Kalehgrul Landing Market

Now its not uncommon for the first thing people to see when they enter a city is the markets or stalls and the Kalehgrul landing market is no exception. Now a simple and quick one tonight as the emphasis should be around discovering that goes on and not soo heavily on combat. But there will be combat, heed my words. But… before I reveal tomorrows reveal let’s grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s map!

Kalehgrul Landing Market

Housed on the edge of the cliffs before the deep takes over the market place has the best view of all. Its also got a large amount of foot traffic so the risk of thievery or falling over the edge doesn’t outweigh the potential for profit.

Several lanterns light the edge of the cities rocky platform and particularly where the two bridges connect it outwards. Guards patrol this area constantly and the traffic in and out is monitored heavily.

The Streets of Kalehgrul

After the party deal with the raiders on the Melarn farm they make their way to the streets Kalehgrul with the young priestess in tow. Now this week will go fast as there is a lot to catch up on on our way to the deep dark but never fear – we will try and blend it together coherently. So sit back grab a coffee and let’s roll into this weeks adventure!

Kalehgrul streets – Created in Nightcafe

In the distance the lights from the underdark city of Kalehgrul appeared like a collection of fireflies or other luminescent life. But as they got closer the stone buildings, torches and blue lights that revealed a touch of magic in the city came into view. Kalehgrul, while not being massive, was still a large city.

With no walls or towers the city appeared to be built on the top of a massive flattened stalagmite with two bridges leading into and out of the city. This meant that the only ways to approach the city were in the funnelled bridges, a steep climb up the stalagmite or from the air โ€“ most of which they had covered by soldiers and mercenaries.

Walking with the Melarn family they were granted access pretty quickly despite a few questioning looks towards the party and their prisoner, a daughter of the Oโ€™lorun family โ€“ a rival to the Melarns. But Izzrysn muttered some quick words in Drow and the guards let them pass quickly.

โ€œI said that you were my new property, my slaves. Itโ€™s the way of this city and most of this world beneath yours.โ€ he explained once out of earshot from the guards. โ€œYou never know when a swift lie will save your life down here.โ€

Onwards they walked past shops and houses that sold just about everything that could be bought from food, tools and adventuring gear to services, slaves and more risquรฉ items. Eventually they found themselves at the entrance to an elaborate shop which had โ€œMelarnโ€™s silksโ€ scrawled out in both common and undercommon on the sign. Entering they moved quickly and surely to a room on the second story where they sat the young priestess on a chair. โ€œNow, why did your family want us dead?โ€ Qistra demanded as she pulled out several metal tools of โ€˜persuasionโ€™.

Thoughts

Now this weeks adventure will go very fast. This is just the opening part but this ‘scene’ can be delayed as long as the party want if they need to or want to go shopping. But to find our the rest you’ll just have to come back over the next few days.

Thanks for joining me for another week of adventuring in the underdark. This weeks starts off role play heavy and will quickly, very quickly turn action packed. So don’t forget to come back each day to not miss that. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Frozen Shard

Tonight and I have created a zine for this weeks adventure. The Frozen Shard. This adventure can be used system agnostic as we explore other RPGs out there other than D&D. So please adjust to what ever creatures you are using in your adventure! However as always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube currently provides the stat-blocks for creatures in this adventure.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, The Frozen Shard. If you like this format please let me know and I hope you enjoy.

Platara Glacier near the Ice Spire- created in nightcafe.

After rescuing the people from the Icewalker tribe, the party looked through the snowstorm that had blanketed the landscape when they entered the Den of the Lost souls. The Ice Spire towered above them, so close that its frozen form called to them.

The Frozen shard of ice, the first in several places that Andrasa called and singled out as important places. Would it hold treasure, wealth or powerful artefacts? Was it a bastion of knowledge or a prison for one of her enemies. Time would tell and the party was within walking distance of it.

Thanks for joining me tonight for another Zine. This one had more content added to the Zine but like a few of my other ones I kept that in the Zine, not the blog. So you will just have to trust me on that and grab a copy of the Zine to check it out.

