Safeguard of the Skimmer

A different one tonight but inspired by some old adventures – and the kids – but this week we look at the Safeguard of the Skimmer – a nautical themed adventure for this weeks one shot!

So get your sea legs ready, grab some coffee (or something stronger) as we set sail in tonight’s adventure!

A daring race finds vessels Racing around the Rook – a tall rock formation that juts out of the ocean – defying the gods, and creatures that try to drag it down into the abyss. But there is more to this race as the winner is entitled to riches – until someone else else claims the title in this yearly event.

However, as with all competition when wealth, fame and fortune is on the line not everyone plays fair. The party are hired to defend the vessel as its owner races to win for noble causes and they are beset by their fellow competitors in a most unsportsmanlike behaviour. Will they steer clear of the rocks or will something else breach their hull?

Safeguard of the Skimmer – Created in WordPress!?

The party looked at the vessels that were tied at the docks that bobbed lightly in the waves. Each one of them had a prospective crew or a solitary sailor that was waving to the crowds. Undoubtedly there was a great deal of coin that was being wagered for and against the crowd favourites.

Much like their employer, Gareth, other contenders had hired adventurers to come and aid in their voyage but also, to protect it. Despite being declared out of bounds, illegal and punishable many contenders find themselves at the point end of a sword or the hot end of a flaming spell as there is a lot of coin that passes between favourites. So in the last few years the organisers have allowed the hiring of guards to protect the vessel and its crew.

The party were such guards. Paid well for their timer onboard the Surf Skimmer but there was a large bonus, a monthly sum that would be payable to them if they were to help Gareth win. This was enough to even brave the waters, the competition and those that call the seas home. Piracy was rife and so the importance of having good guards was not lost on the contenders or those they hired.

As they looked around not many was paying attention to Gareth. This was good as it was part of his plan to not draw attention to himself, to look like he would be no threat until he was in open ocean – then his plan was to demonstrate what his ship and his skill could do. Gareth was a third generation captain and had been sailing these sea’s since he was a boy. But more than that his ship was one of a kind, small – hence the lack of crew but big enough to house himself and a few companions for the week or so the journey would take.

As the organiser took to the stand at the far end of the dock even his magically enhanced voice could not reach to where Gareth and the party were placed – last place. ‘Don’t worry. I’ve heard this before. My father raced in this a few years back and I watched from the crowds. He was the favourite to win that year and you can bet that Ma and us were very proud to be relate to Gareth Seaspray, my father that is. I inherited his name. Hopefully not his bad luck. He ran into some pirates and despite outrunning them he ran aground on the Rook itself. They never found his body.’ Gareth added.

As the gulls soared above them calling out for any morsel of food to be provided to them the Gareth and the other captains, and their crew, readies their ships. ‘Get ready for it.’ Gareth warned as he nodded to his childhood friend, Silvana, who was waiting to undo the mooring from the ship. The plan was to be at the back of the pack but not that too far behind so that he couldn’t catch up.

A crack of thunderous energy was sounded. ‘Thats the warning. On the next crack we g..’ he was about to finish his sentence when the second crack rang out. Silvana was quick on the mooring and Gareth released the sails to let them catch the breeze and they were off.

Thanks for dropping in tonight to see where this weeks adventure will take our players at the tabletop. The Vipers Smile

Now for the next Zine of the year I present, in single page zine format, The Vipers Smile. I still believe that these provide DMs a lot more freedom to tinker with it how they want and open up the adventures to be more free formed and flowing than the larger booklet zines.

There is references to the blog nights which are D&D centric (regarding Friday night’s Stat-blocks) but this adventure can be used system agnostic more so than my regular Zines. As always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for many of my D&D creatures.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, The Vipers Smile, and that all your rolls are made with advantage.

The party arrived in Imgard, weary from the road, lured by whispers of an opportunity suited to their talents. Whether slipping through merchant gates or braving the city’s seedy underbelly, they quickly grasped the harsh truthโ€”coin dictated survival. Towering structures and golden-lit markets painted a scene of wealth and deception, where promises were as fleeting as the wind. Seeking discretion, they found themselves at the Wonky Mule, a tavern steeped in the scent of roasted meat and ale, where conversation swirled in a tangled mess of traders, mercenaries, and thieves.

Over two days, familiar faces emergedโ€”an old storyteller spinning tales of lost glory, the battle-scarred bartender twins keeping order, and a finely dressed stranger sinking into a rigged card game among dubious company. Then, a cloaked figure stumbled near the partyโ€™s table, dropping a peculiar coin before vanishing upstairs. Recognizing the signal, the party followed into the shadows above, where secrecy reigned over promptness. Climbing the loudest stairs they had ever encountered, they soon found another of the strange coins beneath a door and knocked, stepping into a dimly lit room.

