Kunagi Valley

Welcome to another chilled Thursday where the temperature doesn’t get above the single digits, well in southern half of Australia atleast. Tonight we look at the site of confrontation where the party are once again facing off against Royalty.

Kunagi Ranges encounter with wagon
Kunagi Ranges encounter without wagon

The valley itself is relatively thin, the walls and vegetation makes it hard to move anywhere other than then twenty feet road in the centre. The site of confrontation is pretty straight forward. Creature blocking the path with a semi hostage.

The snow either side of the road is difficult terrain and will require the party to move n slower unless they are used to the cold and snow.

The road, however, is slippery and if anyone was hit, including the creature, they are to make a dex saving throw or fall prone. Dc is half the Damage of the attack or 12, which ever is higher.

Trees provide half cover for medium creature to hide behind whilst small creatures gain 3/4 cover. This means guerrilla tactics will pay off for the party as long as thr creature doesn’t engage in melee then all bets are off.

So you may have seen that I have this as part one, well I plan on having a few stages to this encounter and this weekend I hope to be able to reveal a suite of maps for our encounter. But more on that tomorrow and the weekend.

Thanks for dropping by tonight and for your continued interest in my blog here. As I may have mentioned this blog turns one very soon and I’d like to celebrate in a very Brazen fashion. So don’t forget to keep tuning in to stay up to date and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Cut Off

Welcome to our last Wednesday of the content driven weeks before we tie it all up in next weeks end of month content! This week we are taking a sneak peak at the end of week where the party face off against the mountain queen, self proclaimed or otherwise. So sit back, enjoy and snuggle up – its going to get frosty.

The wind was the first sign that something was wrong, no more did it drive down the valley like a surging wave that consumes all in its path, no this wind came from the mountain peaks and with it came a dusting of snow. As the snow flakes shone in the last dying light of the setting sun the break in the mountains ahead revealed their way out of the valley and the party and travellers in Jason’s wagon could not contain their relief. That was until the screaming and shouting could be heard drifting down from the sky above.

The party had just enough time to throw themselves backwards as ice erupted from the ground next to them, sending spears of ice exploding from a rock and impaling trees resulting in a shower of splinters. to rain down on the party. Large, white wings pushed the snow and falling debris towards the party as creature twice the size of the wagon landed in the middle of the road, clutching Ester in one of its claws as it stood on the ground – leaning forward a large blade of everfrost pushing into the ground to steady its bulk and support its weight on the ground.

“Run!” called Ester before she was pushed into the snow by the creature putting its weight down on that leg.

“I was told to expect some heroes from a distant land, but I was expecting more from the tales that I have heard” the creature said in its chirping sing-song voice, “how disappointing” she said as she lifted its rear talon to hold up Ester who appeared to have blacked out. “This human tried to warn you of my presence, tried with all her might to reach you but I think I will keep her alive for a little while – a play thing until I get hungry.” the creature punctuated with a snap of its beak. “Now, lay down your arms and I will make your death swifter, but just as painful”

So this twist is simple, the creature believes it self to be above everything, beyond reproach and beyond the reach of mere mortals. However, it does value its life and holds its bargain with the Shadow and Yukri (the Yuki-onna) seriously as it knows of what happens to oppose the Shadow. The first stage of this fight is simple, rescue Ester by dealing enough damage to the creature. But.. more on that on Friday.

Nearly a year done and I must say that I am still ecstatic, giddy even, to see people reading my little blog here. I have some bigger plans for the next year of this blog and I hope that you will continue to be a part of this and keep reading what I write week after week. Don’t forget that if you have a name for the village to comment on any post and let me know your suggestion as I will pick the one I like the best and name it after that. Don’t forget to come back each night this week for more content, and the conclusion of the traversal through the Kunagi ranges, and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Rear guard

Welcome to NPC night where on Tuesdays we look at the NPCs that may have some insight for our party, plot against our party or interact in some meaningful way other than being another target for spells, slings or swords. This week I planned to have an interaction between Hana and the creature, the mute and the mountain queen – but as I started to write it an idea for a third interaction came into it and so the story expanded and, sadly as with most nights for me, a re-write occurred. So hopefully you like todays content and it provides a bit more insight into what’s happening this week.

