Sin of the Highest Order

An accident, a powerful storm and an urgent need for healing finds the party thrust into drama as the sin of the highest order is committed in the church of Kelemvor. Will the party clear their own name and decide to help the fanatic clergy in locating who or what ever healed their injured to be thrown at the mercy of the clerics or will they find another way…

So let’s grab a coffee, maybe pack a few extra-strength healing potions and contemplate tonight’s adventure!

When the party find themselves in urgent need of a healer during the middle of a storm they rush to the nearest church that they can find only to be disappointed. The Church of Kelemvor has its sects where they take the Lord of the dead’s doctrine to the extreme. Denying the party the healing they need the party are forced to wait until dawn, uncertain of what will come to them.

However, the coming of dawn brings a miracle. Someone or something had performed powerful healing magic without the party or any cleric in the church from knowing. But in healing those deemed to meet the judge of the damned the sect locked down the church, only willing to open the great doors once the healer was turned in to meet judgment.

The Church of Bone and Mortar – created in Nightcafe.

The crack of thunder heralded their arrival to the small village as they rushed carrying their companion with them. It had happened so fast, an ambush as they were setting up camp in an abandoned cabin an hours ride from the village that they were now rushing into. A creature leapt upon their companion and in its ferocious strike it dealt a deathly blow to the person on watch.

As no magic of divine, arcane or that born from nature took hold the it was by stroke of luck that a village that they had passed housed a church. Perhaps the healers there would have better luck had been the thought and as they rushed through the door several members of the clergy approached. As they saw the adventurers carrying their precious cargo, water dripping from their soaked clothes the clerics moved to help them with the patient.

Asking for them to be healed a look of compassion crossed the eyes of the oldest member of the clergy. “I am afraid that is not something we can do. We follow The Lord of the Dead, judge of the damned and they have been deemed worthy to meet Kelemvor to be judged. We have sworn to not interfere with his noble plan and so we are unable to heal him. It is our lords doctrine.” he said with kind but fervent eyes. “But we can provide shelter, the storm worsens outside and we can ensure that your companion is safe and comfortable until then.”

The party was shown to separate rooms, their unconscious companion given the warmest room where the clerics cleaned their wounds, dried their clothing with a muttered prayer and warmed the room so they would be comfortable. It was no surprise that the adventurers would get no sleep that night.

But dawn brought something unexpected. The party was woken by the clergy of Kelemvor banging on the doors. “Please get dressed and come quick.” As they left their rooms they were startled to see their companion standing, smiling and looking fine. After a quick reunion the clergy looked them up and down sternly.

“As we suspected. You are not the cause of this healing.” one of the sterner looking women punctuated the sentence with a sigh. “That means we have someone who has broken their oath. The church has been locked down and until we find who did this we are unable to open the doors. If you can assist us in finding who broke the oath you will be free to continue your journey quicker. You’re welcome to stay for the excommunication and execution afterwards if you would like.” she said with a emphasis as she turned and left for the grand hall.

A bit of a harder one to justify the ‘lock down’ for the party this week but hopefully saving someone who healed their companion will help make the process smoother. Don’t forget that each day this week I will continue to expand this adventure. So don’t forget to come back each day and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Chilled Well

This week I continued with the creating a shortened Zine, something that fits on a single A4 sheet of paper with just enough information to set the scene, plot and hook with some NPCs sprinkled through that it could be used in any system.

I think its still working well so without any further waiting I present The Chilled Well, in the short format, as a fun one-shot to assist GMs when they need a night out of the books whether you run Pathfinder, Open Legends RPG, D&D or any other RPG System.

There is references to the blog nights which are D&D centric (regarding Friday night’s Stat-blocks) but this adventure can be used system agnostic more so than my regular Zines. As always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for many of my D&D creatures.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, The Chilled Well, and that your rolls are made with advantage.

The Chilled Well – Created in Nightcafe.

As the parties look for work in the village of Briss they stare at the nearly empty job board and try to avoid the one request for aid that is left on it. “Adventurers wanted to remove rat infestation in the general store’s basement. Ten gold pieces as payment.- See Abagail Piebald.”