Within, the ragged figure before them shed his disguise, revealing himself as Lace, a Harper tracking the cityโ€™s disappearances. His grim tale unfolded: suspected abductors had been found dead, yet their likenesses continued appearing across Imgard and beyond. The Harpers, compromised by their notoriety, needed outsidersโ€”neutral eyes that the infiltrators wouldn’t recognize. As the party left, a fleeting moment of unease gripped them when they locked eyes with a pale-faced figure descending the stairs, his passage eerily silent despite the groaning wood beneath their own steps.

Tracking the stranger through the dim-lit streets, the party watched as he slipped into a building. Listening in, they heard his hushed wordsโ€”recruitment for fresh infiltrators, replacing those whose usefulness had expired. Yet, as his voice shifted, its masculine edge dissolving into something unnerving, the party peered through a window and barely contained their shock. His human face melted away, revealing the unmistakable serpentine features of a Yuan-ti. The realization struck hardโ€”this infiltration ran deeper than they had feared. Before they could retreat, hulking figures stepped from the shadows, and the door creaked open. There would be no easy way out.

The Yuan-ti sought only blood, hoping to kill the party and assume their identities, but they had not accounted for their strength. The battle was swift, decisive, and left no witnesses. Within the room, a hidden compartment revealed parchment detailing infiltration efforts, key targets, andโ€”most cruciallyโ€”a scheduled gathering in the coming nights. With fresh intelligence and a semblance of a plan, the party disposed of the bodies and set their sights on Imgard Sanctum, where the city’s fallen heroes were honoured. But upon arrival, the guardians greeted them not in common tongue but with a hiss, allowing them entry. Beneath the glow of the fountain, they saw the unsettling realityโ€”dozens of infiltrators moving with casual ease, their chatter masking coded exchanges. And when a group approached them, a wave of unease washed over the party, their instincts warning them that something was deeply wrong.

Yuan-ti Scaleguard

A small one tonight but introducing the Yuan-ti Scaleguard. These tougher more formidable humanoids have a thick layer of scale that covers most of their body. While not quite as corrupted as the Yuan-ti Malison they have similar abilities and can stretch their arms out like snakes to ensnare and constrict their targets.

So sit back, grab a coffee as we look deeper into this week’s encounter!

Yuan-ti Infiltrators – Created in tetra-cube.

The Yuan-ti scaleguard are the bodyguard for the infiltrators and more powerful members of their kind. They have the ability to stretch out their arms to ensnare, strangle, constrict their prey. However using their bulk and ability to restrain targets they can also issue a powerful suggestion across them to ensure that they protect the more precious yuan-tis.

Able to spit poison at great distances they are not just limited to melee combat as they, like other yuan-ti work best from the shadows. Ambushing, deceiving and slipping their way into more advantageous situations by using their natural prowess.

Thanks for joining me tonight for a small update for this weeks adventure. Don’t forget tomorrow we will wrap this week up with a Zine so make sure to come back for that. And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Yuan-ti Infiltrators

Tonight we look at a relatively simple stat block for something that has the front and centre spotlight this week – the Yuan-ti infiltrators. While not overly strong there is nothing to stop us adding stronger companions

So consider grabbing some anti-venom when picking up the coffee as we get a bit toxic in tonight’s encounter!

Yuan-ti Infiltrators

Yuan-ti Infiltrators – Created in tetra-cube.

The party had expected to see some infiltrators but having seen this many it was obvious how much of a bad shape the city if Imgard was in. Dozens of men and women gathered around the fountain under the light and the party were confident that the bulkier Yuan-ti body guards were amongst the trees and away from prying eyes.

The infiltrators moved around and spoke casually amongst each other asking about each other about family, business or even the weather. This didn’t take long to catch on as some kind of code but that’s when the party were approached by a group. As the questions came out and the party did their best to answer the unmistakeable sense of unease washed over them. Something wasn’t right here.

The Yuan-ti infiltrators are not overly direct and will try and attack as a group or use their snake-like charm to get the party into an unfavourable position with their latent magical power. The guards will step in quickly enough and they are definitely more accustomed to combat than the infiltrators – but that remains to be seen as of now.

