Sunken Crops

Tonight we investigate the Sunken crops of a sleepy village called Solbrook as our party is the first, mostly, to the scene of a large sinkhole that devoured crops and revealed a buried structure.

So grab a coffee, an extra one hundred foot of rope as we dive into tonight’s adventure!

The quiet village of Solbrook is rocketed as a large sinkhole is revealed in the middle of their largest crops revealing a statue and some form of building in a cavern. What lies beneath will create history for the once-sleepy village as adventurers, scholars and more come to investigate the find and what lies beneath the fertile soil.

But something dwells deeper within the buildings, something has been growing, feeding for longer than anyone alive could possibly remember. And it’s always hungry.

The party could see the crowds and small tent-city that had sprung up just outside of Solbrook from the road. News and rumours had spread of the temple, or city, or something found buried beneath Solbrook rapidly and people had come for work, adventure and the chance to gain something.

Scholars had arrived in droves to look at the statue that was a hundred feet tall and unlike anything found to date. Workers had come to clean out the area and to make shelters, stores and more outside of the town to cope with the increase in people visiting the farming village. And lastly adventurers, much like the party themselves, had arrived with their senses of adventure and the prospect of wealth tantalisingly just at the end of a rope ladder beneath the surface of the crop of wheat that had been swallowed up.

The small village consisting of tent that sprung up near the sink hole had just about everything you could want. A series of tents in an enclosed wall operated like an Inn where the price to stay was cheap enough that anyone with coin could stay a few weeks easily. Tents filled with tables and laden with goods sold nearly anything an adventurer, scholar or worker could want or need when dealing with the sinkhole and beyond and there was even a gathering of tents that exclusively sold food and drink.

But the party were drawn to a large red tent, the Scholars had called for aid to push through the first door and beyond from seasoned adventurers as they believed they would need help. To answer the call would initially pay well and even beyond that they would likely have ongoing employment if they wished to help further – they just had to prove themselves useful to the scholars.

Derja’s Shadow

Now for the next Zine of the year I present, in single page zine format, Derja’s Shadow. I still believe that these provide DMs a lot more freedom to tinker with it how they want and open up the adventures to be more free formed and flowing than the larger booklet zines.

There is references to the blog nights which are D&D centric but it can easily use the adversary stat-blocks highlighted in Friday nights post if you’re running Daggerheart. As always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for many of my D&D creatures.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, Derja’s Shadow, and that all your rolls are made with advantage.

The party arrived in Miran after a long day of travel, drawn by the reputation of the Magus College. After settling in at the Little Bullette inn, they ventured through the crowded streets, weaving between busy merchants and wary pickpockets. The city pulsed with life, but also held an undercurrent of tension that grew stronger as they neared the College. Though famed for magical study, the institution resembled a sprawling library more than an academy, its towering halls sheltering knowledge as well as mystery. At the imposing darksteel gates, the bustle of the city faded, replaced by small groups of adventurers and watchful guards. It was clear that Miran had become a gathering point for those hunting answers, or hiding from danger.

Inside, the mood was heavier still. A tiefling mage and his companion, Sal, a battle-ready woman clad in chainmail, waited in line ahead of the party. After exchanging brief words, the tiefling departed down one hall in search of a book, leaving Sal chatting with the receptionist. Just minutes later, a cry of pain tore through the quiet, sending adventurers and guards racing toward the source. The party followed and found the tieflingโ€™s body, lifeless, twisted unnaturally, and separated from his glowing dagger, which now flickered only halfway with fading magic. The guards arrived and began their questioning. Sal, shaken but composed, explained that she had only just separated from Tamiel. Yet the grim scene and anxious whispers confirmed a truth that weighed on all of them: something, or someone, was hunting mages in Miran.

When Sal regained her composure, she met with the party to explain Tamielโ€™s dagger and their purpose in the city. The blade, dimmed now, had been gifted by a nighthag and was said to hold protective enchantments. Tamiel had come to Miran determined to investigate the mage killings. Sal, skilled with steel, had intended to back him up. But while Tamiel searched for a particular book, Sal had been distracted, caught in conversation with the receptionist. Tamiel, proud and impatient, pressed on alone. He hated to be wrong and had rushed toward whatever clue he believed might solve the mystery. Sal blamed herself for not noticing sooner.

She described trying to reach Tamiel with their sending stones, but when there was no reply, panic had set in. She ran through dim corridors, where the magical light globes had shattered and shadows crowded the floor. It wasnโ€™t until she reached the far side of the hallway that she saw Tamiel lying motionless. Sal stood with the party now, her sorrow clear in her voice and posture. Her tall frame and strong features made her seem unshakable, yet the pain in her eyes betrayed the weight of her loss. As they listened, Sal recalled a detail that struck her, how the shadows had seemed unnatural, heavy, and deliberate, almost watching her as she approached the body.

