The Dryads Raiders

Welcome to another Fight-night where tonight we look at The Dryads Raiders. This week we look at quantity over Quality Satyrs march to Dornsbury. But that’s not all this week as like last weekend I will have a surprise. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s look at some creatures!

The Dryads Raiders

326FrTDrRa

Satyr

Fast of foot, not very strong or durable the Satyr is an interesting enemy. Resistant to magical effects having a horde of these guys to contend with will make cutting them down a bit harder. However the volley of arrows will likely do the trick

Between 15 and 16 of these creatures will join the fray, All will loose a volley of arrows before a few go to engage in melee with the party to try and pin them down. Drawn to violence in their drunken states these creatures will be a bit slow to realise that the yare in danger before its too late. Being the core of the dryads raiders these creatures should be a fun component.

Satyr – created in Tetra-cube

Dryad – Willow

Now while we have the Satyr being the dryads raiders the dryad herself will be standing back and using her magical abilities to try and entangle the opponents. More importantly the ability to charm humanoids and beasts can protect her from some damage. Her Satyr allies will not attack a charmed creature but instead will call out to it for aid trying to sew confusion in the the party. This with the other surprises coming will make for a fun adventure.

Thanks for visiting tonight. Now that the weekend is here you can’t forget to set aside some time for your tabletop. Continuing and making progress on your hobby helps sustain the momentum behind it. This momentum will drive you to complete more and at a sustained pace. So don’t forget to keep setting time aside for it. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Kestra the snow fox

Welcome to a special Saturday update where I reveal Kestra the snow fox and another lycanthrope stat block. This week the motivation for our creatures is slightly different. Not to kill or spread lycanthropy; well maybe the wererats and werewolf’s may, but another force drives them. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s meet the snow fox!

Kestra the snow fox

325SaKeTSnFo

Kestra the snow fox

Driven from her home town when her Lycanthropy was revealed Kestra lived a rough life. A wizard of some power she rarely used her magic but this didnโ€™t stop the rumours spreading about her. Running a small business to bake bread for the village she was accused of using her magic to bewitch and spread illness through the village.

This came to a dramatic end when several young men began to fight over her affection, which she didnโ€™t encourage or reciprocate and a coincidental illness spread through some of the other young women. Suspicious of this she was followed into the woods where she was caught shifting to her fox form. She was then run out of town and her home burnt to the ground.

She was taken in by a community of other lycanthropes which was led by an old werefox. With her prowess in magic she helped build a stronger community and eventually took the mantle of leadership. But the village started suffering from another illness and the cost of medicine was too much. This happened around the same time as reports of a band of lycanthropes plaguing the roads.

Using the stories to rattle the travellers Kestra began to also rob from the roads finding that people were more willing to hand over their riches if a wererat or werewolf appeared before them on the road.

Ambush in the Snow

Welcome to another Fight-night where tonight we look at an ambush in the snow. This Friday, back to the normal pattern of for Friday creature nights. Tonight we have two types of Lycan’s bringing something a bit different to the party. But the driver for their attacks – well that’s something that we can wait for the weekend. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s look at some creatures!

Ambush in the Snow

Werewolf

Stronger than there verminous brethren in the cause the werewolves will launch a volley from their longbows during a surprise round before charging across the snow at the humans – shifting as they charge.

Werewolf – created in Tetra-cube

Wererat

The wererats are a bit more cowardly than the werewolves – likely to use their turn to move and launch a volley from their crossbows as opposed to charging into melee. When the battle turns against them they will shift into a giant rat and try to escape into the snow, digging if needed.

Thanks for visiting tonight. Now there is one more appearance in the form of a stat block that I will reveal this weekend. So don’t forget that this weekend I aim to produce the conclusion of this week, and last week as a matter of fact. Both of which you don’t want to miss. With the weekend here don’t forget to set aside some time for your own tabletop and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Shifting Snow

Welcome to a Thursday night where we look at the encounter with the shifting drifters under the shifting snow. A bit of a tongue twister there but let’s not dwell on the shift/drift theme of this week for too long. So let’s instead sit back, grab a coffee and imagine the encounter ahead!

