The Bloodhunt

Tonight and I have created another zine for this weeks adventure, The Bloodhunt. This adventure can be used system agnostic as we explore other RPGs out there other than D&D. So please adjust to what ever creatures you are using in your adventure! However as always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube currently provides the stat-blocks for creatures in this adventure.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, The Bloodhunt. If you like this format please let me know and I hope you enjoy.

“The first gift is hunger.
It is His blessing.
It is our call to bring death.
The second gift is death.
Death proves our strength.
Death purges our fear.
The third gift is fear.
We fear that we will fail him.
We fear the onset of hunger.”

The creatures that serve the dark lords of this existence are foul and atrocious creatures. Giving up their souls for the sake of power, passion or belief. But those creatures created by such beings – oh they are far worse.

Farlock

Farlock – Created in nightcafe.

As the party pass through the large walls that indicate the start of Farlock they gaze around the small walled village. The people here go about their lives seemingly content to live in the sun and amongst the pails suited to livestock and crop growth. The village had a bit of everything that people could expect a village of its size could. A small Inn, a few stores selling general supplies, a blacksmith that primarily deals with equipment and materials for the farmers and a houses.

However what they didn’t expect was a large gathering in the middle of the village as serval coffins were being wheeled out of town. Approaching the gathering the party could hear that they deceased, all young men of the village, were brutally slaughtered just outside the gate only the night before. Apparently the bodies were soo mangled and torn up that they had sealed the coffins to not upset the relatives or the villagers.

When the party asked what happened here everyone shrugged and claimed a wild animal attack, but those who spoke were hastily shushed by another in the crowd.

“They won’t speak about it to outsiders,” a voice said from behind, quietly as the party stood perplexed about the encounter. “They either don’t know or don’t believe what happened. But I can help. If you can help my brother he can tell you exactly what happened to those boys. He knows, he was there. The only survivor of the beast. My name is Salis, my family is village nobility, well we are nobles living in this village. We can pay for your time if you can help?”

Flight from the Bloodhunt

Thursday night brings with it is here and its brought with it a encounter map and a regional map featuring Farlock as the party attempt to take flight from the bloodhunt! A nice simple one this week with versatility being the name of the first map this week. So sit back, grab a coffee and enjoy the maps below!

Flight from the Bloodhunt

Encounter on the Road

Either set up as an ambush for the encroaching enemies or if the party doesn’t escape quickly enough attacks on a guaranteed occurrence. This hilly ambush site next to some trees and bushes for cover makes quick work for the attackers in an early advantage. Remnants of a camp from the fleeing villagers of Farlock can be seen but it’s really the simplistic nature of the map that is its strength.

Road out of Farlock – created in Inkarnate

Players Map of the Rift Villages

Now the map the party gets shows a few towns nearby. Yarnwerth on the way out of the area, Mulbek and Filtburra being nearby. Trees line the roads and they are well worn from years of travel, but beware of what lies in the forest and in the grass next to the road as there are a few beasties to this week’s encounter.

This map is to be provided to the players, but the DM can ‘upgrade it’ with a simple overlay of the in-game effects of the raiding parties that are launching their attack on the area.

Villages around the Rift – Created in Inkarnate

DMs Copy

This shows the buildings being ripped apart and burnt. Walls crumbled and all the towns butchered. However the keep, the destination that the party should travel to (we hope) remains strong. A final bastion of civilization while the bloodhunt is on.

The attacks come from the right and top of the map. Farlock and Mulbek being first. If the party head towards Mulbek after a day they are attacked by the raiders coming from Mulbek down. But a party with keen eyes would see the smoke and should be able to escape.

The Dreamless

Tonight and I have created another zine for this weeks adventure, The Dreamless. Can the party solve who is behind this and burn the disease of impurity from a once devout city or will they let chaos and corruption reign on the streets. Hildebek

Hildebek Town – Created in nightcafe.

The town of Hildebek is a quaint and small town, built upon ancient ruins with the only stone buildings being remade from the remnants of the ancient battlements. The people are peaceful folk who look to make a living from the land as farmers and carers of animals. Despite the town’s current peaceful settlement the previous buildings that resided within this walled land were not so. Lore speaks of a time where the fort that used to reside in Hildebek fell to corruption as the lord was driven mad.