White Tidings

229TuWT

The cold wind nipped at her exposed nose and ears as she looked up at the wagon in the distance and sighed with relief. After finding her aunt half eaten by the creatures that came at night she didn’t care about the warnings of the Yuki-onna or even the creature that had been destroying her village – nothing had bothered her, even the cold didn’t bother her half as much as normal. But the things she had seen on her pursuit of the adventures and the wagon had worried her, the creatures big and small, malicious and marvellous all threaded upon everfrost like grim warnings of what travellers in the valley could expect between the valley walls.

That is why she needed to find them, those foreign adventures the one from the same place as Hugh and Jason, her aunt had tons her the night before that they were the only ones that could stop the attacks and had left a single talisman out for their good fortune. Ester was sure that is what had drawn the creatures to her aunt’s room and they had decided to make a spectacle, a statement from her defiance. And now she was racing to them, making up lost ground as they seemed to be moving slower now, whether by choice or not was yet to be determined but it gave her a chance to catch up and ask for help.

Running across the snow was nearly impossible but she moved as quickly as she could, holding her fathers bow with a notched arrow ready to defend herself if anything thought her an easy meal. The talismans and charms draped around her neck should keep most things away or help her natural senses keep her from harm but there was always a cost to such enhancements and she had trouble hearing anything over the wind in the valley. Her heightened senses seemed to be picking up the overwhelming noise of the mountain itself, animals and creatures as well but the wind, groaning trees and cracking twigs – everything was loud.

Surprisingly so she didn’t notice the massive white creature until she nearly bumped into it.

Large thick claws adorned the rear feet and powerful legs, claws and a large blade made of everfrost capped the middle of two large wings that where covered in feathers and scales that made it blend in perfectly to the surrounding snow and frost. A large avian head and sharp beak with Jagged teeth contrasted with the highly intelligent eyes that looked down upon her with amusement and mirth.

Raising her bow she pointed it at the creature who’s beak twisted into the mimicry of a smile. “A brave one to point such a small arrow at the mountain itself” the massive creature said in a chirpy song-like voice. “You get one shot so I’d make it count. But to shoot me results in only your death and not mine little creature” and Ester knew it was true. The creature was as big as the trees, the scales were like metal plates and the volume of feathers made it hard to see where flesh was beneath them. She considered her options and looked towards the wagon, a few hundred feet away, the wind whipped her hair and covered her eyes as it fanned out in the direction of her gaze. A carrying wind she thought. Grabbing one of her talismans, one of luck, she wrapped it around the arrow slowly as the large creature watched her with amusement and curiosity. “I’m afraid to tell you that those talismans don’t work on me little one” the monster said as it moved forward, the everfrost blades biting into the snow and earth giving its massive form purchase. As quick as she could, drawing from her talismans to augment her speed and skill with a bow Ester raised the bow and loosed on a single shot, carrying the talismans with it.

The arrow soared past the creatures head who turned its to watch the arrow fly off into the distance, a breeze pick it up and push it into the wood of the wagon next to the rear door.

“Very clever” the creature said as she turned to look at he girl. “Very clever indeed” it repeated as it lunged upwards grabbing Ester and carried her in her powerful hind claws into the sky, the sudden appearance of a flurry of snow blocking visibility and shrouding the creature and Ester in white as it ascended into the mountain peaks.

Hana stared at the snow as the talisman swung backwards and forwards in the rocking motion of the wagon. She had seen it, she was sure she saw a massive creature fly into the sudden snow flurry and ascend into the sky. As the party arrived around her, and Kyoko gripped her shoulder she realised that she was shaking. Grabbing a quill, a pot of ink and some paper she started to sketch what she thought she saw, but no matter how she tried to describe it with words, or she tried to draw it no one had a clue of what was out there – but they recognised the charm attached to the arrow embedded in the door.

After half an hour the party returned with a bow and reports of the same large scrape like markings in the snow.

Revealing the creature to the one person who can’t talk, and who happens to be not very good at drawing I might add, is a way to keep the mystery there and gives us, the DMs, the opportunity to ramp up the excitement around the encounter.

Tomorrow night we will expand a bit more around it as dusk falls and the party are almost out of the valley…

Thanks for visiting and reading tonight, a bit of a bigger writeup compared to some of the last ones but I hope it was worth the read. Watcher

Welcome to another Monday night in our lead up to the end of the month and the reveal of the mysterious ice creature. This week I’ll shift our perspective a bit and tonight I will focus on a different point of view as tie the last few components together into what I hope will be a fun end of week adventure.