The Shifting Snow

325ThTShSn

The encounter map of this week is a simple one. The carriage and wagons have their wheels caught in previously hidden ruts in the snow, first they think its only the carriage but the wagon then gets stuck in a separate rut-trap hidden by the snow and some spell placed branches over the top.

Around the road there are patches of rocks, boulders really, that span about five feet in width and around four feet tall. Enough for someone to stand up, see above and launch an arrow or crossbow bolt. Around these rocks are thick brambles and bracken. This hides dugouts that are perfect places for someone to sit and wait for a trap to be sprung.

A tree then falls over behind the wagon and carriages pinning them. The previously sawn through but bound tree had the bind hidden under the snow. This trap really isn’t designed to hurt or maim but to pin prey in place. But if a party member or NPC was at the back of the procession it could be fatal for them.

However keep eyes may see the signs of traps in advance. If the traps are sprung then the ambush happens with a surprise round, if not then there is no surprise round.

This encounter happens immediately after Harry reaches the carriage. In fact this also triggers a few other things that the party will have to deal with and assess. However that is for a different nights update.

Thoughts

I like ambush encounters, there I said it. It doesn’t make me a bad DM or a one that focuses on TPKs. But it does give me opportunities to challenge my party. Generally unless they are the aggressors in an adventure which puts the party on the font foot. This leads to a one side fault where a well executed plan from your players can spell doom for your encounter. However by putting them on the backfoot they have to come up with a plan on the fly with what they have immediately.

This can lead to truly rememberable encounters where they have to MacGuiver a win from toothpicks, an orange and the catapult spell (maybe a lethal combination). This is far more rewarding than throwing several fireballs and mopping up the stragglers.

Thanks for visiting again tonight. While the weeks seem to go to fast I look forward to the weekend where I have a few large projects to move on. So don’t forget to come back the next few nights to see the full reveal and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Mountain King and The Monster

Welcome to a Fight-night Thursday…. tonight we meet The Mountain King and The Monster he has convinced to join him. A bit of a short one tonight, but more will be revealed in the coming days! So Sit back, grab a coffee and let’s look at some creatures!

The Mountain King and The Monster

The Mountain King

The Mountain king, self proclaimed obviously, is a vicious but ever so slightly cunning Stone giant. Keen on expanding his territory he made a deal with a Chimera to protect and assist in his conquests.

Stone Giant – created in Tetra-cube

The Monster

The monster of the mountain king, a Chimera, is vain, greedy and stubborn – all the normal traits of one of her species. However she has learnt that being in the employ of another creature isn’t all that bad.

Thanks for visiting tonight. Don’t forget that the next couple days we will expand more upon this encounter including the map of the lair. However don’t let the creatures fool you as there may be more that meets the eye at first glance when it comes to these two monsters. So don’t forget to come back the next few nights to see the full reveal and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Hunter Knight

Welcome to a Fight-night where this Friday (finally!) we reveal the beast that somehow made its way from Chult as well as Rebeka, The Hunter Knight. Charge also makes a special appearance as we look at all the stat blocks for this weeks adventure which we teased Wednesday night with The Hunt for Squires. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

The Hunter Knight

The Hunter of Squires…

The metriacanthosaurus is more than just a big name. A large beast with useful forearms this creature was a vicious and fast creature. Whilst not as big as a T-rex or as agile as a velociraptor these creatures were brutal and large enough to pick up humans within their jaws.

Adept at hunting and stalking their prey these creatures are fast and shouldn’t be underestimated.

Metriacanthosaurus – created in Tetra-cube

The Hunter Knight – Rebeka and Charger

The hunter knight herself, Rebeka and her faithful companion, Charger come into focus this week. A stalwart night that buffs her allies and is brutal while mounted and a creature that is defensive and loves to charge towards larger predators.

The Pachyrhinosaurus is a large crested dinosaur, a ceratopsian, a beaked dinosaur with a large bony crest. A relative of the Triceratops these creatures faced their aggressors head on with horns and their sheer strength.

