The Spider Pit

Coming from last night’s update, Web of Lies, tonight we get a glimpse of the Spider Pit in which he party will be dealing with the machinations of the lord of the pit. A few floating cocoons hold the prisoners just outside of reach but close enough that those with energy left can still be heard calling for help. But, that can be revealed tomorrow. So let’s grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s map!

The Spider Pit

344ThTSpPi

The Spider Pit is more a large cavern coated in Webs. Some are made by spiders, others by Driders and Ettercaps and something else by something much more foul. The encounter below has the sticky web everywhere which is flammable. So you can burn away the web to provide an area to fight in.

Parts of the map are difficult terrain with dexterity checks to avoid being stuck (if you touch the walls), others are just occasional trip hazards (roll of a 1 on a d6.) The spider webs leading out to the suspended giant cocoons are able to be walked on, and they aren’t sticky. But the fall if you slip or fail a dexterity/acrobatics check is quite far. So the party better watch their step when moving near the edge.

The Spider Pit- Created in Inkarnate

That’s it for us tonight. Tomorrow we have a look at stat blocks, some existing ones as a just in-case, some other underdark creatures and… the giant spiders that attack relentlessly – or they don’t… that’s for the party to find out. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for more content, and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Web of Lies

Welcome back to another night where we look towards web of lies that the party are falling prey to. Or not. You see this week is a bit of concept heavy week where if pulled off well the party will be in awe. But pull it off poorly and it feels like a thinly veiled attempt to stall, hinder or railroad. But let’s assume we can pull it off and it will feel rich and rewarding for all. So let’s sit back, grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s adventure!

Web of Lies

344WeWeOLi

The first of the spiders dropped from the ceiling next to the party had them taken by surprise, for a moment. An arrow through their head caused the body to tumble over the edge and into the pit with a trail of silken thread floating behind. However there were more and soon the realisation of what they had stumbled into made the parties skin crawl.

The cavern itself was covered in web with bulbous cocoons hanging suspended from great webs near the centre. The light that they had with them enabled them to see the walls, a few web-walk ways towards the centre cocoons and some figures moving in the gloom but the sudden appearance of the spiders came with a realisation as well. The whole area was a giant cocoon.

A nest for spiders, the ettercaps and the drow. The captives from the underdark cities and towns were the food for the brood, an insatiable hoard that had taken over this cavern and was reaching further up into the underdark. Each kill the party made sent another large spider over the edge of the ledge they were on and into the depth. But they were without numbers and they were hungry.

The creature sat and watched as the humanoids fought in the tunnels. She analysed their prowess, how they fought and their team work as she sat still on the ceiling and she smiled. She knew that they would work it out eventually. There is no way that there would be that many spiders and her powers only allowed her so much flexibility with the phantasms she could create. But still as a means for tiring our these interlopers it was a useful tool in her arsenal. It also aided in distracting them from the ambushing party that was approaching them from behind.

That right. Illusions, but a smidge better used this time. I think the idea of a big bad (see Lord of The Pit) staying in one place and assessing the party for their prowess is probably the most terrifying. It’s rare we have a creature that would do this to the party and so I think the concept pushes the next two weeks up to being one of my favourites. But there is more, as always, so don’t forget to come back tomorrow for a map and Friday for stat-blocks. And while you’re at it don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Lord of the Pit

Bit of a different one tonight, as I tried to find or create (using AI etc.) something to represent the Lord of the Pit. In the end I had a bit of fun modifying an image in Photoshop to get something that felt just right (as I couldn’t find anything specific that met the brief). So enjoy the writeup and let me know what you think of the image below!

The warmth that the prisoners generated set the cavern below her like a thousand fires. Their energy, the life force that they were generating was what her master needed and why she drove the driders and other abominations onwards to get more captives for the pit.

But as she looked downwards several bright spots of light were coming from one of the tunnels that led from the pit. Her mouth salivated with the power these creatures had but she hesitated. Even with the raids on Duraegis up above the pit she hadn’t seen anyone with this vitality. Nothing had even come close to these creatures that had wandered into her nest. This made her both excited and anxious at what this means. Had these creatures foolishly wandered this close to the Deep Dark or had they come here deliberately and if so, why?