With Salโ€™s help, the party tracked down Jake, the receptionist, who hadnโ€™t returned to work since the incident. Outside his modest quarters, they heard him muttering nervously to himself before he opened the door. Jake looked startled and embarrassed but quickly straightened up and invited them in. He confessed that the recent killings had frightened him and claimed he was simply taking time off to avoid being next. He asked them not to tell the College he had been skipping his duties and promised to share what little he knew about Tamielโ€™s request.

Jake explained that the mage deaths had spread through all corners of the city, from shadowy alleys and taverns to crowded marketplaces and now, even within the College itself. Tamiel, he said, had been researching the ruined City of Derja and had asked Jake where to find records on the place. That was the last time he saw Tamiel. Jake had no further information but did ask the party to pass on his apologies to Sal. Though shaken, Jakeโ€™s account gave the party a new lead and suggested the threat was growing closer and far more unpredictable.

The party returned to the College and retraced Tamielโ€™s final steps. In the dim section of the library, they discovered the book Tamiel had sought, The City of Derja. Inside its worn pages were journal entries by scholars who had explored the ruins. They told of a sealed vault hidden deep within Derja, not protected by magic, but by intricate mechanical locks. Dwarves and gnomes had worked to open it, revealing a chamber lined with dark metal that disrupted magical ability. Mages inside could no longer connect to the weave. Carved runes and aged murals told the story of a city once great, now destroyed by a whirlwind that tore through its people, buildings, and land.

Derja had been a centre of magical brilliance, rivalled only by high elven cities of old. Now it stood as a grave to magic itself. At the vaultโ€™s heart sat a large vase made from the same dark metal, its surface corroded and fractured over time. The final journal entries grew grim. After removing the artefact from the vault, those involved began to vanish. Mages reported being haunted by malevolent spirits. Eventually, many were found dead with their enchanted belongings lying lifeless beside them. The curse, it seemed, hunted those who carried Derjaโ€™s secrets and defied its silence. The scholars urged that the city be left untouched, its legacy protected, and its wrath feared.

Derja’s Curse

Tonight we have the outcome of Derja’s curse with these environment and adversary stat blocks for the extra detail Saturday additional post.

So sit back, grab a coffee or other hot beverage and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Derja’s Curse

529SaDeCu

The library itself has become the house to a curse, which we explored last night in Shadows and Magic eaters, and tonight we reveal the environment that helps to store, conceal and house cursed objects and the creatures that come with them. We have two Environments with Cursed Library giving an ability for the PCs to find the information they seek but also, we have darkness at every corner which looks to create smaller adversaries that stalk, hunt and impede the party at every turn.

However Shadows are not particularly powerful especially for a Tier 3 encounter so the party should find these are more nuisances rather than dangers that they have to face. Derja’s curse makes them more threatening with the ability to spend a fear to impose disadvantage on attacks when magic damage is used as the relics designed to repel and restrict the use of magic react to their abilities. This can find the party having to apply different tactics or look at creative ways to avoid the curse if possible.

It also beefs up the adversaries for this encounter substantially but not too much, I hope.

The party waited for the door to open as patiently as they could while listening to someone obviously up to something. With the help of Sal they were able to locate the room that Jake lodged at. He hadn’t shown up to work that day due to the apparent stress that had overwhelmed him after Tamiels murder.

But unfortunately he was the last and only person to know what the tiefling mage was looking for. As they heard a quivering voice from the other side ‘Jussst one moment. Oh why me, be strong Jake. Murderers don’t knock on doors’. The man that answered the door looked a sad mixture of confused and caught mid performance. Glancing around and out the door he straightened up and cleared his throat.

‘Sorry I thought you may have been from the Magus College. What can I do for you?’ he added instantly sounding recovered from what ever had over taken him from before. As the party explained how they found him, why they did and such the realisation of where they looked familiar dawned on him. ‘Look, I will tell you what I know but don’t tell the magus college folk about this. I just needed some time off and thought it was a good chance to take time off with the murderer now in the college itself.’

Inviting the party into his small room he closed the door behind them. ‘Ever since magic using folk started dying across the city they have had a strong focus on stopping what causing it. The first deaths started in ally ways, in a few inns and taverns and such. But then middle of market places where the body was found amongst tents and carts. Now in the middle of a busy library where there were no witnesses. You know it kinda freaks me out.’ he said as he sat and sipped on tea.

After pausing for a bit and listening to the party he added. ‘About the tiefling. He wanted to know where he could find information on the City of Derja. So that’s where he was as we have a book about the ruined city. That’s all I know and unless Sal has more information then that’s all I have sadly.’ he paused before adding. ‘Oh, if you do see Sal. Tell her I’m sorry but let her know I was helpful in your investigations yeah?’

