Food for the trees

Welcome to another Friday night filled with humans and creatures, both of which are food for the trees. Some are just evidence that you don’t need to make a new stat block or a homebrew monster from scratch. Change its name and something about it and you have a new creature to encounter. Others are a bit more unique. Without giving anything away let’s roll into tonight’s content – Stat blocks!

Poachers

The poacher is a blight on society, where there are laws that govern how creatures can be treated. In reality they are men and women who have trained in the tracking and capturing of creatures using the tools that they have available to them. These men and women prowl the woods, plains and other wild places looking for their targets. Then, acting as a cohesive pack they strike and capture their prey, nearly without fail.

Poachers – created in tetra-cube

Poacher boss – Tarbin ‘Longshot’ Amarog

The leader of the poachers, Tarbin, is as experienced in hunting and capturing beasts and monstrosities as a gladiator is at fighting. As he steps in front of the party his confidence and command exude from him. It’s not hard to see how even the beasts cower before such a man as he is the pack alpha out here.

Tarbin ‘Longshot’ Amarog- Created in Tetra-cube.

Gibbering Tree

As the woods are deep and wide so are the types of flora and fauna. The sound of something moving through the air is the first sense of danger that the party encounter before the muttering begins. A manic, confused gibbering that seems to come from all around them as these large vine like whips strike at them. The gibbering grows in intensity the more the striking vines connect with the party, and a large tree can be seen near by if the vines are followed.

Thoughts

Its been an interesting ride and I got to play with some fun creatures this week as I set up the adventure. The poachers were always going to be included in the mix, but, the creatures are just some of the random ones that may be encountered amongst the dark canopy. These creatures, the food for the woods, are both the provider of food and the food itself. Hunting other creatures and eventually dying themselves to be consumed by the carnivorous plants within.

The Gibbering tree is something I wanted to express this week. A creature that attacks from a range and tries to ensnare its prey in its vines. If its attacks are successful then the maddening muttering commences. The namesake of the woods are revealed.

Thanks again for joining me for another Friday Fight-night! In fact tonight was also movie night for me and I got to enjoy the new D&D movie!

So for those who have watched the movie there are some elements that are just perfect for a heist. And some that I just cant resist in my encounters. Not one bit. So thank you for joining but don’t forget to come back this weekend for the finale of the week. And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Gibbering Woods Camp

Welcome to another Thursday night where we look at the maps for the week and tonight we have two variations of the Gibbering Woods Camp! The idea behind this is the party has control over when they go through the camp. This means that I need to have a map prepared for both day time and night time depending on what the players decide. This is one of the harder parts of a heist is being prepared for more than just one outcome. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure… maps!

The Gibbering Woods Camp

313ThTGiWoCa

Now whether we have night time or daytime map we have a few things to note. Several cages are inside the camp compound that has 15 foot high walls. There are only a handful of tents but they look to be able to fit quite a few people. So this means that there may be more people elsewhere for a large operation such as this one.

The large central tent makes it hard to see what’s kept inside. The high walls however do have potential breach points, either the front gates, spiked as they are, will enable people to get past them. Or the several wall breaches that could occur via either ladders, ropes or utilising the trees. But be careful where you jump over as there may be a hungry creature in the crate that you land on top of.

Thanks for joining me tonight for the maps for this weeks heist mission. Tomorrow we will look into the creature stat-blocks that we may be encountering as well as some that we will definitely be. I will leave it up to you to decide which is which. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow and this weekend and make sure to set aside some time for your own tabletop. The Golden hourglass Heist

Tonight and I have created a second zine for this week and its a heist! So enjoy the adventure, The Golden hourglass Heist. This adventure can be used system agnostic as we explore other RPGs out there other than D&D. So please adjust to what ever creatures you are using in your adventure! However as always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube currently provides the stat-blocks for creatures in this adventure.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, The Golden hourglass Heist. If you like this format please let me know and I hope you enjoy.