Nothing had escaped the silken prison and the energy that was syphoned into the Pit itself, well that had attracted all manners of foul creatures that her pets had taken care of. But some of the last hunters that had gone out had not returned and some of those who had returned were gravely injured. In fact taking a quick count of those driders that remained she was shocked to realise how many were left. Unfortunately the bindings she had placed on the minds of these creatures, some with greater difficulty, meant that they were unable to inform her of what had happened. But she had more pressing matters to deal with normally.

Maybe these creatures were powerful for a reason and maybe they had sought this place out instead of just stumbling towards it. With the potential threats and opportunities arising in her mind she began to plan, and while she waited high in the ceiling above the cavern of silk the hung motionless.

The inky-black pit, the deep dark, continued to feast as the prisoners were drained of their life force one by one. The driders and Ettercaps feasted on the bodies of the newly dead and tossed what remained deeper into the cavern, for the young to feast so that they could continue their plan, her benefactors’ plan that was.

Thanks for dropping by tonight and for continuing to follow along with the blog. Don’t forget that we still have a few days left of this week as we continue along with this adventure. Tomorrow we will cover the plot hook, a twist (sort of…) so make sure to not forget to come back for that and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Silken Path

Back after our light digression with our Halloween Zine, this week follows on from the adventure that takes place in Kalehgrul. This week our party follow (or are part of) the Silken Path. Captured or following along the Drider raiders the party head deeper towards Duraegis and, the deep Dark. This will be the second last part of this underdark adventure so let’s sit back grab a coffee and let’s roll into this weeks adventure!

The Silken Path

The silken Path – Created in Nightcafe

The driders and ettercaps were not hard to track. The creatures lay great paths of webs as they moved back through the hidden tunnels below Kalehgrul. Their prisoners, the first wave of residents bound in webs and occasionally, feasted upon by the monstrosities that held them captive. The silk itself was strong, light and durable. Those entangled by it would not be able to break out in a hurry and with the venom that the ettercaps injected into the strongest of the prisoners there was no hope of escape.

And in the dark tunnels where no light could be seen from even glowing mushrooms or other flora and fauna there was no hope of a rescue. Along the way those that the abominations deemed too sick, frail or weak were left bound along the path to die surrounded by their silken bonds. Lost amongst the dark, cold and at mercy to be preyed upon by what other nightmares haunted these tunnels.

The path led on for days of travel. The party had met some of the other residents of the tunnels but they fled when the true power of the party was revealed. Although the tunnels were bare from game or really edible material there were supplies and goods that had been with those taken from Kalehgrul that the party were able to find along the way. However by the Third day of travel the amount of webs on the ceiling, walls and floor of the tunnel decreased and a draft could be felt coming from up ahead.

As the party continued down the passageway the source of the draft was revealed. A large orb-like Cavern filled with webs and cocoons, and in the centre lay a inky-black pit. Something that seemed to drink in all light. The deep dark lay waiting before them.

Another few days in the underdark but this time chasing spiders to… something potentially worse. Don’t forget to come back each day this week so you can stay up to date on how this adventure turns out and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Foul Assault on Ferklend

Tonight and I have created a zine for a long over due adventure, Foul Assault on Ferklend. This adventure can be used system agnostic as we explore other RPGs out there other than D&D. So please adjust to what ever creatures you are using in your adventure! However as always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube currently provides the stat-blocks for creatures in this adventure.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, Foul Assault on Ferklend. There is a lot more content within the Zine, again, this week so if you want to get the full experience then download the pdf!

If you like this format please let me know and I hope you enjoy.

Tulkore Jungle – created in Nightcafe.

The drive to move onwards towards investigating the points of power that the Mage Andrasa had studied continued. Despite the gained knowledge from the Ice Spire there was a compulsion to move forward.

Not all was right at the Platara Ridge and from what they had heard of The Fulkore Jungle, and the Carrion Swamp, there was something foul brewing there too.

The jungles have always had undead in them, hence the name given to the swamp. But they were increasing in number now and fewer and fewer people came back from the jungle and more and more undead found their way to the city’s walls.

Is it tied to this Well of Souls or is there something else darker going on?

Thanks for joining me tonight for another Zine. This one had more content added to the Zine but like a few of my other ones I kept that in the Zine, not the blog. So you will just have to trust me on that and grab a copy of the Zine to check it out.

