Naya Fieldmoss

Naya Fieldmoss was the first of the villagers to greet the party when they were approaching Ponkae and she is also the one that the party runs into when the first sign of trouble happens.

So grab your coats, boots and a hot coffee as we go into the rainforest in tonight’s adventure!

Naya Fieldmoss and scouts – Created in WordPress!?

The party had a knack for finding problems and the sound of raised voices and cries of alarm brought them towards a large round amphitheatre where people were talking quickly. ‘Its been over a month now and we still haven’t found the successor to his farm. If we don’t act immediately it will be too late to harvest the cocoons.’ one man was saying passionately. ‘All those trees, all that silk and all that moon broth gone to waste.’

‘The wishes of Tamaya was that only his descendants would inherit the farm and its harvest. He had issued a letter to be delivered to his next of kin but,’ the elder paused for a moment, ‘it’s harder than expected. It seems many of them left the village quite some time ago and the historian is looking for the next in line.’

As the debate continued Naya came storming forward, briefly catching the eye of the party, before kneeling before those arguing. ‘Elders.’ she began and waited to be addressed. With a not the oldest of them asked her to make her report.

‘A creature has been spotted in the village. It has a shell as red as blood and it stormed towards the trees on the second level and snatched several cocoons in its claws before darting into the forest to the east. But none of my scouts reported seeing it enter the village only as it left.’ she said as another similarly dressed man knelt beside her.

‘Elders.’ he added before they asked him to report in turn. ‘A creature with many legs has attacked some of our farmers to the north on the lowest farm before stealing their cocoons from their baskets and fleeing into the forest to the north. The weird thing…’ he began

‘None of the scouts reported seeing the creature enter?’ the elder finished for him. The man nodded looking over at Naya. A moment later a third scout knelt before them, ‘Elder.’ he addressed the group. ‘Let me guess. A creature with several legs and blood red skin stole cocoons and fled into the village with none seeing the creature enter?’ the man looked bewildered but nodded.

‘There is a legend.’ the elder continued as he sat in front of the scouts, the party noticed Naya roll her eyes. ‘That the red harvesters will appear as intervention of the gods when the village becomes to greedy. When we seek to take more than we give to the forest. They appear out of the forest air itself, take what they want and leave a trail of destruction in their wake.’ he finished looking towards the forest.

‘Naya, you and the other scouts are to track them down, study them but to not attack them as they are the will of the gods.’ the elder ordered. Naya nodded and turned to leave before looking back to the elder.

‘Elder. These travellers have come from far away to see this village. I request that they be allowed to join as they may have encountered these creatures before and may be able to save lives with their knowledge, that is if they are also willing.’ she looked towards the party.

The elder nodded. ‘You have my approval. Protect lives and find where they went.’

Grub Harvest

This week kicks off with the party encountering a group of farmers mid grub-harvest. The grubs are used by the farmers to help produce a particular crop and have been for many generations now. However, when tragedy falls upon the villagers they come to realise that not all is as it seems.

So grab your hatchets, knives and tweezers as we rustle up some grubs in tonight’s adventure!

The village of Ponkae has harvested the Moon weave grubs for years for their delicious nectar and the silk that they spin. However when the grub harvest happens to reveal a bigger problem where complacency and politics overrule common sense a bigger problem is revealed.

Now it’s up to a travelling group of adventurers to save the village and its people as their livelihood begins taking lives.

Grub Harvest

The Grub Harvest – Created in WordPress?!

The village of Ponkae was rumoured to be place of history, tradition and the most intoxicating food and drinks known throughout the region. As the party travelled through the wet rainforest roads they crossed many people moving through the underbrush with small hand-axes and two long thin reeds. As they moved about the ferns and decaying logs they would cut at the decaying matter and, occasionally, would excitedly yell out to those near by.

A flurry of activity later would see many axes hewing into the wood, before the reed like tongs would dash out and pick out a squirming red creature from the wood. Quickly deposited into little containers they carried on their hips the village folk would continue until there was nothing more of the wood before moving onto the next decaying wood matter and continuing the search.