The party arrived back inside the Magus College and followed the trail back to where they had found the body of Tamiel. Scanning through the books they eventually found what they were looking for ‘The City of Derja‘. Flicking through the pages where there was more lights they came across what appeared to be a series of journal entries form the scholars that investigated the ruins. Deeper inside the city itself they came across a sealed vault that was mechanically not magically sealed.

After employing dwarves and gnomes to investigate its artifice they were able to open the door and reveal what was inside. The walls were lined with a dark metal and those few people who were mages found themselves unable to conjure spells or connect to the weave itself. The walls to the small chamber were lined with runes and imaged depicting the rise of the city but also the fall, a great whirlwind appearing to rip down building, people and even the earth itself.

Derja was rumoured to be one of the most magically gifted cities, civilisations even, only second to some of the high elven ones during its time but what they had discovered as a place with little to no traces of magic. In the centre of the room was a large vase that was sketched as being made from some kind of dark metal but time had seen it corrode and crumble in sections.

The next few pages described removing it from the room and the strange disappearances, a haunting of the city that preyed upon the members of the scholar team and the mages that guarded them. A curse of the city that targeted those who stole its treasure and flaunted their magic in a place that as now stripped bare from it. The journal entry changed hand writing for the last few pages and explained that any one who had any form of connection to magic had been found dead, still and any of their trinkets, totems, wands, rings, staffs or anything that was enchanted was found near the body of the mage, no longer enchanted and as still as the mage that would have wielded it.

The journal mentions that the artefact was to be taken to the nearest city for study and safe keeping but that the city of Derja was to be treated as a cursed place due to the malevolent spirits that hunted mages for disturbing its treasure.

Sal Wethridge

Sal Wethridge is at a loss. She has lost her companion who trusted that she had his back and now without any evidence or suspects she is stuck. However tonight the party discover more, in plain view of where the tiefling was found dead.

Sal Wethridge

Sal eventually had calmed down after the healers had examined the body of her companion, finding nothing that would have caused their death. The party had revealed the dagger that had half of it stop glimmering with magic which had taken Sal a few minutes to realise it belonged to her friend.

‘Tamiel always bragged about his dagger. Something about being blessed by a nighthag. We were coming to Miran to help the city look for its mage killer. We thought that us two would be able to handle it as Tamiel knew magic and I am rather good with a sword and can handle myself in a fight against foes both magical and mundane. Normally…’ she said as the gloom settled back over the top of her.

‘That’s why he was in that stupid isle looking for a stupid book that he thought may have held the secrets to what was happening. He hated being wrong and got embarrassed by Jake, the man at the reception, was quick to tell Tamiel where to find what he was after. I wasn’t paying attention though as I was distracted…’ she added as the sound of remorse and regret made her voice crackle.

‘As soon as I stopped talking to Jake I tried reaching out to Tamiel via our sending stones and when it didn’t work I rushed to where I thought he would be. Life less in shadow. Those stupid drifting globes of light had shattered on the ground and so it took me a moment to see him lying there.’

The party took a few moments more to talk to the tall woman, her shoulder length blonde hair resting against her armour and while she wasn’t a fine featured woman her proud features and imposing feature didn’t match the look of desperation nor the sullen look in her eyes.

Finding Jake and working back from where Tamiel had been investigating or looking for something seemed like the next best step but for now they waited with Sal and tried to see if she would remember anything else. The only thing coming to her mind was how the shadows had looked upon the body of her friend as she rounded the corner.

Without a Trace

This week we start off with a series of impossible deaths where the murderer disappeared without a trace. That is until the party found a clue at the scene of the crime.

So grab a coffee and your investigation gear as we start another murder mystery in tonight’s adventure!

The sight of a powerful mage’s body normally comes with other evidence of their dying moments. Scorch marks, shattered stone, debris and worse which makes people wonder what happened here. But when a series of bodies of powerful mages appears without anything – no destruction nor damage nor arcane collateral at those investigating are left in pure wonderment.

That is until a party of adventurers stumbles across evidence. Now there is a race against the clock to find what it means before they too end up like the dead mages.

Without a Trace – Created in WordPress.

The party had spent most of the day travelling to the City of Miran to visit the Magus College. Having secured lodgings at the Little Bullette inn they braved the crowds of the streets and head towards the large building. The Magus College was more library than a place to learn magic however many famously strong mages who had made their name in adventuring parties called it home.

Managing to find the rhythm of moving through the crowded streets and avoiding pickpockets and dodgy merchants hawking wares that were nearly good enough to pass off as quality products they found themselves at the large darksteel metal gates. There was significantly less people here and the only people walking around seemed to be guards or small groups consisting of armed warriors and a mage. Considering this was a hub for people like them who were trying to find information to aid them in their job or quest.

