The Snowman of Snowtown

Welcome to the twenty fourth night of Dice-ember where tonight we look at the final plug for our adventure, The Snowman of Snowtown. As tomorrow is Christmas and next week I’ll look to wrap up the final product tonight will, more or less, be the final post for Dice-ember 2022. So sit back, enjoy a coffee and read on.

The Snowman of Snowtown

251SaDiEm24

A frigid breeze blasts down from the Gritch mountains and brings with it the deep rhythmic singing of the goliaths that call the mountains home. The town of Snowman sits amongst these large mountains, surrounded by wooded forest and it once was a bustling agricultural town that supplied stone and food to cities further south. That was before the accident that caused the quarry to close and now the town is on the brink of collapse with only the shipments of food and livestock keeping the town going.

But the shipments from Snowtown have stopped and rumours of the forests nearby being haunted by malevolent spirits have come instead. The one city that is unwavering in their support of Snowtown (and the animals and goods that the town supplies) has requested aid from local adventurers to go and check on Snowtown and see if they require assistance.

Meanwhile a young enchantress deals with the loss of her girlhood crush, the rejection and persecution by a narrowminded community and the offer to work for a madman. It must be the crazy season.

Thanks for joining me tonight. With the final parts of the Snowtown adventure coming together I want to thank those who have visited and who have supported this little endeavour of mine for this past year and a bit. Next year I will change things up again to bring more one-shot content and go back to what the true intention of this blog is. But before we get to that I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and holiday season. I hope you all get to spend some time relaxing and celebrating with those near and dear. And lastly don’t forget to roll with advantage, we never know when we may need it,

Preparation for greatness

Tonight as we continue on this adventure I find myself at a crossroads. Wanting to explore more of the mad-mage Albazhar as well as looking into the enchantress who is in preparation for greatness. What I want to follow up with tonight is the trigger point of what takes the enchantress from helping the village to enslaving it. So sit back, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy!

Preparation for greatness

Mark Kenderson had approached me today to apologise for how he had treated me the other week. He was Charming and polite and everything that drew me to him in the first place. After buying me a few pints and a meal he asked if he could come visit me tonight. I am so excited. He is the son of the leader of the town and if I can convince him that my creations are a boon for the village then the village will follow suit.

It’s only a few hours until dark, when he agreed he would come, so I better perfect my snowman and have it ready to be presentable. Today is the turning point, mark my words Snowtown will be on the map and we wont have to worry about unreliable mercenaries or labourers ever again!

Later

I was so foolish… Mark did show up but so did his buddies. They had no interest in my creations but had came with violence in their eyes. Mark tried to stop them from kicking in my door and for the first time in my life I regretted the distance my house was from the rest of the town. As the door crashed down the thugs pushed Mark down and stormed through. He pleaded for them to stop. He said he only wanted the creations smashed but didn’t want any harm to come to me. His companions thought otherwise.

The Snowman was so fast. It must have realised that they had ill content and the orders to protect the village took over. It was horrific. It was terrible. It was a work of perfection. The Snowman rolled over them, impaling them with its hardened wooden talons and ripped them apart. After the violence was over there was only three corpses on the ground. Mark was horrified and went to attack the Snowman. I tried to stop the snowman but it happened so fast and I was so slow.

Mark was killed. But I think I can save him. This book talks of more advanced rituals to bind flesh to constructs. I think I can use what the book teaches on flesh golems to save Mark. But I will need space and time. I think the Snowman and the others of its kind can help. I just hope that I am not too late as I move the rest of my worktable to the quarry where I have some guardians waiting on their cores.

Thanks for joining me tonight as we look at the trigger point for Aster, our young enchantress, moving out of the village in the days leading up to the party’s arrival. This sets the scene for the time to come and gives a bit of an insight into the final encounter with the enchantress and her frosty constructs in Snowtown. Don’t forget to come back next week and, as always don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Sudden Visitor

Tonight we find ourselves approaching the last week of Dice-ember. Tonight we look towards our young enchantress trying to deal with sudden visitor and what it may mean for her.

Sudden Visitor

250SaDiEm17

As she walked around her little house in Snowtown the enchantress studied the notebook she had begun to learn advanced enchanting with. There was something she was missing. The constructs she had made were volatile and were prone to falling apart and the magic unravelling as quickly as she had weaved it. The twigs for a skeleton and compressed snow made for strong and durable bodies however the advanced magic she was trying to wield was causing the issue.

A cup on the table wobbled and fell over which caused her to jump. Startled she placed a hand on a small knife she held under her robes, normally used for enchanting, and looked around the small room that was her kitchen and workshop. The front door was slightly ajar which she was sure she had closed before. The cold frigid wind blustered in which threatened to extinguish her candles so, not seeing anything immediately she closed the door, barred it and went to go re-ignite some candles that had spluttered out.

‘Before you freak out can you put down the knife please?’ a small voice asked from near her table. She whirled around and drew her knife looking for the source of the voice. ‘I have a message – I have a message!’ the voice shrieked, a high nasally voice that made her immediately think it was a Goblin.