Next time you get a party together consider running this adventure and I hope that you enjoy it.

I hope you don’t miss a thing so come back daily in the coming week. This is so you can experience the creation of the next adventure as it evolves and shapes out. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Melarn Cavern

Now the Melarn cavern is where we find our map today. I couldn’t bring myself to make another map of a building (although the ruins were fun) so I tried to create something that would capture the intent behind this encounter. Two ways in, one way out. Before I get too excited about this weeks adventure let’s stop there, grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s map!

Melarn Cavern

Melarn Homestead – Created in Inkarnate

The Melarn homestead, the smaller of their many houses, is further away from the busy cities where the family makes their claim to fame. To the south is the large cavern where the spiders are kept and their silk is harvested.

The road to the north takes them to Kalehgrul and is the direction the attackers have come from. They may be able to sneak around or fight their way through. Or, simply, defeat the attackers then move on from there.

Stalagmitesย grow in this cavern and they provide places to hide and get cover. But they do this for the attackers as well.

A bit of a shorter one tonight for a map. Don’t forget to come back this weekend for more content and to see where the rest of this adventure takes us. And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Falling into Darkness

This week kicks off immediately from the outcome of the last adventure in the Carrion Swamp and the party find themselves falling into darkness. I’ll save some of the mystery behind what happens but it makes a few big assumptions that I will cover tonight. It’s best if just we get stuck into it, so sit back grab a coffee and let’s roll into this weeks adventure!

Falling into Darkness

341MoFaIDa

Duraegis – Created in Artbreeder

In the final moments of the well of souls collapsing the tides of undead grey in intensity. Urged towards the well the shambling and crawling hordes faulted as an earthquake rumbled through the ground. A sickening cracking sound resonated through the air followed the rumble as the core of power for the well of souls shattered. Almost immediately the undead approaching the party fell to the ground as the necromantic energy that was commanding their broken forms fled their body. A moment of quiet broached the swamp before the tumbling of a piece of rubble hinted at a worse fate than being buried under undead.

Pieces of ruins, undead, water, earth and vegetation started moving across the ground and through the air towards the well of souls. A low howl began to rise in the ruins as a vortex of magical backlash ripped outwards and started to pull at the party. Then the unimaginable happened, one of the party members slipped and stumbled as a piece of ruins slammed into them and they fell backwards and into the shattered well of souls. As the power grew the other party members faced similar fates as the well devoured the bodies of the undead and began to pull down the ruins onto the vortex to seal it from the outside.

Falling was the first feeling for the adventurers before they landed heavily in a strand of sticky substance that immediately slowed and nearly stopped their descent. For those who didnโ€™t pass out they were in near complete darkness except for a few sources of glowing light that moved around high above them. After a few moments they realised that they had crashed through a large spider’s web and landed on hard stone. Their eyes adjusted and a large cavern was revealed before them with spiders spinning webs amongst giant mushrooms and stalagmites that filled the cavern.

Waiting for the rest of their adventuring party to wake up they started to come to grips with what had happened. what had caused the magical vortex and, when was the last time they had seen Vikira. They were sure she had been with them next to the well of souls during the fight with the vampire and undead. As the rest of the party stirred, a single place came to mind that would fit the description of what they were seeing. They had found their way into the Underdark.

Thoughts

Now the assumptions that are made is that the party don’t flee from the fight with the vampire or undead and that they either fail to stop all the undead OR they destroy the Well of Souls themselves. The second is that one or more of the party fail saving throws to avoid falling AND being knocked into the vortex by flying rubble. And the last assumption is. If a party member does fall through that the others will try and save them before the ruins bury the well of souls.

If the party don’t the story takes a different turn. They either attempt to get to the final place, the deep dark, which is really another travel arc across the land to the entrance to the underdark closes to the deep dark. OR they get approached by a messenger of Lucile who is trying to find them with some urgent news. That she was able to decipher more of Andrasa’s notes and she was warning a that these points were dangerous seals that cant be broken…

But more on that a different time.

The City of Hark – created in nightcafe.

