Messenger of the Gesig horde

The Messenger of the Gesig horde, the Notyrep used to be twisted creature with large fleshy bat-like wings that carried these hideous mixture of hyena, bat and vulture. Since the entire population of them was created in the Gesig horde these have likely never been seen, perhaps only ever heard of.

So let’s sit down, grab a coffee as we roll into tonight’s encounter!

Messenger of the Gesig horde

The Notyrep is a horrible abomination of fleshy muscle, tufts of fur and feathers that serve no purpose other than to hint at what the creature could be a composite of. Fast on foot it uses its clawed hand on its grip into the ground, wall or building as it rushed forward. While it may be fast on the ground its faster in the air using its large wings to propel it forward and it’s in the wait where its most lethal.

Using its jaws it tries to rip out chunks of its prey while its talons rake at them while flying past. Nimble and powerful it takes a little bit to take one out and it is adept at hunting those that try to avoid it with its keen sense of smell and sight.

A small update tonight as the other creatures would be rather mundane in comparison. Don’t forget to come back this weekend as we continue this adventure and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Karaol Night Market

This week I wanted to have a epic fight scene in the Karaol night market however, I really dislike making maps in cities. Cities with the people, the stalls, buildings, animals and other flexible obstacles deserve something more than a static map and so I prefer to run these old school, theatre of the mind.

So sit back, grab a coffee, maybe some snacks from the night market and let’s stroll into tonight’s encounter!

Karaol Night Market

Karaol Night Market – Created in Nightcafe.

The air is enriched with the scent of local spices and cooking delicacies which mingle with the aroma of the herbs and vegetables from nearby produce stalls. Bright lanterns shed warm light across the stalls which sway lightly in the cool evening breeze from woven died strings of a multitude of colours.

Deeper into the market the spices and food gives way to sellers proclaiming that their enchanted trinkets or magical potions will create a variety of magical protections, cures or blessings. However, only a few will actually work. A small group of buskers sing, dance and even play a lute as they weave a tapestry of sound and melody that enriches the chatter between merchants and customers.

The shadows in the alleyways and on rooftops speak of a darker aspect to the market as all kinds of people are drawn to the promise of coin, or clients who wish to partake in less reputable activities. However a darker set of shadows prey upon even those who prefer the dark alleys as the Prison of Gesig’s seals fray further closer to oblivion. As people slowly realise that something dark flies above them the panic sets in and stalls turn into shelters or places to hide, some are over turned in the panic to escape the maze of tents, sounds and smells.

The tents, people and wares give an interesting layer of complexity with this weeks encounter. Able to climb buildings, some tents and other structures such as barrels, crates tables and even a wagon markets inside cities offer a great variety of places to run through.

The fabric of tents if crashed into can stop a deadly fall, but they can also capture and ensnare weapons, claws or wings if not careful. Able to disarm, delay or even restrain a potential foe could prove invaluable if used correctly and at the right moment.

Thanks for joining me for another night where we drifted back towards theatre of the mind! Don’t forget to join me again tomorrow for the encounter for this week and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Karaol at Night

A city like Karaol at night is a place to see. Bustling streets filled with people attending night markets, people enjoying (perhaps a bit too much) their libations and engaging in merriment and, of course, the screech of demons as they chase a failing artefact through the city streets towards the church of Selune. Ah what a place to spend a few days in.

So let’s grab a coffee, put on our finest tunics and let’s go for a night stroll!

Karaol at Night

The party marvelled at how many people were just walking down the street despite the large demonic shapes that crawled, leapt of flew between the rooftops as they watched and chased the party through the streets. They had only discovered the location of the bag after hearing Naye, the stablemasters daughter shriek out in shock and fear as a demon started attacking the pile of bags and kit that they had taken from the horses the party had intended to take out.

A mix-up. The saddlebag from their horses had been mixed up with Fylaine’s quarry, the Prison of Gesig. However the church to Selune was on the other side of the city and despite Fylaine’s help in fighting off demons that were nearly spilling out freely they had lost her a few streets back when something bigger than a Quasit appeared and attacked them. It was not long until similar creatures were appearing and attacking them relentlessly.