Looking over the table she spied a goblin that was dressed in a humble blue robe, with no weapons. ‘What do you want Goblin and spit it out’ she hissed at the goblin. She began to mutter a spell under her breath to increase her defences.

‘My master hopes you like his book but wants to ask what you are using as a core?’ the Goblin asked nervously as it moved towards the wall.

‘The core?’ the enchantress asked perplexed. A moment later and it occurred to her. More advanced constructs have a core that stores residual or reserve magical energy. This helps to stabilise the construct and make it more reliable. Ignoring the goblin she rummaged through her workbench before finding a lump of coal. Something that she hadn’t needed that day to start her fire but something that could retain magical energy.

This is the thing. As long as she buried it deep enough in the construct the snow and wood should be able to keep it safe and it should stabilise her creations.

The goblin smiled and quietly slipped out a window before being abruptly summoned back to its masters dimension.

Another night of Dice-ember down and another part of the overall story coming together. Just one more week left and by this time next weekend the adventure will be over!. So don’t forget to come back each day this coming week, and tomorrow, to stay up to date on the adventure. And, as always don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Experiment

Welcome to the eleventh day of dice-ember where tonight we look at Albazhar’s notes on the experiment. What is the experiment I hear you ask? Well for those with unlimited time, power and wealth like the mad mage Albazhar you can find yourselves in situations where you need help. In this instance Albazhar deems his other work too important to dedicate time to investigate perfecting constructs. So he leaves does what any mage would do. He gets someone else to test it for him.

The Experiment

249SuDiEm11

“After leaving the notebook I have noticed sudden changes in the constructs that the young enchantress is producing. The initial constructs that were created were rudimentary and very basic. The new ones after she had some help are more advanced, more durable and stronger.” Albazhar looked over at the goblin ‘helper’ who was hastily jotting down his dictation with an orange quill. “The observations on the snowman concluded that there is some work to be done, but, they don’t appear to be as hostile or aggressive as they could be. I assume that the Enchantress has deliberately constructed them this way but for what purpose. Power serves to elevate the craft of one mage above others so that others in turn try to elevate themselves. It is the way of the world to progress in this sway and it betters the craft.” he paused with thought as he looked at the other two specimens in his observation dimension.

“The next constructs that the young enchantress has produced are of different ilk. The small, weak ball like ones seem to weak for combat however they are able to reform their constructed substance to better suit the purpose at hand. Able to turn body mass into limbs for binding and grabbing. These could be good as scouts or as guards due to their inconspicuous nature.”

Nearing perfection

Albazhar then moved onto the next construct. “The one on the other hand is a very different specimen. This is built for combat. It’s large limbs, solid ice natural weapons and aggression are akin to many of my own. It find it fascinating the rate this young enchantress hones her craft and improves as she goes. She has absorbed the knowledge that I have produces in front of her at such a rapid rate that I doubt it will be long until she has produced more advanced constructs.”

With a wave of his hand he closed the viewing portal to the pocket dimension which held the snow constructs. He had more research of his own to do and the experiment with this enchantress was going well He was even considering extending an invitation to her to be an apprentice. Or at least someone he can study to see if she could be of use to him.

Thanks for joining me tonight to look a bit further into the notes and observations of Albazhar. This coming week will be another big one for us so don’t forget to come back each day this week. And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Fateful Discovery

Good evening and welcome to our second weekend update which looks at the enchantress who is responsible for the creations and trouble in Snowtown. Tonight is the 10th day of dice-ember and we look at a fateful discovery which changes everything and sets the plans truly in motion for our enchantress. So sit back, grab a nice hot coffee and let’s roll on with it!

Fateful Discovery

249SaDiEm10

I don’t have much time. When looking at the goods that Penn has brought in from the larger cities I noticed something out of the ordinary. A tome, well a notebook to be exact but the cover had glyphs and runes etched into it. For a few copper coins I managed to convince Penn that it wasn’t anything special and took it back to my hut. The notebook is filled with diagrams, sigils and wards that perfect and constructs. This book must belong to the most powerful enchanter to ever live!

After decoding the warding glyph I was able to get into the book itself and see if for what it really is. My twig constructs now will be stronger and I can prove to the townspeople that my creations can be useful. It also has instructions on how to shape and construct golems. This is something that I will have to look into later but for now I need to find some material that is plentiful, easy to work with and can be durable. If these are meant to help the villagers move vegetables, building supplies and even animals.

As I was reading this and staring at the Gritch mountains I had a thought. Snow. It’s malleable, its readily available and it can be both strong and able to form a variety of shapes.

Tomorrow I will go into town and see if they will listen to me now. Surely with this knowledge and the benefit it can bring to the townsfolk they wont reject me again.

Thanks for joining me tonight. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for our mad wizards notes on all thigs magical or odd and, as always don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Notes on the Snowman

Another night has come around and tonight we are looking at Albazhar’s notes on the Snowman. That’s right the mad-scientist mage is back this Dice-ember and he is bringing with him more study and notes on the curiosities we find our selves surrounded by. So without any further waiting let’s get on with tonight’s write-up so sit back, grab a drink and read on!

