The Shadow of Oscowl

Tonight and I have created a new zine for the year. I hope you are finding the current format of this Zine useful as I am continue to investigate what I can create weekly. I do this while aiming to give the DM freedom and flexibility without railroading them and the Party. So without any further waiting I present, The Shadow of Oscowl, in the same format, as a fun one-shot to assist GMs when they need a night out of the books.

As always this adventure can be used system agnostic but focuses on D&D so please feel free to adjust to what ever system and the creatures you are using in your adventure! However as always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for the creatures found in this adventure.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, The Shadow of Oscowl, and that your rolls are made with advantage.

The Shadow of Oscowl

Oscowl City – Created in Nightcafe.

Walking the streets of Oscowl the party keeps an eye out for people they know, suspicious characters or people that they recognise from the night that Ikob was killed.

After an hour or two they find themselves looking down a busy street of merchants with their wares on tables, mats or stalls. Barrels of produce lined the walkway and the merchants called to not just the party but everyone, proclaiming their goods superior quality as they tried to make more sales.

Thanks for joining me today for another Zine this year. As usual there is a lot more in the Zine than there was in the daily updates on this blog – so make sure to grab a copy of the PDF.

Next time you get a party together consider running this adventure and I hope that you enjoy it.
I hope you don’t miss a thing so come back daily in the coming week and year. This is so you can experience the creation of the next adventure as it evolves and shapes out. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Krencham Fields

This week we have an ambush, whether during a hasty retreat or a noble rescue but regardless of the when it happens in the Krencham Fields. These fields are long overgrown with the now wild crops of the previous farms that used to flourish in this area. Now these fields of high wheat, corn and other plants make it difficult to pinpoint where dangers are lurking.

So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s map.

Krencham Fields

Krencham Fields – Created in Inkarnate

The raised road provides good visibility in the surrounding area but it is rather narrow. Trees have fallen or dropped limbs from the recent storm and so there are hazards scattered near the roads. The real hero of tis map is the 4 feet (1.2 meters) high crops that basically hide anything that is medium sized from view if its sneaking through them.

A few blended background textures tonight and some simple tree placement to follow the narrative of the map. Different shades of the background texture add a bit of depth and add to the appearance of a blended crop-grass field. Many, many wheat crops n the field, some craggy hill assets to hide the raised section of the road (still don’t know how to use the dig tool effectively so this works ok, for now.).

Other than that a simple map that with some small adjustments could be extended indefinitely if you want to turn it into a chase scene. Fitting for either rescuing the Orster’s or moving out of the area surrounding the town.

Thanks for coming to check the map tonight. Tomorrow we reveal the stat-block for the creature so don’t forget to come back for the last few days of this week and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Luistira City – Created in Nightcafe.

The party had been drawn to Luistira – the city of steel to replenish their arms and armour after a few intensive battles. The steel here at the beginning of the Ferrous highway was famous. Many of the best smiths worked here and several notable blades had been created in the several forges that were established here.

However it was not the shopping that kept the party here but a request for aid.

The Iron Harvest was calling for people to escort its many wagons to the Kings Castle, a few days from Luistira, and they were asking for only the best.ย
Either those with great repute would be hired or those who could test themselves and prove themselves worthy and it just so happened that the party was also heading in that direction.
โ€œWhat makes you think you are ready to join the Iron Harvest Guard?โ€ the guard, dressed more like a royal guard than a caravan mercenary, asked.ย
โ€œWe have heard word of your party. Some good work but surely these tales of your exploits and endeavours have been exaggerated.โ€ a second spoke, this time a female who was dressed as the part of a caravaner.ย
โ€œNow Sal, we canโ€™t jump to conclusions.โ€ the man spoke looking across his broad shoulder to where she sat in the back room at the inn.
โ€œEasy captain. Let them speak. They have a reputation for getting the job done.โ€ Sal continued leaning towards the party.

Stonebridge Fort

A simple map tonight with quite a few overlapping textures and some stamps that were blown up to be gigantic proportions – but what to expect for Stonebridge Fort. This massive, somewhat abandoned fort looms over the country side and dominates the landscape.

