Welcome to the bonus content night aptly named, Expanded Battlefield – Ice Queen, where we feature a… well expanded battlefield for our battle with the Ice Queen. Tonight we find ourselves with 3 more maps to situate around our initial one from Sieged under snow. So Enjoy!
Expanded Battlefield – Ice Queen

West map (West 1)
More forest-y than the other maps this one would be a good candidate for a “breached wall” part of the battle. Where the wall crumbles and Oni, undead and other creatures who are fighting spill into the woods past the wall. This map links in immediately left of the main map and south (under) west 2 where the walls should just line up nicely.
With a more direct imposing section of the wall into the map this map goes in the top left hand side of the 4. A good height on the tower it enables archers and those with ranged capabilities to defend the area and take down enemies with relative safety. Until the tower crumbles that is.
Directly north above our first battle map this one here shows what’s beyond the ice queen and is the direct path to the Shadows Throne. Perhaps good for showing where enemies are or how long until they reach the wall (or the Yuki-onna) this map adds more depth into the battlefield.
A nice short one tonight with some additional easy to do maps. However by using Inkarnate to produce these maps I was able to use the same background colours and layers and keep the sizing the same. In fact a lot of the wall section, trees, bodies and hills are the same scale as I duplicated the first image. This enabled me to make sure the scale was consistent across all the maps.
Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for maybe a random encounter and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage, The Brazen Wolfe
Welcome to Wednesday night where we look at Afflictions true nature, the madness that was spread from the Wrath Wraith. Tonight we look at Hatoi Yuon and get a delve deeper into what she saw, what she felt and what she remembers from being afflicted.
Hatoi sat down and held onto the cup of warmed liquor like it was an old friend. After some time and the gathering of people around her sat in silence she looked up and spoke. “I don’t remember much before the madness overtook me but I do remember being bound and lead into the infirmary.” she began staring at the cup. “I don’t remember what I was doing but I do remember flashes of a lit room encased by dark rock. Oni and other minions of The Shadow were walking around the rooms and bowing to me. The strangest thing is that I felt powerful when they bowed. It was something I craved and something that I lived for.”
“The madness gave you visions? Hallucinations?” the guard Gin asked before Captain Hou and several others present glared at him to be silent.
“No. It was more than that. I remember flashes of the battlefield, commanding troops as if I was hovering over the shoulder of a lady in white.” Hatoi blushed at this “to me she was the most beautiful and powerful woman I had ever seen and I helped her… somehow to achieve what she wanted to do.” she continued. “That’s when I realised. I was feeling what the Shadow was feeling and seeing what it was. When you,” she nodded towards the party, “slew the Yuki-onna I felt a great exhaustion. A crippling feeling of powerlessness as the energy I was pouring into the Yuki-onna was ripped away.”
“The same thing happened when we fought the Shadow Blessed Oni…” Kyoko said. “When she was defeated the shadow energy didn’t return. It was destroyed”
As the party absorbed what was being said the sounds of celebration could be heard from the wall outside. The Oni, undead or Spirit folk hadn’t returned. Reports had come from other parts of the wall that spirit folk had been seen celebrating in tribal manners – almost joyous that the Yuki-onna had been defeated.
“Well. I think this much is clear. The Shadow is weakened and its keep lies open and vulnerable. What do we do about it?” Kyoko asked looking around those gathered at the table.
A nice easy one tonight as we talk and get some insight into the afflictions true nature. Being a puppet for the Shadow mustn’t be a fun thing and I think it leaves us with an interesting opportunity to explore. What would happen if one of the players had been afflicted?
Food for thought and perhaps something to add into the end of month writeup. Don’t forget to come back the next few nights, last nights of the month in fact and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage, The Brazen Wolfe
Welcome to the bonus week Tuesday where tonight I wanted to have another go at Artbreeder and have some fun creating weird stuff. One such outcome was the image of the mountains known as The Shadows Throne. Oh and a super creepy image of The Shadow itself. Enjoy!
It’s hard to find images of a mountain that recently had a great swath of its peak crack and fall to the ground below. Let alone one that is glowing red. This image however after toying around with a few cross breeds and manipulation of what else was out there came up a winner in what could constitute the image I was going for. So I give to you, The Shadows Throne.
This image should hopefully bring thoughts of a grand conflict to the foremind of our players as they gaze upon its shattered and discoloured peaks. That is in fact the reason I create images for these campaigns to help the players and the DM get into the world. Sink in and really feel what it would be like for their characters. Immersion is a big thing for me and I hope the next image does just that too
Now apart from maybe the occasional slipup The Shadow does not have a gender. Blending a previously used image used to create Mugrave’s imagery as well as a dark shadowy image I give you. The Shadows Avatar.