The Golden Hourglass

The Golden Hourglass – Created in Nightcafe.studio.

The party have found themselves in need of information, or an item that will help their ultimate quest. However, where to find such things are normally the hardest questions to answer. Luckily there is an answer in the city known as Emago.

Within Emago lies a shady part of town that even the Emerald Watch turns a blind eye to. A place where even the shadows owe a single man money or a favour. Westley Parn is known by some as the keeper and others as the taker. He provides any service, any piece of information and can source nearly any artefact for someone who needs his services. However there is a price for such things and with Westley they are not cheap.

Westley Parn has requested that the bring him the Golden Hourglass. IT is a work of art from a dwarven glass blower, an elven carpenter and a gnome enchanter of some renown. Its the size of a tankard and its true purpose is unknown, but itโ€™s said that who ever owns the hourglass fall to madness and paranoia before, eventual and preventable death. As such the hourglass is locked in a padded chest, guarded by several guards and never stays in the same place more than one night if they can help it.

Allies and Opponents of the Gibbering Woods

Wednesday has come around once more and this week we get a further glimpse of more Allies and Opponents of the Gibbering Woods. This week is more than just the humanoids involved there is also a fair risk of beasts being unleashed as nature fights back!. So sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Complications, Twists and Opportunities

The complications that can go wrong in a heist are long and varied. Betrayal, competing parties or the heist object itself can all pose a threat or risk. Things happening on the fly which make the carefully laid out plan need a rapid twist or shift to something new.

  1. It’s just business. One of the supporters and business partners of Sasha is the one who hired the poachers. The party identify him at the camp when they go to investigate and he makes the poachers aware that she was organising the eggs to be liberated.
  2. There are more than just eggs in that tent. Poachers poach things and it goes without saying that they may have either hunting companions or have captured dangerous creatures. If they were to get out inside the poachers compound it would spell disaster for everyone.
  3. Denizens of the woods. The woods are home to a variety of creatures. Basilisks, owlbears, dire wolves, giant snakes and other creatures call its dank undergrowth home. The egg could be from any one of these creatures (maybe not wolves cause.. you know.. biology) and these creatures may also be near the poachers compound. It’s risky business.
  4. The Woods fight back. The trees themselves are what give the gibbering woods its name. These trees house plants that are extremely fast growing and predatory. Many skeletons have been found tangled up in vines with the remnants of clothes, items and pox-marked weapons laying near by. The woods themselves are dangerous.
  5. It’s hatching season… enough should be said on this twist…

Thoughts

Now, some of these may just be something random that happen, others may be definite. But the idea behind heists is to plan for as many different things and to have something for any scenario so that when the party improvise, you can too. You want the party to have a mixture of social and skill checks, roleplay and combat in order to get the full value from a heist. The above is a good sprinkling of a few items that will flesh out the adventure. In fact I believe it will grant us the opportunity to do something more with our adventure this week.

Thanks for visiting and reading tonight. However, tonight we also have something else special happening – so stay tuned for another post! But don’t forget to come back tomorrow as with heists, what I have found, is that the maps take ages. So I look forward to seeing what I can create for the adventure tomorrow. Don’t forget that with this weekend quickly approaching to set aside some time for your own tabletop. And while you’re at it, maybe go back and watch the (albeit cringe worthy) old D&D movies in addition to the new one that’s out. I will never forget Damodar or Snails and they still inspire NPCs until this very day. And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Patron and the Poachers

Another Tuesday has come around and that means I am welcoming you to another set of NPCs, including the Patron and the Poachers. We are introduced by the business lady, come noblewoman who is hiring the party to do the good deed at the Gibbering woods as well as her adversary. The Leader of the Crimson Collar, Tarbin is no pushover and his men are some of the meanest poachers around. But before I get too deep into the details of tonight we best roll on with the adventure!