Thanks for slithering in to get a glimpse of the Yuan-ti encounter this week. Hopefully tonight gives just enough to see where this adventure is going but not to much that you would forgo looking at the Zine. So don’t forget that we will have the zine come out this weekend for this adventure, maybe more, so make sure you come back each remaining day of this week. Imgard Sanctum

Tonight we have the Imgard Sanctum – a garden that pays respect to heroes that have been lost defending the people of Imgard. But it happens to be also a great meeting spot for those who are up to no good.

So as we close in on the infiltrators make sure to grab yourself a warm coat as we enter the Imgard Sanctum in tonight’s map!

Imgard Sanctum

Imgard Sanctum – Created in Inkarnate.

The grave stones to the north of the area pay homage to the heroes once lost. These appear be graves but there are no bodies buried here – its just a memorial. The gardens were built around the memorials and have grown to be a place to reflect. However, many people use this as a place to meet to exchange information, goods or other nefarious things which has become its main use over the years.

A simple map using some of my favourite assets. A single texture with this one (for quick use) to create the grassy background and the night filter placed over the top makes it a bit darker. Two types of trees gives variety to create more visual appeal when looking at the repeated assets of the graves and tombstones. Lanterns on pillars and a fountain add another item to create both a light source as well as something to provide cover other than trees.

Small orbs of coloured light could reflect a magical effect or fire flies that flitter through the gardens at night. Either way the Imgard Sanctum was a fun and quick map to create.

Thanks for visiting tonight to find out more about the Imgard Sanctum. As we continue on the adventure this week we with the creature stat-blocks tomorrow night we inevitably get closer to the conclusion on the weekend. So don’t forget to come back the remaining days this week to stay up to date with what’s happening at my tabletop. And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Infiltrators Identified

As we reach the tipping point of this weeks adventure its only fair that we have the infiltrators identified. However, these individuals will not go down easily and even if one is identified the possibility of infiltrating their midst is very, very unlikely.

So grab your best disguise, settle down with a coffee as we kick off tonight’s adventure!

Infiltrators Identified – Created in WordPress!?

The party had managed to track down the person they saw in the hall way outside of Lace’s room and using the information Lace had given them they believed them to be one of the infiltrators. The man in question was moving with haste down the empty streets with only the space lamplight to guide their way. Despite being a rough part of town that they travelled through the man they were following moved with a determined haste.

As they neared the man he quickly ducked into a doorway – just as swiftly the party hid from view and watched as he checked if he was being followed before entering quietly. A few moments later the party snuck up to the building and listened. ‘It’s going well. I have found the new faces of our cause since these ones’ usefulness is wearing off.’ a mans voice said. But, even as it spoke something changed within it. Gone was the masculinity and it was replaced with a lisp and feminine sound.

Looking through a small window they had to repress their shock when the face of the man they followed was shifting and melting off to reveal serpentine features beneath it, Yuan-ti’s. As they started to move away in shock a two towering figures stepped out from either side of the building and the door opened. It looks like they would have to talk or fight their way out.

As it turned out the Yuan-ti’s did not have talking in mind. Wishing to kill the party and assume their identity as a way of further infiltrating the groups trying to route them out. But they hadn’t accommodated for how powerful the party were or that they would be prepared for a fight. As the party secured the area and made sure that no one had seen the fight that occurred they scouted the room.

In a secret compartment in the table there was a stack of parchment. Details on the plans to infiltrate, who was being infiltrated and – more importantly – a meeting spot with a time and date. There was to be a gathering of the infiltrators in a few nights time within the city.

Armed with information and the semblance of a plan they disposed of the bodies and got ready for their next move.

The Dance of Lace

Tonight we meet Lace as he carefully constructs the persona that he needs everyone to see in what he calls, the dance of Lace. While not entirely forthcoming with information or some would also claim not entirely sane he is highly experienced at espionage and is normally acutely aware of what’s happening in the city. So he asking for help must mean something.

So sit down, grab a notebook as we take note of what’s been noticed happening so far within Imgard in tonight’s adventure!

The Dance of Lace

The Dance of Lace – Created in WordPress!?

After climbing possibly the most noisy stairs in any tavern they have ever stayed at the party walked down the hall where a few well sized rooms lay for rent. As the party searched for a clue they locked eyes on something that glinted from under the door of one of the rooms. The party found themselves knocking on that door which upon inspection had another of the same coin that had been left on their table at the base of the door.

As the door swung open they headed inside and sat around a table at the centre of the small room. As the old man hurried around and closed doors and curtains his posture changed until he was walking more upright. In the lantern light within the room his features seemed to relax more and by the time he sat down he looked like he could be a young nobleman instead of an aged pauper which is who he had appeared to be but a few moments ago.

