Durkenstaff Lost Mine

So a surprise map night tonight. I worked on a map for the Durkenstaff Lost Mine, one of the paths to the adventure this week. While some mines lead to riches, some lead to just a neat cave. This one is a bit of a mixed measure of what ever we want to put in here. So instead of a Zine this Sunday I have a map with over 400 different objects across four layers. But let’s look at the map tonight by grabbing a coffee and rolling into an adventure!

Durkenstaff Lost Mine

324SuDuLoMi

A Long rocky path and cave that has a few chambers off it. The first path to the right has a ‘secret’ path up to another little area where you may choose to hide something. Perhaps a surviving miner or two who could have some wisdom for the party.

The water is deep, Maybe not infinitely deep but deep enough that you are at risk of drowning if you get stuck in there with heavy armour. Another hazard is the pit to the end of the left passage where I wouldn’t mind this being even fifty feet deep. Deep enough that to slip would mean death.

So a bit of a weird weekend and one where I will have to ‘owe’ a Zine to us all. But the map I think is cool enough as compensation. So don’t forget to look for the zine this week coming and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Durkenstaff Cavern

A map night, surprisingly Friday night though, is here and while I work out how to make a larger map I wanted to present the final ‘arena’ for the encounter for this week – Durkenstaff Cavern. Yesterday we were introduced to the mountain king and his associate, a Chimera. Tonight we look at the cavern with skylight which is their home. A bit of a big arena for the end of adventure combat but we will see how we go.

But in order to actually get to the adventure we best sit down, grab a coffee and roll onto tonight’s adventure!

Durkenstaff Cavern

324ThDuCa

A large cavern with a small cave on one side is known as the Durkenstaff cavern. A hole in the top of the cavern allows bats and birds to fly in if they dare but also sky access for the Manticore. It also brings in rain water into a pool that’s featured in the middle of the cavern floor.

Tall craggy cliff faces litter the walls of the cavern with platforms build into the side. This gives plenty of vantage points for archers or, Chimeras to perch and watch as prey enters their vision.

Now as I prepare for a pretty full on weekend I want to thank you for coming back again this week. In fact with a bit of a mix up this week with the order of things I will have my work cut out for me in this weekends writeup. However, don’t forget to come back daily as I hope to finally reveal some more hobby progress this weekend. And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Squires Folly

Tonight and I have created another zine for this weeks adventure, Squires Folly. This adventure can be used system agnostic as we explore other RPGs out there other than D&D. So please adjust to what ever creatures you are using in your adventure! However as always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube currently provides the stat-blocks for creatures in this adventure.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, Squires Folly. If you like this format please let me know and I hope you enjoy.

The Lazy Boar Inn

The Lazy Boar inn – created in Nightcafe.

Fresh from one adventure the party decide to head through Larkem and rest. Sitting down at a highly recommended tavern, the Lazy Boar Inn, they are surprised when they appear to be the talk of the townsfolk.

Larkem is a comfortable half-way township that is between larger inland cities and a large port that acts like a gateway. Because of this they have set up an outpost for squires moving from the keeps along the coast and the main cities.

This means that there is a large population of squires and knights in the city of Larkem. Many of the squires in the Lazy Boar Inn are talking about rumours, and in particular a certain one. Nearby, about a day’s travel, the small Farming village of Fedurke was attacked recently. A large beast destroyed a barn, killed and ate nearly the entire flock of sheep and several horses.

The squires are going to go and hunt the beast as a sign of their coming knighthood. Some even approach the adventurers to ask for advice.

The hunt begins

Thanks for joining me tonight for another Zine. Next time you get a party together consider running this adventure and I hope that you enjoy it.

I hope you don’t miss a thing so come back daily in the coming week. This is so you can experience the creation of the next adventure as it evolves and shapes out. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Hunters Forest

Thursday night is here and while I had a competitive game of Warhammer tonight I still just had to create the Hunters Forest! A simple but effective map tonight that really doesn’t have that much else to explain about it. But, I’ll let you be the judge of it tonight. In order to actually get to the map though I guess we best sit down, grab a coffee and roll onto tonight’s adventure!

Hunters Forest

323ThHuFo

Large trees, bushes and a few logs litter the forest. The clearing has a few bushes and a log or two within but otherwise it heralds the end of the forest and the beginning of the plains beyond. A good place for both mounted combat, hand to hand combat and also for both the party and creatures to gain cover.

Whilst the trees may halt or prevent huge creatures from moving freely large ones should be fine. In this case the dinosaur mount of Rebeka as well as the large carnivorous creature that lurks beyond.

Hunters Forest – Created in Inkarnate

Now a bit of a larger map this week to help stress the importance of movement in a map. Distance can be an ally for both friend and foe and this week helps to stress that. Whilst I have had players not move on their turn getting some distance or even better preparing yourself for the next move you want to make can be the sign of a great combatant. However movement, like in wargames, is an skill that can see the outcome favour you more.

