Desmodus Market Quarter

Following on from last night the destruction of half an inn and a small temple in the Desmodus Market Quarter we have a map of the scene. Well something that will do at least. While Guard Captain Katiana searches for the culprits there may be something else at play here.

So without waiting any longer let’s sit back, grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s map!

Desmodus Market Quarter

Desmodus Market Quarter – Created in Inkarnate

The destruction isn’t total but it isn’t an easy sight to see. The temple lays in nearly complete ruins with some of the more dangerous walls, and debris having been hauled away already. The streets are more dusty than normal due to the cleaners already being here, for some of the rubble at least. However the danger of this environment is most of the rubble is brittle and will break if not carefully walked upon which could injure those who fall through the initial layer of brittle wood or stone to be stabbed, lacerated or caught in a secondary layer beneath the first. A dangerous place to be engaging in any form of combat.

A few different tones of the same textures were used tonight to gain a bit of depth across the map. roads were created with a transparent dirt texture and then, to make my life easier, a lot of “roof” tiles were added to give the district its shape. The ruins are some great tiles (art assets) that look good when blended together and chaotically put in a rough shape – I think it turned out ok with some room for improvement.

Thanks for joining me tonight with another map created. Don’t forget that as I continue this week I gear up for another Zine at the end of the week. So don’t forget to come back daily to stay on top of what’s happening here and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Desmodus at Dawn

There are not many sights that would warm the city guard in the city than the sight of Desmodus at Dawn. That is unless part of your city has crumbled away in the middle of the night. As adding the players perspective would make this weeks adventure perhaps too easy I will continue from the lens of Katiana.

So let’s wake up, grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s adventure!

Desmodus at Dawn

As the first rays of dawn struck through the curtails Katiana looked up from the paperwork on the small desk she had in her room and sighed. As she reached over and snuffed the candles she was using to read the reports of what they had found out about the musicians during the day. She stretched her back causing a few pops to echo out as she moved towards the window to view Desmodus at Dawn.

After a moment to get her eyes to adjust to the light before she gazed upon the tapestry of rooftops. The reds, browns, greens and greys of the tiles and wood. The flags of the city whipped about in the breeze and the sounds of the city coming alive rose to greet her. However as she looked across the city that she had spent most of her life in she noticed something concerning.

Grabbing her jacket she moved towards the door, hauling on her boots as she hopped out of the door. Moving through the city quickly head towards the merchants quarter. As she neared the quarter the first cries of alarm could be heard. A group of guards were hurrying in that district and she rushed to join them. “Katiana, there has been another incident.” one of the guards said as they saw her, another captain from another part of the city watch.

“I didn’t see the tower of Selune so I had to come investigate.” she replied.

“The tower collapsed onto the Mullberry Inn.” the captain answered her question. Katiana followed along and started to help where she could. It wasn’t until she reached the site of the fallen tower that she began to understand. The Inn was ruined with splintered timber littering the road. As she stepped around the material she found her foot passing through the material as if it had been feasted on by insects.

The stone of the tower was much the same as the inn. Half of it was frail and brittle and although the building was destroyed the loss of human life seemed to be minimal. “Well the music stopped and slowly we felt the building rumbling. We ran out to the streets, all of us, in time to see the temple collapse onto the inn. I don’t think the group of bards that were playing made it out though.” one of the people on the streets murmured as she recounted the night before.

Thanks for joining me tonight to for a short continuation of the journey this week. Don’t forget that we will expand the adventure each day this week as we move onwards this week. Don’t forge to come back each day this week and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Kat and Mouse

With the destruction of what remained of old temple within Desmodus City the city guard captain, Katiana, has made it clear that she will hunt down those responsible. This game of Kat and Mouse, if you will, will only end in one way in her books. Her finding the bards and dispensing justice in how she sees fit.

So let’s crack down, suit up and march into tonight’s adventure!