‘They are hunting for Moon wave grubs.’ a voice said from near by. A woman who was nearly invisible as she moved from the log she was crouched on. Dressed in a long cloak and had that consisted of moss she blended nearly perfectly in with what she perched on. ‘My name is Naya and I am a watcher of this years harvesters. They search for the grubs that feed Ponkae’s harvest.’ she smiled toothily at them. ‘Now, you don’t mean any trouble for these fine harvesters do you or I’d have to cause you some trouble about now?’

As the party continued to speak with her as she moved along the path keeping one eye on the party and the other watching the surrounding area. As she spoke to them another call went out and she looked toward the harvesters who had made it. ‘Sounds like there’s something to investigate. I may see you at Ponkae if the forest wishes us to meet again!’ she called as she nimbly darted towards the call to see what was wrong.

It was not too long until they had begun to descend the large steps that would take them into the village. The sound of running water and insects could be seen everywhere where large trees with strange growths from their branches and trunks could be seen on the many tiered fields that surrounded the valley of the village. As they passed from one large jungle trees canopy to the next they were drizzled with the water droplets that came from above, it was always wet here from what they could tell. A large river cut the village in half and it took a steady stream of water out of the village and further down the valley.

As they passed some of the farms they could be seen taking large, arm sized silken cocoons out of the growths in trees and passing them to another famer near by who lay the quivering masses carefully into baskets before carrying them towards the village. The whole village was a whirl of motion and nearly every tree had someone harvesting large cocoons from it.

However one patch of trees was drying, large strips of black fabric swung from branches and no one touched trees despite it having the same swollen growths as the others. As the party moved deeper into the village they soon forgot the trees as the sights and scents of Ponkae caught up with them and they were surrounded by people selling silken products, pungent smelling oils, strong beers and the sweetest smelling foods.

The Wakeless Sleep

Now for the next Zine of the year I present, in single page zine format, The Wakeless Sleep. I still believe that these provide DMs a lot more freedom to tinker with it how they want and open up the adventures to be more free formed and flowing than the larger booklet zines.

There is references to the blog nights which are D&D centric (regarding Friday night’s Stat-blocks) but this adventure can be used system agnostic more so than my regular Zines. As always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for many of my D&D creatures.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, The Wakeless Sleep, and that all your rolls are made with advantage.

The Wakeless Sleep – Created in WordPress!?

The party arrived in Launghui, a coastal village famed for its plentiful fish harvests, but was met with an eerie silence and abandoned streets. Passing through the shark-jaw gate, they discovered shuttered homes and lifeless villagers lying in their beds, faintly breathing yet impervious to magic or aid. A teen girl named Sunraya stumbled along the road, sharing a chilling tale of a curse that had afflicted the village after the last catch. Alone in her wakefulness, Sunraya explained how a past offense to a witch had previously plunged the village into a similar slumber, only broken when the witch was appeased.

Despite their efforts to comfort Sunraya and unravel the mystery, the party uncovered unsettling signs of the curse’s grip. Sunrayaโ€™s refusal to eat the villageโ€™s tainted fish left her hungry but still conscious, while the rest of the villagers had fallen into a wakeless sleep after consuming the fish. After sharing a meager meal of fish from a nearby trap, Sunraya succumbed to sleep, her condition worsening as a faint magical presence enveloped her. With their only lead slipping away, the party placed Sunraya by her sleeping parents and stepped out into the fog-covered village, where they encountered a sea witch cloaked in seaweed and vengeance.

The sea witch declared her blood oath fulfilled, revealing her plot to poison the villagers through the very fish they loved, ensuring their downfall before awakening. Her sinister laughter echoed as she vowed to finish the task before the curse lifted, targeting the villagers for their past wrongdoings. Turning to the party, she recognized them as outsiders and attempted to charm them with her tragic tale of rejection and loss. Her words masked a thinly veiled threat as she advanced, the oppressive fog thickening around her. The witchโ€™s form grew more menacing, her nails elongating into talon-like claws as she moved toward the adventurers with feral determination. The party was faced with the critical choice to act swiftly or risk becoming her next victims.

The Sea Witch

Now after this weeks updates so far its pretty easy to guess what tonight’s update would be, the Sea Witch herself. Now not an overly strong creature, nor swift but she is highly proficient at magic. Able to summon fog seemingly at will she attacks from hiding before using the sea against her foes.