Next time you get a party together consider running this adventure and I hope that you enjoy it.
I hope you don’t miss a thing so come back daily in the coming week. This is so you can experience the creation of the next adventure as it evolves and shapes out. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Butcher of Ravencreek

Tonight and I have created a zine for the spookiest of times, Halloween. I present to you as my offering to the pumpkin lord, and any else who share in the delights of fright, The Butcher of Ravencreek.

So I hope you enjoy this Halloween adventure, The Butcher of Ravencreek. As usual there is a lot more content within the Zine, again, this week so if you want to get the full experience then download the pdf!

The Butcher of Ravencreek

Ravencreek – created in nightcafe.

The party arrived at Ravencreek on a chilled morning. There is a light fog that seems to have settled around the little town that is famous for its week-long celebration which attracts people from all across the land.

This means that for people who fancy themselves sellswords, thieves, do-gooders and even bandits the town is of a particular focus during these seven days of festivity.

However what they find is not the excitement and party that they expected, it’s a headless girl, a mourning town and a funeral – the first of many to come this bloody week.

Can the party find out who or what is killing the townsfolk and why?

The Cindermare and its Rider

Tonight we have a small reveal for some of the creatures for this weeks encounter, the Cindermare and its Rider! This deadly duo has a few tricks up its sleeve which will make it a challenge to any Level 9-11 party. But when we throw in the other creatures it will be truly horrific!. So grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s encounter!

The Cindermare and its Rider

343FrTCiAIRi

No matter how I look at the Butcher there are a few choices that could make it nearly impossible to beat. So I scaled down from what I originally had and decided to change some of the original legendary actions I had worked out into mobility defining ones. A Elf lord turned cinder-wraith should be mobile as he was in life but with the undead-spookiness that undeath grants.

All the better to enact a final curse with I suppose.

The Butcher created in tetra-cube.

The Cindermare is really just a reskinned nightmare. Despite this I have removed its ability to shed light and changed it up, being a creature that swallows a fire like soot does to cinders in a fire. It has some of its riders abilities of incorporeality but not as much and its not much of a war-beast and more of stylish ride for the Butcher.

Cindermare – created in tetra-cube.

Thanks for joining me tonight. Don’t miss coming back for the next few days as I, hopefully, finish up this Zine for a Saturday D&D session and also, hopefully, publishing a Zine from the lost archives. So don’t forget to drop back in for that and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Ravencreek Map

Now when making the Ravencreek map I almost got carried away with a bustling city. Yet taking myself back to the purpose of this town, its history and its people I reduced the stone, the walls and the industrial changes and tried to keep it a busy but humble town. Not a battle map tonight, as that can come in the Zine, but this one was a fun one regardless. So before I reveal too much about the surprises this weekend let’s grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s map!

Ravencreeks Map

343ThRaMa

Heavy woods surround much of this land and the clear fields were not cleared by hand of man or elf Setting itself amongst nature Ravencreek is tied into the land as much as the elves were once… Well maybe not that much but close enough.

to the top of the map we see the site of the old Elven town and the tower where the Butcher, Dokalvar, was burned. The hill is aptly named Butchers hill by the residents and its a place that is believed to be cursed by the wrong doings of the cruel warlord.

A rather large river runs across the bottom of the map which is a nice way I could get some industry on this map but over all its a simple affair.

That’s it for us tonight. Tomorrow promises to have a fair bit more and then Saturday will see the Zine (hopefully) produced. So don’t forget to come back for those days and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Butcher Rides

So this week we step away from our end-of-year conclusion adventure arc and we witness as The Butcher rides back through the town of Ravencreek. Tonight’s update is focusing around two encounters that hopefully set the scene a bit but there is another two to go before we wrap up the adventure. So sit back, grab a coffee and roll into tonight’s adventure!

The Butcher Rides

343WeTBuRi

Butchers Raiders – Created in nightcafe.

The party checked the shutters on their windows as they lounged in the Whispering Oak, a tavern in Ravenscreek. They had arrived the morning of the second day of the spring festival and had been shocked to find a town in mourning. The town was known for its cheery disposition and ties to nature due to the large elven influence in the town. But they had found that there had been a murder the night before and many of the key witnesses had been drunk or swept up in celebration.