Some say that his madness attracted a fiend, some say that he summoned it himself, both could be true, or untrue. However, whatever the rumours of what summoned the creature from the hells to this fort, its rage and the battle to contain it destroyed the fort. Only a single tower and the walls remained amongst the once imposing compound, the rest was levelled.

Centuries later the town of Hildebek was built upon its ruins. The chunks of stone are the only indicator that there was something more once here. In an effort to protect themselves and maintain history they repaired the walls and tower and the rest was cleared. However, evil never truly sleeps when it is born from such darkness.

Entering Hildebek

Hildebek South Entrance – Created in nightcafe.

As the party enters the city they are greeted by nearly clear streets. The vast quietness and lack of people made it appear like something was wrong – and the moment they approached someone it was evident that something was.ย

The residents of this town were a bunch of half asleep, exhausted people. Several people dozed off mid sentence only to wake up looking terrified. Finally one of the guards, an elf, pointed them towards the Lonely Buck Inn if they wanted to stay the night and noted a few key places in the town if they needed something. The elven man appeared to be fine, although his face was lined with worry instead of exhaustion.

The City of Temptation

Tonight and I have created another zine for… an adventure that was written a few weeks ago. The City of Temptation, Brightkeep, was once a devout city to Helm, now it has fallen into depravity. Can the party solve who is behind this and burn the disease of impurity from a once devout city or will they let chaos and corruption reign on the streets. This adventure can be used system agnostic as we explore other RPGs out there other than D&D. So please adjust to what ever creatures you are using in your adventure! The City of Temptation

316SuTCiOTe

Brightkeep was once the toast of cities for its order, the way its nobility acted in a chivalrous manner as well as its knights. Over the years the knights, the Helms Watchers of Brightkeep have been instrumental in resolving all major conflicts in the region and even, with the aid of their secret order of warrior-spies the Shadows, some conflicts in more distant lands. However there has been a growing rot in the city that once was known for its pious and pristine reputation. Gone are the knights of shining order and justice and the nobles have fallen into a sickening depravity. In fact the city is known now to be a place where people can go to get whatever their dark desires are.

The days in Brightkeep arenโ€™t bright anymore, and the nights are even darker.

Hildebek Town

Well another Thursday night is here and its brought with it a regional map featuring Hildebek Town! Tonight I was inspired by the community on Inkarnate to try out the regional Map style and I had a fair bit of fun working in the near-Isometric map. The one thing I would want is a way to get hills, cliffs and the like more easily accessible. But I will have to dig deeper. So sit back, grab a coffee and enjoy the map below.!

Hildebek Town

318ThHiToMa

Hildebek town is quite small having under a hundred people living there. Two inns populate this town and a variety of shops and merchants that call this place home. Built around the watchtower that used to be a military the tower and walls were mostly repaired. The ruins and rubble from the previous buildings were replaced by houses and people began to move here as a town between two major cities.

Thanks for joining me for a rather short one tonight. I wanted to keep it brief to enable flexibility and to not build much into this map as I plan to use it in the near future. In fact with D&D occurring for me fortnightly now I plan to use this map in the near future for my own party. However whether I throw a devil at them and a sleeping sickness is another question that I will have to wait and answer later.

Tomorrow night the statistics of the devil is revealed and I hope its a worthy adversary for the party. However feel free to adjust the encounter to fit your party. So make sure you come back tomorrow and I hope that you will enjoy this weeks adventure. Lastly, make sure you set aside some time for your own tabletop as the weekend approaches quickly. Dresmandae’s Tower Map

Thursday night is here and tonight I bring the Dresmandae’s Tower Map! The Tower itself is simple, but how its used may be a bit difficult. But, more on that tomorrow for the encounter! So let’s roll onto tonight’s map, the four stories of the varied tower and into tonight’s adventure!

Dresmandae’s Tower Map

317ThDrToMa

The tower of Dresmandae is a bit of a tricky one. Each level of the tower can be flipped horizontally or vertically to have something similar but different. The first floor will stay the same, a open space initial with perhaps bookcases and a chair within. A room on the right, dark due to no windows or candles but able to be filled with beds, tables or what ever we deem fit. A central staircase leading up with a few more rooms and a window in the back open area.