Large bat-winged creatures with scaled heads, bulging muscles and an odour that invoked nausea jumped down from stalking them along the rooftops before stamping their hooved feed defiantly. The variety of demons that kept appearing really told a unfavourable picture of what lay within the prison itself. The demons were no match for the party and after a few strikes in less than a minute of heated combat the creatures were left dead on the floor. However it was a minute that they had been delayed and the seal weakened now with every moment after it was attacked by the creature in stables.

Rushing onwards the sounds of beating wings finally met with the patron’s of the taverns, bars and inns on the ground and a panic erupted with many people fleeing inside the buildings, many more however flooded the streets in their panic. This unfortunately accomplished two things. One it created a moment where the party could slip along with the horde of people fleeing down the street and, second, it created more prey for the demons that started to swoop down and snatch at the commoners, merchants and revellers of the night life in Karaol.

Thanks for joining me for yet another night. Don’t forget that I continue to expand this adventure further every night this week and we still have a few nights left. So don’t forget to come back each night and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Fylaine Hellkeeper

The paladin known as the Hellkeeper is acually called Fylaine, Fylaine Hellkeeper to give her name and title. Half-drow and left in ‘care’ of the Church of Selune she showed a unusual dedication to the goddess of the moon.

Let’s slow down a bit for this week. Grab a coffee, sit down and listen to the tale that Fylaine wrote!

As the sound of her plate boots echoes down the streets as she walked away from the Church of Gond with the Bag that she was entrusted with reaching its destination of her home, the Church of Selune in Karaol. The Prison of Gesig, a master crafted artefact that held an entire legion of demons. The bag had suffered significant enough damage that only the master crafters and those in service to Gond, one of the deities who had a hand in its forging, could repair it.

However, they could repair the physical bag but the seal on the prison itself, the enchantment that held the demons within was failing and she had to carry it to the clerics that could seal it. As she moved towards her steed, Fillsmir, she felt a vibration from the bag. Pausing she placed a hand on the great sword that was hung between her shoulders and looked around.

There was not a soul in sight this late at night, all the better to be transporting such a foreboding and cursed item out of the city without a audience. But something moved out there, darting across the stone-studded dirt street as it rushed towards her. Drawing her blade and slashing in a low arc she thought she caught a glimpse of the creature before it leapt over her blade and disappeared again. A demon, a trivial nuisance in this case but it was intent on getting to the bag.

If she did not take care of it now it would hound her, delay her and potentially even reach its goal. Calling upon her deities blessings she extended her holy senses and felt the presence of the fiend. Darting forward she slashed once more, this time the blade bit through the creature and a leather wing landed on the round with a splatter of gore. A quasit, she knew it. A weak demon but this one seemed to have a goal, a fixation on the bag she carried. If thrummed as if inviting the creature to take it and Fylaine had to step back to a more defensive position.

It came again, this time shifting its form as it moved, something smaller scurried up her armour and landed on the bag, attempting to bite through the straps. A mailed fist is what greeted it and a large, misshapen spider with missing legs fell to the ground. A final thrust downward felled the creature and a small prayer to Selune saw its corpse, and the separated wing, burn into nothing.

“It seems the seal really is failing fast…” she mused as he flicked the remaining gore from the blade. As she moved once more towards Fillsmir she increased her pace and kept a hand near the short sword at her hip in case something else attacked while she as in more confined spaces.

Thanks for joining me tonight to get a glimpse of Fylaine and what led us to this adventure. Don’t forget to come back each day this week as I ramp up the content and get the adventure ready for our parties to be hunting for the missing luggage. Missing Luggage

This week we have missing luggage causing a fuss in the city of Karaol. However this is no ordinary missing suitcase of a noblewoman’s fine clothes this luggage, a bag in question, is a prison for a demonic army and the seals are wearing thin. It starts off as any normal adventure would, a tavern, a quest and a urgent plea for help from a trusted peer.

Well don’t just sit there, grab a coffee to go, scoop up your bed rolls and let’s rush off to find this bag!

Theft in the city of Karaol has the party searching for the thieves responsible for stealing another adventurer’s bag, the contents of the bag? A prison to a legion of demons. The party needs to find the saddlebag and return it to their fellow adventurer before it’s too late.