It hadn’t been long since their last job so they could afford to be picky but the caravan out of here would cost them nearly ten gold pieces and there wasn’t much going on in this village.

As they reached for the job a panting messenger ran to the board, muttering “pardon, ‘scuse me.” before he impaled a small square of paper upon a nail on the board.

“Wanted. Adventurers and warriors to explore a mysterious cave discovered at the Sylphare Quarry. Harry Sylphare, head to the Sylphare masons company, to provide a generous reward if the cave can be made safe enough for the quarry to resume business. Promptness awarded with a portion of payment in advance.- Harry Sylphare.”

The party find themselves standing in a low ceilinged chamber where a constant drip could be heard. It was near freezing within the chamber and every breath they took created a cloud of steam. A faint blue light could be seen in the darkness of the cavern, a large throne glowed as dozens of runes and sigils of binding, warding and protection fizzled and winked as if the magic that sustained them was waning. In the faint blue light, and the light they carried with them, they could make out the scraps of miners’ uniforms on the ground near the throne along with dozens of other bones.

The light caught on pools of water which flickered and moved as if they themselves were alive. As they waited a skull fell over near the altar-like throne and rolled slowly away from it before sinking beneath the surface of a dark and cold pool of water. However several bones started to shift, vibrate and move as they floated slowly to the air, the lights from the runes and sigils winked out of existence all at once and the bones started to form the rough shape of a creature. Cold mist wrapped around the bones revealing a creature half made of shadow-mist with the bones of its victims giving its form substance. A presence in their mind, beckoning them to join it by the altar touched their mind. A whisper, a promise of power and salvation from the cruelty of the world.

Blue light from the altar’s carved runes and sigils burst forth and the energy caused the creature’s form to waver, the bone falling to the ground as it sank lower. The presence instantly disappears. But as the bones clattered to the cold stone the creature disappeared, sinking into shadow and only the rippled, rustled and clatter of moving bones and rocks indicated where the creature was as it stalked its new prey.

PDF adventure – The Chilled Well

Thanks for joining me today for another Zine this year. This is a condensed version of the Zine, but I hope the format works and is good to look at! Please feel free to leave comments if this format is appealing – so make sure to grab a copy of the PDF.

Next time you get a party together consider running this adventure and I hope that you enjoy it.
I hope you don’t miss a thing so come back daily in the coming week and year. This is so you can experience the creation of the next adventure as it evolves and shapes out. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Enemies in the Vault

This week it should come to no surprise that the party will have to face Enemies in the Vault as they are suspected of rigging the games in their favour. But what they may not have thought of is the contestants that came before them may also pose some trouble for them.

So let’s sit down, grab a coffee as we roll into tonight’s encounter!

Enemies in the Vault

433FrEnITVa

The roar of the crowd died down as the party travelled deeper into the vault and its dark walls they became increasingly aware of how close the other warriors from the house of Voiron were to them. After an hour of travelling through the twisting tunnels the party realised that the others were no longer following them. Their location was quickly revealed as several arrows whistled past them.

Voiron’s Chosen – created in Tetra-cube

The further the party delved deeper the hotter it got and the signs of those warriors and those, the embers anointed that had been lost a long time ago. But as they walked down a hallway the heat started to rise and the remains of these lost warriors and adventurers could be found along the walls. Slowly, the burnt skeletons of the deceased stood and with unnatural energies they shambled towards the party.

Embers Lost Anointed – Created in tetra-cube.

The rough obsidian platforms were nearly as hard to walk on as they were to get onto. At the end of the platforms an obsidian throne stood with a large gem that appeared as if it was made from lava itself. A figure swirled in the depths of the stone as if waiting to be released.

Efreeti – Created in tetra-cube.

A bit of a short one tonight but three ‘standard’ creatures for this kind of adventure. Don’t forget to come back this weekend for the end of week Zine and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Ember Vault

The Ember Vault was given its name due to the amount of heat that was pulsating through the cavern system and at its core it was found why. Deep underground there is a pit of active lava in an ancient cavern which held the elemental energy of a Efreeti.