Rumours have flitted around the city of Hark for many years of magic, sorcery and wealth hoarded by some of the noble families of the city. Some had been investigated but nothing had ever come from such rumours.

Some investigators quickly rose through the ranks and were granted manors and a life of privilege of which they hadnโ€™t been entitled to before as a result of their investigation. This only spurred the rumours on more.

However, the city of Hark is a mercantile city where religion, wealth and politics blend into a miasma of discord and discontent. The Party find themselves in a busy chaotic city where your station seems to be judged by the size of your purse.

Heart of the Ruins

The time has come to visit the heart of the ruins. How the party interact with the map is up to them but this little map has a bit of everything. Boggy water, plants and vines that could snare your feet as you travel through. Rocky terrain and oh, I don’t know… I giant glowing orb of power? So let’s roll up our pants legs and dive in to tonight’s map!

Heart of the Ruins

The well of Souls – Created in Inkarnate

The areas around the building provide a good vantage point and a good place to hide from the undead that will be swarming around the well of souls (the big glowy thing). However the ground is unstable with rotting vegetation, vines, leaves and debris from the ruins themselves so whoever treads across them best be packing an ankle brace.

The trees are twisted with large thick roots that piece into the soil. small creatures can hide within them (undead or alive) and they are easy enough to climb as well. The bushes along the way are thorny but donโ€™t impede movement as such โ€“ but if unlucky they may nick a coin purse or bag.

The area in the centre dips inwards towards the well. The level where the well is is five feet lower than where the edge up the top is. This makes it harder to see down into the pit and the well itself, but that doesnโ€™t seem to stop anything.

The orb, the power source in the well, emits a force field that disintegrates what touches it โ€“ however it fails. The more undead (or attacks from magical items, spells or effects) that hit the shield the more the power wanes. But it’s impossible to tell whether the shield was to keep things away from the core OR to keep the magic from the core contained. Regardless it looks like it’s been here for centuries and the magic is both waning and flaring.

I enjoyed this swampy map tonight. I think the multiple layers of dirt, stone, grass and water help give it a swampy feel. The rubble was fun to work with but, not super convincing – I will have to look at how to improve that in the future. But that’s enough out of me on that tonight. So don’t forget to come back this weekend for more content and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Carrion Swamp Ruins

This week finds the party trekking through the swamp trying to find the source the the undead attacks before its too late. Eventually, after some delays, they find their way to the Carrion Swamp Ruins. But let’s stop there before I get carried away. So sit back grab a coffee and let’s roll into this weeks adventure!

The Carrion Swamp Ruins

The Carrion Swamp Ruins – Created in Nightcafe

Recovering from their encounter with some of the natives of the swamps the party push through some dense brush to reveal pillars and walls of stone. An age ago the scale and size of these buildings would have been a sight to have seen however whatever calamity befell here left the city in ruins.

Vikira stood nearby. Her clothes mostly ruined rags and the confidence she had earlier now gone she gazed upon the city that her parents had wasted their fortune in finding. Everywhere she looked it appeared as if the jungled was trying to erase history itself as vines, trees and stagnant water covered as far as her eyes could see. But that wasnโ€™t what her eyes were locked on.

Up ahead the figures of undead were shambling across the clearing and some even pulling themselves out of the swampy water in their search forโ€ฆ whatever undead search for. A strange hum could be felt pulsing through the loamy soil and occasionally the thrum would build into a pulse that caused ripples to form in the waters service. Something nearby, in the city, was thrumming with power.

The party looked onwards, fatigued as the trek through the swamp had taken longer than anticipated. Several undead, large swamp creatures, lizardfolk and some ancient humans that were skeletons now, shuffled forwards and towards the centre of the ruins. There was no doubt that that is where they would find the source of the undead.

Now that we are in the final stages of this part of the adventure we have… skipped forward a little bit. But don’t worry as this will be covered, you will just have to download the Zine when it comes out. The missing scout

The Missing Scout

Steffani looked across the paperwork in front of her as she chewed on a unlit cigar. The pint that Marie had brought in with the meal from earlier grew warmer on the desk as she looked across the reports. The Lord of Warrensdeep had promised her enough gold to fund thirteen teams but had delivered just enough for four.

