Solbrook’s Environment

Tonight we are investigating Solbrook’s Environment and we start off with the ruins and the Ooze Temple itself. While I continue to create a little repository of environments to use I focus on reuse where possible and the mechanics can be twisted to suit on other adventures pretty easily – which I like.

So sit back, grab a coffee or other hot beverage and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Solbrook’s Environment

The Solbrook ruins have drawn the Scholars of Yole to come investigate the knowledge that the ruins may offer. With the party aiding in the search they may find useful secrets or even better – relics that explain what happened here. But be warned as there are traps littered through the rooms, the hallways and on the doors that smash, squish and pulverise those who get to close.

Further into the ruins where its danker and darker they might even encounter the cleaners of these rooms – oozes or slimes that search for food deep into the ruins as they creep outwards from the Ooze Temple.

The temple itself is surrounded by pools of slime and water as the creatures call not just the pools but the surfaces home and their hunting grounds. The largest of the slimes, those that create the others, call the pox marked – half consumed statue as their house and they defend it greedily. Which is a shame as the urns, boxes and other magically protected vessels hold items and wealth that would be a monumental find for anyone – let alone the Scholars of Yole.

Temple of Ooze

It’s not much of a surprise as many seasoned adventurers that dank, old placed house creatures most foul and the Temple of Ooze is no exception.

So grab a coffee, maybe a good club or some fire to combat tonight’s encounter!

D&D Statblocks for Black Pudding, Gelatinous cube, Gray Ooze – created in Tetra-cube.

The Gelatinous cube appears in the rooms that have been cleaned from yesterdays map night. After dispatching the large cube the other oozes will come out of the water when the party enter the larger chamber. The Black pudding has feasted on the large statue but caused it to become fully corroded with large holes appearing periodically throughout it.

The oozes are all blind within 60ft so they are ambush predators that don’t move until food is near by. This means there will be more of them the further the party stray from the path so balancing the encounter could be difficult if realism is desired.

The green oozes would live in the buildings and the water but I would have the Red oozes live in the statue and come out when the party is close. Starting combat hidden before they attack from hiding after activating slowly. They are slow creatures so having more of them prepared and enter the battlefield through an environmental action is a good way to spend fear to keep up the pressure and pace of the encounter, within reason of course.

Solbrook Ruins

The Solbrook Ruins spread deep under ground and reveal the source, or a source, of the plentiful bounties for the wheat on the surface above. But the ruins hold something more deadly.

So grab a coffee, grab some additional rope and maybe a towel as we check out tonight’s map!

Solbrook Ruins

Solbrook ruins – Created in Inkarnate.

A simple one tonight with a few layers, sections to get the visualisation effect that I wanted. Deep into the structure itself there is a shrine filled with mineral rich waters that seem to flow and move as if alive – a hint at what’s to come.

Some of the rooms are already open, the traps set off at the doors and the floors surprisingly clean. But there is still a lot of debris, refuse and more that litters the floor and rooms elsewhere in the map.

Thanks for joining for another map night this week. Don’t forget that we have a few more nights left this week so make sure to come back each day to see what I add to this adventure. And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Locked, Sealed, Forgotten

Tonight we encounter the force that was locked, sealed, forgotten and luckily lost beneath Solbrook. But now that the doors have been opened and with the traps being disabled things start to go bad.

So grab a coffee, maybe organise some extra guards to patrol the sink hole as we find trouble in tonight’s adventure!

The party had elected to return to the ruins the following day to explore the cleaner rooms deeper into the ruins below. As they settled into their tents, stored the small relics and treasures in wooden chests the party prepared to get some rest. They hadn’t encountered any thing dangerous in the buildings so far and the treasures they had recovered that the scholars had deemed not significant enough for them to keep for themselves but something was definitely wrong with the rooms they had uncovered.