However the thief is not someone they would expect, it is likely the last person they would expect and they have unknowingly taken the bag. Will the party locate the bag of imprisonment before the bag’s content spills forth and destroys Karaol.

The party waved farewell to Bruce, the half-orc tavern keeper who always had a room for them in Karoal as they left towards to the stables to retrieve the horses they would need for their journey. Birds sang out above them as they made good time down the streets, they were well known by now by the people in the city their good deeds having spread out far and wide by now.

As they approached Tudric, the stablemaster he waved them over to several fine horses. “Ah my friends, good morning. I had a feeling that you would be joining me early today so I have fed and watered the horses that you requested. I have all your saddlebags ready to go and on the horses with a feed back each to ensure good travel and healthy beasts.” he smiled and clasped their hands firmly. “It’s the least I could do after you rescued my daughter all those months ago.” he added referring to a previous adventure they had taken.

As they checked over their horses, and moving some saddlebags around to ensure they were grouped correctly, they started to head towards the city gate after paying and bidding farewell to Tudric and his daughter. As they neared the gate out of the city the sound of thundering hoofbeats caught up to them. It was Bruce, from the tavern. “Thank the gods that I caught up with you. Fylaine has called for aid, she is missing an artefact and believes its been stolen. If you can spare a day or two to help find out the guild and church won’t forget your assistance.” he blurted out before breathing hard.

Upon returning to the Tavern, the Three Fingered Drake Fylaine, a famous paladin from both the church and the major adventuring guild, was present. “Thank you for coming back to my aid.” she began looking worried. “I am missing the Prison of Gesig, a modified bag of holding that I was transporting to the church of Selune to complete the re-sealing rites.” she looked around the room ensuring that the tavern was empty.

“It’s a prison, one that holds a small legion of demons that was trapped in an ageless slumber several centuries ago. When I went to check that the bag was still where I left it I found that the bag had been replaced. It looks like a normal leather bag but its clasp is that of a brown bear.” she stopped to look from one to the other. “I have asked the guards to check the bags of those leaving the city since early this morning and when Bruce told me you were on your way out on a quest I wondered if I could broker your aid to search for the bag.”

“It’s extremely valuable to the wrong people and in the right peoples hands it would’ve been re-sealed and dormant for the next few years. However, the seal only has a week at best left before its fully broken. A quasit broke out of the bag on the way to Karoal and I suspect that it was lucky to shake off he charms that are present on the bag. Will you help me find the prison before we have a legion of demons loose in the city? The church is aware and are searching for it bug, they can only tell that its in the city and have not been able to pin-point its location yet.”

Thanks for joining me again for another week of adventure. Number 37 this week and it’s going to be a change of pace where its not quite as it seems. So to find out more and keep up to date don’t forget to come back each night this week and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Stained City

This week I continued with the creating a shortened Zine, something that fits on a single A4 sheet of paper with just enough information to set the scene, plot and hook with some NPCs sprinkled through that it could be used in any system.

I think its still working well so without any further waiting I present The Stained City, in the short format, as a fun one-shot to assist GMs when they need a night out of the books whether you run Pathfinder, Open Legends RPG, D&D or any other RPG System.

There is references to the blog nights which are D&D centric (regarding Friday night’s Stat-blocks) but this adventure can be used system agnostic more so than my regular Zines. As always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for many of my D&D creatures.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, The Stained City, and that your rolls are made with advantage.

The Stained city

The Stained City – Created in Nightcafe.

The Red Robin in is a lively establishment at the heart of Olorus, The Stained City. Once a city of honourable nights and proud people, it declined with the departure of the royal family and the rise of the merchant elite who assumed control over the city. After which their focus on commerce and pushing the city forwards to gain more renown, wealth and power caused rifts to appear in the demographics as the people began to mirror the desire of those in power.ย

With so many people focused on power and wealth, gangs sprung up in the city and started to fight for power on the streets. The blood from these gang wars gave the city its name, The Stained City.ย

The party had been to the Red Robin several times before many years ago for various jobs. On this occasion one of their old acquaintances, a man known as โ€œMimsโ€ was drunk and dancing on the table. When he noticed the party he recalled the times they had together fondly and shared his ale with them. However it was not long until he asked them for a favour, and it was a big one.