The second level, the top right, is more segmented rooms. Perhaps once rooms for study but now they are for.. different purposes. Something we will check tomorrow night.

The third, bottom left, is the circular room is one of danger. Each circular pillar (coloured in black) has traps within. Moving about this floor to investigate it isn’t safe. Those astute enough will realise its also a mirror image.

The fourth, bottom right is the end scene. This is where the party uncover one of the NPCs, Drake, and learn more about this tower and its purpose. If they can reach there in time. This floor is also completely dark, so I hope your party brought torches as in absence of all light, not even dark vision can pierce this veil.

Dresmandae’s Tower – created in Inkarnate

Thoughts

I hope the tower of Dresmandae is well received as it is a bit of fun. The complicated part comes with how we encounter the rooms and the NPCs on the various floors. However I believe the parties will work it out swiftly and we will be fine.

Thanks for joining me to admire the view from the tower’s different levels. A bit of a mixture of a puzzle and dungeon style encounter this week is brewing. In fact tomorrow night we fill in the missing pieces so don’t forget to come back to investigate what lies in wait. As the weekend approaches again I want to remind you to set aside some time for your tabletop. Continuation and persistence is what this hobby is vulnerable for, so maximise your output! And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Play Room of the Depraved

Welcome to another Thursday night where I want to quickly reveal the play room of the depraved. This week we have an adventure that revolves around finding out the source of the ongoing corruption and depravity before confronting it, two instigators of temptation. Did I mention they are in here two? Well, its sure to be a thrilling adventure. So to reveal what we have planned, let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Play Room of the Depraved

316ThPlRoOTDe

A nice simple room, windows blocked out by wall coverings either side of a large plush couch. Food and alcohol on the centre table define what this room is for and elude to the parties that went on in here. The room has a heady musk of narcotics and a dank smell to it that is intoxicating to the senses.

“Throne Room” – Small – created in Inkarnate

Tempters of Brightkeep

The two tempters of Brightkeep are influencers amongst the lords and ladies of the city. They bring with them unending parties, celebrations and exotic temptations that have swayed even the most devout and rigid.

Their true forms are yet to be revealed, but they seem to take great delight and pleasure in watching the city devolve into depravity.

Temptress of Brightkeep – created in nightcafe

Thoughts

The tempters of Brightkeep are, ready for the reveal, a succubus and an incubus. I think its succubi and incubi but its quite a late night. However, regardless of proper pronouns for these two they are the instigators of temptation and depravity within Brightkeep and we have them in our sights now.

But, even with them being known for what they are and identified as such – will we be able to deal with them?

Thanks for joining me for a glimpse at two more NPCs, the antagonists, in this weeks adventure. Tomorrow night we look at the Statblocks before this weekend we wrap up another adventure. Don’t forget to come back for the last few days as they promise to be full of fun! Also don’t forget to come back this weekend for the end of week writeup and inspiration for your own tabletop. The halfling woman crossed the tent to retrieve a cup of stewed herbs. Inhaling the smells from the potent mixture she breathed out a sigh of contentment, kneeling by the fire to look what the omens had in store for her. As the fire danced across the coals in front of her the herbal tea and smell of the smoke.

Slowly images appeared in the fire in front of her. As normal, for her tribe, a large wolf appeared amongst the fire and images swirled around. The passing of days, three in total, The sun being devoured by the great wolf and the moon replacing it. A burning village, animals running as packs of wolves ran with her tribe as they hunted anything that moved within the land. The halfling dropped the empty cup as the images slowly resided.

The day of the great hunt was approaching and she had much to do in order to protect the tribe.

Berkshire

Berkshire – Created in Nightcafe.studio

The trek into Berkshire was a relatively uneventful one. The animals that had stalked them for days had given up their pursuit but they had been acting more aggressive, more bold than normal wolves, bears and boars.

The town of Berkshire is where the party had been summoned, the promise of wealth and adventure had sounded nearly too good to be true but the governor of this town had apparently built the town up from just a few houses to what it is today.