So let’s sit back, grab a hot coffee and roll through tonight’s map!

The Ember Vault

433ThEmVa

Ember Vault – Created in Inkarnate

The walls and raised pillars in the centre of the walls are smooth and razor sharp chunks of obsidian. To slip would result in being cut to ribbons before you even hit the rocky-crusted lava twenty feet below. But if you can survive the trek at the end a trapped efreeti waits for those who want to make a deal and receive a wish – but the catch is normally that it will do what ever it wants and grant your wish in a way that you really, really don’t want it.

Many, many textured layers this week to get the right blend of stone, lava rocks and shadows. The asset stamps are quite simple really with six or so in total that blend together to highlight the details in of the texture and other assets. A relatively straight forward map this week but something that I hope poses a challenge and has a lot of visual appeal (despite the lava looking nearly like muscles…)

Thanks for joining me tonight while I tinkered with many, many overlapping textures to get something I was happy with this week. Don’t forget to come back the last few days of the week to keep on top of what’s happening here and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Corrupted Geass

Now the title probably gives away what this weeks twist really is about but the concept of a corrupted geass, or a influenced spell is nothing new. But this week those who are benefiting from the corrupted geass are not the cause of the corruption.

So let’s grab a coffee, take a deep breath and stroll into tonight’s adventure!

Corrupted Geass

433WeCoGe

As the final test closed with a triumphant chorus the Voiron’s chosen score sealed their position in first place. The Party had been surrounded by more than one mishap where the team directly competing against them had their chances ripped away from them until it was just Voiron’s warriors and the party that was chosen by the Ember games themselves.

But as they watched the magic symbols converge on the wall opposite where the nobles sat and above the entrance to the Ember Vault something was odd. The final two scores that were being tallied showed that Voiron’s Chosen was in first place with a near perfect score of fifty six out of sixty. They were just mere moments from being declared winners of the games. But the respectable score for the visiting adventure party started to change.

Slowly as if in time of the beating of soaring dragon the numbers trickled upwards. Fourty, fourty one, fourty two and so the numbers continued. It paused as it caused the party to be equal to the Voiron’s champions before it continued changed to a glaring sixty. A perfect score. The arena was quiet for a moment as everyone took a collective breath before the leader board changed revealing that the Ember Games Chosen had indeed won, chosen by the Geass itself to enter the vault.

The fury, joy and confusion exploded all at once as the upset caused bags of gold to now be changing hands in ways that were not expected. Nobles erupted with fury as their chances were dashed and a call to overrule the geass was put forth. However, the geass moved onwards with its agenda and three burning diamonds appeared as motes of energy above the heads of each of the party members.

A magically enhanced voice boomed outwards as the speaker called order. “The Geass has appeared to overturn the rules and decide on its own. While we try and understand what has happened here we know what now must be done. Each dawn a mote of Ember will disappear from the heads of the Ember Games Chosen and upon the third mote disappearing it will seal the vault once more. However, Voiron’s Chosen were winning before the geass took matters into its own hands, figuratively speaking.” he paused.

“The council over these games has declared that both the Voirons Chosen and the Ember Games Chosen will enter and that both groups will be given a chance to fulfil their own and their lords, or mysterious benefactors, wishes. We wish our Anointed the very best in the dark of the Ember Vault and while we unpick the mess that the Geass has created this time we will trust in the process and make do with the best we have.”

Thanks for joining me for a short one tonight for another addition to this weeks adventure. Don’t forget that we still have some more nights remaining for this weeks adventure. So don’t forget to come back each day this week and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Nobles Anointed

Those who are considered the Nobles Anointed are all chosen to enter the vault in all ways other than the Geass formalising the decision. The strongest, most ruthless and savage warriors of the noble houses are gifted with magical trinkets, better equipment and sometimes even more favourable odds at completing the tests in the rounds. These Nobles Anointed are nearly all but assured to win the Ember Vault Games, emphasis on nearly…

So let’s sit down, check your pockets and watch out for trickery and foul play as we move through tonight’s adventure!