So buckle in as we’re heading into a storm for tonight’s encounter!

The Sea Witch

512FrSeWe

The party watched with horror as they thought, not for the first time in a few minutes, that they shouldn’t have provoked the sea witch. As she moved the thick fog swam over her form blanketing her from view and the sound of waves from the sea grew in intensity.

Her nails grew longer from her fingers as she strode towards them, moving from something human to something more feral. Long talon like claws extended from her finger tips to dagger length.

Sea Witch – created in tetra-cube.

While not overly fearsome itself it can use control water, while next to the sea, to drag the water up onto the shore. This will make the terrain difficult if not force every player to swim instead of being able to walk. This will make the Sea Witch much more difficult than its CR would make it seem (although the CR takes some of this into consideration.)

Thanks for stopping by tonight to get a glimpse of this weeks encounter. Don’t forget that this weekend we will add more tabletop content as well as the zine. So don’t forget to come back for the remaining days this week and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The party placed Sunraya in her bed next to her sleeping parents. As they left the room and looked around what remained in the village. The waters were quiet and still without the fishing boats out amongst the waves. The gulls waited, expecting the scraps from the latest catch that would never come.

But as the party watched the gulls swimming on top of the light waves the beginnings of fog started to creep across the water. As the fog crept closer to the jetty and moored boats the surface it thickened as if summoned from the waves itself. As the party watched from their position a large, hulking creature strode from the water onto the shore. Covered in large swaths of seaweed it straightened up and looked around the village with a cruel smile twisting its features.

A woman, some would say beautiful if not for the clothes that looked as if it had been salvaged from those lost at sea. As she sunk her toes into the sand, soil and gravel of the land of Launghuiย she inhaled deeply. ‘After years the blood oath is complete. The villagers that pillage the waters and refuse to trade with my sisters and mother is no more. The curse fully enacted.’ as she spoke water dribbled from her mouth.

A laugh, mad and joyful broke from her mouth. ‘To think the fish that they loved so much would be their downfall. It was easy mother! Like you said, ask the fish to feed upon the urchins and snails and the meat would be tainted with poison. As long as I kill them all before they wake in a few days time then they will be gone for good.’

The party watched as she strode forward, her eyes wandering across the houses and buildings of the port village. Before, they settled on them. ‘Some still wake sisters. Something that I was not planning for. Yet these are not the villagers that refused us, that drove us out, that attacked and hunted us. Or those who killed mother. No these as outsiders.’ she paused as she straightened herself. The touch of magic prickled their skins as she attempted to charm them.

‘You wont attack and drive me away like they did will you? Its been hard being lonely for so long. All we wanted was to partake in the feasts, the merriment from the creatures that they caught from the sea. Yet when we asked they drove us away. This is just fair and just retribution that we must do. Something we must see through.’ her words sounded like pleas, but the hidden threat was real.

The party were in danger of becoming the source of the sea witches hatred if they didn’t think quickly and act even more so.

Sunraya Whittle

After the party first met her Sunraya Whittle was an enigma. Nothing obviously wrong with her there lies the problem of why she doesn’t want to fall asleep. But let’s not tally any longer and get on the trail of this curse.

So sit back, have a no-doze and let’s crack onto tonight’s adventure!

Sunraya Whittle

512TuSuWh

Sunraya Whittle – Created in WordPress!?

The party looked at Sunraya, the girl that they found stumbling through the streets, and were shocked at her fight to stay awake. From what they could tell there was no sign of poison, curse or magic that was cast upon the girl to cause her to fear going to sleep. While they examined her parents and the other villagers they all appeared, on the majority, in fine health except for their slow heart beat, slow shallow breaths and dead-like appearance.

Sunraya’s biggest complaint was the hunger. She said that she had been waiting for the merchants to come back so she could trade fish for food that she would eat. Unlike everyone else in the village who had feasted on the freshly caught Laun fish she hated everything about the delicate meat.

So as she didn’t like the fish that the village caught she had been resolute in her belief that the merchant folk would return and she would trade the fish for something edible. However, by time she changed her resolve and decided that even if she hated it she needed to eat the fish – it was all gone. Gobbled up by gulls, cats and other creatures.