One team were off investigating the confirmed sightings for Abnormal creatures up north and weren’t due back for a few weeks based on the latest info. She didn’t believe in favourites but if she had a team that sprang to mind for the difficult jobs it was this one. A half-dragon, Elf, Dwarf and two humans made this this crew and they were the first ones she convinced to join forces with her. The proof they brought back was also enough to make the king force the lord of Warrensdeep into helping the cause.

The second team were currently cleaning up. Not a glamorous job the people in this team were not fighters nor skilled enough yet to see field work. Besides they all had a talent for magic and utilising that to clean, repair, mend and even dispose of evidence that would make the public uneasy. The disposal of body parts, creatures or even victims of the attacks was one of the conditions the lord of Warrensdeep had put upon her. “Do not let these things disturb the peace. The public can not know about what lies in the dark around their homes and this city.” So she assigned the promising mages this task and they did a good enough job with it.

The third team were a combination of ex military and renown hunters. These were her scouts and they submitted a report daily on rumours and sightings of the creatures. Anything that seemed amiss was what they reported back on and she left them on their own really. She had five people in this team and for the last month she had received nineteen reports. She was one short and she was anxiously waiting for the latest reports to come in.

Like clockwork Gwen walked in and placed a few small scrolls on her desk, four of them. Quickly opening them Steffani confirmed her suspicions. One of her scouts hadn’t reported in twice in a row. She sat back in her chair and mused on what to do. Team minรซ, were too far away to investigate in time, team atta were not fit for this type of work, the scouts, team neldรซย were all over the continent which left team canta. Team Canta consisted of the new recruits that she had sworn in today and out of all of the people under her command these were the most untested. But they had shown promise.

Writing up an order she scratched the names of the team down, Groku – a foolish but determined girl that showed grit and tenacity.

Tater was a dwarf – made of stronger tuff than most and showed a surprising resilience to the rumoured mind control ability of these creatures – perhaps the head injury had rendered him immune. Lastly she smiled at the duplicated name on the signed sheets in front of her.

That Goblin, Mordekai, may be a trouble maker but she had learnt a long time ago to not doubt someone determined to prove someone wrong.

These three will need a fourth member in their crew. She looked over the paper work in front of her and sighed. It may be best if she had them pick out their final member of the party themselves. After all these will be the people who they trust their lift and very survival to.

With that she quickly sealed the wax on the letter. Was she really sending the newcomers to Fustmach where one of her scouts was heading? She sighed and reached for the ale before clenching her fist. She nearly broke her oath as old habits started to take over. No, she will remain strong and sure headed. One wrong foot out of place from her and the dozens of people that relied on her would surely fail.

Now more on this tomorrow but it’s finally here! Another adventure weekend! So don’t forget to come back tomorrow for a double event and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage.

Ferklends’ Palisade

So this week we find the party arriving at Ferklend, finding out that there is trouble in town and that they are the possibly the heralds who will both doom and save the swamp. This tale really starts by the party being greeted by Ferklends’ Palisade and then it flows on from there. So to get a glimpse at what we are working with let’s sit down, grab a coffee and look at tonight’s map!

Ferklends’ Palisade

339ThFePa

Ferklends’ Palisade – Created in Inkarnate

The palisade is new, for reasons uncovered in a few tales spoken in yesterday’s update. But the forest and swamp beyond that is as ancient as they come. Some of the trees have been cut down to repair the few houses in the town and to build the wall and defences. A crudely dug moat that spans at its widest ten feet lays around the wall that slows down aggressors, to some degree.

A few parts of the wall open and close to allow people through before being braced back shut again. a few platforms have been constructed against the wall to give it strength and to provide a place to stand and watch the the outside of the walls. However, along the wall the faces the swamp there are several more of these platforms as the attacks from the undead has grown in frequency and number.

A quick map today that I believe gives off the grungy, swampy vibe that I was hoping for. Don’t forget to come back this weekend for more content and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,