Notes on the Snowman

248SuDiEm4

“The Snowman are crude, unintelligent and fragile. However as I watch them move around the frozen environment from where they are constructed in I find myself remembering the first constructs I made. They were vastly superior but there is a boyish charm to these automations that I brings back fond memories” The mage put his quill down and watched the creature moving through the snow covered field.

As it moved by rolling its lower orb-like torso component it was looking around. It was searching the white, greens and browns for something. As its head rotated the cruel mockery of a smile was revealed, little stones dotted its mouth like cruel teeth. Albazhar grinned as he took further notes on the Snowman.

“It’s body is constructed of compacted snow and twigs to bind them together. When it stands still its almost indistinguishable from other snowmen that children and adults create in the colder months. Its several large snowballs can move independently and as such it can be frighteningly fast and nimble.” The mage clicked its fingers and one of his own creations, a flesh golem, dragged a goblin servant, who protested with high pitched squeals, towards the portal that led to the pocket dimension.

Hunting

As soon as the green flesh of the goblin hit the white snow the head of the snowman swivelled in the direction of the creature. Slowly it began to roll towards the goblin. The goblin had scurried behind a log and was currently crawling towards a tree to climb. The snowman slowly edged in the general direction of the creature silently. It paused occasionally for minutes to look like an inanimate object.

Albazhar took notes, his hand a blur with his owlbear quill as he watched the moment the snowman came within sixty feet. Instantly the head stopped swivelling and faced the goblins position. Its constructed hands moved forward, one large club like branch and one that had talon like twigs that stretched out towards its prey. The goblin squealed and raced towards the tree that was twenty feet away. The Snowman shocked the mage as it moved with such pace that it bet the goblin to the tree. The moment before it ripped the screaming humanoid apart the mage snapped his fingers and a wall of fire appeared between the snowman and the goblin.

The snowman paused before hastily moving in the opposite direction of the fire, its head swivelling as it searched for prey away from the fire. “Interesting. The creation of this automation looks to have given it some degree of limited blindsight. It dreads fire, which is no surprise based on its construction of ice that melts and twigs that burn. However it is surprisingly fast and vicious. Perhaps I can improve upon this creation with a new model.” he jotted down his notes next to the arcane glyphs and phrases in the book.

“More research to be done.” the mage clicked his fingers to get the flesh golems attention. “Retrieve the goblin for me. I need it for another set of tests”.

I am glad that Albazhar has returned. A long lasting wizard and figurehead of general wrong-ness in my adventures he has returned for Dice-ember again. Don’t forget to come back this week as we expand upon the adventure. Also, as usual, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Catalyst

Hello and once again good evening all; welcome to the the third post of Dice-ember and tonight we have a look at our antagonist for this month. Tonight we look at the Animators Journal Catalyst – the triggering event that sets things into motion.

So sit back, grab a drink and read on!

I was weeping the moment I closed the door behind me. This wasn’t the first time I have been ignored or scorned by the stupid residents of the sleepy town of Snowtown but this time it hurt more. But they will listen. My craft takes what is most abundant in this stupid area and makes it useful. I have the power to make their very hills alive with creatures they can control. With servants and things that can help them toil the fields, hunt game and even expand their village. But they laugh. Oh perhaps the little wooden figures I have shown them aren’t as impressive but my dolls are still useful.

These villages don’t have the vision that they need to survive in this world. What’s to make matters worse is that Mark Kenderson rejected my affections. After I proclaim my attractions to him in private and he seemingly was interested; Well that’s why the journal entry is missing from yesterday… He calls me a harlot and gets me thrown from the town square.

I need this. I can’t live poor any more. These villages, these stupid residents of Snowtown will need me. Mark my words the moment someone realises the gold mine they are living around and ignoring they will be attacked. They will come running and begging for me to aid them. Oh Journal, then I can save them.

Perhaps they just need a real demonstration. I will ready the Twigmen for tomorrow and go make a proper demonstration. Maybe after that they will listen to me.

Another night, another Dice-ember post. Tonight we looked into a page from the Animators Journal and the catalyst of this months adventure. Tomorrow we will bring back an old friend to give more insight into the situation, one that visited this time last year, and from there on we grow and shape this adventure. So don’t forget to come back each day of Dice-ember and I will see you tomorrow night… Oh and don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The End of Shadow

Tonight as we head further closer towards the conclusion of this yearly adventure with The Defence of the Wall. This month we have a level 10 adventure and at the end of this adventure we will be wrapping up the 11 month campaign..

As with usual Pages 1, 2 and 3 are content pages, the description, flow, random tables, etc. and such that you’ve previously seen.
Page 4 contains all NPCs and portraits to help the DM describe them and a bit about them to help play them out.
Page 5 will be stat blocks and map(s) – all that D&D encounter goodness that you want.

Now I will assume you have read the entire post which has had some bits modified over the months content. Now including the original content, and some bits added this is a smaller than normal length, only just making 7101! words long. I really do appreciate the time you take to read through these end of month adventures.

All Maps were made in Inkarnate using their Pro license, Art was created in Artbreeder and the statblocks were created in Tetra-cube AND the balancing of encounters is a mixture of experience and the guides found at Kobold Fight Club.