Vassal

As the rabbit with horns erupted from the bush and ran off across the edge of the road, darting behind bushes and around trees, branches and rocks in its escape from the humanoids that had discovered it in its hiding place the party watched it with weapons at the ready lest it was another beast ready to attack them, or worse. As the parties tension eased in the following silence they moved about the snow covered road they put their weapons away and started to move across the road to check for anything else that was nearby. No matter how far and thoroughly they looked they were unable to shake the feeling of being watched, or a predator being nearby – the cold and fatigue of the last days travel taking its toll on the adventurers making shapes in the snow look like beasts and spirits getting ready to lash out at the party and strike them down where they stood.

After they were certain nothing was near by the party and the wagon rolled onwards down the road, returning to being alert and keeping an watchful eye on the walls of the valley, the trees and the snow.

She watched from a nearby wall of ice and rock through the sporadic leaves and branches between her keen eyes and the humans that were travelling through her lands – the one that had been marked by the shadow and the queen. Twisting her neck around she moved away from the rock, her strong neck moving away from the wall of rock and ice as her claws and broad axe-like graft of everfrost that adorned her forelimbs dug into the rock, dirt and ice to secure herself and support her weight. As she moved her body upwards to a crouching position she compressed her body until it was like a coiled spring and released, spreading her forelimbs wide as the framed membranes spread wide and her weight was caught by the wind and she soared higher into the sky as the wind tunnel help carry her higher into the sky quickly – her eyes never leaving the humans and their wagon as they moved onwards.

Creatures scattered in the forest as she revealed herself from her hiding spot, she loved this feeling, the fear, the reverence. She was the mountain itself and those who lived in these rocky outcrops were her subjects, only fit to live her by her good grace. As she soared higher she saw the sun setting on the end of the valley causing the spikes of ice she had created sparkle like jewels through the rift between her rock and snow. Latching onto the tallest rocky peak, digging the ice blade in deep to secure purchase, she watched the humans, they not being aware that they would be dead with the coming sun. A smile formed on her lips, rare for her species but she was an oddity for her kind any way and as long as she was still ruler of these rocky lands she cared not for the wars that happened to the east and west of her, for here she was queen.

Content to watch and plan she climbed to the peak, using her four limbs and he thick and wide tail to give her balance as she gripped into the cold earth. Reaching the peak she sat there and preened her feathers, the yellow sunlight causing her white and blue feathers and scales to glow like the snow that surrounded her as she made sure that she looked her best for the guests she had in her hunting grounds – for the hunt was about to be on and she did not want to disappoint.

So finally revealed, a large feathered creature with wings that tends to blend in well with the environment. Summoning everfrost is not the only trick this creature will have up its sleeve and the encounter that will go with it will be something new, but inspired by a few scenes from movies and tv shows.

Thanks for joining me tonight for another glimpse at what runs through my mind and what is driving the adventure for this month. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for more content, exploring a bit more about one of the NPCs that we have with us – or maybe all of them at once so best not miss it in case I plan on doing something pretty fancy, and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Valley of Frost

Welcome to another end of the week in which our party discovered more ice – who would have thought it? But its what lays impaled upon the ice, around it and what makes it is what has the party both intrigued and worried. The party commence their journey through the ranges this week and onto the home stretch as they push from the cold north east past the Kunagi ranges and onwards to the Harimasu lands beyond.

The Inn of no Vacancies

As the party walk back into the village they are see many of the people that call this place home are busy repairing doors, windows and shutters that look as if they were torn open or broken into forcefully but despite the party offering help they receive a brief, fake, smile and their help is refused.

As the party move through the village they see that the inn seems to have received the worst of the attacks that happened the night before as the owner, Hugh, and a few other villagers were busy rebuilding a wall. Upon seeing the party he moved towards them looking nervous.

โ€œYou cant be here, the spirit-folk somehow knew that I had spoken to you and I woke up to one of the inns walls being ripped down.โ€ He paused as he nodded to Jason โ€œwhen this is over please do come back, but I canโ€™t lose the inn, not after all it has cost me.โ€ As clasped Jason on his should and nodded a sorrowful nod to the party, Kyoko, Hana and Kuang he looked at the wall as it was put back into place and stood there with his hands on his hips.