The accounts of what had happened ranged from a single orc dressed in black robes leapt from a building and cleanly took off the Mayor’s, Elenore Bucklewheat, head with a sword to a ghostly spectre had rode in upon a flaming horse and taken her head from a wickedly curved axe. The Families of Ravencreek had gathered to ask the people here for the ceremony to help find the murder and several had put their hands up but as the party watched the sun come down man had come back with nothing to show.

As the party went down to the ground floor of the tavern they noticed one of the family members of Elenore was slowly walking towards the door, drunk, and a half-elven man was helping him towards the door. “Come on Cousin, let’s get you home. Everybody’s trying as hard as they can. You saw them at the noon ceremony. We all loved Elenore like a sister.” the half elf said as the gruffer man, Tom began to start asking people to go and look for his niece.

“She… She just wanted to do what is best for the town, you know? She was such a sweet kid. I..” he began before pausing at the door.. “You hear that?” he said loudly, “That sounds like Elenore. It can’t be!” he said as he pushed out the door and ran into the street. The door to the inn faced down the road and towards the west where in the distance the sun was setting behind the old elven ruins. In the dim light there was a figure walking down the road with a horse in their hand. Their clothes were dark and tattered but a voice carried faintly on the wind. “Thomson.. Tom…”

Rushing into the street Tom began to rush forwards with wide arms. The party moved out of the tavern to watch what was going on as something didn’t feel right – after all they had seen the body of Elenore just this morning. As they watched the figure mount the horse and begin to slowly ride down the road to meet Tom it’s voice constantly calling out to him. The party barely noticed the faintest sound of horses hooves, only just barely audible on the cobble stone as it rode past them and sped up towards Tom.

As the last ray of light from the setting sun trickled beyond the ruins on the hill they noticed a darkly clad rider draw a large curved axe from within the roads and separate Tom’s head from his shoulders. The second figure, a form with Elenores face, reached Tom at the same time and caught the head as he fell from his body. Together the dark figures sped off down the cobblestone as the screams began to call out from the onlookers.

Elenore and Tom Bucklewheat and now Jake Elarnao now were all found dead. Elenore cut down during the start of the ceremony, Tom was lured out into the open by a figure that looked and sounded like Elenore before a dark rider took his head and the body of Jake was found in a nearby grove for the 3rd days ceremony that he was preparing for the ritual. Each one of them was missing their head and people had heard the sound of horses each and every time.

The fourth day was here and for the last three days a figure had appeared, taken the head of someone from the town and disappeared again. The next time the figure appeared it had more riders and each of them were rumoured to look and sound like those who had been taken. But today the Town had a sigh of relief as the 4th ceremony was of fasting and quiet reflection. No one from the town was to be outside from lunch onwards as they all prepared for the next three days of feasting as they ramped up to the last day, celebrating life and the sun with a noon-feast.

But… As the party moved back to the inn after meeting with the town’s historian and sage they were called to from the store room. As they approached Mae, the sister of Jake, was panicked. “Oh thank the gods you’re here. I tried to stop him but he didn’t listen. Arlorn Ponte hasn’t come back from the woods, I just know it. It started when we found out that one of the boars we had caught yesterday morning had rotted and was infested with maggots. I don’t know how we have cured it and kept it safe and secure as we always do. But when Arlorn found out he headed out saying he would be back before the curfew.”

She paused for a moment. “He said he knew where a boar had been seen. He is one of the best hunters in the village and so he knows his game. He was heading West near the elven ruins. Oh please look for him!” she pleaded.

The party head off moving with haste through the town street towards the ruins – the dark shapes stood out in the setting sun. The day was getting late. As they hurried towards a whistle caught their attention and a young, fair half-elven man was carrying a large boar on his shoulders. “Ah, I ran into some trouble in the woods. Fell into a pit. Managed to finally get out and get the boar for the ceremony but I fear that I will need to repent for my transgression on this day of reflection.” Arlorn said with a deep sigh.

“I thank you for your concern, but I am fine. I have a spring of willow that will keep any foul creatures from me. But I would ask that you help me with this boar, it’s been a long trek through the woods.” As the party passed the first houses in Ravencreek they felt relieved. Soon nightfall would be upon them and if it was as Arlorn said then he would be safe as many of the houses were built from Willow.