So she had survived of what little food stuffs she could find around the village but that was running low. It wasn’t until the party had seen a fish trap bobbing in the water that their luck turned around. Hauling out the twisted reed basket they found it had a few fish and a crab within. Sunraya, while she dislike the taste of fish, was appalled at the though of eating the crab and decided to eat the fish once grilled.

Mild and flaky was the flavour with a touch of natural saltiness which highlighted its appeal with the broader market of people. Yet after their meagre meal the party let Sunraya fall asleep, exhausted but now – watched over by them. That was until they detected the faint magical presence descend upon her as her colour drained, her breathing shallowed and her heart started to beat slower and slower.

With that the only lead that the party had drifted into a dead like sleep. Except for the meagre scraps of the fish that she had consumed as her last meal.

Like the Dead

Tonight we have a throwback to a distant memory of a story from my childhood with this weeks plot, like the dead. Not all is well in the Port down of Launghui and the party are here just in time to save the day, or join the villagers who lie in a wakeless sleep, just like the dead.

So suit up, grab a coffee as we dig into tonight’s adventure!

The wakeless sleep is an ancient curse that is thought to have disappeared from the memories of all centuries ago. However, in the sleepy port down of Launghui the entire village is gripped by a death-like trance. Every adult is asleep and unable to be roused and their children remain in the same trance.

That is until the party find a single child running through the village, stumbling on worn out shoes. When the party approach the girl responds but does not stop moving, ever moving despite being physically exhausted. The mystery lies around why the entire village except for one single girl appears dead while in a wakeless sleep. Will the party uncover the cause of the curse and break it before they too fall under its spell.

Like the Dead – Created in WordPress!?

As the party approached the village of Launghui the sight of ships docked along the piers was unsettling. Known for the fish that it brings in by the net-load from the bay the village had quickly become a destination for people who enjoyed the mild flavoured fish.

However as the party neared the gate, consisting of a set of giant shark teeth, they heard no reply to their calls for admittance. Despite their multiple attempts it wasn’t until they tried the gate that they found it able to swing inwards. Beyond the gates revealed a disheartening sight. Not a single soul was found to be moving around the houses or buildings. The fish market itself was empty with gulls being startled as they approach and flying off towards the sea.

Everywhere they looked they saw closed doors, shuttered windows and the signs of abandonment. By choice or by force it was yet to be determined. That was until they happened across an open window which revealed a family still, faintly breathing and pale in their beds. The same sight was found throughout the village.

Every adult and child was still as the dead, breathing so shallowly that it appeared as if they weren’t breathing at all and unable to be roused by magic or intervention. A sign from the other side of the road drew the parties attention to find a girl, perhaps in her early teens, stumbling along the road as she moved with as much haste as possible.

Approaching her and asking had had happened received a chilling answer. ‘The whole village never woke after they brought back the last catch. I didn’t sleep that night too excited for the market following day yet, no one was awake to sell the fish nor open the gate. I was scared so I didn’t open it despite the traders banging on the door and calling out. When I found my courage I opened the gate to get help but they had all left. They have not been back since.’

Despite talking the girl never stopped jogging, always moving along the smooth stony surface of the road. Something was foul in the village and the party insisted on stopping the girl from jogging as her shoes were close to being worn through. She protested and pleaded. ‘No, I must not stop. If I stop I will sleep, if I sleep I will not wake. The wakeless sleep has cursed the village again. My grandmother told me about it when I was younger. A curse that came from when we offended a witch disguised as a merchant – she made the village fall asleep. It wasn’t until we appeased the witch did our villagers start to wake. But the merchants were not displeased last they were here. We were all asleep before they arrived. All but me.’

The party arrived in Morrowell during the lively Festival of Botanica, a celebration of unique and healthy plants competing to be added to the druids’ prestigious gardens. Among the vibrant displays, one peculiar plant, owned by Colter Danier, drew both awe and suspicion due to its tropical appearance and rapid growth. Though cleared of cheating by the druids, Colter faced growing hostility, especially after the fiery Jiggo Greenthumb accused him of foul play and later mysteriously disappeared. Further investigations by the party revealed eerie drag marks leading to vanished villagers, with no traces of a struggle, deepening the mystery and unease in the village.