Following his gaze the party noticed that the wood itself looked like something large, wide and sharp had bit into the wood on one corner of the wall and ripped it out with very little effort โ€“ no evidence of blade, club or other known weapon seems to have caused the damage. Moving up towards the wall while Jason took the princess, her cousin and the general to get more supplies for crossing through the ranges the party noticed that large shards of extremely hard ice were imbedded into the wood along the mark where the wall had suffered the blow that tore it from its housing. Taking a shard of it the shard of ice seemed to permeate cold through the holders hands and only several layers of cloth, or two bags could stop the chill from numbing the flesh. Whilst holding and examining the ice Ester appeared behind them โ€œIt wont melt. We tried everything the first time we found it -in our well โ€“ we call it forever frost, or permafrost for those who found that the name sounded too much like an attempt at poetry. Donโ€™t hold it for too long as it will bond to your flesh and start to freeze your insides. Shen found that out when we had to cut off his frozen finger before it spread to his hand.โ€

Jason arrived not too long after and after Ester did and after some some quick goodbyes they jumped into the back of the wagon and were heading off โ€“ towards the Kunagi ranges whilst the weather was still on their favour.

The dusting of snow between the ranges was miraculously thin on the frozen mud of the road yet it piled up next to the rocky cliffs and trees either side of the road where the wagon squelched behind an anxious draft horse.

The weather had turned slightly to the worse, small flurries of snow had begun to drift down upon the wagon but it it wasnโ€™t the weather that was cause for concern, the sheer number of tracks from spirit folk and the creatures that called this valley and mountain ranges home were the source of growing concern. It was beginning to be unusual to see a section of snow that didnโ€™t have discarded cloth, foot prints or even bones of a meal and they all seemed to be heading in the same direction. The trees offered some protection from the snow regardless and while the party wasnโ€™t used to this level of snow and cold but the wagon was kitted with double walls and a level of cloth and material on the inside that made the inside comfortable if not cosy.

The old grey stallion whinnied and the wagon came to a stop as the horse spooked and started to retreat backwards causing the wagon to lurch before the wheels met snow by the side of the road and stop abruptly. โ€œIt may take me some time for me to be able to convince this old thing to move forward. But what ever is spooking it isnโ€™t far from here and Iโ€™d rather be prepared than having to make a quick exit from this valley.โ€ Jason called as he tried to pull the horse into line.

Leaving the wagon and moving forward as quietly and stealthily as possible the party moved further into the valley as a strange and foul smell crept down from the wind that swept down into the valley from the peaks above them. Up head the snow had been disturbed and great furrows had been embedded into the frozen soil, similar to the ones that they saw on their approach into the village before the ranges. A wide crescent of fresh footprints gave a wide berth to the marks and from the looks of them the creatures that made them were scared, terrified even. Looking around for traces of what could have caused the owners of the footprints to act as such they eventually drew their investigation to the valley walls above them and there they saw the cause.

A great rupture of spikes made from the same ice that they had a shard of burst forth like lightning made from ice. The dark blue of the ice as it erupted from the stone face extended into the middle of the valley, a good sixty feet from the wall and at the end of each of the spikes that had erupted forth resided a skewered creature. Oni, ogres, Natโ€™s and even bears the size of the wagon they travelled in lay skewered on the ice, pushed on with enough force to pierce even the stone-like hide of the Nat. Looking at the ice as it had exploded out the trees themselves had their upper branches frozen, splintered and a few shards of frost encrusted splinters of wood lay just under the surface of the snow.

The ice must have been so cold that there was very little blood from the creatures that hung their, rigid and dead and what blood there was hung like frozen spears of ice suspended fifty feet in the air above the area where the scrape was. Something or someone would have had to have done this and to best that many creatures at once would indicate something both large and strong beyond anything that the party would have faced thus far.

Returning back to Jason they found him having blindfolded the horse and moving towards them and when he saw the gruesome display the colour drained from his face. โ€œI have known some of the creatures of the ranges to be vicious but to be cruel like this is another level. We can make it through the ranges today if we hurry but it will get dark early inside these ice covered walls so we canโ€™t dally any more.โ€ he urged as he ushered them into the back of the wagon to join Kuang, Kyoko and Hana. โ€œHold on, we wonโ€™t be slowing down for some time and I pray that the old horse makes it.โ€

NPCs

Kyoko Harimasu

Kyoko is quiet but stays in the wagon with Kuang and Hana once they are moving – she seems alert and has procured a bow from somewhere which she seems to know how to use well enough. She watches the walls of the valley and keeps an eye on the path behind them – calling out if she see’s movement to alert the party.