The party gets to work by watching the local guard to understand their numbers, movement and anything else that they could gain benefit from. They tend to blend in well and no one wants to bother them after they witness a heated dispute with the party as a small number of thieves try to rob them. This earns them a curious nod from the guard, thanks and an introduction to Alistare Guzo, the captain of this part of the city guard. He asked them to keep an eye out for anything suspicious as they had a large number of attempted burglaries lately and they suspected it would continue for another few days, when the local church of Tyr would be removing a particularly cursed item.

The party says farewell to Alistare and hangs back as he meets with a few other guards and strolls off. However they notice a man who is either pretending to be drunk or very much so who watches and follows Alistare and his group for a few blocks before disappearing into an alley.

Wenton Humblewood

Tonight I go back to working on my party of five for Openlegend RPG. Utilising the character creation flow that I started with Ci’ara Stormbringer, Vimbol Forgeblow and then Glendor Woodtusk I give present Wenton Humblewood tonight. Wenton Humblewood’s back story is similar to the others, a troubled past and haunted future but unlike the others he never quite bounced back. Paranoid that he is being hunted he retreated to the woods and there he met his life long companion, a large bat that he called Batty…

So let’s grab some bean water, sit back and meet Wenton Humblewood, the Tormented Tracker.

Wenton Humblewood

Wenton Humblewood – Created in Nightcafe.

Background

A young man by halfling standard, by any man’s standard really, Wenton has had a rough start to his journey. His family and home town was slaughtered by a cult of men who feared that halflings would overthrow the world. It was too late by time the guards of a neighbouring village arrived to defend the halflings and many had been slaughtered.

Wenton had fled. Ashamed at his cowardice and he had run into the woods and never looked back. He heard his mother calling after him “Don’t stop running! Don’t ever stop!” even after she was soo far behind that there was no way her voice could carry the distance. Wenton has never stopped fleeing from the now long-gone tallmen that had killed his village and his people out of fear.

Fear consumed him and in this fear he spent many years in the wilds relying on items he found or stole from others. He became quite adept at using a long hunting bow which he had liberated from his favourite target, hunters. It was one such expedition that he was reminded why he was safer in the woods away from people. They had slaughtered a giant bat, one so large it made horses look small and in a cage near by was a baby, an infant bat who was injured and huddled against the bars.

Whatever caused him to overcome his fear that day is still a mystery to him but he snuck through the camp and freed the bat, and to his amazement, the creature clung onto him even as he sped away from the camp. Tumbling over roots, rocks and down the grass into the deeper forest the creature huddled against him still.

Years later and the mistreatment of the bat, and the lack of solid food from its bat-mother the stunted, yet large, bat had formed a strong bond to Wenton and they often hunted together. That’s how Wenton and Batty met Glendor, Ci’ata and Vimbol as they were investigating claims of a band of thieves in the woods who were giving hunters a hard time.

Abilities

Wenton a complex man, he is an expert at tracking, hunting and going unseen. He also has a way with animals which some say borders on extraordinary.

Banes

  • Charmed
  • Dominated

Boons

  • Concealment

Feats:

Soon after joining the party, a compromise to being executed for stealing for several years, Wenton is never far from his companion Batty. He is otherwise untrackable when he does not want to be found and due to his exposure, and paranoia at being hunted again, he has learnt that the best way to avoid people is to know exactly where they are first.

  • Companion II
  • Master Tracker
  • Untrackable

    Perks and Flaws:

Being alone in the forest for so long and having to survive over what he can find alone has made him a master at scavenging for just the thing he needs. However he has never had to really work with others before so when it comes to finding food he only really has had to look after himself for the longest of time.

    Perks:

    • Scavenger
    • Vagabond

His isolation and extreme fear of being found and butchered like his family and village has left him, socially awkward to say the least. The trauma of his flight from his home village has left some deep wounds and these still haunt him to this day. If it wasn’t for the threat of being executed, cause who would look after Batty then?, he would never have agreed to joining the party

    Flaws:

    • Socially Awkward
    • Psychotic

    Attributes:

Keen senses and even keener agility has kept him alive for years. However, his innate ability to bond with creatures, sooth the mind of beasts and even command them in times of need is something to admire.