Don’t forget to come back next week and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Part 1 – Pursuit of the Oni – 244MoPuOTOn

With the retreat of the Oni and the cracking open of the mountains peak the party woke up feeling refreshed. After the defeat of the ice queen and defence of the wall against her magic the wall guard offered them the best room and comforts available to them. Four walls and a bed each.

In the morning the party emerged to find the wall quiet. The land beyond the wall was even more so with only the occasional movement at a forward base camp the shadows minions had on the ridge further towards The Shadows Throne. The oni and their slaves, the Butatล, were the only things that could be seen as left over from the battlefield. The Spirit folk and other creatures that had been fighting the party and the wall guard had disappeared which gave the wall guard a day of repairs to the wall.

โ€œMessage from the General. Lord Toshio was found dead in his tent and his troops had surrendered. Apparently they have all claimed enchantment and enthrallment from the Yuki-onna and the warriors claim that Lord Toshio took his own life when he heard his wife had been killed.โ€ The messenger from the general recited to wall captain Hou and Kyoko. โ€œThe General has begun to detain and question the Toshio troops but Lord Harimasu has pardoned them on condition that they return to their homelands and begin to broker peace between the two families again. The general is on his way here to make an attack on the mountain. He will be here in two days however he needs what ever intel we can provide him.โ€

Kyoko frowned at this and asked for a map of the battlefield from what the scouts had been able to map out. โ€œThis camp of Oni. How defended is it?โ€

โ€œWe estimate that it would be a few dozen Oni, their leaders and slaves at a minimum. A frontal attack would go poorly but if there is another way that we can get the intel without risking more lives or leaving the wall undefended then I am all ears.โ€ Captain Hou replied as he pointed towards the map, indicating where he would suspect the intel to be kept.

โ€œSir, I volunteer to lead the operation to retrieve the intel.โ€ a voice said from the door. Wall Guardsmen Gin Seng stood there looking determined and fatigued. โ€œIโ€™ve grown up training to fight these creatures, to defend this wall. If I can help finish the war then I want to be involvedโ€ฆ Sir.โ€ he added with a moment hesitation.

โ€œThis mission is too crucial to leave it to one person. But too difficult and risky for a large scale attack.โ€ Kyoko said as she nodded to Gin Seng.

โ€œPerhaps these heroes from across the sea would be able to be of assistance once again?โ€ Kit Hou said as she smiled at the group. โ€œThey seemed to have saved half of Ryokughan already from the Oni and the Shadows influence so whatโ€™s one more mission?โ€

General Hou frowned at his daughter. โ€œWe put too much pressure on them. They have done enough. We can not rely on them forever and I fear that there may be worse things up in those hills which we just havenโ€™t seen yet.โ€

Kyoko smiled to the party. โ€œItโ€™s up to you. But we may need help distracting the main force if we were to send in a smaller group of wall guard to retrieve the intel. If you can help with either endeavour I would feel more confident in our success. The entire Oni force would know of you by now and surely they would want to have a chance at gaining the Shadows favour by attempting to best you in combat.โ€

244TuReSp

โ€œSir, I volunteer to lead the operation to retrieve the intel.โ€ His voice echoed in his mind as he looked over the battlefield. In four hours the sun would begin to set and he would begin the mission.

As he looked across the soldiers clearing the battlefield of their dead and piling the enemy corpses onto a pile he called out. โ€œPlace the spiritfolk in a separate pile. They dont burn their dead with the Oni. They think it an offence to the spirits who guide them.โ€ He said to Kit who, as punishment, was in charge of the bloody duty.

When the party and Kyoko looked his way he smiled sadly. โ€œI spent some time with the spiritfolk when I was youngโ€ฆ Some things you cant forget.โ€ He began. After a moment he explained further.

Gin was born the son of an alchemist, two infact. His parentโ€™s were non-conventional to say the least. His mother was a human but his father was one of the Spiritfolk who fell in love with the human woman who kept foraging in his forest.

Intially it was professional completion amongst each other. Finding the best reagents or herbs before the other could. But before long it blossomed into more.

Their son looked completely human except for a light covering of fur across his torso. His fathers goat legs, horns and tail were not gifted to his son but his reflexes and inhuman strength was. In the village they lived in the villagers quickly accepted Gin and his parents union. Especially when the quality of potions, charms and lotions were as high as his parents. However, happiness โ€“ like most things canโ€™t remain for long.

Halfway through Ginโ€™s tenth cycle an oni raiding party attacked his village. His parents locked him away and kept him hidden from the oni. But the Oni eventually found his parents. When they worked out that a human and spiritfolk were a could they made a sport out of their torture. It was ok display to the whole village yet Gin couldnโ€™t see his parents in their last moments. But he could hear them.

The following month he pledged himself into the service or the Harimasu military and dedicated his life to hunting Oni.

โ€œand Iโ€™ve been here ever since..โ€ he said with a touch if pride on his face.

โ€œsir! We have movement!โ€ A guard shouted as they hurried towards the wall.