Captain Kuang Ping

Kuang is never seen without his hand on his sword during their procession through the valley pass as his first order of business is to defend Kyoko and now Hana. Having seen the impaled creatures he looks concerned as if he may know something but truth be told he has forgotten what it is – but the identify of the creature is just on the tip of his tongue but he can’t remember it. What ever it is – he hasn’t encountered it personally and it is very rare.

Sasha (Hana Toshio-Harimasu)

Hana avoids the combat as much as possible and sticks pretty much exclusively with Kuang and Kyoko. She is by no means rude to the party but doesn’t leave the wagon.

Hugh Grohw

Hugh this week is rattled, having something rip open his inn and leave shards of this everfrost lying around seems like a bad omen to him – perhaps he is right. Regardless its bad for business and he cant take another hit or loss so he, against his true wishes, requests for the parties to leave so he can protect his investment.

Jason Keening

Jason is a bit annoyed about being pushed out of the town so early, but understands well enough the reason for it. That annoyance quickly turns to urgency as they begin to find the threaded and impaled creatures upon spikes of everfrost and he urges the party to move as quickly as they can so they can clear the ranges and get distance between what even lives in the mountains and themselves.

Environment and running the adventure

The cold air blasted along the rocky outcrops high above the valley below like a great exhale from the frost itself. As the mountains awoke, small creatures scurried forth from their dens to begin a day of foraging for food and keeping an ever watchful eye above and around them for predators.
The trees braced against the wind as flurries of snow and frost spattered their frozen trunks with the white powder, great long icicles growing from branches like teeth from the jaws of a many jawed creature that waited for the foolish or unprepared to wander within. As the wind jostled the branches high in the ranges a wagon crossed beneath down far below the edge of the lip of a crater that has been carved out by sharp ice over many years.

The groan of axle and call of great of burden could not be heard over the wind, the mountains song, but creatures spooked by the presence in the ranges dashed for cover, a fox cowering under the roots of a tree that clung onto the edge of the cliff. Scenting the air around it the fox moved out on soft deliberately placed paws, its eyes darting around as the sense of danger was strong and it had a burrow to return to.
Dashing across the snow, its twin tails leaving a wisp of a trail as it moved from hiding hole, to bushes, to ledge as it slunk towards its den. A final check to see if the coast was clear before it darted for the base of a tree where the entrance of its den lie. The Fox should have moved slower, or kept one eye on the sky or simply should have waited between the cage of frozen roots as no sooner than it leave the seclusion of the ledge a sickening thud followed by a crunch as a row or everfrost descend down upon it, piercing and severing multiple organs at once.
The warm red blood splattered across the snow, a similar contrast to the colour of red of the for from the fox as it died shredded by ice.

The creak of an axle, groan of a wheel and cry from a hawk high above the scenes below joined the wind in praising the strength of the mountain, a song for its power and its unquestioned rule.

Shapes behind the flurry of snow

The image of those creatures, large and small alike threaded upon those needle like spikes of ever frost was enough to rattle even the bravest of souls. As the party moved through the valley more large scrapes, cuts, and spikes of ice with threaded animals and creatures were encountered but all other evidence of the cause, natural or otherwise were no where to be found.

As the party turn a bend around a particularly expansive spire of ice a sudden flash of movement in the ice and snow gave them cause to pause and press themselves up against the spire of ice, well close to it at risk of freezing themselves. Focusing on where the movement was, their heart beats fluttering like mad, a tentative white rabbit with little stag-like horns appeared, sniffed the air a few times before quickly hopping from the bush it hid behind to another one further down the road.

This wasnโ€™t the only such encounter that set the parties senses on edge as they continued, slower since they wanted to scout the way for the wagon a few hundred feet in advance, but after seeing, and continuing to see the threaded creatures on spikes of un-melting ice they were not going to take any chances.

Potential Encounters

Horned Rabbit – the Jackelope

The Horned rabbit (Jackelope) is a strange creature. Small, non vicious but adorned with razor sharp horns that could gut a non defended man these creatures dart around skittishly without warning and their white coloured fur makes them difficult to see amongst the snow and ice.

Giant Boar/ Giant Goat

Although two distinct animals the giant boar and giant goat play the same role in this adventure – something that may attack if threatened, whether they believe they are or are actually in danger. I’d say a low perception check would lower the distance between the party and the creature before they are discover each other – if its within 20 feet (which, lets be reminded is only 3.5 times the height of an average person) then the Goat or Boar is spooked and will charge at the party.