Thanks for joining me tonight to look at the quick map I created. 5 background terrain effects, a scattering of trees, two types of bushes, a filter and logs helped create this map. I think it goes to show what a bit of time and effort can accomplish. But this weeks adventure is not over yet and another reveal, or several, is only one night away. So make sure you come again tomorrow and on the weekend as we continue this adventure. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Despite their best efforts the last few adventures of the party were for naught. They had failed or had met a disappointing reward on the last few jobs. Their end goals were seeming to be drifting onwards to the realm of impossible as the means to attain their goals drifted further away.

However, that is before they heard of the Guildmaster of Varendeep. The rumours around the taverns and mercenary groups is that he had a near impossible task. One that many had attempted and failed over the years. However the prize was a ring of wishing. With such an artefact anyone’s dreams or goals were attainable.

Deepgrove River – Created in Nightcafe.

The low waterfall created a rich, aerated water that was refreshing and pure. As the party filled their canteens and quenched their thirst they noticed the currents in this part of the river must be flowing from the waterfall stronger.

A few large swaths of lakeweed and debris were floating across the lake and some were even heading towards them.

However after a moment the party noticed the ones moving towards them were moving faster and more direct. As they stumbled back from the riverbank, scaled humanoid shapes rushed forward from the lake, spears, crude clubs and shields fashioned from animal parts.
The Lizardfolk were a vicious and ferocious people and the party appeared to be on their menu.

Lair of the Stone Flowers Guardian

Thursday night brings us another map using Inkarnate and I present to you the Lair of the Stone Flowers Guardian! A fair bit of extras went into tonight, layers, shading, highlights, colour shifts and I think the emphasis on stone came our ok. But enough on that. Let’s just grab a coffee and march into tonight’s map!

Lair of the Stone Flowers Guardian

322ThLaOTStFlGu

Large masses of bushes obstruct vision in this weeks map. Stone boulders litter the area that provide cover for both the party and the creature(s) that stalk them. A few trees made of stone grow in this recession. At the base of the largest one stone flours that catch the light and reflect it against the stone trunk.

A cave is in the corner of the area. Chunks of skin-smooth stone litter the garden – evidence that a creature that petrifies prowls these parts of the forest.

The walls are tall here but those with the ability to climb up and out may find themselves at an advantage. Unless they want to hide. The walls are made of rocks and loose soil so the climb is prone to shifting earth.

Stone Garden – Created in Inkarnate

Now this weeks encounter may be a bit deadly. But I have a few other encounters planned that may work the party up and get them to think about the tactics moving into the last part of the adventure. This map can obviously be re-used for other means and it’s a nice 30×30 grid.

Lastly, thanks for joining me tonight. This weeks adventure is one that I hope to maybe one day set against my own party of adventurers, but I will have to see what awaits them when we get to that. Don’t forget that the weekend is nearly here so we should be looking towards our own tabletop. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The games available at the Finchford Festival were varied and all were done in a spectacular way. A test for athletics and acrobatics in which local thieves guild members paid close attention to potential future members. An archery contest for those swift with a bow or crossbow. A jousting and horsemanship competition for those trained with beast and weapon and several others.

However everyone knew that the real draw card was the Contest of Martial Champions. One where the prize was double of the others combined with the potential for long lasting contracts with mercenary guilds or even personal bodyguard positions being offered to participants who can demonstrate their skill.

The Contest of Martial Champions

Finchford Arena – Created in nightcafe.

The party watched the duel occurring on the main field at the moment. Sue Shawkaft was currently fighting a hulking goliath known only only as Butcher. of the white sands. The Goliath was strong but Sue was fast and managed to deflect the mighty blows at any moment. The result of this bout would determine who the member of the party would be against in the next round.

Being late to the arena they managed to get seats close to the gates to where the other entrants would wait and then be called forward to the field. It was at this moment that a familiar voice of Felicia Strongarm, the current crowd favourite to win, came through thick with anger.

“You tell those worms that Feli Strongarm has honour. Their offer to bow out of this tournament is a disgrace and dishonour to my name and to them. I can only hope that they placed their money on me and not Tyson to win this bout or they will be sorely disappointed.” her voice ranges with anger and forceful direction. A few muffled words were had before a hasty retreat of feet could be heard in the opposite direction.

“These fools. Threatening me? I am the strongest competitor in this competition. Pah! Their attempt to rattle me has just hardened my resolve.” A small pause. “Screw this waiting. I’ll get an ale…” and a second set of footprints head off with the jangling of mail.

The final moments of the bout

Sue had landed a few solid hits during this discussion. The Butcher was reeling from the blows and despite the blessings that kept everyone alive it did nothing for their fatigue. As the blows came in hard and heavy, so did the strain on the goliath’s muscles and stamina. Soon the announcer was calling an end to the bout with Sue being the winner.

Twenty minutes is how long it took to repair the arena, clean up some blood and prepare it for the next bout. Felicia and Tysons’. The air was thick with tension as money was exchanging hands, bets were being made and a clear divide in spectators was being made. Within a few minutes Tyson was striding onto the field, stretching and pacing like a wolf in a cage. “…Felicia Strongarm!!” the announcer called as the crowd cheered, as they did for Tyson. But minutes passed by and the announcer called officials to go search for Felicia…

A few minutes later they came back with no word, sightings or anything of the tournament favourite. The whole time Tyson stared at the party – his eyes spoke of malice and wanted bloodshed. “It’s unfortunately my duty to announce that Felicia has by lack of presence forfeited her match. The winner by default is Tyson! Officials please get the next contestant ready.” The party watched as the officials walked directly towards them. “Are you ready to enter the ring?” he asked.