โ€œHold! Itโ€™s the spirit folk to send off their dead.โ€ Gin called out to his fellow guardsmen. โ€œSee. Wait and watchโ€

A few moments passed and gradually all types of Spiritfolk appeared around the pile of their dead. Then slowly they formed a circle and began to sing and dance around their fallen. โ€œThey are celebrating the reunion of their parents, elders, children and friends and the spirit world. Where they believe they will hunt in the endless plains of their ancestors.โ€ He explained. โ€œThis will last until sunset at which point they will take the bodies away and burn them amongst the rest of their kin.โ€

Sure enough as the sun set the spiritfolk gathered their dead and singing out in joyous tones they carried them away from the battlefield and into the wilds beyond.

244WeThOnCa

Moving forward as the sun set Gin and those who followed behind him looked anxiously at the oni camp. โ€œWe will be there soon. Remember. If we get into trouble or the mission is at risk to fire a drift globe shaft into the air and aid will come.โ€ Gin said to the people standing nearby.

With agreement from those gathered he began to creep across the battlefield once more, signalling to stop periodically when something moved up ahead. Soon they were in the shadows of the tents. The setting sun and the shadows of the hills, mountain and nearby forest aided in their mission by creating pockets of shadow.

As the sun hit the edge of the mountain it plunged the camp into a mixture of amber glow from the setting sun and dark shadows. A few hundred feet away war horns trumpeted signalling that the second part of the plan had begun and that it was now or never to enter the camp.

The camp

As the oni and butatล left the camp in a hurry to meet the attackers head one. Slowly Gin and his entourage crept forward towards the main tent and waited for the oni captain to leave. As the captain stormed out with its armour buckled in tight a few slave Butatล followed in its wake. Taking this moment as the one to move Gin and his companions skulked forth once again and cut a hole in the canvas tent. Once the coast was deemed clear they entered silently.

None of those present realised the mistake that had been made until it was too late. A deep unholy growl rumbled forth from the shadows of the tent which threatened to bring the entire oni warband to the captains tent. A neat table lay in the centre of the room and contained a map, documents and scrolls. For their brutal use of weapons and mastery of war and savagery the oni were also expert tacticians.

As they stared at the multi limbed creature that confidently strode forth Gin prepared his drift globe shaft in a hand crossbow and prepared to state the words that would activate the arcane device. Looking between his compatriots and the creature he hoped that he didnโ€™t need to call for aid and that they would be able to deal with this threat quickly and quietly.

Environment and running the adventure

Gin He has five drift glob shafts which are small drift globes that are crafted into arrow or crossbow arrow/bolt shafts so that when they are shot they activate the moment they start to slow from being launched. This causes the bolt to slowly fall to the ground whilst the drift globe emits a light (of pre-determined colour).

If the party go with Gin they are in the tent when the creature reveals itself. Itโ€™s not a hard fight but as it falls it calls out loudly (unless silenced in some manner โ€“ Player and DMs decision).

If they donโ€™t the Party are with some other warriors fighting Oni, captains (a larger one in full plate with a large shield and battle axe) when they see several drift globes activate above the Oni Captains tent signalling Gin needs help.

The camp is built on an incline, rather sharply so. The tent are setup in a rather ingenuous way where they form a solid slab-foundation of wood, earth or even snow under the tents to level the tent.. to some degree.

The snowy hills pose an interesting mechanic for us. One way difficult terrain. Moving up the hill through the snow towards the camp is considered difficult terrain where as moving down isnโ€™t. Patches of snow pose a further hindrance as fighting in these areas would impose disadvantage to dexterity checks and strength contests (not checks) due to the slippery mud and shin-to-knee deep snow.

Encounter โ€“ The Bakegamoto

The Bakegamoto is a large dog like creature with a pushed in snout, large bat like ears and at least two large tusks jutting from their bottom jaw. The males are generally endowed with larger tusks and are a mixture of faun with a ruddy brown light mane that sprouts from the neck.

Females are generally lighter in colour without the mane but their tusks are shorter and generally thinner and sharper than the males. Trained bakegamoto are extremely obedient, strong and powerful. Normally kept by Oni captains or chieftains as a sign of power and strength they defend their master completely and obey orders to the best of their ability.

After the encounter:

The party move on for another day of walking before the wall is seen on the horizon. Although they have bested all that has been thrown at them so far they fear the worst still lies ahead of them.

Confronting the Shadow

Welcome to another end of week writeup where we follow our party as they travel through the Shadows Throne and end up confronting the Shadow. This week our party moves towards a hidden path into the shadows Throne, or the front door, and prepare to confront the being that has haunted them for almost a year now. So sit back, have a cup of coffee and let’s catch up on what was created this week.

Shadows Maze

246MoShMa

The party scurried forth towards the heart of the citadel. Or at least thatโ€™s what they had thought at least. The citadel was a tangled mess of halls and tunnels. The halls were obviously well crafted at some point but tunnels were dug between halls.

The halls were largely barren and empty as were the tunnels. Occasionally they would witness a screaming wounded oni being dragged down a hall before disappearing into a tunnel.. But otherwise the minions of the Shadow were frantic. Their movements, organisation and coordination were disorganised and hasty as if anxious or fearful. They did have an army at their front doorstep and their master was weak or so the vision had indicated so.