The party had just started to get ready for bed when the sound of alarms rang out. Pulling on their gear and rushing towards the sound of panic the party found themselves amongst a group of scholars, merchants and a few mercenaries who guarded the sinkhole. At the feet of everyone, once the party pushed through the gathering, lay one of the guards who ensured no one descended the rope ladder closest to the statue.

The man was covered in burns, his clothes had singe marks and even his armour looked damaged in points as if covered in fire. However the scholars and a medic nearby announced his cause of death to be drowning. A pool of liquid had poured from his mouth when he had been found and most of it had been captured in a vial – to be studied later.

There were no witnesses to how this had happened and no evidence of foul play, monsters or acts of random magic. That was until the party examined the rope bridge and saw similar burns covered the extend of the rope. Following their gaze downwards they spotted a pool of liquid near the revealed entrance to the underground structure. Something had either fled to the building when spooked, or had come out of it when no one was looking.

Gathering their supplies and with a small group of scholars the party got ready for what lay ahead.

Thanks for dropping by for another night at my tabletop. Don’t forget as we passed the midway point we have maps and monsters, well creature stat blocks left for this week. So make sure you don’t forget to come back the last few remaining days this week to stay up to date with what’s happening at my tabletop. And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Scholars of Yole

The Scholars of Yole come from a society that specialises in the lost, forgotten and hidden. But the search for that what was lost by the Scholars of Yole comes at a cost, a price that they need adventurers to help their cause. As those that hide, lose and choose to forget want them to remain so and the knowledge, relics and discoveries normally do so for a reason.

So grab a coffee to go, maybe a notepad or book, as we meet the Scholars in tonight’s adventure!

Scholars of Yole

Scholars of Yole – Created in Copilot.

The large tent boasted some of the messiest living quarters that has ever been seen. Shelves and bookcases that stretched from ground to canvas roof lined most of the tents and even acted as dividers for bed quarters for the Scholars of Yole. In front of the chaotic walls of shelving, books, scrolls and trinkets was a large wooden desk that had a young man sitting behind it scribbling in a ledger.

As men and women walked up to the front desk the man behind took their name, their occupation and then offered them a sum of money. As the parties approached the desk they could see that the man was in fact a young adult dwarf with a well groomed beard, neat overcoat and glassed. ‘Name and occupation please.’ the man asked as they stood before the desk. Upon hearing that the were adventurers he looked up at the party. ‘All here as one hey? And just in time as we just uncovered the way in.’ he said as he scratched in some notes in his ledger before opening a different book.

‘Ten gold pieces a day, double if you see combat, twenty gold pieces if you are seriously hurt, a further twenty if you are mortally wounded.’ he offered and pushed out the book to see the terms and conditions listed out. It was noted that based on what they had discovered so far that they would expect a few days exploration, at most a week. As they considered the gold they noted a finders clause that gives them the claim to any equipment, artefacts, relics or treasure that is found within the construct that was not deemed to have significant importance.

The next two days went by without massive incident. The party acted as the scouts and vanguards for the scholars as they explored further into the buried passageways, halls and rooms. Each room had some form of trap before the door which was easy to detect and soon the party expected a new trap to be just before every door.

Each room progressively got in a worse state with the first one being rich in items of significant importance to the scholars. However, as they travelled deeper into the structure they found many of the artefacts destroyed and eaten away by time and decay. As they pushed into the third day they came across a room which was spotlessly clean with no evidence of the moulded, decayed wood, fabrics or metals that the previous rooms had.

However, the door to the next room was opened and the trap had been sprung without any sign of what had triggered it. As the scholars looked around the room to take notes the party noticed that the next room and hall was much the same, spotlessly clean with another open door and another set off trap. Something was not adding up.

Sunken Crops

Tonight we investigate the Sunken crops of a sleepy village called Solbrook as our party is the first, mostly, to the scene of a large sinkhole that devoured crops and revealed a buried structure.

So grab a coffee, an extra one hundred foot of rope as we dive into tonight’s adventure!