Kat stormed down through the guard hall as she left one of the apprehended revellers to leave the room she had been questioning them in. She had expected finding the band to be difficult giving the nature of the reports that she had heard, but not this difficult. As she marched towards the benches where several other witnesses stood she stopped abruptly in front of one of her lieutenants who was hurriedly searching through a ring of keys.

“Sal, I wanted those rooms cleaned out for when we catch them. What’s taking you so long?” she snarled at the man. He had been caught dancing amongst the crowd despite knowing that the temple was out of bounds for good reason.

“Sorry Captain, I brought in the other witnesses like you requested and organised them on the bench. That took me most of the morning so I am getting around to clearing out the cells now.” he replied, flustered, knowing that his excuse of ‘wasn’t in control of his own body’ wasn’t working any more.

“You have until tomorrow morning, or we start arresting people, which ever comes sooner.” she murmured as she strode to get the next witness in line. A half-elven man sat in front of her in a smart but worn tunic.

Jayce Stonecliff – Created in Nightcafe.

“You, if you could come with me please I have some questions to ask.” she began, her usual direct and blunt nature tempered a bit as he smiled at her.

“No worries, anything I can do to help protect this city” he replied as he stood.

As she walked off with the man following her he looked through the notes that had been jotted down about him. “Jayce Stonecliff. You’re a local?” she asked noting that it wasn’t listed down or not.

“No, unfortunately, I am originally from Entied but have been in Desmodus for a few weeks now. Glad to be out of the city after what happened a few weeks back, lost a few friends in the collapse of the keep.” he smiled weakly.

“Well hopefully you can help with stopping that from happening here.” she said as she opened a door to a lightly furnished cell and followed after him. “Now you said that you were in the area when you heard the commotion. What else can you tell me about it?” she began.

“Well I heard the music, the vibrations were shaking the ground so I wanted to make sure that we weren’t going to have the same trouble as what happened in Entied. But when I got close the music was waning and I saw a group of children running out from the back of the temple and towards the merchants district. I thought nothing of it until the crowd came rushing out and the ruins started to fall.” he replied as he sat down on a stool and looked up at Kat.

She wrote down his reply and took a moment too long before realising what he said. “Wait you said you saw children. Can you describe them?” she probed.

“Well they all had carried bags or something as they moved away. I assumed that they were up to no good. One of them carried something long and wrapped in cloth…” he mused.

“Like a lute?” Kat asked taking more notes. “Could these children have been gnomes or halflings?” she asked again a spur of thought taking her deeper.

“Oh. I hadn’t thought of that. That would make sense. Wait you don’t think that they were the musicians?” he asked a look of shock on his face.

“Hmmm,” she replied as she tapped the feathered end of the quill on her lip. “Thanks for the information Mr Stonecliff,” she began.

“Jayce. Jayce will do.” he smiled back at her.

“Ok, yes. Mr Jayce. If I need to verify anything more where can I find you? To help with the case of course.” she added hurriedly.

“I am staying the Mullberry Inn at the moment. I was hoping to find a place to stay more permanently but I am afraid that Desmodus may end up like Entied so I was thinking about leaving.”

“No don’t!” she snapped. “I mean don’t leave in case we need help identifying people. We will be in touch.” she added as she opened the cell door and he strode out in front of him. “Thanks for your assistance Jayce. I believe we may have a way forward in protecting this city now.”

“No worries Captain Katiana.” he replied as he walked off. It wasn’t until he was out the door and onto the streets that Kat wondered if she had actually given the rakish young man her name.

A charming man, a driven captain and a game of Kat and Mouse at foot this week. We will continue to twist and develop this tale as we move on this week so don’t forget to come back daily to stay up to date. And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Desmodus City

Desmodus City is a grand and steeped in history as the centrepiece of a large kingdom. However when something threatens its safety the city guard, the dark shields, will rush to defend it at all costs. But what threatens them the most this time is something that brings the people of the city joy and comfort – music.

So grab a coffee and let’s dance into tonight’s adventure!