The party were running out of time but they were getting nowhere fast. They would have to find a way to the dark master soon before it was too late.

The very human cries and screams brought them to their present moment and without a moment to lose they took off down a well used hall. Eventually they began to notice a pattern for the tunnels as some lead to new rooms, hallways, dead ends of refuse pits. As they were approaching what smelt like a refuse pit they heard the muffled screams again in the tunnel. Venturing forth they found a well concealed secondary tunnel, unlike the others to date, perhaps, which lead to a large chamber with cages and cells built into the wall. A large ogre stood in the middle of the room brandishing a whip as it lashed out at humans pleading for mercy.

The ogre stopped flaying a middle aged man and looked up towards the party. The look of shock was quickly replaced by a stupid grin and malicious twinkle in its eye. The Shadow would have to wait.

Servants doubt

246TuSeDo

The diminutive creature watches as the party squared off against the ogre and a silent smile crossed its face. This could be it, the moment its freedom was bought.

Since it had watched its friends, comrades and children fight for the Shadow and fall for it. Since it has watched the same once revered master feast on their broken bodies and imbue itself with their dying life force. Enough was enough.

As the ogre strode forwards towards the party the shrieks from those still in cages got louder. Some wailed for saving, some cheered for the party but others cheered for blood. The ogre roared in approval at the terror and lust for blood as it brought its whip and cracked it over the head of the party as it waited for the first move.

Power Starved

246WePoSt

As the bodies piled up around the alter the power started to seep into the dark waters and flow into the cold slab of stone. Sitting atop the stone the Shadows Avatar sat in silence, power starved. A fragment of what its former self used to be and far from it needed to be and time was running out. In fact from the increase in wounded and dying Oni, Trolls, Butatล and captured slaves suggested that the light bringer, those chosen by the dragon were here.

The creature watched as the power gradually ebbed and flowed like waves as the ritual channelled the power within the dead and dying into its form. As the casualties piled up a gnawing concern rose in the creature. If these mortals were able to do this to its servants and chosen minions then is it enough? Was this meagre power that was being drawn from these husks enough?

There was a single option, a fail safe, that was available to the creature now. Modifying the ritual slightly small channels opened up in the ritual pool. Slowly the tainted waters began to spread and weave their way through the citadel, causing water to drip down upon all. If all went well then the creature wouldnโ€™t have to resort to it, but the thought of doing it anyway did cross its mind.

A sudden pang shot through the creature, one of its shadow-touched had just been killed. As the shadow-stuff that empowered the creature disappeared the power that was lent also did. No, no, no. There was not enough bodies here, not enough energy to rebuild its form and its strength.

The ritual, there was only one option left to it and it had best be started now. As the shadow magic pushed outwards and touched everything who had been touched by the tainted water pockets of light were also felt. These cursed weapons and trinkets! They protected the mortals from its ritual. Regardless once the ritual was complete it would have enough power to squash these humans. It was just a matter of time now, a race. Them to race to its chamber in time or it to complete the ritual first. The winner would surely claim victory.

Environment and running the adventure

Bottom of the map

There are some cave ins that donโ€™t look like they can be fixed with a pick and shovel but most of the map is connected. Most rooms are left bare to be filled in as we see fit. There is a mess hall to the left of the ritual hall and on the top of the page there is a set of stairs leading to a balcony where archers could be stationed, perhaps a large table for looking at a map for defence coordination.

Top of the map

The top half of the map is new, roughly carved, uneven ground with sharp edges. Even the walls and square(ish) rooms are uneven and basic however there is evidence of technology and infrastructure taking place in most rooms. A barracks to the left of the large room of the main entrance serves to feed troops to the wall or the the defence of the Ritual hall or southern rooms. The warren where the prisoner cells are could be filled with critters or beasts that get fed the scraps (dead prisoners) or as a sleeping quarters for the lowest of slaves and servants in the citadel.

The prisoner cells located at the top right of the map is where the Ogre encounter happens. The tunnels to the Ritual hall (centre of the map) should be hidden and either investigated and stumbled into naturally or with a guide. The bottom half of the map should be a mixture of old dwarven stone work and newly hewn, rough stone (likely the Oni).

Encounters

The War room

Several creatures are milling about preparing to either go out to the battlefield or command it. Several Oni Captains stand by with Oni sentinels acting as guard and a handful of Oni to get ready to fight.

The Oni are on the lower level. They are surprised by the party if they come through the front door (if applicable). The sentinels are not and the captains quickly engage to curry favour from the Shadow.

The Training Hall

The Training hall is within shouting distance of the main hall if the party let any creature escape towards the hall.

The hall itself is rather empty with some training dummies against the wall. The stench of sweat and blood is strong in here as the Oni, and their trainer have been drilling for what seems to be hours. As the party appear they are eager and keen for a fight. They will have advantage on saves vs Fear AND have advantage on attack rolls for the first battle round.

The Mess Hall

The Mess Hall is filled with drunken Oni. Some injured, some not. These Oni appear to be celebrating and none of them are fit for a fight. They are considered to have the Poisoned condition.