He had a medium length beard speckled with grey through his cheeks and neck but a long stream of grey hair ran around his mouth and past his chin. His eyes were sharp, blue and intelligent and his hair was greying and messy – almost deliberately messy enough to make sure anyone without a keen eye for details would overlook him for being homeless or destitute.

‘Sorry for the delay in reaching out to you. I had to be sure you were the not the ones we seek.’ he paused as if doubting his statement for a moment. Shaking his head lightly he continued. ‘You can call me Lace and I am a member of Imgard’s Harpers branch. We have been tracking a few individuals who we believed were the cause of several missing peoples. However, as we moved in on their location we found their bodies – dead for about as long as we were tracking them.’ he thumbed at his temples.

‘For the last few weeks we have seen those same individuals around the city, and had reports of them showing up elsewhere through the network. I can’t make heads or tails of it but I suspect that its not good news.’ he paused to watch their faces. ‘This is where you lot come in. Neutral eyes to route out the infiltrators. We suspect that they know who we are and are making us look like fools but they wont know you. Besides. Everyone who is going missing are new faces to town, adventurers and the like. You would be both bait and trap.’

After the party left the room after talking to Lace they managed to lock eyes momentarily with someone who was descending the stairs. They had not heard anyone travel up them and as they saw the pale faced man with dark hair they failed to hear him descend into the room below. As they made it to the first few steps of the stairs they protected loudly at even the lightest of they party as they stood on the well worn down wood. This may be something Lace had an answer for or a suspicion about.

Thanks for joining me to meet Lace and potentially one of the antagonists for this weeks adventure. Infiltrators in Imgard

The city of Imgard has been known for its wealth of culture and diversity. However there is a new cause of an influx of people to this city with Infiltrators in Imgard appearing more and more often. The guard are powerless to stop the infiltration and have made a subtle call for aid amongst trusted channels.

So sit back, wait for the messenger for we are the infiltrators in Imgard with tonight’s adventure!

Imgard is the city of a hundred inns, taverns and pubs. Where all that you could want to sample is available and normally a price that the average sampler and purveyor of such goods would not be able to afford. However, there has been an increase in the illicit trade of ‘goods’ that are not deemed lawful to make within the walls of Imgard of late.

The guard are busy trying to bring down these crime rings while something darker slithers its way into the city. The guard have put out a call for aid to get to the bottom of a series of grisly murders and worse. Their role? Infiltrate the cult, group or gang that has infiltrated Imgard.

The Wonky Mule Tavern – Created in WordPress!?

The party drunk “Kicking Mules” at the Wonky Mule while they ate and waited for the person who was going to offer them a job. The drink was watered down and infused with some unforeseen herb or plant that gave it a sweet and spicy taste.

As they waited the thick scent of roasting meat, damp wood and sweaty patrons mingled together to create the now-familiar smell of Imgard. The low ceiling seemed to amplify the low chatter of voices from across the room including traders boasting or lamenting on their recent exploits, mercenaries discussing a job and even thieves and ruffians talking about a different kind of job.

Over the last two days they had waited for their informant they had noticed a few regulars. An old man sat in the corner of the tavern and chewed on tobacco while telling a tale of how he lost his chance at glory when he was young. The Bartender and her twin brother rushed around taking brews, like the kicking mule, to patrons as well as dealing with any trouble makers themselves. Tall and burly the pair had enough combined scars to match any seasoned adventurer.

A man sat in a booth not far from the old man dressed in finery that was not fitting of the establishment. Yet he drank with a few questionable figures that dished out cards to each other as well as those desperate enough to join an obvious con artist and his companions.

The noise of the skill-less bard enthusiastically started to belt out his latest melody to anyone who would listen caused a welcome change of pace as a cloaked stranger tripped near the parties table and caught themselves on the sturdy wood. ‘Excuse me, must have had too much of the swill’ the man said before tossing them a single coin and heading up stairs with a drunken amble. The coin and the man were what they were waiting for.

Waiting for the song to finish the party followed suit and went up stairs to meet with their employer, someone who valued secrecy more than they did promptness it seems.

Cave Invasion – Created in WordPress!?

As the party moved through the outskirts of Wyrehaven, the distant sounds of battle filled the airโ€”goblin war cries mixed with the terrified shouts of common folk. Rushing forward, they found a cart riddled with arrows, its horse lying dead with a spear jutting from its chest. A small group of humans struggled to defend themselves, their guard expertly using his shield to deflect goblin attacks while others jabbed spears at their attackers. Blinded by the harsh sunlight, the goblins could barely fight back as the party charged in. Within moments, the tide of battle had turned, and the goblins were either slain or scattered, leaving the humans safe but shaken.