Thanks for visiting tonight to meet Rebeka, Charger and… The beast? (It feels like I should give the Metri a name..) but hold on as we have a busy weekend ahead. So don’t forget to drop by for the remaining days this week and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Stone Beasts

Welcome to a Fight-night Friday that will leave you petrified as we meet the Stone Beasts of this weeks adventure. This week we have a few encounters with the wilder inhabitants of the Deepgrove Forest. But we also have an attack at a camp site as well as the final creature encounter in the Stone Garden itself. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Encounter in the forest

This week is about ambushes in the forest. Tonight in particular we have the skilled lizardfolk ambushing the party as they venture close to a water source and then an attack by a lone Cockatrice as they recover from their encounter later that night.

The lizardfolk are fearsome warriors. Attacking from a range with Javelins before engaging in melee these creatures fight for both survival and food. The Brute will wade into the front lines and use its bulk and strength to try and break the defences of the party. While the other Lizardfolk would harass and act like flankers for their larger cousin.

The cockatrice on the other hand is a bit of flavour with a dangerous undertone. It should either act like a red herring for the source of the stone statues OR it will make them think of what else it could be. Either way I think its a good addition to this weeks encounter.

Stone Lair Guardians

This one is harder, the younger and the older basilisk. I would like to think its a mated pair or a parent and child that are defending their lair but any narrative would do. One of each though for a party of level 7 adventurers or it will be too much.

Attacking quicker the smaller basilisk maybe will be over zealous, or as the lore of the basilisk goes the older they get the more sluggish they become. Relying on ambushing their prey rather than running them down. However there is a very real risk of death with this encounter so the party best beware.

Thanks for dropping by tonight to get a glimpse of the stone beasts for this weeks encounter. This weekend I have some more hobbying to get done. a reveal of a painted mini or several (hopefully) and then the end of week writeup! So don’t forget to come back for that. And lastly as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Martial Champions contest

Welcome to another Friday night where we look at the Contestants of the Martial Champions contest. These contestants have proven themselves worthy to partake in the contest and all of them are honourable. Well most of them are. But some of that will be covered tonight, and the rest on the weekend! So join me as we glimpse at the contestants. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Martial Champions contest

321FrMaChCo

As the party member sponsored to the contest of champions sat down after their first fight the next combatant got up. Standing opposite the wiry young man a hulking Tiefling clad in glistening armour rolled his shoulders, a magic blade stretched in his hand.

“Now as with the previous bout both contestants will be blessed with a powerful enchantment that will prevent them from dying. However the pain from each others blows will be felt just as keenly.” at this some of the crowd roared with approval. “Now we have Tyson Emergel, a mammoth of a man…” The man began to drone on to introduce the Tieflling and human in turn. However the party noticed that whilst warming up the young man, Karl, looked to the crowd, nodded once and his demeanor changed. The party tried to track to see what the cause of the interaction was but they were greeted by a sea of faces.

The Bout

“And may the lords and ladies of light bless this contest. Both contestants when ready, enter the circle and begin your fight!” the announcer called. Before the call was made Tyson was striding forward, blade ready with a layer of frost coating the blade already. After a few moments Karl stepped forward and rushed at Tyson. The counter attack was like lightning and with a single swing Tyson hit Karl across the chest and he flew backwards, nearing he edge of the ring.

Either Tyson had the strength of giants or something wasn’t right. A heart beat later Tyson strode forward undeterred as Karl sat up, coughing up blood before dropping his sword and yelling “Yield! I Yield. I am to worn out from training that to continue this fight would not be fair for my fans, or my opponent.” And with that Karl stepped out of the ring.

A hush heralded the chorus of booing and yells of anger. However the resignation seemed to be accepted as Tyson was declared the winner and moved onto the next bout.

“Dishonourable thing that,” a fellow contestant said from near by as he leant over. “The names Sue, Sue Shawkaft. I’ve seen Karl fight before and he just didn’t even try this time. Somethin’s not right then. Well.. It looks like I am up against You and I progressed to the next round. Best of Luck to you.” Sue said with a smile, a larger bottom tooth betraying her orcish heritage.