The Patron and the Poachers

313TuTPaATPo

Now Sasha, her motivations and overall personality are fit for the adventure. However if Tarbin isn’t to your liking any NPC can do there as long as they can fit the bill. There is always a twist with my adventures and this week is no different. In fact I have a few other NPC portrait throwbacks for potential allies and adversaries. The aim of all NPCs I produce is that they can fit into other campaigns and other adventures. To produce reusable content is part of my goal for this blog after all.

Sasha Flerr

Sasha Flerr – Created in Artbreeder.

Now the patron of the party this week is a cunning businesswoman who has worked her way up from nearly nothing. Sasha is a driven businesswoman who is passionate about protecting the people of her city as well as the environment. She has worked for many years to get to where she is today and she is expected to be made a noblewoman in the coming weeks. That is if she gets the support of the crown and council.

Despite her drive to cement her legacy she has also formed a bond with the druids and shepherds of the Gibbering woods. Once living nearby to them she understands the danger and wonder that the woods can produce. She grew up with several experiences working with the patrons and the poachers. All of who had worked the woods for personal gain. Yet, despite some of her wealth being generated from it, she wants its protected.

Tarbin Longshot Amarog

Tarbin Longshot Amarog – Created in Artbreeder.

Now Tarbin has been a hunter for most of his life and most of that was in the Gibbering woods. Hunting and trapping animals isn’t the only thing he has aimed his longbow at and he is known to also pick up bounty hunting as well. Although not an evil person he dislikes what the law is doing to his business and that of his men’s livelihood. So when someone approached him offering him a job that would pay him twice as much as what he could earn in a year he couldn’t refuse.

Henchmen and acquaintances

Thanks for joining me tonight as we looked at the patrons and the poachers for this weeks heist adventure. I hope that you will continue to join me for the rest of the week as I expand the adventure further. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Egg Extraction

Welcome to the week leading up to, well for me, the viewing of the new D&D movie and in spirit of this I have declared it heist week! This week we are looking at a tricky one, the Egg Extraction, another heist that I will produce this week for the weekend. So in order for me to get to the rendezvous on time we better roll into tonight’s adventure!

The Egg Extraction

313MoTEgEx

Bandit Camp near the Gibbering woods – created in nightcafe.studio

The Setting – Poachers Hideout inside the Gibbering Woods

The party have been approached due to their ability to deliver. To put it frankly by the client, there are no others who come close to their renown and skill. However this may be a tactic to get the party to do something highly dangerous with the wrong crowd of people. Their Patron, a business woman who is trying to outlaw poaching in a nearby forest has gotten word that a local poaching and smuggling ring has a new batch of merchandise for sale. She doesn’t know what it is exactly but knows that there are eggs, large eggs that appear to have been stolen from the Gibbering woods.

The Target – The Egg Extraction

As with all things that are dangerous the eggs are rumoured to be heavily guarded, extremely valuable. Their patron believes that its eggs for a wild beast who calls the woods home and based on the rumoured size of them. Likely very dangerous. The job is to retrieve the eggs and bring take them to the woods. She has organised some druids of the forest to take carriage of them to ensure that they are taken home before the parent, or parents decide to seek revenge.

The Path – Scouts hand drawn Map

The party are provided a map and sketched floorplan of the hideout. They also have some information on the movement of guards, the buildings and where key locations are located. But the poachers began to suspect something and the scout wasn’t able to look inside the main tent. There is something unnerving about it but it should be a walk in the park for experienced liberators of unjustly taken goods.

The People – The Crimson Collar

The Crimson Collar are a famous group who have caused trouble for decades. They are also one of the groups that are responsible for the local king and council in outlawing poachers in the Gibbering Woods. They are a mixture of hunters, adventurers and outlaws who have called this group home. In the eyes of the patron, they should be brought to justice in the eyes of the law. But if some happen to fall while investigating their activities and retrieving the eggs so be it.

The Consequences and Twists

The Gibbering woods used to be a dark place filled with roaming bandits and outcasts. The sounds from the forest at night used to send people mad and those who lived within or near it reported a manic gibbering sound from the trees. However it was later found out to be some sort of owl that made these sounds.