So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s map.

Stonebridge Fort

416ThStFo

Stonebridge Fort – Created in Inkarnate

The massive stone blocks and, surprisingly intact slabs of stone that make up the shingles for this roof are a testament to the size of the inhabitants. Blocks of stone easily 10ft in length and 5ft in height and depth make up some of the stairs leading to the large gate and door. The landscape itself is rocky and treacherous with beasts hunting around its edges to make a meal out of the lost or desperate.

About five layers of blended paint make up the background with some of spilling over to the foreground to blend in the stonework. The stairs and walls come from the same art pack with the roof and doorway coming from another which… gives it a bit of a disjointed appearance which I don’t overly hate – but not a super fan of. The stone under the walls had to be colour adjusted to get somewhat close – it will do but I would’ve preferred a closer colour match to the background.

As this is in the mountains away from people splashes of grass would appear amongst he rock – taking inspiration from rocky-mountainous hikes I have gone through where plant life finds a way to survive.

Thanks for coming to check the map tonight. It’s a rather big one this week and I think it will make for some interesting encounters. The weeks not over so don’t forget to come back tomorrow for more content and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Black Throne

The Black Throne sits within the Black Tower and waits for the ritual that invigorates the corrupted Deva that calls the hallowed halls home. That is what a wise prophet once said about such a cursed place but many know it as the birth place as the righteous power of the Hero of Verone. This is where we find our final battle and encounter this week and there was a bit of fun in making this map tonight.

So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s map.

The Black Throne

415ThBlTh

The Black Tower Throne – Created in Inkarnate

The Black throne sits resplendently bathed in angelic light in the middle of the platform at the tallest part of the tower. The seals and symbols that surround it only allow the hero of Verone to sit within. But this in itself is the trap of the week.

Sharp glasslike walls make up most of the towers interior giving it a cursed and somewhat organic look. The crumbling metal and stone walls are studded with spikes, some intentional and some from the metal baring rusting and snapping inwardly that snare and impale the unweary. The smooth obsidian-black marble stairs are slippery when wet – which is an issue when fighting things that bleed. But there are mysterious wyrdlights that cast a blue, red and purple glow through the tower.

A few overlapping textures here, dark stone, stone tiles and a shadow make up the majority of the background art assets where overlapping and layered stone makes up for the edge of the void. Pockets of light, a throne, two magical seals and then walls makes up the rest which, I think, gives the rest of the room a forbidden and foreboding vibe.

Thanks for visiting tonight but don’t think the Black Throne will let you get away that easily. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow to meet the foes for this week and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Garius had told them that the Cult of the Dragon slayer could be found near the Pickled Hog Inn and posing as beggars and gamblers. He also produced a card that had a mark defaced into the surface – a Dragon Slayer card from the three dragons Ante card game. โ€œIf you can sneak this card into your hand and play it, they will show you where you need to go. But be careful as that is all we could get out of the cultist.โ€

Arkensol Arena

Welcome back to another Map night but this week we have an actual map with the Arkensol Arena! This thing is probably the largest map I have tried in a while and for good reason. 40 squares (200feet) in diameter makes it a very large map and even the longest ranged weapons will struggle. But that’s something that we can investigate later.

So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s map.

Arkensol Arena

Arkensol Arena – Created in Inkarnate

Various walls, barricades, crates and platforms make up this magically sealed arena. Towering walls sink into the ground where a sandy battlefield with battlements, trees and other obstacles make it easy to hide, but harder to stay hidden as the hunters become the prey.

A lot easier this week as there isn’t soo many overlapping layers and only a few asset packs involved. This means that is quick to get out and created without spending hours working on the map.

Not much of a description tonight as we have one more night left in which to explore. So don’t forget to come back tomorrow as we wrap up this adventure and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Ironwood Druids Meet – Made in nightcafe.