Thoughts

Now the idea of a contest being rigged is nothing new. But being rigged to what reason, well we will find out this weekend! Now I do normally produce Statblocks and tonight is no exception! So see below!

Thanks for dropping by tonight for another warmup for this weekends contest! As we get ever closer to the weekend, one more sleep, I have busy weekend at the tabletop. So don’t forget to visit again this weekend for more glorious hobby and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Uncovering the Secrets of the Keep

Fright night brings the attention of the party to the group uncovering the secrets of the keep. Instead of a typical front-on combat this one is filled with magic. So it will be prone to being unbalanced which can make it harder for us. The task we have is staging the combat. We need it to feel like one fluid encounter but having it go through phases or stages. This will help balance it out without making it too difficult, I hope. So join me at this brief glimpse at the encounter this week tonight. Sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Uncovering the Secrets of the Keep

320FrTGnOYe

This week we have a few mages investigating the ruins and causing all types of issues. The motif will be revealed this weekend however the combat prowess can be revealed tonight!

The idea behind the spells taken from the wizards is a good mixture of damage and Area control. The spells could be used in their efforts to explore as well as hinder the party. This is how I would design a wizard I would play so it only makes sense that mercenaries would do the same.

While Uncovering the secrets of the keep the wizards would use catapult, mage hand and levitate to move debris around. Rhyan would use her spells to influence people and to battle anything particularly dangerous.

Fireball wont be used that frequently, the reason is that it could damage the valuable items and things they are looking for. But they are there if the going gets rough.

Of course they wouldn’t be much without body guards so having a few low CR humanoids to do the heavy lifting would be in order. However being a powerful mage it already will be difficult to balance this encounter as all wizards or sorcerer’s can decimate a party if luck is on their side.

The Gnolls of Yeenoghu

Another night of fighting has come and this Friday the weekend brings with us the Gnolls of Yeenoghu. Now the way that gnolls are created, if you want to look it up, is a bit gruesome but fascinating. This week is all about gnolls and the demon lord Yeenoghu’s hatred of civilisation. In his unchecked destruction the foes that remained gave birth to the first gnolls where hyenas feasted on the slain. From there the gnolls were born from hyena’s as they were transformed from the demons corruption. So before I get way to deep in my adoration for the lore on gnolls let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

The Gnolls of Yeenoghu

319FrTGnOYe

The Gnolls of Yeenoghu

The Bloodhunt pack is normally gnolls and hyenas. But where the hyenas sup from tainted flesh and the corrupting energies aren’t quite right enough then other variations emerge. The energy being too strong then Witherings and Pack lords are born. Even Chosen of Yeenoghu can be created – however it is not always the case.

The scholars have recorded different variants of gnolls where under the right conditions, and given the right prey, gnolls fit for a purpose can be created.

Gnoll Stalkers

This sees the Gnoll stalker born. Small, about the size of a goblin or halfling but quiet and lethal these hunters and scouts of the bloodhunt are lethal. They ambush their prey with a volley of arrows before closing in to feast on their flesh.

Due to their size and being seen as lesser beings of Yeenoghu only Hyena’s tolerate being around them. The larger gnolls and even giant Hyena’s treat them as prey and fodder when no civilised race is within sight to bully or slaughter.

Gnoll Called to Yeenoghu

When a particularly favoured Giant Hyena feasts on a particularly tainted meal they have the chance to be called into Yeenoghu’s service. Whilst different to a gnoll, fang of Yeenoghu who can create gnolls much in the same way that their demon spawn-father created the first gnolls these gnolls are heralds to the demon in another way. The uncontrolled bloodlust and hunger for destruction reigns true for these creatures. However strong, powerful and desiring destruction they lack the cunning of other leaders of the bloodhunt and are seen as more shocktroops.

Closer in size to bugbears and ogres these creatures wade into battle and use their strength to bully and controll the smaller races.

Thanks for dropping by tonight. As always don’t forget to come back this weekend as we explore more of this glorious hobby and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,