Collapsed Room

The collapsed room looks like its undergoing restoration. A team of 7 Butatลย are busy moving rocks from the wall and startle quickly. They have no weapons but tools to move and break apart soil and rock. They are quick to flee and will dont want to cause a fuss. They seem to be very disloyal to the Oni and The Shadow and harbour resentment. Mayu be willing to help the party outl if asked.

The Warren

The warren is a series of tunnels and 10ftx10ft (or bigger) dens where the Bakegamoto are bred. Its attended by a head breeder, some servents (Butatลย slaves) and the parents with their pups.

The Cells

The Cells are where the Shadow Born Ogre watches over and bosses the slaves and captives around. Shockingly intelligent he uses the prejudice of being a dumb brute to his advantage and will attempt to feint being dumb – but he is a bad actor and his ruse is easily seen through. There are two sets of cells in this room separating the Humans from the captured spiritfolk (Cant have the prisoners and slaves eating each other now..) and several creatures tied to benches or racks receiving torture from the Ogre. A few Butatลย slaves are in the room but they cheer on the party as they start to see the Ogre get hurt and be bested by mere humans.

The Butatลย slaves are very very willing to help the party and will approach them and speak in broken common to plead for them to save them and kill their Dark Master.

Creatures in the halls (all created inย tetra-cube)

Shadow Bound Ogre

The Shadow is very selective in who it trusts and loans its power to. This Ogre through sheer strength, malice and willingness to spread the shadows corruption was one of the favoured ones. Engaging the party quickly and with great sweeping blows I would set his initiative to 15 and keep it there. The shadow didnโ€™t just bless this brute with more strength and shadow infused blows but with a cunning intellect. It knows when its in trouble and will act accordingly. Willing to grab, grapple and hold hostages this should be a tough warmup fight.

The Shadows Avatar

Bit of a spoiler โ€“ the ritual goes off but not half as much as it would have wanted. By drawing the life from all its minions (through its back up plan) it manages to scrape by at this power level โ€“ not the full force of a deity but close enough for the average mortal.

Fast, intelligent, charismatic and having the ability to induce fear upon the entire party this is a mean creature. Immune to damage unless magical or dealing radiant damage this will take some chunking before it goes away.

Having a unarmed attack that can turn into a free grapple is good, as a legendary action it can help make this creature feel stronger and more imposing that it should. The scimitar is also quite strong with its strength drain ability. Party members will start to fear this attack if the fight goes on too low as instant death is a rare thing in D&D5e.

The fall

In Confronting the Shadow, and his Avatar the party inadvertently defeat the host army. The creature they fight slaughters all his servants and slaves, using their souls to increase its own power for a final confrontation. The rest of what happens will have to wait until the end of the month…

This is it. The final weekly wrap-up for the eleven months of this campaign. Thanks for sticking with me for this long and for joining me tonight to go through the end of week write-up. Don’t forget that this week I will touch some things up. Probably create some loot for the citadel or something. Also, as with every signoff, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Path into the Shadows Throne

Welcome to another end of week writeup where we look towards the citadel known as The Shadows Throne. This week our party moves towards a hidden path into the shadows Throne, or the front door, and prepare to confront the being that has haunted them for almost a year now. So sit back, have a cup of coffee and lets catch up on what was created this week.

Path into the Shadows Throne

The party stared at the sheets of paper in front of them. The small droplets of blood that clung to the parchment left a trail as they slid to the ground. The letters, maps and notes that lay out infront of them revealed a side yo the Oni that they hadnโ€™t seen. And one they wished they hadnโ€™t.

Diagrams for a ritual in a large antechamber were revealed. A large altar or pedestal looked to be in a large bowl or recession in the chamber. The drawings indicated sacrifice of spirit folk, oni, humans and other races deemed lower than the oni.

The ritual looked to be one of creation. Binding bones, flesh and blood together to form a new body for something. The ritual pages finished here but there other pages that looked to be schematics for a fortress within a mountain. It mapped plans for guard rotations as well as the hidden path for escaping the citadel in case of emergencies.

Taking the plans, Gin and the surviving members of the plan they head back to the wall. The captain, Kyoko and the messenger for Kuang were all eagerly waiting for the party when they arrived.

After some time they started discussing what it could mean in hurried conversation before they turned to the party for advice.

Blood Bone and Shadow

245TuBlBoASh

The creature stirred from the warm granite and ash on the stone floor. Slowly the nerves in its muscles fired and it pushes its face from the ground and looked up at the creatures that served it. They stood around it in reverence, not wanting to be the first to approach the fallen figure that had, until this moment, lay crumpled on the ground.

โ€œMaster. The humans. They have pushed us from the wall. I.. er.. some of the others feared you had fallen and ordered a retreat.โ€ A large, although cowardly, oni spoke as it shuffled forward towards the large humanoid figure. โ€œWhat would you have us do? We may be able to rally the spirit folk and have them take back the ground we lost when the ice witch..โ€ his speech was cut short as the creatures hand shot forward and plunged into the chest of the oni. With a look of shock and horror the oni watched as its heart was pulled from its chest, all but one artery detached as the figure drank deep from the pulsing organ.