This is hopefully enough to give the players a shiver down their spine and create that atmosphere where we don’t quite know what’s going to happen. But we are all there for the ride regardless.
The Shadow is more-or-less a minor deity and to simply walk upon this world is not an option. But to have a mortal body be a vessel for your power, that’s something we can get behind.
As we get closer to the end of the month I find myself looking at where I can add, tweak, correct or change content. Tonight I wanted to add something to help describe some events or narrative description that could come as a result of the defeat of Yukri. Also, with those afflicted, who weren’t slain, recovering from their madness they have some more details to reveal… But that can wait for another night so don’t forget to come back for that. And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage, The Brazen Wolfe
Welcome to the bonus week leading up to the end of the month. Tonight I wanted to touch briefly on the aftermath, the immediate outcome of the defeat of the Yuki-onna (Yukri Toshi – the Ice Queen). The call of darkness is strongest just before the coming dawn, or so some say, and in this case the party get to witness it first hand.
Call of Darkness
243MoCaOfDa
As the Yuki-onna fell to the ground and the remnants of ice cold ichor flowed from her wounds the battlefield fell silent. Then with the sound of a great exhale a gust of wind blew with such ferocity that the wisps of the shadowy smoke that hung to the ground and creatures were sucked into a vortex of wind which hurtled back towards one of the large peaks in the Shadowy mountain ranges. Then, bit by bit the clouds above the wall shifted and sunlight shone down upon the warriors, oni and spirit-folk.
With a shambling upheaval the undead fell to the ground, the dark magics that animated their bodies banished. The spirit folk looked around in fear and confusion before cheering as one and running for the hills. Most dropping their weapons.
The Oni however bellowed for a retreat and fled towards the peak in which the shadow-laden wind retreated to. That’s when the first tremor was felt.
Gradually a low murmur turned into a deep sorrowful moan as the ground itself seemed to lament the passing of the Ice queen. Then with a building of pitch the crescendo was reached and an almighty ping was both heard and felt as a monumental portion of the Shadows Mountainous peak sheared clear from the mountain itself. As the rock hit the ground it took a few heartbeats before the shockwave was felt and an colossal boom was heard for miles around. Just after the ringing in peoples ears started to diminish a large wave of dust moved across the land and stopped just a few hundred feet from the party and the wall.
The Shadows Throne. The unholy seat of power from where it commanded its troops and moved its pieces in the grand game lay open. A faint red glow could be seen coming from beyond the cloud of dust in the open wound of the mountain.
“The way is open to the mountains heart, to the Shadows throne.” Kyoko said as she appeared at the parties side. “We have never been able to penetrate the mountains defences. But now it looks like we have a chance to defeat the shadow. Killing it or pushing it from these lands for good.”
As the wall guards rejoiced a horn bellowed from the top “Captain!” Gin Seng called. “Officer Yuon has awakened!” With that Captain Hou, his daughter, Kyoko and the party rushed towards the wall. Officer Yuon was one of the afflicted who had been confined to the infirmary since the parties first encounter with the Wrath Wraith.
As the party stepped on top of the wall, great sheets of rough ice made for an easy way up, Gin ran to meet them.
“Captain! She says she has seen it. A way into the throne room. A way to the Shadow its self.” he said breathlessly. “and…” he paused as he looked at those gathered “she says it is vulnerable.”
Thoughts.
The last of the end of this years campaign where we reach our crescendo with a dungeon delve. It’s been a bit of a wild ride and I still have so many things that I want to achieve. But the format of the blog is that I have a certain amount of time, and only so many hours a day to write so I am pleased at where we are at and what is left.
Another night down and only 37 more nights of content for this years adventure. I am truly thankful that you have joined me on this adventure and this little project of mine. I want to finish the last month on a bit of a high so this week I will be looking to produce two bits of content. The extra content for the month and potentially something a bit more spooky. So make sure to visit each not between now and the end of the month and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage, The Brazen Wolfe
Welcome to the last weekly write-up for October where we look at the siege of the Ice queen. This week finds the party at the mercy from the Yuki-onna as she commands a frontal assault on the wall. Perhaps the Ice Queens rage and fear of defeat will make her vulnerable it’s not the same little humans that fought her last time.
As the Onikage snorted with barely contained violence and hunger, Yukri watched the humans from its back. The yuki-onna knew that the Shadow, the one who had given her powers to rule as the Ice Queen, wanted these humans dead. But killing these humans had proven difficult, even the enlisted help from the Laelรณng but the vain beast failed.
โQueen. The humans have escaped back on top of the wall. They have powerful weapons and we have to retreatโฆโ a hesitant voice spoke from her side. The Oni looked down at its feet and braced for the worst but it didnโt come. A second voice spoke, much older, darker and more influential than the lowly Oni.