Dire Wolf

This one is simple – its hungry, maybe in a pack, maybe its stalking the Goat/Boar/Jackelope and it meets the party. Either it feels cornered or its just hungry but either way the party look mighty tasty to the Dire Wolf.

The encounter(s) should be suspenseful, moments of fear whether its something that summons ice, or one of the spirit folk or more undead creatures sent after them. What ever it is we want the party to guess the worse because, oh, its coming for them next week.

Between this adventure and the next I would assume that the party are at level 7, if not there already, as they will need it.

Aftermath

As always its up to you, but for me I’d have them finish the last combat with the feeling of a presence, something looming near by in the white.

This adventure flows onto next weeks which will be centred around an encounter between the party and what has been watching them and leaving little gifts for them so whether the party fight it tired from a fight or fresh faced is up to the party.

Another end of week write-up down and one more to go before end of month. Don’t forget that this week coming is the last week of the month where we finish our trip through the valley pass and things start to look brighter.. Well whiter at least. So in order to make sure you don’t miss a beat don’t forget come back every day and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Place of note – isle of beasts

Now tonight I want to take a pit stop at a place that could appear in any Adventure that’s above or, with some creative thinking, below the surface of the waves – the isle of beasts.

Curiosity #3 – Captains Book

Last entry.

The crew have returned to the ship, I don’t blame them after what we have seen on this island and I don’t have the heart to tell them that it won’t do them any good. We set down anchor on this island to make repairs after a freak storm broke our mast and pushed us against the reef causing us to take on water.

We were about to abandon Red Tides, my ship, then we saw the peak of mountain which promised land. Limping our way to this cove the tall peaks of the island, hot dense forests and fresh water made it look like a god send so we went ashore to find supplies to mend the ship and stock up for the journey home.

Making our way into the forests we found suitable trees, saps and the like to repair the hulls breach and a suitable trunk to replace the mast. All was fine until we heard a sound like thunder, a rumbling that spoke of the old Dwarven gods Dwaine would tell us about. Investigating we came across a cave that was home to some of thr largest eggs we have ever seen, reptilian, avian or dragon we could not tell but on our hastened flight from the cave we stumbled upon a pack of apes the size of giants… They ate the first of the crew to run in terror and then the slowest of us.

Birds whos feathers could be sails for skips picked a few of us off and centipedes got a few of the crew who were preparing the mast.

By nightfall we had the mast ready to install, it cost us a few more men and women to retrieve it but we had it, but not the manpower to hoist it up. A few of us returned inland again to get supplies for the rowboats to get a the remaining crew back out to see but we were discovered by something… Else.. words cant describe it but it wasn’t no beast I have seen before. It slowly followed those who ran screaming to the ship and ignored those who hid. For now. The ship and crew will be lucky to survive the night with that thing following them. I’ve decided to take a boat in the morning, if I last that long, and any who survive and get off this island with what little supplies I have.

If you find this journal beware the isle that appears after a storm, its an unholy place and it brings death. Best bet is to drown at sea instead of coming to this place…

Whether discovered on the island or in a shop somewhere little books that hint or tell of an island that none can find but appears as if sent by the gods are commonplace in RPGs. They can drive players to seek the island, push them to leave such a place or set an ominous tone for if the party does find themselves in a storm with an isle appearing suddenly. They can be a good place for a one shot, can be mysteriously set in the underdark (see movies like journey to…) and are common enough in movies and literature that inspiration is aplenty.

Thanks for joining me tonight for a little adventure inspiration, I am busy this weekend sketching out some core rules for an RPG I want to create so time is a bit short. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for the end of week write-up and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Rattled and shattered

Welcome to Friday where tonight we normally investigate the encounter of the week and when combat isn’t an option we try to add some form of encounter that enables our party to use those acrylic geometric shapes that keep us addicted to the hobby – yup dice.

Spooked

This wasn’t the only such encounter that set the parties senses on edge as they continued, slower since they wanted to scout the way for the wagon a few hundred feet in advance, but after seeing, and continuing to see the threaded creatures on spikes of un-melting ice they were not going to take any chances.