The quiet village of Solbrook is rocketed as a large sinkhole is revealed in the middle of their largest crops revealing a statue and some form of building in a cavern. What lies beneath will create history for the once-sleepy village as adventurers, scholars and more come to investigate the find and what lies beneath the fertile soil.

But something dwells deeper within the buildings, something has been growing, feeding for longer than anyone alive could possibly remember. And it’s always hungry.

Sunken Crops

Sunken Crops – created in WordPress.

The party could see the crowds and small tent-city that had sprung up just outside of Solbrook from the road. News and rumours had spread of the temple, or city, or something found buried beneath Solbrook rapidly and people had come for work, adventure and the chance to gain something.

Scholars had arrived in droves to look at the statue that was a hundred feet tall and unlike anything found to date. Workers had come to clean out the area and to make shelters, stores and more outside of the town to cope with the increase in people visiting the farming village. And lastly adventurers, much like the party themselves, had arrived with their senses of adventure and the prospect of wealth tantalisingly just at the end of a rope ladder beneath the surface of the crop of wheat that had been swallowed up.

The small village consisting of tent that sprung up near the sink hole had just about everything you could want. A series of tents in an enclosed wall operated like an Inn where the price to stay was cheap enough that anyone with coin could stay a few weeks easily. Tents filled with tables and laden with goods sold nearly anything an adventurer, scholar or worker could want or need when dealing with the sinkhole and beyond and there was even a gathering of tents that exclusively sold food and drink.

But the party were drawn to a large red tent, the Scholars had called for aid to push through the first door and beyond from seasoned adventurers as they believed they would need help. To answer the call would initially pay well and even beyond that they would likely have ongoing employment if they wished to help further – they just had to prove themselves useful to the scholars.

Don’t forget to come around for more adventure crafting tomorrow and the rest of the week as we continue to grow and expand this adventure into something memorable for our parties. Derja’s Shadow

Now for the next Zine of the year I present, in single page zine format, Derja’s Shadow. I still believe that these provide DMs a lot more freedom to tinker with it how they want and open up the adventures to be more free formed and flowing than the larger booklet zines.

There is references to the blog nights which are D&D centric but it can easily use the adversary stat-blocks highlighted in Friday nights post if you’re running Daggerheart. As always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube provides the stat-blocks for many of my D&D creatures.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, Derja’s Shadow, and that all your rolls are made with advantage.

Derja’s Shadow – Created in Copilot.

The party arrived in Miran after a long day of travel, drawn by the reputation of the Magus College. After settling in at the Little Bullette inn, they ventured through the crowded streets, weaving between busy merchants and wary pickpockets. The city pulsed with life, but also held an undercurrent of tension that grew stronger as they neared the College. Though famed for magical study, the institution resembled a sprawling library more than an academy, its towering halls sheltering knowledge as well as mystery. At the imposing darksteel gates, the bustle of the city faded, replaced by small groups of adventurers and watchful guards. It was clear that Miran had become a gathering point for those hunting answers, or hiding from danger.

Inside, the mood was heavier still. A tiefling mage and his companion, Sal, a battle-ready woman clad in chainmail, waited in line ahead of the party. After exchanging brief words, the tiefling departed down one hall in search of a book, leaving Sal chatting with the receptionist. Just minutes later, a cry of pain tore through the quiet, sending adventurers and guards racing toward the source. The party followed and found the tieflingโ€™s body, lifeless, twisted unnaturally, and separated from his glowing dagger, which now flickered only halfway with fading magic. The guards arrived and began their questioning. Sal, shaken but composed, explained that she had only just separated from Tamiel. Yet the grim scene and anxious whispers confirmed a truth that weighed on all of them: something, or someone, was hunting mages in Miran.