Houses and farmsteads lay on the outskirts of the town with farmers working the fields. The lack of animals was soon explained by a large pyre of burning livestock carcases that sent a plume of dirty smoke into the air.

It didnโ€™t take them long to find the governor’s building, his office, and after a few moments they were shuffled through the doors and ushered to meet Casey Dae.

Hunting grounds of the Wolf

Welcome to another Thursday night where we look at materials to help flesh out our adventure this week. Tonight we look at the two places that we can consider the hunting grounds of the wolf, the deity of the Wolf Ridge tribespeople. Tonight I really wanted the theatre of the mind to be centre of the stage. Where we look at the potential for combat we can use descriptive language to really enthral our players. But to get to these descriptions we need to first move out of the introduction… So without any more delay, let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Hunting grounds of the Wolf

315ThHuGrOTWo

As the party began to leave the top of Wolf Ridge the sound of growling and whining came from behind. Turning around the partially obscured sun shone brightly in their eyes as they strained to find the source of the noise. A pack of wolves stood next to the tribespeople at the pyre. Each one of them rested their heads on the lap of one of the tribe and whined in a high pitched concerned manner.

As the party watched on, making sure the wolves wouldnโ€™t attack it became easier to see the people and beasts. The sun’s brightness was dwindling as the moon began to cover the fiery orb. A sound of tearing fabric came from the gathered creatures, one of the young boys near the pyre began to convulse as muscles, bones and tissues split, healed and morphed into something more.

The change

A large shock of black fur sprouted from the ripped clothing as the chains and woven ropes grew taught on his swelling frame. A moment later another young one began the same transformation process. However none of the adults were affected. In fact they continued to chant in prayer. The halfling woman, a shaman of some kind looked at the party with sadness and concern. “The change has begun. The warriors you have in Berkshire will remain in their human form for as long as possible but the more distressed they are the shorter the time it will be. You must hurry.”

The party raced back down the hill as the first of the blood chilling howls erupted from the pyre. The young and infirm were beginning to change but those who were devout in faith and belief held strong and controlled their curse.

Wolf Ridge Tents – created in nightcafe.

Berkshire

The screaming from Berkshire could be heard from as far as the open gates. A rushed stream of people leaving the town pushed past the party as they hurried through towards the cages. Something told them they were too late. In fact it was more than just the screaming as the time it took to get back to the town had seen the moon nearly fully eclipse the sun.

โ€œStand firm, hold!โ€ the voice of Luke could be heard from the centre of the town. As the party rushed through the busily clearing streets they came to the sight of a cage nearly full of werewolves. Each wolf was taller than an average man. In fact most of them were as broad as two with the tribespeople being larger than average. However despite the size difference, and monstrous form of the Tribe of the wolf warriors the guard held firm.

Runโ€ฆ

But that is when they heard it. The first of the cage bars breaking, snapping from the fury and might of the lycanthropes. As the cage shattered the beasts stepped out into the moonlight of the Lunar eclipse. โ€œItโ€™s too late. Run for your lives. The wolf has them now, and will have us all on his day of hunting. You shouldโ€™ve left us chained in the cells for only there wouldโ€™ve you been safe!โ€ one of the few human form women said. as she knelt and prayed. โ€œWhen there is no sun left even I wonโ€™t be able to contain myself. Go and save as many as you can. Only the cells will save you now.โ€

Berkshire – created in Inkarnate

Thoughts

This one is a bit of a fun one. A bit of a nightmarish scene as the moon blots out the sun. I personally like the idea describing the fear of the villagers, guards and even the apprehension of what’s about to happen from the lycan’s. Seeing their curse as not just a disease but their deity enacting a great hunt will be a fun twist. I believe that the party members will have to think fast to overcome the situation they will find themselves in this week.

Thanks for joining me for another night at the tabletop. Despite not having any maps for tonight I will still look at creating some for the final product this weekend as they can be a good way to visualise certain battle area’s. In fact sometimes theatre of the mind and having a map for parties to utilise can enrich the adventure that little bit more. So make sure you come back tomorrow night for the creature blocks, there will be werewolves guaranteed.