After the woods were protected by the crown and the businesses in the local city it became a more pleasant place to be around. However, there is still extreme danger within its dark trunks and green canopy. Caution is advised as with the Egg Extraction for a potentially dangerous parent anything can happen. The Party should be prepared for anything.

Thoughts

I am excited to keep this format going and with the release of the D&D movie this week I am more so. I am slightly disappointed that I didn’t get the other heist out before this. But time restrictions and a busy weekend means that this week we get a staggered double-event for heists!

I get to use one of my favourite creatures for this weeks adventure. One of the lil’ cute critters that really cemented my adoration for the game and one that I wanted my fighter to tame to have as an ally all those years ago. I find the heist format plays nicely with the normal adventure format I do.

The format

A plot, a collection of the normal information I would consider for Mondays.

The people involved, a quest giver or patron. A rival group or target to have something retrieved from. Or even someone who needs to be heisted from a difficult situation.

A twist or set of consequences for the heist. Captured simply for the the Monday night snapshot but expanded upon more on Wednesday.

A map, or maps, that I generally provide on Thursday. This one I find harder to do in heist format as you need specific maps and locations. Multiple entry and exit points, multiple paths and normally secret entries or exits that the party hasn’t considered yet. This makes Thursday nights a bit harder to juggle.

And Friday.. Traps, creatures, encounters. If things go wrong fisticuffs can be the next best solution. In fact, An all out brawl can be a great distraction as well.

Thanks for visiting and getting introduced with this weeks heist adventure. As this is heist week I hope that by Saturday I will have two adventures ready for the weekend for some local events. But don’t forget to come back each day to watch the heist grow and get some insight into why I have certain parts. This is a new format for me and I think I will bring it back every so often. So don’t forge to visit tomorrow and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Mad King’s Queen

Tonight and I have created another zine for this weeks adventure, The Mad King’s Queen.

The Mad King’s Queen

The Mad King’s Queen- Created in Nightcafe.studio.

The people of Rueven were ruled by a vicious tyrant and his elven queen for decades. When a young ambitious knight and his men assaulted the castle and finished this reign of terror the kingdom rejoiced. Within a week the knight was declared the new king of the city and he promised to always do the right thing by the people of the kingdom.ย

However not all were pleased. After the last and most brutal attempt on his life his demeanour changed and the stoic knight began to claim that he had a queen, one that had never been seen and one where there was no ceremony.ย  The people thought his moment of madness would pass as he recovered from the assassination attempt but as the years passed it did not. Yet despite his madness he held true his oath and was still a just and gracious king who put the needs of his people first.ย

Every year he celebrates Celestes, his Queenโ€™s, birthday with a feast that the kingdom is invited to partake in, funded by the kingโ€™s treasury. But There is a rumour that the kingโ€™s madness has grown and that the assassination attempt years ago has left him unfit to rule. A growing discontent has formed in pockets of the kingdom and there has been a more vicious rumour. That the king isnโ€™t mad and that there is a hidden power behind the throne, a darkness that not even the once just knight can wrestle from.

The Golden Hourglass

Welcome to a surprise night where tonight we are looking at an offer, an exchange of goods, wealth or inspiration for the Golden Hourglass. To make a very exciting week for us D&D, and RPG aficionados I am going to have a shot at making a heist this week. That’s right, its heist week coming up and I wanted to double down on it before the sands of in the hourglass run out! Well in order for us to make it on time, let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!.

The Golden Hourglass

312SaTGoHo

The Setting – City Emago

Westley Parn is the biggest merchant, and black market dealer in the city. What ever you want to have, learn or have done he can sell it to you. So prominent is his influence and growing power that the city guard leave him alone, as they too are one of his customers.

However, sometimes the price he asks for is odd. A secret, a single ring, a name or a trinket. Something that almost no one would miss. But they all are part of his plan and a master of planning he is.