While the city still reels from the disturbing news of a neighbouring city being destroyed overnight the city becomes host to a travelling bard troupe whose music delights and enthrals the general public. But while their appearance delights most of the people of Desmodus the band of bards isn’t keen on following rules.

While the bards bring music to the ruins of a temple at the outskirts of the city the guards become suspicious of the power of this music and the way that the general public of the city react to them.

Desmodus City

Desmodus ruins – created in Nightcafe.

The guards swarm through the crowd trying to find the bards responsible for breaking the rules of not entering the ruined temple grounds. While the commoners, merchants, mercenaries and a few embarrassed guards dance to the music that is magically enhanced through the broken stone walls surrounding the temple. Rubble litters the ground and as the music thrums through the air small chunks of debris fall amongst the party goers – but the rubble falls to the ground, missing those dancing to the music as the magic resonates from the band.

The music starts to fade and the guards, the Desmodus knights, know that they are too late as the bards disappear from their stone stage. The revellers slowly stop dancing and cheering as the music fades and slowly, and joyously, they march from the temple grounds and follow the directions of the guards. As the guards start to question them they all report the same thing, they were not aware where they were going only that their bodies moved to the music and they felt such contentment that they had not felt in a long time.

However as the last of the attendants of the party left the ruins and only a few guards scouted the ruins chunks of the temple started to shift. Slowly the tall pillars, the platforms and some walls started to give way and the guards had to cease their search as the temple started to collapse onto itself.

By the morning the ruined temple was a pile of rock and debris and not a single wall stood. The stone was brittle and crumbled when touched which concerned the head of the watch. The same report had come in from the investigations of Entied, the neighbouring city, where the ruins of what remained of the city crumbled like dust when touched.

A call went out to the bards to hand themselves in and cease their performances until given approval to do so and failing to do so would be seen as treason. A second call went out to people who could capture the guards, turn them into the authorities and in doing so, they would be generously rewarded by the city guard and the mayor.

The Caverns of Lithia

This week I continued with the creating a shortened Zine, something that fits on a single A4 sheet of paper with just enough information to set the scene, plot and hook with some NPCs sprinkled through that it could be used in any system.

I think it worked out well so without any further waiting I present, The Caverns of Lithia, in the short format, as a fun one-shot to assist GMs when they need a night out of the books whether you run pathfinder, Open Legends RPG, D&D or any other RPG System.

There is references to the blog nights which are D&D centric (regarding Friday night’s Stat-blocks) but this adventure can be used system agnostic more so than my regular Zines. As always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for many of my D&D creatures.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, The Caverns of Lithia, and that your rolls are made with advantage.

After the final death throes of the monstrous spider the lights that shimmered at the end of the hallway caught the parties attention once more as the light sparkled on the wall. As they crept up the hallway and looked for the source of the light a magnificent cavern that glowed from crystals that burned with an inner light was before them. On the ground in small piles was mounds of gemstones, gold coins and other treasure that was heaped near rocky outcrops. However they also spied several creatures crawling across the walls, ceiling and walking along the floor as they dragged creatures wrapped in spider webs to a large central pillar; altar in which something was to feast upon. Several creatures looked up towards the hallway and started to move towards where the party was hidden amongst the rocky outlines of the wall.

Distortions in Time

There are many times a year that I dream of a campaign that blends both sci-fi worlds and medieval settings into a single wonderful campaign. This distortions in time setting campaign is something that always tweaks my imagination and brings me no small amount of joy when imagining the setting, characters and possibilities. Tonight I want to cover it, an opening scene into this world so that maybe others can work out what I have not been able to get onto the table as such.

So let’s sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Distortions in Time

429SaDiTi

Time Distortion – Created in Nightcafe.

The moment Tai stepped onto the street, closing the wooden door behind him the familiar sounds of the city reached out to him. The call of the merchants hawking their wares from the stalls by the side of the road, the march of armoured boots and radio chatter and the buzz of drones flying overhead, buying what the merchants had to offer.