Nobles Anointed

433TuNoAn

Voiron’s Chosen – Created in Nightcafe.

Voiron watched as his chosen stood at the beginning of the first trial and marvelled at what his house had produced this year. Declared the Nobles Anointed already their victory was nearly all but decided and even the surprise nominations of a group from outside the nobles house had not shaken the belief that House Voiron would succeed.

As Voiron’s chosen began the trial, taking down illusionary targets within the confines of the arena, the crowd was silent in awe at the ruthless efficiency in which these warriors took down their quarry. That was until a rogue bolt from a crossbow found flesh instead of illusion.

One of the other noble houses warriors lay motionless as his life blood seeped from the wound in his chest. As the nobles murmured the warriors from the house of Voiron stood obediently. It wasn’t uncommon that a contestant or two would lose their life in these games but the question was yet to be answered. How did the warrior make its way onto the field and what was he doing there when he knew that the games were in place.

As the warriors had followed the rules of the test and Lord Plero’s man was found at fault, which ultimately cost him his life, the warriors from the house Voiron were awarded their points by the Arena’s geass and were released from the field.

Lord Plero – Created in Nightcafe.

Lord Plero watched as his most skilled archer’s body was taken from the field and bristled when the surprise contestants were called to take the test. This group was the direct competitor with his warriors and despite his loss he was confident that his warriors would still come through. That was until the surprise arrivals scored a near-perfect score, better than the Nobles Anointed from Voiron’s house.

Plero watched as his warriors scored well, but nothing like they would have if they had a full force on the field and if their archer hadn’t found himself dead. Plero watched as the scores were tallied and noticed that the new comers had somehow managed to find themselves in second place.

Other nobles were muttering nearby and as Plero’s own team dropped in ranking the whispers of foul play reached his ear. Plero stood and with deliberate steps sought out the game organisers – those who had best knowledge of how the Geass worked and what could have caused this.

Thanks for joining me tonight for another glimpse at how this adventure is shaping up. As usual each day this week we will be expanding this adventure so don’t forget to come back daily to stay up to date and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Dark Ember Arena

This week the Dark Ember Arena is kicking off at our tabletop where the party are thrown into the ring with the favourites of the cities noble houses to win the honour of near certain death in the Ember Vault. The catch, they don’t know who nominated them and if they succeed it is said that they will have what ever they wish for.

So let’s grab a coffee, assess the competition and dash into tonight’s adventure!

The Dark Ember trials have been the only way for adventurers and aspiring heroes to be chosen to enter the Ember Vault. It is rumoured that those who are worthy are selected to enter the caverns beneath the City of Mylos known as the Ember Vault and there at the end of the dark caverns waits a being that will grant any wish that the requestor, if worthy, has.

However, not just anyone can enter into these games and often the lords of Mylos will hand select people from their own houses to take part in the games as a way of ensuring that the ambitions of the houses are put forth as wishes of the potential victor. But not all houses play fair and the party are thrown into the mix by the way of an unknown sponsor whose ambitions and desires bode poorly for Mylos.

Dark Ember Arena

433MoDaEnAr

Dark Ember Arena – created in Nightcafe.

Their sound of their names being called forth still rang as a shock to the party as they stood in the seats that they had won in a game of chance earlier that day. The Ember Vault games was the talk of the town and this years nominees were rumoured to be the best yet. The Dark Ember Arena hosted the games and the party had wanted to see the famed warriors, mages and clerics that Mylos boasted since arriving in the city.

But as a quiet rumbled across the audience and the speaker called out their names again it became clear that by some twist of fate, or supremely dumb luck, they found themselves as one of the nominated parties who were to take place in the games.

As they moved forward the crowd parted for them and the whispering began. It was not often, it was in fact rare that a party that wasn’t affiliated with one of the great houses of Mylos was nominated to take place in the games to be chosen to enter the Ember Vault. It was less common that the sponsor was unnamed but sealed by none other than the mad-king, someone who had not had a coherent thought in decades.