“Cousin…” A voice carried across the wind, Arlorn turned around “Is that.. Jake?” he said as he grabbed his bow and knocked an arrow. But as the voice carried on the wind so did two arrows that pierced his chest. Falling backwards he landed on the pavement hard, wheezing but trying to stand. The sound of four sets of hoof beats resonated as the dark figure on horseback was joined by similar figures with the appearance of Elenore, Tom and Jake. The Dark figures mare was horrifyingly quick and in a moment he was leaping from the ground his axe raised. But Arlorn held out the bow and a sprig of willow.

The creature’s raised axe hesitated, a look of hatred flashed across the burnt, cracked flesh from under the hood, and in the beat of a heart the creature hurled itself on the back of the mare. Up close and clear to see in the dying light the mare’s body was sunken and its mane and tail were made from cinder ridden smoke. With a fearsome whinny the creature turned the mare around and kicked out with ember-red hooves into the centre of Arlorns chest pushing the arrows in further and sending the man crashing into the party.

In a matter of moments the four figures were riding back west, into the woods and beyond.

Thanks for reading through tonight. A bit of a long one and, hopefully, not too rail-road-y for the players. I enjoy writing more story-driven sessions like this so if this is something you’d like to see more often let me know. Don’t forget the next two nights are also going to be action packed so don’t forget to come back for them. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Families of Ravencreek

Now tonight I think I have realised how much I have bitten off with this this weeks project when I started to construct two of the families of Ravencreek. The Elarnao line and the Bucklewheat lineages can trace their family roots back to the first people to call Ravencreek home which, unfortunately, resulted in One of their demise at the hands of our horseman. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s meet some of the family.

The Families of Ravencreek

342TuSwFo

The Elarnao Family

Arlorn Ponte – Created in Artbreeder

Descendent from the original elven family Arlorn is a hunter who spends most of his time in the woods. Trained in his ancestral ways of hunting and gathering he honours each animal that he kills and only takes what is needed for the family and villagers who need it.

Mae Elarnao – Created in Artbreeder

Mae works in one of the stores in Ravencreek with her brother Jake. They primarily sell supplies to travellers but also assist in their parents inn, the Lonely Pine when times are busy.

Jake Elarnao – Created in Artbreeder

Jake handles the delivery from the family store and is a strong and fast lad despite his appearance.

Quick to help and assist some may say he trusts to easily and talks to freely but he fails to see the bad in people which has gotten him into trouble on the odd occasion

The Descendants from the Elarnao family all have a strong elven bloodline. They age very slowly and are normally closely tied to the land and the animals of this place. They pass down the stories of their ancestors and the trials that they went through when Dokalvar attempted to tear what they had put together with the humans. They practise the traditions of old and some are still trained as warriors.

The Bucklewheat Family

Kindred Bucklewheat – Created in Artbreeder

Mother at a young age of 18, Kindred continued to work on the farm and has a way with animals. Now being in her late 40s her daughter rose quickly to become the town’s mayor and was celebrated for her bond to the new ways of working and her ties to tradition.

The death of her daughter weighs heavily on her and she is wracked with grief and anger and the recent events.

Elenore Bucklewheat – Created in Artbreeder

Elenore was the youngest mayor to be elected in Ravencreek. She had the strongest connection to the land and animals in a human that any in the town had seen and her dedication to the traditions of old and her plans to support the town quickly drew the favour of not just the elders and all those who met her.

However she is the first, and currently, only victim of the horseman that attacked during the first night of the week of celebration and her death shocked the community.

Thomson Bucklewheat – Created in Artbreeder

Tom is the brother of Kindred and thus uncle to Elenore. Despite his sadness and grief over the loss of his niece he continues to try and seek answers despite his age (if half-elves can really call themselves getting old in their 50s).

A farmer and one who has a strong connection to the land Tom is not an unpleasant person to work with but he generally has few words for strangers.

The Bucklewheat family are farmers and tend to the land and the animals. They have a strong bond to most of the village as their family has always provided food to the community since the founding of Ravencreek. Although they are slowly dwindling in numbers their bloodline had hope with Elenore recently becoming engaged but her untimely death stopped those wishes. It’s up to her ageing uncle and her more elven great uncle now to continue on the ancient line of farmers in Ravencreek

A big night of updates for a big week ahead. It’s been a while since I have had soo many NPCs in one post and I think its a testament to what is going on in the background. Don’t forget to come back each day this week as we continue to expand this adventure and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,