When Sal regained her composure, she met with the party to explain Tamielโ€™s dagger and their purpose in the city. The blade, dimmed now, had been gifted by a nighthag and was said to hold protective enchantments. Tamiel had come to Miran determined to investigate the mage killings. Sal, skilled with steel, had intended to back him up. But while Tamiel searched for a particular book, Sal had been distracted, caught in conversation with the receptionist. Tamiel, proud and impatient, pressed on alone. He hated to be wrong and had rushed toward whatever clue he believed might solve the mystery. Sal blamed herself for not noticing sooner.

She described trying to reach Tamiel with their sending stones, but when there was no reply, panic had set in. She ran through dim corridors, where the magical light globes had shattered and shadows crowded the floor. It wasnโ€™t until she reached the far side of the hallway that she saw Tamiel lying motionless. Sal stood with the party now, her sorrow clear in her voice and posture. Her tall frame and strong features made her seem unshakable, yet the pain in her eyes betrayed the weight of her loss. As they listened, Sal recalled a detail that struck her, how the shadows had seemed unnatural, heavy, and deliberate, almost watching her as she approached the body.

With Salโ€™s help, the party tracked down Jake, the receptionist, who hadnโ€™t returned to work since the incident. Outside his modest quarters, they heard him muttering nervously to himself before he opened the door. Jake looked startled and embarrassed but quickly straightened up and invited them in. He confessed that the recent killings had frightened him and claimed he was simply taking time off to avoid being next. He asked them not to tell the College he had been skipping his duties and promised to share what little he knew about Tamielโ€™s request.

Jake explained that the mage deaths had spread through all corners of the city, from shadowy alleys and taverns to crowded marketplaces and now, even within the College itself. Tamiel, he said, had been researching the ruined City of Derja and had asked Jake where to find records on the place. That was the last time he saw Tamiel. Jake had no further information but did ask the party to pass on his apologies to Sal. Though shaken, Jakeโ€™s account gave the party a new lead and suggested the threat was growing closer and far more unpredictable.

The party returned to the College and retraced Tamielโ€™s final steps. In the dim section of the library, they discovered the book Tamiel had sought, The City of Derja. Inside its worn pages were journal entries by scholars who had explored the ruins. They told of a sealed vault hidden deep within Derja, not protected by magic, but by intricate mechanical locks. Dwarves and gnomes had worked to open it, revealing a chamber lined with dark metal that disrupted magical ability. Mages inside could no longer connect to the weave. Carved runes and aged murals told the story of a city once great, now destroyed by a whirlwind that tore through its people, buildings, and land.

Derja had been a centre of magical brilliance, rivalled only by high elven cities of old. Now it stood as a grave to magic itself. At the vaultโ€™s heart sat a large vase made from the same dark metal, its surface corroded and fractured over time. The final journal entries grew grim. After removing the artefact from the vault, those involved began to vanish. Mages reported being haunted by malevolent spirits. Eventually, many were found dead with their enchanted belongings lying lifeless beside them. The curse, it seemed, hunted those who carried Derjaโ€™s secrets and defied its silence. The scholars urged that the city be left untouched, its legacy protected, and its wrath feared.

Derja’s Curse

Tonight we have the outcome of Derja’s curse with these environment and adversary stat blocks for the extra detail Saturday additional post.

So sit back, grab a coffee or other hot beverage and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Derja’s Curse

529SaDeCu

The library itself has become the house to a curse, which we explored last night in Shadows and Magic eaters, and tonight we reveal the environment that helps to store, conceal and house cursed objects and the creatures that come with them. We have two Environments with Cursed Library giving an ability for the PCs to find the information they seek but also, we have darkness at every corner which looks to create smaller adversaries that stalk, hunt and impede the party at every turn.

However Shadows are not particularly powerful especially for a Tier 3 encounter so the party should find these are more nuisances rather than dangers that they have to face. Derja’s curse makes them more threatening with the ability to spend a fear to impose disadvantage on attacks when magic damage is used as the relics designed to repel and restrict the use of magic react to their abilities. This can find the party having to apply different tactics or look at creative ways to avoid the curse if possible.

It also beefs up the adversaries for this encounter substantially but not too much, I hope.