As the party stood before the announcer, a short man, he examined them before conferring with one of his peers. “It seems it has happened again. Chosen by the Ember Games to compete at the Dark Ember Arena for the sake of themselves, not a lord.” he spoke out loud.

“The rules are simple for those of you who are not familiar with the games,” he said looking at the party,” Three tests will take place over several rounds. Each round the competitors will score points based on their strength, wits or skill. A maximum of twenty points will be awarded per test and the group that has the most points, that is who is closest to sixty, will be anointed the Ember Champions by the geass over the arena who decides merit and awards points. The group that is anointed will be allowed into the labyrinth below.” he said before clearing his throat.

“When there is no clear winner the geass will take over and its decision is final.”

Witches of Kilderken

Kilderken Forest – Created in Nightcafe.

The party moved alongside the Kilderken forest on the way to the port city of Palau. As they marvelled at how the sun was defying the darkness of the woods nearby they heard a woman crying nearby. Locating the distressed forager they quickly learnt that the woman’s daughters had been taken recently by a group of men who lived in the woods. Jaeden, the woman, had tried to find her daughters, Cassandra and Taylor but her searches had been unfruitful as the men had prevented her from reaching where they had kept her daughters chained.

She requests for the party to free her and offers not much in the way of a reward except for anything within her power to grant them if they are able to help her.

The party finds that the woods are filled with signs of dark magic with runes carved into trees. Feathers, bones of forest creatures and even organs were tied together with twine in ghastly fetishes that caused the adventurers skin to crawl.

Several times they felt as if they were being watched however, they could not see any cause for such a feeling except for a whisper of a voice in the breeze or the sound of a distant calling animal. The few animals they did see looked deranged and feral. Several of them attacked the party after a few moments of encountering them and with slavering jaws the bit ferociously at the party and only the release of death stopped their madness.

The party could see lights ahead through the dimness of post-dusk and the forest here was more alive than the part they had trekked through. Birds roosting in trees and small creatures moved through the woods and fled from the party instead of attacking on sight like the animals they had encountered earlier that day.

The lights turned out to be a camp or sorts with some patchwork tents grouped together around a large campfire where a few small game animals were already roasting. A stream ran nearby which the party saw a few men and women patrolling near as they gathered buckets of water and refilled water skins. A tent stood apart from the others and it looked in worse repair with great rips, cuts and slashes upon the canvas surface. However, the party could see glinting in the light a post had been erected inside the tent with two figures chained to it with dark metals. Their hands bound together and their mouths gagged they watched as the armed men and woman moved around the camp.

Ci’ara Stormbringer

Tonight I wanted to test a work flow of creating Ci’ara Stormbringer, a character in OpenLegend RPG without getting bogged down in the overwhelming options that are available in this system. So tonight I give you the, nearly finished results of Ci’ara, a bit about her and how I envision her being played as well as her character sheet!

So let’s grab a coffee, sit back and meet Ci’ara Stormbringer, the natures wrath.

Ci’ara Stormbringer

Ci’ara Stormbringer – Created in Nightcafe.

Background

Ci’ara is an elf from the Syphare Forest tribe and was brought up like most elven children. She had a love for nature that would not be contained and would often be found talking to animals and amongst the woods, lakes and mountains near her home as opposed to being indoors. Although she spent most of her time out doors she quickly found her calling when studying basic magic.

Taken in by the local sorceress she learnt to harness the weave around her by tapping into natures might and she gradually became more powerful. However, when she was still young in her study the gods of nature put forth a test to her village, or so the elders called it, and a massive storm threatened to destroy the village. But Ci’ara harnessed the storms power and controlled the fury of nature to redirect it to where it would cause no harm.

Ci’ara was then given the name Stormbringer and has since harnessed the fury and power of the storms that she can summon.

Abilities

Ci’ara specialises in Lightning attacks and can summon gusts and gales to hamper her enemies movements and assist her allies in battle. Specialising in Barriers made from whirling wind and lightning she can also lash out to stun, slow and even deafen her enemies when they get to close.