โ€œI would have you shut upโ€ the creature said as it drank its fill from the warm blood. โ€œI would have you all not have retreated from the wall. It was ours to take. Victory was within our grasp and you let it slip through our fingers.โ€ The creature said as it shuffled to kneel on the ground.

No creature dared speak or move for fear of suffering its wrath. Although it wasnโ€™t the shadow itself it was a vessel for embodying its unholy form within this plane and its power was unfathomable to the mortal creatures that served it.

Finally a ogre like creature spoke. โ€œMaster. The humans. They are come hereโ€ฆโ€ The rest of the servants moved from the avatar.

It slowly looked up at all those who were gathered. โ€œThe ritual must be done again. Before they get here. I will need to bolster this body and prepare to do what you can not. Kill a party of humans. Take the slaves, take the captives. Grab the weak and injured. Their bodies will renew my strength. Go nowโ€ The avatar if shadow barked and delighted in the creatures panicked scurry.

Herald of Light

245WeHeOLi

Liz and Jung travelled with a small army of Harimasu warriors as Kuang directed them towards the shattered mountain up ahead. Since Jung has appeared as a dragon Liz had begun to notice that her connection to her deity, Chauntea, had increased. Her Goddess had started to grant her more powerful blessings and miracles and she had the feeling she was being drawn towards the dark mountains.

What Liz hadnโ€™t counted on was the aura that seemed to resonate from her causing creatures to shy from her and humans to flock to her. Her presence when General Kuang and the Harimasu warriors met the Toshio family guard, mercenaries and soldiers caused the majority of them to lay their arms down and surrender to the Harimasu force.

When travelling through the western pass and even past the wall towards the shattered peak ahead creatures, Oni and other dark servants of the Shadow retreat from her presence. That or maybe it was the fifteen foot dragon that floated or walked next to her at all times.

Jung, once called Siu, had increased in size since being with the humans. Whatโ€™s more he had noticed that whilst being with Liz he was stronger, faster and seemed to radiate a light much like she did. As the two of them approached the front ranks of the soldiers โ€“ a mix of Harimasu and the defected Toshio soldiers โ€“ the full extent of the mountain came into view.

โ€œWe believe that they are already in there. Or close to being so we believe.โ€ Takeo said as he appeared suddenly next to Liz in a flutter of feathers. โ€œSome of the Wall guard have begun to siege the wall at the entrance to the mountain, well what remains of it.โ€ he continued as he looked across Jung and Liz. โ€œI am glad that you have come. We could use your help. The men and women will rejoice in just seeing you, evidence of our ancestors being on our side as well as the light that radiates from you Liz is a direct affront to the Shadow.โ€

Looking forwards towards the skirmishes ahead Liz reached out to Chauntea. With a prayer on her tongue she asked for the light to shine on Ryokughan.

NPCs –

Elizabeth โ€œLizbetโ€ Scaulder

Liz appears at the frontline with the golden dragon form of Jung Harimasu as they prepare to assault the citadel known as The Shadows Throne. As a distraction or aiding the getting the party in it doesn’t matter as her presence alone rallies the troops.

Environment and running the adventure

Smoke and dust fill the sky as you gaze up at the entrance to the mountain. The flow of Oni and other servants of the Shadow are constant, scurrying backwards and forth across the rough stone. Deep within the mountain a red glow and the chants of an unholy ritual resonate through the cold stone as you stand and watch. As you look at the remnants of the crumbled faรงade of the citadel before you its not evident whether it was constructed after of before the rock fell, but you can tell that it was made by a master craftsmen.

The creatures that move through the area donโ€™t pay you any attention but they seem to be directed by an unseen hand. As the pounding of air and chanting of magic continues the feeling of unease settled in your bones. This is not a place for mortals. This is not a place where the sunlight wants to tread for fear of being swallowed up by the shadow that has penetrated the stone.

Encounter – The Trenches and Sentinels

Oni, BakegamotoButatล, Oni Sentinels and bound river trolls guard the front entrance. The Butato provide ranged support from the walls and pepper the ground with arrows whilst Oni defend the gate, wall and operate the defence. The Bakegamoto act as shock troops and charge in to disrupt the party.

The trolls are interesting, they are chained a little way from the wall in a small trench. When those foolish or unaware walk near them the trolls attack with a ferocious hunger but they are chained to the trench. These chains however can be released by mechanisms that the Oni control (but the trolls attack Oni and humans alike).

The Oni sentinels are the best marksmen of the Oni. They are positioned in watch towers and are crack shots with a heavy crossbow. However there are not many of them. As the mountain fell many of those on watch were lost as the towers were crushed by the rock.

The hidden passage

The hidden passage is along the wall towards the north of the entrance. This requires the party to cross a trench, dodge crossbow shots before entering into it. Having or memorising the notes from the Oni camp will enable them to find the entrance with no issue. Once in there is nothing within the passage way itself apart from some Giant rats and perhaps a starved Oni or Butatล.

Another week has come and gone and we find ourselves at the precipice of the end of the year of content. This week we revealed the intel gathered from the Oni camp, made our way to the citadel and hopefully saw our party make their ways in. Next week we confront the creature at the heart of the ritual which is a pretty big deal. So don’t forget to join me for for this coming week and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,