The grateful travellers shared their story, explaining how they had been ambushed while passing near a tree-lined hill. Though they had expected the threat of bandits, goblins had caught them off guard. Their guard, Sven, admitted their luck in surviving the attack, particularly with the goblins’ poor ability to fight in bright light. As he hitched his own horse to the cart, the travellers urged the party to accompany them to Wyrehaven, where the local guard offered bounties on goblins and other troublesome creatures. They hinted that the party might find work in the city if they were looking for coin or reputation.

Arriving at Wyrehaven, the party followed Sven to the Iron Gauntletโ€™s barracks, the cityโ€™s guard and militia headquarters. While waiting for Sven to speak with the captain, they overheard rumours and speculation about recent events. When Sven returned, he was accompanied by a short woman with cropped hair and tired, calculating eyesโ€”Captain Jin. She acknowledged the party’s report and expressed concern over the unusual behaviour of the goblins. Sven agreed, recalling previous efforts to contain them when their numbers grew too aggressive. Jin then offered the party a mission: investigate why the goblins had moved so far from their usual territory. She warned of the risks but promised good rewards and provisions should they accept.

Not long after leaving Wyrehaven, Sven rejoined the party, explaining that Jin had sent him to assist and report back any findings. Taking the rear guard, he helped keep watch as they travelled. The party rode on horses provided by the guards, not the best but reliable enough. Their pursuit of the goblins quickly revealed signs of their retreat, with the wounded and dying left behind. As the trail led them deeper into the wilds, they encountered surviving goblins, leading to a brief skirmish before an uneasy night’s rest. Come dawn, the party examined the fallen, discovering strange woundsโ€”puncture marks like those from spiders or snakes, alongside old battle scars.

Pressing forward, they followed the goblins’ trail until they reached the foothills of the mountains. There, they found a small goblin camp abandoned only recently, as well as tracks belonging to various beastsโ€”lizards, spiders, wolves, and others resembling goblin footprints yet oddly different. As they entered the deserted goblin village within a large cave, the destruction was evident. Huts had been burned and torn apart, bones scattered across the ground, gnawed clean and cracked open. A pungent stench of musk, metal, and sulphur filled the air, making them gag. Whatever had taken over this place had rooted itself deep within, and if it had driven a goblin clan to flee, it could pose a far greater threat to the nearby settlements

Fowl Play – Created in WordPress!?

The town of Cherpa is on the brink of disaster. Every year, the grand Festival of the Iron-Shelled Hunt brings glory to the finest Cherpa hen handlers as they compete in retrieving the elusive shellfish from the depths of the great lake. But something is terribly wrongโ€”the Cherpa hens have vanished. Their empty roosts leave the town eerily silent, save for the desperate calls of their handlers. A mystery shrouds the lake, and the festival stands on the edge of ruin. The townโ€™s leaders have sent out a call for heroes to uncover the truth, recover the missing birds, and save Cherpaโ€™s most treasured tradition before time runs out.

Cherpa Mills – Smaller image – Created in Inkarnate

Cherpa is a peaceful village that thrives because of its great lake. The mighty Cherpa hen, a powerful bird that bonds with its handler, helps the villagers fish for the prized iron-shelled fish. Each year, the town holds a grand competition to showcase the skill and trust between handler and bird. But something has gone terribly wrongโ€”every Cherpa hen has disappeared without a trace. The festival hangs in the balance, and whispers of dark figures lurking near the lake spread through the town. Desperate, the elders offer a reward to anyone brave enough to solve the mystery.

The party arrives in Cherpa, expecting to see the legendary birds. Instead, they find a town bursting with festival sounds but missing its main attraction. As they explore, they overhear an argument between merchantsโ€”one of them, frustrated, claims the birds are truly gone. Then, an elderly halfling woman pleads for help. The mayor, Gerald, went to search for the missing hens but has not returned. Her young grandchildren beg the party to find their grandfather and bring him home.

Near the lake, the party finds Gerald fighting for his lifeโ€”two enormous frogs are trying to swallow him whole! After saving him and returning to town, the celebration resumes, but their relief is short-lived. A panicked child bursts through the door: “Help! Coreyโ€™s in trouble!” Chasing after Casey, the party arrives at an old windmill, its wooden beams broken and rotting. Inside, strange creatures prowl around a mass of frightened birds, shielding a crying child from the beasts’ attacks. The mystery deepens, and danger growsโ€”what force threatens Cherpaโ€™s beloved birds, and can the party save them before the festival is lost forever?