The Target – The Golden Hourglass

Westley Parn has requested that the bring him the Golden Hourglass. IT is a work of art from a dwarven glass blower, an elven carpenter and a gnome enchanter of some renown. Its the size of a tankard and its true purpose is unknown, but it’s said that who ever owns the hourglass fall to madness and paranoia before, eventual and preventable death. As such the hourglass is locked in a padded chest, guarded by several guards and never stays in the same place more than one night if they can help it.

The Path – Unknown…. for now

The Hourglass is on its way out of the city. Taking an unknown path but the people who are hired as guards for the escort of the artefact are the well known Brenthan Brothers. The city has somewhat wide streets and a sewer system that runs under the city itself.

The People – The Brenthan Brothers

The Brenthan Brothers are in fact, brothers. Mrs Brenthan had seven boys and two girls. While the girls followed in their parents footsteps to run a shop the brothers joined the military one after another. Eventually they left the military to start a mercenary group which grew past just the brothers. Their influence spread and soon they had many cities they worked out of.

Bryce, Kryn and their sellswords are the two who were approached to escort the golden hourglass out of the city.

Kryn is extremely professional and thorough and leaps to attention at the slightest sense of danger. Kryn is the second oldest Brenthen boy and as such constantly lives in the shadow of his older brother. Because of this he strives to be seen as better, and he is even if the others don’t see it. Yet.

Bryce on the other hand relaxed and calm to the point of being seen as lazy. He is the youngest and at times prefers to use his fame as a Archer and swordsman to win the hearts and affection of the public.

The Consequences and Twists

Rumour of the priceless artefact leaving the safety of the manor it resided in has spread wide. There are more parties than Westley Parn and the mercenaries with a vested interest in the golden hourglass. But will they be able to beat the parties to the punch line or will the artefact fall through their fingers like grains of sand.

Thoughts

Oh boy. The second surprise for this weekend. A double event! I hope I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew but we will have to see.

The heist format is a bit harder to plan for. Many blogs and other experienced DMs ask for a general “What, where, who, when and why” format which describes the scene and what can happen. But not to the same degree as what we create normally. This Means the success and enjoyment of the adventure is purely in their hands.

So in order for us to facilitate this adventure we need to look at three parts, traditionally two but hear me out.

The Planning and Execution of the plan. But if we want to double down there is two halves to the planning.

Scouting and mapping. Understanding the location, drawing a map, watching movements and the like. To know how to pull off a heist is to know the pattern of what you want to steal.

The preparations. Buying goods and equipment, the bribing of guards, innkeepers, peasants and merchants, infiltration of a party lost. What ever you need to do to pull it off.

The execution. The doing, game time. Following the plan as a team or group of individuals, it happens, to achieve the plan. This can be daunting to a DM as its nearly full improv. But if you can pull it off, its worth it.

Thanks for visiting and taking a sneak peak at the heist adventure. Tomorrow I hope to see you visit again for two adventures being published! Wish me luck! So don’t forge to visit tomorrow and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Infiltrators and Competitors

Another fight-night is here and this week we look at infiltrators and competitors of the party and their mission. Just as the King can hear his queen talking to him there are a few who walk the halls aware that the queen is real. And also, aware of just what the queen is. Intrigued? Well I’d hope so. In fact let’s not delay any longer and let’s roll into tonight’s content – Stat blocks!

Infiltrators and Competitors

312FrInACo

Scouts

The halls to the bedrooms and rooms away form the party thrum with the noise from the feast. However despite the dim and the constant chorus of laughter the sounds of uncareful footsteps can be heard. Up ahead, a shadow of a human sized created lies against the wall. Approaching it carefully and drawing a weapon the party approach the figure, however there is a problem. The figure is a statue with a hat placed carefully on it. The astute in the party hear the faintest scrape from an oiled scabbard as daggers and blades are drawn from concealed places. It seems that the party have found the infiltrators and competitors.