Tucking his pouch containing the gold pieces he would need to today into his leather jerkin he hurried off into the still-dark streets. It would be dawn soon and the streets would become more active as people started to ferry their wares around the River district. Large draft horses would hall parts that had been transported down river by barge onto the back of the large wagons, their greased up axels groaning in complaint as they were hauled off to which ever workshop or engineer needed the heavy parts.

Since the distortion rift had opened up the city had evolved rapidly and many rushed to embrace the newest feats of engineering and science, or so his grandfather had told him. But there were still many that looked at the new technology with apprehension and they put their trust in the ways the city had done business for years. Animals, skilled artisans and man power is what kept the Aetho Empire moving forward, not the buildings made of man-made stone, glass and steel. Nor the guns that most of the city guard patrolled the streets with. Many still carried swords, spears and the like as there was no telling when another distortion would occur.

The trickle of technology was only as frequent as the shimmering portals that would remain open. So anything that was finite just simply was rare, exotic and only occasionally used. This meant that many people had access to these new weapons, guns, but the ammunition for such weapons was rare, so rare in fact that many military units didn’t have ammunition for the weapons they carried and so they were resorting back to tried and trusted bows and blades.

As Tai looked for the merchant he sought out he passed the many different vendors along River road; the commerce road that made its way along the river from east to west. Everything from new technology, to smiths products to food stuffs could be found and anything else in between. but Tai was looking for something specific, something rare that would help him and his party when they head to the north, into the Burgato woods.

“Excuse me sir, fine morning for trading,” he said as he spied what he hoped would be a merchant that would have what he sought. “I’m looking for something for my grandfather as its his birthday you see. I was wondering if you had a certain bit of technological scrap.”

The greying man smiled, a glint in his eye. “Well ye’ve come to the right place. What are you after? we have ancient gadgets and gizmos.” he said pointing at the broken watches, engine parts, capacitors and the like. All junk that would take a skilled hand to get working again. Tai looked over it until he saw what he was searching for. Not looking to be too excited he picked up the torch and gave it a small shake, trying the button. “My grandfather told me about these. He said he had one when he was in the guard.” he murmured taking in the gadget.

“Ah you have a good eye. Much better than a lantern for the older folk. For five gold pieces you can have it to make your grandfather happy.” the merchant said. Tai looked at the torch examining it. The bulb, glass lens and most of it was broken. Noticing that Tai was becoming aware of the state of the torch. “Now I probably have a spare bulb around here somewhere. Just hold a minute.”

Unscrewing the end the batteries fell out. Exactly what he was after. “I’ll give you five silver for the batteries.” he replied holding out the coins and pointing at them.

“No, too cheap for fine working batteries. Three Gold pieces for them. Let me find the bulb and you can have it all for five.” the merchant replied as he started digging through a bag of scraps. Tai noticed that there was a small motor with two cables so it could be connected to power nearby and touched the batteries to the cable. When the motor barely whirred he sighed loudly.

“These batteries are dead. They wouldn’t work with a new bulb even if you found one.” he gestured to the man. “I best be off there are several other merchants would would have these.” he said as he went to put them back.

“Wait. Five silver for the batteries. Your grandfather will get some use out of them yet!” he smiled. “what do you say? Make your pop proud?”

“Three silver.” Tai replied as he turned and looked back at the merchant.

“No, five, that’s what they are worth for sentimental value for your grandfather alone surely.”

Tai smiled as placed the batteries back in the merchants hand and started to walk away.

“Wait. Four silvers.” he said.

“Four silvers and I get that motor.” Tai retorted.

“Deal”

Walking down the street Tai looked at the batteries as he stuffed the motor into his pouch. Channelling the small amount of magic he had he created a pulse of electricity between his fingers and directed the lightning slowly and steadily through the batteries as he walked home. Entering to his single room flat he grabbed the motor and tested the batteries he had been directing electricity into, the Motor whirred to life.

Satisfied Tai went to the chest at the end of his bed and brought out his adventuring pack.