Don’t forget to come back this weekend for the end of week writeup and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

A Palmful of Luck

This week I wanted to put into practice the five point approach to create a one shot in a short time frame. Despite the map everything was thought up on the Monday night and the short brainstorm produced a Palmful of luck. So instead of creating a full zine for this week I wanted to put down a few summarising points and tie it in with the process. However don’t worry as we will be back to the normal Zine format next week.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks quick-adventure, A Palmful of Luck.

Magical Dice โ€“ Created in nightcafe.studio

To Roll with Fate

The concept of this week really was the question. What if the act of rolling dice is more than just how the players explore this game but also the centre point of the mission. The dice we use can be simply magic in our hands, but what if they were actually magic. The concept of a magical dice that randomly does this can’t be a new one. But I wanted to add a twist that its cursed to be skewed towards the opposite luck of what its bearer has. So the outcome of the dice roll is better if someone is Inheritantly unlucky.

However this can cause trouble for people who are trying to utilise the dice to better themselves and this is where the Who comes into it.

The Gullible and the Gambler

The NPCs that take the stage is someone who believes that they are being swindled by someone with a magical item, a gambler of their own fortune. The other protagonist is someone who believes that they are safe, gullible due to innocence. However, this does not last long and their one lucky break in a long line of misfortune starts to swing to unlucky.

Both Simon and Raff could easily be the ones who approach the party. Raff’s greed and belief that he was swindled due to a lucky, magical trinket could push him to do the unthinkable. However Simons need for acceptance and desire for, what we all want – safety, could push him to reach out to stranger to help. This week we went with Raff’s greed as it opens up more possibilities. This leads us to the Why.

A Business Proposal

Why is normally the key component of bringing the party into the problem of others is our gig as a DM. I believe that by having Raff being our proposer of employment it means that we can have the party understand something for themselves. That is to not believe or trust everyone they encounter.

I believe that all parties will need to learn this at one point. In fact by having the bad guys of the adventures convince the party to do the wrong-doing it should develop not only the characters but also the players. However, it could go wrong if they do bring Simon back to Raff at which point we have a very different adventure on our hands. But in order to come to that conclusion we need to go to Where it all happens.

Though the Streets and the planes

Where, this is what we encounter next.

Another street chase, or simply back-tracking to where Simon was last found. We have a few ways to get the party to the astral plane. Firstly if they find Simon, if we want them to, then they could chase after him and through an active roll of the dice it gets interesting. However, they could simply find the magic dice by the barrels, hidden somewhere (but not for them).

By finding the dice the inherent bad luck causes them to drop it and open a portal to the astral plane. Once there they wake up on a floating island and can explore from there. Finding Simon being chased by a Githyanki Stalker, or, being the next mean for the gibbering mouther. But that’s in our Why the party have to care.

Ambush in the Astral Plane

Why the Githyanki or the Gibbering mouther encounter Simon or the party is the next question to answer. We have a bit of fun with these two stat blocks as they aren’t anything special. In fact I just wanted to have the Githyanki make an appearance. In fact the idea of a gibbering mouther being thrown in there as a plausible cause to why the Githyanki are there.

Thoughts

I want to thank you all for showing up this week to explore the concept of quick adventures in your palm. In fact this isn’t too far from the format that makes me come up with new adventures weekly. I have been DMing for a while, on and off, and by looking and refining my own process I believe it makes me improve my skills. Short, sharp and sweet concepts without lengthy setups or adventure hooks. This is the concept I have every week and despite it taking me about twelve hours to produce the weekly Zines. They are worth it. I think.

If you like this format let me know! Short, sharp and to the point with some notes to understand the reason why is something a bit easier to turn out. However, I do prefer the tangible zine that I produce weekly. I believe that that format will be the constant that I return to but let me know if there is something else. In order for me to grow and produce higher quality work I will push and explore more.

Next week we kick off with something a bit more Grim. With Warhammer also kicking off for me I want an excuse to use some of the miniatures I have. But, painting these ones are keeping me in a world of pain as finding little things to motivate me to paint more is a constant battle. So keep an eye out for more painted miniatures on here. If you like what I produce let me know, feedback is appreciated as I mentioned above it helps me grow.