The creatures aren’t meant to be ferocious or create a threat for the party – they are the prey in this valley just as much as the party and so they will be doing their best to avoid being seen. As the party encounter them, randomly roll and describe but perhaps starting with the boar, then the goat and wolf then the horned rabbit – then it could set the pace between potential encounter, potential encounter then suspenseful encounter before we move on for the week.

Thanks for joining me tonight and a special call out to the awesome person who suggested a name for the village! So far we have the winning name of Laniidae. Its pretty neat so currently we have the name of our village, but two more weeks until I finalise it so there is still time to put forward suggestions!

Don’t forget to come back this weekend, I have a pretty full social calendar for a change this weekend so I will perhaps not get around to as much as I want to this Saturday but on Sunday we have the end of week writeup which will summarise and knit together the content of the week! So don’t forget to come back for that and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Winter Valley

Welcome to Thursday night where we add that little bit, more, that little bit extra to the adventure that helps to paint a picture of what the week brings. Tonight I wanted to play around more with Artbreeder and look at the view from inside the valley, away from the frosty peaks and deeper down where we find our party this cold week.

The cold, blue hues used as an overlap for the map reminds me of some winter days when I was younger, much younger, moving about the forests and walls of endless trees as I walked the properties my family owned. Cold is a welcome friend for me so I wanted to capture that feeling, an image where you look at it and go “yeah, that looks cold” the kind of picture that makes people in warmer climates reach for an additional blanket or turn on that heater.

Despite not being exactly as I want it to be I think its still gives the feeling for the party – that rocky, worn down path with bits of snow covering to cold stone with embarkments either side of the road with vegetation and trees where we may find one or more spirit folk lurking waiting for the party to walk to close.

Thanks for joining me for another art-heavy night that I hope leaves you feeling a bit colder. As I always say don’t forget to come back tomorrow for fight night! where we look at perhaps what goes bump in the night, or what at least the mountains feed on when the sun gets lower on the horizon as we build up for next week – so don’t forget to not miss a day and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Ice spire

Welcome to Wednesday where we look at twists and turns that our party will encounter evidence on that they are not alone in the ranges and that time is of the essence in travelling through the valley when creatures are killed for pleasure, not food.

Threaded

The dusting of snow between the ranges was miraculously thin on the frozen mud of the road yet it piled up next to the rocky cliffs and trees either side of the road where the wagon squelched behind an anxious draft horse.

The weather had turned slightly to the worse, small flurries of snow had begun to drift down upon the wagon but it it wasn’t the weather that was cause for concern, the sheer number of tracks from spirit folk and the creatures that called this valley and mountain ranges home were the source of growing concern. It was beginning to be unusual to see a section of snow that didn’t have discarded cloth, foot prints or even bones of a meal and they all seemed to be heading in the same direction. The trees offered some protection from the snow regardless and while the party wasn’t used to this level of snow and cold but the wagon was kitted with double walls and a level of cloth and material on the inside that made the inside comfortable if not cosy.

The old grey stallion whinnied and the wagon came to a stop as the horse spooked and started to retreat backwards causing the wagon to lurch before the wheels met snow by the side of the road and stop abruptly. “It may take me some time for me to be able to convince this old thing to move forward. But what ever is spooking it isn’t far from here and I’d rather be prepared than having to make a quick exit from this valley.” Jason called as he tried to pull the horse into line.

Oni, ogres, Nat’s and even bears the size of the wagon they travelled in lay skewered on the ice, pushed on with enough force to pierce even the stone-like hide of the Nat.

“I have known some of the creatures of the ranges to be vicious but to be cruel like this is another level. We can make it through the ranges today if we hurry but it will get dark early inside these ice covered walls so we can’t dally any more.” he urged as he ushered them into the back of the wagon to join Kuang, Kyoko and Hana. “Hold on, we won’t be slowing down for some time and I pray that the old horse makes it.”

Well another twist Wednesday has come and this week we have revealed a grisly scene where something or someone has slaughtered creatures, animals and the spirit folk (such as Nat’s and Oni) and strung them up like shrike impaling lizards, insect and small mammals on thorns.

Not revealing the true face of the opponent is something I am not quite sure on yet, but so far having to describe what it does, elude to it but not yet reveal it completely is something I am enjoying but wondering if its having the desired effect. What do you think?

Thanks for joining me tonight and for reading the shrike-inspired part of this adventure. Don’t forget that if you want to name the village the party visited leave a comment below and if I like it I will name the village after your suggestion and to do so make sure to come back daily to keep up to date on the progress we make, and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,