Finchford Arena

Thursday night is here and we are back to Inkarnate as we look at a the basic Finchford Arena! Now this two layered arena has a few things to offer, the crowds that is. Ample vantage points and many angles to watch the combatants brawl and cut their way to victory. However despite being a contest for swordsmanship the many view points offers opportunities for external influence. Whether beneficial or otherwise remains to be seen. So grab a coffee, sharpen your pencil and let’s look at tonight’s map!

Entrants ready, fight! – Finchford Arena

So this week is all about the fights that go on as the party work out how and what they can do. Each party member will have the opportunity to partake in the contest somewhere but only one will enter the arena.

Now without giving it away there are a few stages to the arena fight but they all take place in the fenced off arena. In fact the party will be present for the majority of them unless they mysteriously don’t attend one of the rounds. But there may be an angry crowd to content with if they aren’t present.

Finchford Arena – Created in Inkarnate

Now there are steps going up to a raised platform, 20 feet above the arena floor. This gives a quick, nimble combatant an advantage if they can get the high ground early – or for those unaware of their opponents whereabouts a significant disadvantage. This map favours those who can keep track of their opponent as well as utilise the simple terrain.

Thanks for joining me again tonight. Another short one tonight preparation for a tournament zine this weekend. So if your party is wanting to flex their muscles don’t forget to come back for the last few days this week for the closing additions. Also with the weekend fast approaching don’t forget to set aside some time for your tabletop and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Enthralled by the Past

The City of Finchford was a midway point to just about nowhere, and everywhere. Settled on the beginning of a large plain the flat land surrounding the city’s immediate location provided ample room for farming and expansion. However the true wealth of this city lay in the hills beyond the farms, fences and walls.

Gold, silver and even a rich platinum deposit had enticed dwarves to move here years ago. Those dwarves then sold their ore and weapons to the people of the village of Finchford. Soon  a city was born from the prosperity between the two races and there was a time of development and peace. However, it was short lived.

Soon the need arose for a standing guard, an army, to be near Finchford. The local nobility had the grandiose idea to create a kingdom here and so the land became engulfed in war. This war gave birth to an order of knights the land had not seen. The Parn Dragoons were born from this conflict and for many years their power was undisputed.

Finchford

Finchford – Created in nightcafe.

The party gaze at the city of Finchford as they continue their ride towards its large gates. Farmland stretches for miles around the city and the sheer size of it dwarfs many that the party have seen in the past. As they descend the last of the hills and head towards Finchford’s heart the land evens out. However, to the east of the city a few mountains rise and at this distance a large ruin can be seen looking over the surrounding land.

This towering ruin sits like an ancient guardian looking down upon the folk of Finchford, silent and still except for birds flying near the peak of a tower.

Approaching Thrall Keep

The shadow of the Thrall Keep covering Finchford City, the dangers of the woods and then the hike up to the ruins is what lies in wait when the party being approaching thrall keep. This Thursday night brings a few inspirational points to help guide the encounter and adventure. Instead of maps that can restrict imagination let it flow this week. So sit back, grab a coffee and enjoy the inspiration flow below!

Approaching Thrall Keep

320ThApThKe

Approaching Thrall Keep

The decision to approach the keep is one that the party will need to make. To trigger this though the party would need a reason to begin.

“A rumbling came through the floor. At first the party thought it was the dragging of a stool for a bar fight but even the combatants ceased their hostility and waited. Listening. Moving outside Marie was close in front of the party when the great beating of wings could be heard and the silhouette of a large dragon appeared in front of the moonlit clouds. A dragon, as Marie has claimed, had appeared to take up residence in the ruins. However the party felt something was odd in the way it moved, the movements felt disjointed as if the creature wasnโ€™t well. It flew with too infrequent wing beats to keep its large frame aloft.

Yes, something wasnโ€™t right.

Marie bit her thumb and frowned โ€œThatโ€™s no dragon,โ€ she muttered under her breath as the other inhabitants of Finchford appeared in the street and began to flee in panic. โ€œSomethingโ€™s not right here..โ€ she said as she turned to the party

The Forest

Now the approach to the keep lies under a heavily wooded path that leads up towards the keep. I find this is a great spot for an ambush of either diggers pretending to be bandits or creatures of the woods.

Perhaps an encounter with a friendly denizen of the forest who accuses the party of being part of the others who travel the path. Giving clues to what lies at the end of the journey as well as what is going on.

Finchford Woods – created in nightcafe

The Keep

Now I believe the keep should have high parts and lows. Places to hide and sneak through the entire ruins if desired as well as open places for combat. Broken walls could expose higher levels to climb into for an advantage. Uneven ground could give a disadvantage to people fighting across the ruins and even discarded tools and weapons could be hazards.

However the people that current work here, they are the ones to watch out for and the party would need to have a solid plan in dealing with them before engaging the group.