As night fell, the true threat emergedโ€”the carnivorous plants infesting the village with their questing vines, spreading a sweet, intoxicating aroma and golden pollen. At the heart was Colterโ€™s towering plant, now fully bloomed and surrounded by smaller, menacing blooms. The party fought bravely against the invasive flora, countering their powerful vines and overwhelming scent with teamwork and skill. In a decisive blow, they severed the main vine of Colterโ€™s plant, causing the sinister infestation to wither. Though victorious, the party was left to reflect on the near-disaster that could have overtaken the village.

The River Tanzee

Tonight I wanted to capture something that is done poorly other times, or not done well when looking at the river Tanzee. Any journey by river can be treacherous when poorly prepared and in the case below it’s evident that the information that was given to the party was not quite accurate. Hazardous environments, dangerous wildlife and rough conditions could make it difficult for anyone to travel safely if this is what they can expect.

So sit back, perhaps grab a fishing rod and a hat as we coast down the river in tonight’s adventure!

The River Tanzee

The River Tanzee – Created in WordPress!?

The river was cloudy with silt, which according to the locals meant that the next spring would bring a good harvest. The river Tanzee was the life blood for the area as it provided not just the life-giving silt from the river but also the bounty of food from its murky waters.

Fish, crustaceans, reptiles and amphibians called these waters home and the people of the land and river made a great deal of use out of the bounty from it. But as the party plunged the large poles in deep into the silty water and pushed their raft further down the river they couldn’t help but edge further away from the rafts edge when they could afford to let the rudimentary vessel drift down along the current instead.

A few times they had plunged the deep poles into the water below only to feel it connect with something more solid than the thick mud and silt that formed a blanket on the river bottom. As the poles connected with the solid mass it would move off quickly as if disturbed from a slumber and a disturbance on the rivers surface was all that could be seen.

However, as disturbing as that tyle of encounter with creatures was it was nothing compared to when they had one of their poles ripped from their hand and dragged under the water. The shattered and chomped remains floated back to the surface revealing that there was more under the surface of the water than what they were led to believe when they agreed to this route.

As they moved further downstream large birds flew overhead the raft hoping they were a fishing vessel, or, waiting for them to be the next meal. Large fish could be seen moving beneath the surface of the river as they moved next the reeds which caused a flurry of motion from the smaller fish caused the birds to dart down to snatch up the smaller fish. As a large narrow beaked bird dove into the water to snap up a fish the snap of its jaws was overshadowed by the crunch of a second set of jaws that ruptured out of the water.

A large toothed reptile erupted from the water, snapping up the bird in its jaws causing it to release the fish and try to fly out of the mouth of the large creature. Unsurprisingly, it was of little use as the bird was dragged under water within seconds.

More aware of the creatures that called this river home the party withdrew further to the centre of the raft and waited for the feeding frenzy to die down.

Carnivorous Creeper

Night times are the worst time to meet a carnivorous creeper on a evening garden walk. These man-eating plants use paralytic pollen to prevent prey from escaping its questing vines, and the more it eats the more plants it can create in a short amount of time.

So get ready, grab a torch or bonfire as we prepare to do some plant control in tonight’s encounter!

Carnivorous Creeper

511FrCaCr

The streets look different in Morrowell at night as thick twitching vines quest for its next meal. A sweet heady aroma can be smelt wafting through the air that makes the parties skin tickle and itch as it touches any exposed skin, or is breathed in. Something is not right.

Carnivorous Creeper – Created in tetra-cube.

The plant, Colters plant was the source of it and even from here the towering flower was open spreading a golden pollen upon everything it touched. But that wasn’t the problem as there were a few other smaller blooms sprouting from the straw roofs of nearby houses that had smaller questing vines searching for a meal.

There was some serious pruning that was needed tonight, and the party had a big job ahead of them.

Thanks for joining me for a quick one at my tabletop tonight. Carnivorous plants aren’t a new thing nor at they that uncommon in game settings but they are, in my opinion, seldom used. This weeks adventure is a perfect time to get them into the game and in a fun way. But while this may be the, potentially, last update for this adventure this week there is still two more days for my tabletop left.