Retrieving the torch he had reconstructed over the years from his bag he unscrewed the cap and placed the batteries within. Tightening it up he clicked the button and marvelled as the room flooded with light. This would make the job his party had taken a lot easier, at least until the next series of Distortions in Time when they would get fresh technology into his world.

Midfern Keep Vault

Midfern Keep Vault – the place where treasure and wealth that many could only dream of has been uncovered. However it’s also a place of great danger and mystery. This week we investigate it and what lies in wait for those whose greed will get the best of them.

So let’s sit back, grab a coffee and roll into map!

Midfern Keep Vault

429ThMiKeVa

Midfern Vault Map – Created in Inkarnate

A few ruined pillars dot the room and dirt has come to hide most of the stone work that made up the base of the keep. The vault itself is a large, reinforced elven door that has become overgrown with vegetation that has crept in from the cliff face in which it was built into. Two large what appears to be golden statues guard the vault door and stare menacingly at any who approach it.

Multiple layered textures create this map, as usual, with some of the asset packs also being lightly transparent. Controlling opacity in these maps can create depth and add something a bit more of a softer appearance that I believe really lends itself to the immersion of the map. Different rocks (and the new art packs from Inkarnate – soo good!) created the rocky wall with some runes carved into it (for added magical protection) which I believe helps sell the feel of the map.

Thanks for joining me tonight with another map created. Don’t forget that as I continue this week I gear up for another Zine at the end of the week. So don’t forget to come back daily to stay on top of what’s happening here and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Midfern Vault

The Midfern Vault, the centralised gate built into the mountain past the first few guarded, trapped, locked and magically sealed doors the final door to the vault was revealed. It was just a matter of time until it was also breached and then the real treasure could be revealed.

So let’s grab a coffee, ready ourselves and roll into tonight’s adventure!

Midfern Vault

At last the door was revealed. A beam of sunlight from a broken part of the roof revealed the rubble, plants and growth that has set into the rune covered door. The journey to the central Vault door had been dangerous one with several traps; mundane and magical, having been built into the locking mechanism of several rooms which had seen them lose some of the less experienced would be adventurers who had heard the call to fame.

But those that remained stood ready and tested, the final hurdle in front of them

Midfern Vault – Created in Nightcafe

Marcell stood with Carben talking to the other hired help nearby, ready as always, as she read the runes from a distance. She was certain this was the door as no other door had been so heavily protected which made her giddy with excitement. This had to be it, where the elves of the Midfern keep had kept their knowledge of ancient magic and had stored it. There was no other explanation in her mind why it would be guarded as so – unless it was for gold and other wealth.

“I don’t like this.” Carben said next to her as he came back to stand closer by her side. “They are good people, mostly, and they seem to believe that the murals we found earlier in the ruins talk about this door. That the great evil that they defeated was sealed back here.” Carben said in a rushed whisper.

“Don’t be a fool. The elves only put that there to stop people from taking the secrets of their spells and their gold. From what I’ve read the ‘Great Darkness’ was a roving band of orcs that they killed out and then they took that as a sign to seal their strongest weapons, and greatest riches away. The story of the great evil is a myth, a legend that was created to stop people from doing what we are going to. Get our hands on the most powerful magic we have seen and get rich in doing so.” Marcell retorted as she stormed off toward the door. She had come this far that turning back now was simply being foolish.

Thanks for joining me tonight to continue on with the journey. I believe what comes next is pretty self-evident but we will have to wait and see what we have brewing over the next few days before we jump to any conclusions. Mercell and the Mercenary

This week we have Mercell and the Mercenary that are behind the discovery of Midfern Keep as our primary NPCs. However there could be dozens more as this week is about the mingling of hundreds of people to find out the secrets of the ruins before the fame, and fortune, are all grabbed up by the others.

So let’s grab our explorers kits, double check our rope and stroll into tonight’s adventure!

Mercell and the Mercenary

Mercell – Created in Nightcafe.

