock and snow. As they began to close in on the people they let out their mournful hunting howls. Their prey heard the calls to the hunt too late.

But a darker, more sinister presence began to creep forward on ethereal winds towards the same humanoids. The people were only just now realising they were the prey and were forming battle-ready lines. But despite the adrenaline they felt they also felt something cast its eye upon them, something deeper. From beyond the veil an ancient evil stirred and watched eagerly as the guardians faced off against would be aggressors to their cause. The other guardians in the spire awoke and began to prepare for their sacred duty. The evil had long awaited this moment when the naïve tribes people were not around or had forgotten their ancient oaths.

That mage, Andrasa had discovered the truth of the spire and had attempted to seal the secrets of the spire away so none would be tempted for its power or wealth. But her wisdom was long forgotten and those that had fought with the mage in the battle so long ago were no longer around. Soon the wait would be over but only if the puppets played their part.

The Icewalker Tribe

Tonight we meet the Icewalker Tribe who live on the Platara icefields before the great glacier. What appears to be just a meeting will quickly shift, but that may be something for tomorrow night. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s meet the tribe leader!

The Icewalker Tribe

336TuTIcTr

The Icewalker tribe was a collection of small animal-skin and fur huts that surrounded a large communal tent in the middle. As Hisha and Jardi approached, people rushed out to grab the different boxes, bags and sacks from them as they brought them into the tribe’s camp.

People milled about and spoke in a rushed language that included clicks, pops and a few words in common. Soon the party were walking amongst the hunts and word had spread of their arrival, and of their success on the Ridge.

“These outsiders killed the Remorhaz?” one man said as he stared at them in awe as several children begged them to tell stories of their adventures. Hisha greeted an older looking human man as he walked out to greet them all.

“Welcome to The Icewalker Tribes camp. We hear that you have kept our Icespeaker, Jardi, and our Matriarch, Hisha, safe. We thank you for helping strangers and welcome you as heroes. Please come out of the cold and rest your feet.” The man spoke with a warm fatherly tone. “I am Fenwick the elected tribe leader and I both welcome and bless you on behalf of the frost titan.”

Matriarch Hisha Sethcardi

Hisha Sethcardi – Created in Artbreeder

Hisha has never wanted to be more than one of the tribe but her being a Drow has granted her an extremely long life. Her elven nature also blessed her with the ability to not sleep as others and it has thwarted many attempted attacks and raids against her people, the icewalker tribe.

Her adopted daughter Jardi was declared Icespeaker, a sacred title amongst the people of the Platara ice plains and as such she was granted the title Matriarch. Despite never wanting to be a leader she is a natural born leader and people listen to her above everyone, everyone except Fenwick that is.

Tribe Leader Fenwick Helder

Fenwick Helder – Created in Artbreeder

Fenwick was not born from the tribe but was chosen by them. A hunter from a distant land he came to the Platara plains to hunt the beasts of the land, however he discovered something much more. A Giant winter wolf. Their battle was legendary and as the howls and blasts of ice met with adamantine spear the people of the tribes flocked towards the commotion as no one had stood up against the giant wolf.

The Giant Winter wolf was a minor deity of the plains, an ancient beast and to challenge it was to challenge the plains themselves. However Fenwick was strongly determined to survive. For a full night and day the beast and the hunter fought and eventually the beast disarmed the man. However instead of devouring the attacker the great beast imbued Fenwick with a blessing of the ice. Fenwick became a legend and was adopted into the Icewalker tribe as their leader, the favoured tribe of the great wolf.

Content with his place and of the wisdom imbued into him from the wolf, and the tribe, he acts as a conduit between the tribe and the ice itself. Shifting as quickly as an avalanche to avoid threats to the tribe and settling like snow in the good times.