She can launch out a single jolt of electricity towards a foe or she can call down an entire storm of lightning bolts to everything within an area if she so chooses. Anything that feels the full strength of her lightnings touch is left stunned and wishing they never threatened the woods where she calls home.

Banes

  • Stunned
  • Forced Move
  • Deafened
  • Slowed
  • Immobile

Boons

  • Haste
  • Barrier
  • Light
  • Flight* (Future boon – needs a higher Movement attribute score)

Feats:

Her specialisation in lightning magic has left a lasting mark on those who have stood against her, and there has been many. These foes of nature and the elves find themselves left stunned on the battlefield as a bolt of lightning has arced through their ranks, leaving them breathless and their armour smouldering.

  • Attack specialisation 1 (Lightning)
  • Bane Focus (Stunned)

Perks and Flaws:

She sometimes does still talk to animals to get a feeling of what is on their mind. Although she isn’t as talented as other druids or rangers she still has an affinity for nature and can communicate with them when needed.

Perks:

  • Natures Ally
  • Whisper of the wild

However she does not know much of the real world and is hot tempered when defending nature, her people or animals. This has landed her in hot water more than once where her party; commonly dwarves, humans and halflings, have a strong need to hunt for their food when adventuring and she perceives this as a threat and disrespect to nature itself.

Flaws:

  • Naive
  • Zealous (when dealing with nature and animals)

Attributes:

Highly willed and a force to be reckoned with due to her sense of self she is a powerful ally when she is in her element. Her elven graces and natural perception make her a useful ally when on the move and not just in combat when she needs to bring the storms wrath upon her foes.

  • Agility 2
  • Perception 2
  • Presence 2
  • Movement 3
  • Will 4
  • Energy 5

You may notice that I have structured these a bit differently to normal. This is due to how I went through what I wanted in Ci’ara, before knowing she was an elven maiden, with the concept of a storm-mage. Focusing on the Boons; benefits she can bestow onto others, the Banes; the debuffs she could inflict upon enemies, and her fighting style; her feats – what potentially separated her from other mages, it left me with a strong sense of who she was.

I then chose Perks that looked at who she was as a child due to her race (whisper of the wild) and then due to her calling or achievements as an adventurer (natures ally) and I was able to fill in the missing gaps.

By knowing what I wanted her to do and how I wanted her to fight; battlefield control and lightning damage, I identified what attributes I needed, what was most important and what scores I needed for her to be effective. I think this worked out well and I didn’t feel overwhelmed by choice, which is a feeling I get when looking at Openlegend RPG.

Ci’ara Stormbringer

Thanks for dropping by tonight. Ci’ara Stormbringer is the first in a party of 5 that I wish to take through this process to really solidify my ideas. If I can remove some of the potential apprehension in character creation I feel like OLRPG may become the dominant RPG I use moving forward. But we will see. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for another end-of-week Zine and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Thren

The Thren are a creature born from the spores of the Thren Plant and they have one purpose, to create more of their kind. But these plants aren’t the most difficult think to destroy and so they have several of their Thren guard their grove so that their survival is nearly guaranteed.

So let’s sit down, grab a coffee as we roll into tonight’s encounter!

The Thren

432FrThren

Small plants that look to be a mixture between a large leafed bulbous plant and a fungi grow in darker, low-light areas. Although not a fungi itself these plants emit spores that will grow on dead matter into the Thren itself – an organism that uses the nutrients in a creature to form a body for itself.

It does this to either lure prey into its grove or to spread forth and create more groves elsewhere by using the Thren to find or create a suitable area for the plants to be created. Once old enough to create spores then dead animal (or people) will form the basis of the new creature.

Thren Plant – created in Tetra-cube

The ‘Legs and arms’ of the plant, the Thren are organised and highly intelligent beings who grew from where spores harvested and converted flesh into plant-based materials. The Thren, as they all share the same name, are masters of stealth and their only duty is to spread the colony to create more of their kind.

While not evil, they are driven to thrive and survive which normally results in humanoids becoming food for the spores.

Thren – Created in tetra-cube.