    • Fortitude 2
    • Will 3
    • Influence 3
    • Perception 4
    • Agility 5

Thanks for dropping by tonight. Wenton Humblewood (and Batty) is the fourth in a party of 5 that is taking shape for an Open Legends experiment that I am looking at currently. Again I used my process to really hone in on what I want to achieve when creating a character and it continues to work well.

    Avatar of the Storm

The Avatar of the storm, the embodiment of natures wrath and its anger at humanity. Sadly in its wrath it has chosen to seek out the greatest population of civilisation to meet out its judgement against those who stood against nature. However it’s the executioner, not the judge.

So let’s sit down, grab a coffee as we roll into tonight’s encounter!

    Avatar of the Storm

    436FrAvSt

The Avatar of the Storm takes the form of something pure and innocent, normally a large herbivore which has given the power of the storms that surround it. Able to control these storms it can summon down bolts of lightning to strike its foe and if its threatened, it will smash through it with its massive feed. In this case the Avatar of the Storm is a massive deer with lightning that surges through its horns, the fur around its neck and even through its hooves.

The creature is not malicious or evil but its called to the places where humans gather so that the storm it brings can. However the driver of the storm is quite a the opposite and harbours a deep resentment for people and civilisation in general

Avatar of the Storm – created in Tetra-cube

Quite a big creature this week and something that should be difficult to take down. However, as always there is normally more to these encounters that meet the eye and there may be several smaller encounters before we reach the main on this week. Plentura Plain

The area outside the great walled city of Plentura was aptly named, Plentura Plain… yeah not an overly imaginative folk but it does describe the area well. Either the site of battle against a massive creature or, something else, this week it could be a big one.

So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s march into tonight’s encounter!

    Plentura Plain

    436ThPlPl

Plentura Plain – Created in Inkarnate

The plain is riddled with craters where the lightning has struck and churned through the earth. Trees, rocks and bushes are scattered across the field and normally feed and shelter the animals in the plain. The craters are several feet deep enough to provide some cover if people were to hide in there but the soil is loose and getting out of these depressions may be harder than getting in.

This map has four different layers to create the grassy texture for where our players will be marching over. The craters are inverted hills which gives a bit of depth to the battlefield. Several rocks support the chance to have bushes that aren’t out in the open and little sanctuaries for critters or people to hide within.

Most items have some level of transparency to ensure that they blend in well with the background. The rocks tend to sit on top of the field rather than sitting within like they should and so they were a focus tonight.

Thanks for joining me for another more traditional map night tonight. Don’t forget to join me again tomorrow for the encounter for this week and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

    The Storm Beast

As the party watch from a far the true cause of the storms unnatural tenacity is revealed, perhaps. A creature born from the storm, the storm beast, walking steadily against the gale its presence has created as it moves towards Plentura.

So let’s grab a coffee, buckle up and let’s go storm chasing!

    The Storm Beast

    436WeStBe

The Storm beast- created in Nightcafe.

The party watched from the city wall with the other guards as they huddled against the ramparts. The wind was growing to a gale now, causing debris and dust to whip at the exposed skin of those watching the cause of their kings ire.

As they party watched the storm looking for something that would tell them that the could silence the storm, their frustration only grew. The mages of the court had told them that attempts to banish the storm with magic had failed and soldiers had a worse time. Nothing had come up as a way to silence the storm and as it grew closer to the city and its path remained true the likelihood of them failing was rising now.

However, as they watched the storm the lightning that struck the ground did something odd. The blue bolts of lightning hit in a similar spot and the point was travelling in a constant line towards the city. Rushing towards one of the nearby towers where a large telescope was housed. The older elven woman who operated the telescope grumbled as she realigned the great construction within the tower to point where the party had indicated.

Looking through the eye peace it took a few moments before they were able to get the device to focus on the point that they needed it to. There, at the centre of the storm was a giant creature, a deer that buzzed with lightning and was surrounded by a constant shield of wind and debris. Blue lightning moved across its antlers and the fur around its neck as it strode forward. The problem with the creature wasn’t its presence but was also its size as it towered above trees, taller than many giants they had seen.

The party had found a plausible way that they could silence the storm, now they just had to work out how they could achieve it.