However, there was a distinct anxious energy through the air and as they walked through the guards watched them suspiciously as they entered the door that led into the library. Entering the small entrance hall there was a few people ahead of them. A tiefling just in front of them watched them approach as he held the handle of a small blade which had a simple loop of leather for its sheath. The blade faintly glowed green as it lay in its sheath while he looked around his comrade, a human woman dressed in chainmail, spoke in quiet whispers to the man behind the desk who returned the hushed whispers back causing the tiefling to roll his eyes.

‘Sal, I’ll be looking for the book. Don’t take too long.’ the tiefling said as he walked off. The human woman waved in recognition of her companion.

‘Yeah. I’ll be there in a sec, I just have an important piece of information to get,’ she added. ‘now when do you get off work?’

After the man behind the counter grinned goofily and told the warrior when he finished work the warrior walked off in search of his companion. As the party stood in front of the love-eyed receptionist a cry of anguish and pain echoed out from the left. Their question forgotten the party raced towards the noise along with dozens of other adventurers and guards and came across the woman from a few moments ago kneeling in front of a lifeless body.

The tiefling from before lay lifeless, contorted on his back with his blade a few feet away but out of his reach. As the guards came through and made way the party were shoved to the side nearest the dagger. As they moved around the blade careful not to nudge or disturb the scene they noticed that the blade has stopped shining closest to the mage in a near-perfect straight line where the magic seemed to no longer glow from the side of the dagger closest to the mage.

‘Not again. Right who found the body and why were you not with them?’ a stern looking man with a bristly moustache said looking around. ‘I assume you are this mages companion?’ he said towards the visibly distraught human.

‘I was not long after them. A few moments is all. He has always been impatient but I didn’t think it would cost him his life.’ she replied.

‘Not when there’s something killing mages on the lose in the city…’ one of the other guards added before his face turned grim. ‘So did anyone see or notice anything unusual?’ the man said looking towards the group of people that had gathered at the scene.

The Silver Ring Tavern had been brimming with cheer and comfort. Music played, patrons danced, meals were served, and drinks flowed freely. The adventuring party was enjoying a well-earned pause in their journey while soaking in the lively atmosphere. The back booth, occupied by stylish merchants throwing around gold, added to the merriment. That warmth vanished instantly when six furious dwarves stormed through the door, tattoos on their hands marking them as members of the Trusted Axe Cartel.

One younger dwarf shouted loud enough to quiet the entire room, demanding the whereabouts of Jeb and Tarnius, two merchants accused of passing off low-quality gear. As confusion spread, the dwarves searched for answers while the eldest among them paid the barkeep and approached quietly. A calmer dwarf engaged the party with questions about the missing merchants and explained that their guild had delivered finely crafted weapons and armour, yet had been accused of sending faulty goods. Garmanel, the cartelโ€™s leader, arrived with tankards and offered a proposition. He believed the adventurers might uncover who had sabotaged the deal and recover their reputation.

The Cartelโ€™s tale was troubling. Their contract with Jeb and Tarnius had been solid until someone swapped their dwarven wares with inferior items, clearly made by inexperienced human hands. Known for their honour and craftsmanship, the cartel was humiliated and determined to uncover the truth. Garmanel and his ward Gondanel appealed to the party for help. In return, they offered not only gold but a bond of trust and future support that would be worth more than coin.

Drinks helped ease the tension as Garmanel bought a round for the tavern, and Garabek – the fiery dwarf, left to chase a lead. The party now faced a choice: step into this growing conflict for honour and reward, or walk away and leave the mystery unresolved. The promise of dwarven loyalty was tempting, especially given the Cartelโ€™s influence and steadfast nature.

Their first clue led them to a bustling marketplace thick with noise and smells. After navigating the chaos, they found a vendor selling dwarven goods. A mercenary elf tried to interfere, but the party managed to speak with the merchant, who hinted at access to more of the valuable equipment. He invited them to return at sunset when he could show them his best stock.

As the sun fell, the merchant led them to a warehouse where they encountered a dozen armed traders and likely more hidden away. He revealed that his group had taken advantage of careless deals to acquire high-quality gear. But when one man spotted the adventurers and recognized them from the Silver Ring Tavern, panic swept through the warehouse. The tone shifted instantly. What had begun as a quiet lead now felt more like a trap, one bound to unravel deeper secrets.

The smell and sounds of the market place were overwhelming at first as the clash between goods raged on. Carts selling produce, stalls selling cooked food and the smell of hot iron mixed together to a confusing mix that left the party feeling heady. However, the market sprawled before them and after just a few moments they spotted a stall that interested one of them.

It didn’t take long for them to find another stall that sold something else of interest and soon they were getting the information they were after. There was a merchant at the market that was selling dwarven goods and despite the mercenary of the elf they asked attempting to intervene between the party and the baker who offered the information for a handful of gold.