Party Infiltrator (Bandit) – created in tetra-cube

The backup Plan

The infiltrators had run this way, past the doors to the kitchens, past the study and a meeting room and towards a large set of double doors. Careful to not leave a mess, as Park had instructed, the unconscious men were secured in a locked room. As they moved to the double doors they swung open and they found themselves staring at those who had escaped as well as a goliath of a man. Large rippling muscles gripped a crossbow in his hand. The darkened weapon was complemented with a black mace that swung from his hip.

The Hired Muscle (Thug) – Created in Tetra-cube.

The Boss

As the party turn to leave the room with the evidence that Park had asked them to retrieve they head the door open and close rapidly behind them. Este, the maid that they were introduced to earlier by Park looked terrified at them as she walked towards them. Looking nervous she wet her lips before checking behind the curtains, having noticed the unconscious bodies in the hallway. “I was being followed. But I thought I could lose the man on the way here but I lost them instead. I believe he was heading this way but I needed to confirm that he hadn’t made it into the kings bedroom.. But you are here.. Why are you in here?”

“Because they too are after what I am. They want to expose the kings madness for what it is. Truth.” a man said from the doorway, the latch hadn’t even made a sound. “The king does have a queen, Oh yes. A hidden Queen. One that hides in plain sight, one that delights in the infiltrators and competitors that she enticed to her web. A deceiver queen amongst all who poisoned the mind of a man she was sent to kill and instead wed him in secret.” the man said as he effortlessly drew out a longsword.

“I don’t know what you speak of…” the maid Este began to stutter “the king..”

“You don’t need to play coy with me Celeste. I am an envoy of the kings sanity. One who saw through your charade and who has waited for this moment. You are the assassin. You are the hidden queen!”

Lark Grundfello – The Boss – Created in Tetra-cube.

Thoughts

I honestly struggled to not reveal who the queen was on Wednesday. But we find ourselves in an interesting situation. The Queen has been revealed but some accusations have been laid on the table. But regardless who the party believe Lark wont let any of them leave alive.

Thanks again for joining me for another Friday Fight-night! Tonight as we prepare for the end of the weekend we looked at the actors in this intricate dance. But that’s not all we found. So don’t forget to come back this weekend for the final piece in the puzzle. Don’t forget to let me know your thoughts on this weeks content and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Draws the Eye

Welcome to Thursday night where tonight we look at what draws the eye in the castle! These little things elude to the overall plot, the twist and the extra little bits that make this adventure fun. However this can’t be all. We have a few other things to explore, some to reveal this weekend and some things below to go through tonight. So let’s not spend time away from the main event and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Draws the Eye

312ThDrTEy

The bedroom

The Kings bedroom – created in NightCafe

The kings bedroom is well lit with a table to one side of the wall. A tangle of fine sheets cover a large bed opposite it and a wardrobe lies open with a mixture of men’s and women’s clothes. Next to the bed is a chest that is mostly covered by a blanket.

The desk is well made from dark wood and brass. On top of it lies several papers in various stages of being written as well as an open ink bottle and quill. The rug that covers the ground is comfortable and a quick glance reveals that it would be quite expensive.

The dining hall

The Dining hall – created in Nightcafe

The cacophony of sound that comes from the dining hall is immense. In fact it is so loud in here that even without the masks muffling the sound of peoples voices you need to lean into people to hear their conversations. The King and Queen sit at the end of the table in masks as guests come to greet them. However peaceful it looks there are some obvious guards dressed and scattered amongst the guests, almost too obvious. In fact if anyone with a keen eye for these types of things cared to look they would notice that there are many things that are out of place. However despite these things that draw the eye the room is merry. The table is well stocked with food and drink and the company is overall pleasant.

Thanks for joining me tonight for some additional content. With this week somehow coming to an end I want to thank you all for joining me this week. Now don’t forget to come back each day for the rest of this week as wrap it up. And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,