โ€œThe Ironwood forest is an ancient place ruled by a conclave of druids who have protected the lands for generations. The woods themselves have trees that grow into the sky and boast the strongest wood that you can find in the content. Thatโ€™s the main reason why the Druid conclave protects these woods.

They need to protect these lands from the people in the neighbouring kingdoms from harvesting the trees for their own use.โ€

The travelling bard that the party had met up with had not stopped talking since they met along the road heading towards Crakenburg to assist in carting grain out as part of a job from a few wealthy merchants. Despite the party liking company the bard had personally alerted bandits to their position, a pack of wolves had followed his noise and no game dared to stay nearby as they travelled through the woods.

But the party stopped him talking as up ahead the forest was silent and they could see a few humans standing perfectly still as if they were in trouble.

After the conflict with the woods themselves the party find themselves following Kevin in the direction of the druids enclave. The druids are the only ones who could deal with that many locusts and protect the job that the party were here for – escorting the caravan and its harvest of grain and straw back to the merchants.

Itโ€™s not long until the party is walking towards a giant Ironwood tree. Where its roots and trunk meet has formed a hollow under its massive form and stairs have been shaped out of the earth leading upwards to the space in the tree. Stone carvings of animals line the pathway and the sense of them watching the party as they move upwards follow them even until they are stepping into the hollow.

The area within is sparse with a single man kneeling at a short wooden table as he works a mortar and pestle.

The Skipping Sailfish – Made in nightcafe.

The ship had bobbed up and down for a few weeks now on the seas. The crew and captain had turned out to be as experienced as the party had been told. The journey had not been difficult or dangerous with the exception of sighting something monstrous swimming at the surface of the sea – which the crew did well to avoid.ย

The Ruined Tower – Created in nightcafe.

The next morning the party were charged with helping to gather supplies and odd jobs for the villagers. The supplies were then given to the Party and sailors as thanks for the oddjobs and at night they feasted around the fire again.ย After a long day of loading the ship the party sat down to rest and watched the ship bob up and down in the waves. They hadnโ€™t seen the Mirage Fish again since the first night but they had frequently cast their gaze towards the keep.

As the party silences the first skeleton they notice that a single golden coin falls out of its shattered skull which glows a dull green as it hits the water. As the other skeletons fall a similar golden object, bracelet, earring, coin, ring and the like also fall into the water. Soon other lights appear in the water beneath their feet as the battle rages on. Soon the entire inside of the broken keep is glowing with light and the party can feel this throbbing arcane energy attempt to wash over them as the light glows upon them.

โ€œThe Treasure. Itโ€™s the reason these lost souls are cursed. I should never have come to this place!โ€ Turk calls at some point during the encounter before climbing up and out. He at least throws a rope down for the party members as he runs off.

Attack on the Princesses camp

This week we have the adventure revolving around an attack on the Princesses camp and the aftermath of finding the princess gone. So with the adventure progressing from last nights revelation on the hobgoblin threat we need a bigger battlefield for this. As an A2 sheet of paper in size means that it can be printed off (even over several a4 sheets of paper) as well as being large enough for long lasting battles.

So hold onto the reigns once more as we launch into tonight’s adventure.

Attack on the Princesses camp

412ThAtPrCa

Large Camp attacked – created in Inkarnate

Trees, tents, camp fires and a wagon or two line up tonight’s map. This provides ample room to hide, sneak and get cover from the flurries of arrows that fly onto the battlefield and into the party’s ranks.

Its a rather deep map tonight with the objective being the wagon that Sal steers taking off across the map and being hounded by goblins, orcs, hobgoblins and Wargs as they try and flee with the goods within the wagon.

Like with last week a few overlapping textures at work here, different shades of grass, dirt and different sizes of the texture too to try and give it a blended feel. Trees make up the edges to give consistency in the forest as well as the same three main tent styles. The bed rolls set to have 30 degrees random rotation means that there is some variance there and some wineskins and pans make it look like the camp was lived in recently.

But that’s all it is tonight. Two A4s wide and two high makes printing it achievable on smaller home printers or at print-shops.