Mercell watched as people the hired help moved the last of the rubble from one of the outer buildings they had first discovered. As the people gathered across from her celebrated in clearing out another room she flicked through her notes once more. Retrieving the stick of charcoal from her sleeve she scratched out a sketch of what the remains of the building looked like now that she had a better view, and that centuries of plants had been removed.

“Marcell. We believe we have found it.” Carben, her original mercenary gruffly said from near her. She looked to where he had come from and confirmed it was as she had suspected.

Carben – Created in Nightcafe.

“So you’ve found it. Is the path…” she began

“Sealed, as you suspected Marcell.” Carben added for her.

Marcell nodded and thought as to what the next steps would be. She had worked with Carben for years now and the old mercenary had always proven to be annoyingly correct with his intuition. “We will need more people present if its as you suspect, the seal holds most of the lost treasure and the lore that you seek. But if that seal also binds the creature.” he paused eying his employer wearily.

“Yes. Yes, of course you’re right. Send word to the nearest three villages and cities to announce that Midfern keep has been found. We will get the man power behind us to open the door and, with any luck we will have enough strength to fight back the darkness for long enough so we can get what we came here for.”

That’s all for tonight! A bit of a shorter one for tonight but there is more coming up this week. So don’t forget to come back each night as we continue to grow this adventure and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Midfern Keep

The trek to promised journey was a long and tiring but the message that came created a sense of urgency that had not been felt in quite some time. Midfern keep had been found again, the lost ancient keep that was sealed away to prevent a great evil from surfacing.

So grab a coffee and let’s dive into tonight’s adventure!

When the first of the elven forts fell to a dark power Midfern keep became the last bastion of defence against the rising dark power. But the conclusion of the elfโ€™s ritual saw the bastion fall from knowledge, buried like the evil it dragged kicking and screaming into silence.

The fort has been found once more and scholars, adventurers and merchants all rush towards the building as the promise of treasure sways all. But their green will cause the downfall as the deeper they push the more they discover and unwillingly unravel. Now caught between a rock and a hard place the party must make a choice, stand against the darkness and try to reseal what was awoken. Or, flee and pray that the darkness doesnโ€™t try and snuff out the light once more.

โ€œMidfern keep has been found,โ€ the messenger at the tavern called out as she stood in the door. There was nearly no one who did not remember the stories of Midfern keep or the treasures that had been abandoned in the forts halls when it fell into silence. โ€œWe are seeking aid, scholars, warriors, scouts, everyone. We have secured the outer buildings but only the inner rooms of the fort remain yet to be breached.โ€ the young girl read from a scroll now.

โ€œFame and fortune to all who come and aid the Scholars of Thombridge as they start to open the keep up by the night of the full moon,โ€ she paused and looked up. โ€œItโ€™s two days away from here so I will take whoever wants to answer to the call to fame and legend.โ€ She finished her speech and hurried to the bar to get a hot meal and drink.

โ€œThey say that the elves sealed their treasure in the fort,โ€ one of the patrons said from nearby, whispering to his companions. โ€œA treasure horde fit for a king!โ€ he excitedly proclaimed before being shushed by the others on his table.

โ€œThe elves sealed a darkness in that keep. I heard that anyone who enters the fort is cursed and dies within a week. Thatโ€™s why no one has ever reportedly found it before.โ€ another said near the messenger, who looked up shocked and ate with a look of worry and concern on her face. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t goโ€ฆ But, if it was to give my kids a better life and get the name Pemberbrok in legends then I might as well sign upโ€ the woman said as she sculled from a tankard.

The next morning found the party standing out front of the inn with horses ready, but they were not alone. Dozens of other adventurers, explorers, scholars and even commoners stood near them with possessions packed and ready to go. A man stood nearby counting coins as several people had bought a wagon and draft horses from him for a sum that would be several years worth of wages for most people.

The messenger appeared in riding gear, clad in light leathers and as she looked across those gathered she nodded and moved to retrieve her horse from the Inns stable hand. “Well this looks like a mighty crew. We rest at dusk, rise at dawn and will be there by tomorrow night if we are lucky.”