โYou must stop them. Those weapons are cursed by the dragons and elves of old. Their magic has the power to bring down your kingdom. You must kill the wielders and stop them from taking everything you have fought forโ The Shadow whispered in her ear. The sound of its voice so filled with power and malice that all other noises, thoughts and reason drifted from her mind. Eventually the sounds of screams, pleading and The Shadows intent washed her thoughts away until there was nothing left but overwhelming rage.
All she had worked for. All she had sacrificed and for what? A group of humans and magic swords to take it from her. Not likely. She watched her warriors and the creatures she commanded flee from the wall, all except the mindless undead, and her frustration grew. The frustration and rage boiled up within the Yuki-onna and it overflowed. Screaming her hatred and rage across the battlefield her intensity of her thoughts mixed with her magical abilities and a wall of frost formed over the fleeing warriors.
โCowardsโฆโ she muttered as she looked upon her frozen troops. โTomorrow they will take the wall. I donโt care how many it takes I will not have everything I worked for taken from me.โ
As Kit sat down at the table with her hands crossed in front of her face she met the uneasy stare that her father was giving her. โSo before you begin I want to explain why firstโฆโ she said as she accepted a hot cup of tea. โI had a visionโฆโ
โA vision of your death?โ her father, Captain Hou interrupted bluntly. His displeasure mixed with concern evident on his face and in his voice.
โNo. If youโd let me continue, I had a vision of a golden dragon asking me to find out why there was a demon at the wall. It asked me to have faith and stay on the outside of the wall and watch the enemy as they went by with their attack. And I did.โ she stopped to blow on her tea before sipping it slowly.
โThey were studding the wall with these.โ she aid as she reached into a torn pocket and deposited what appeared to be a shard of obsidian like material that had been carved into a thin stud. โI wasnโt sure at first but I watched them firing arrows towards the wall and us. I almost gave up when suddenly an arrow hit one of the fragments and this cloud of shadow sped across the ground and attacked all who stood above where the arrow hit. The next wave of attackers did the same thing. Ran up, those that got to the wall embedded another shard and then they would launch a few volleys of arrows. Each time the Shadow demon, the Wrath Wraith, would appear.โ
She paused for a moment and let it sink in. โI though that if the creature just did as it was told and attacked where the shard was broken then we may be able to use it as a weapon. So I tried it out and it worked. The wrath wraith appeared and attacked the oni when they appeared over the ridge. They must have worked it out because I was retrieving one of the shards when they attacked. Lucky these adventurers appeared in time and saved me as during the commotion the shard I had scavenged broke in my pocket.โ she paused to sip from her tea.
โI grabbed a few more shards on the way here so we can analyse them but if the wrath wraith is dead then there is no ability to summon it again.โ she added. โBut I think I did what the dragon ancestor had asked as I could see the glow of the ancestors on these adventurers. I decided that my task was complete so I didnโt need to stay out there any more.โ
As if to punctuate the closure of her story the room dropped in temperature suddenly and a horrible scream broke through the night air outside. Racing up the steps the party looked over the edge of the wall to see walls of ice littering the battlefield. As they trace the direction the walls seemed to point in the Yuki-onna, Yukir Toshio and a huge Onikage stalked away from the battlefield.
The first flakes of snow began to drift down from the darkened clouds.
As the snow began to settle on the wall the movement of hundreds of feet broke the eerie silence. The drone of stampeding feet rose to a thunderous roar as spirit folk, oni, demons and undead rushed towards the wall.
As the humans manned the defences and shot arrows into the oncoming horde the oni and spirit folk that fell quickly rose again as undead. The tell-tale signs of the Yuki-onnaโs magic appearing as steam, frostbite and ice clinging to the freshly raised bodies.
As the bodies hit the wall the undead began to pile up the oni and spirit folk used their bodies to climb towards the top of the wall. But, the bodies concealed the real threat. Dark tendrils of Shadow crept along the ground under and around the feet of the humanoids. As they touched the wall they began to feel for cracks, gaps or holes in the wall in which they quickly filled the crack with their shadowy mass.
All across the wall the masses of bodies rose and fell as they were expertly cut down as the shadowy tendrils pierced the walls. The shadows weaved from the wall across the battlefield and back to the Yuki-onna.
With a surge of magic she gathered the shadow energy and merged her own power within it. Forcing the shadowy tendrils to freeze as if dark permafrost the ground erupted and cracked as the shadow expanded. As the ice rushed forward beams of light shot from the sky and the weapons and items of the heroes which banished the shadow, shattering the ice as it formed.
Where the shadow and ice wasnโt banished it cracked the wall and created walls of ice that protected the shadows minions while creating a ladder for them to climb up.
Appearance of a hero near the tendrils sent the ice and shadow into splinters to the ground and the invaders crashing down behind them. But more bodies brought more tendrils of shadow, their bodies leeching it across the ground where they ran, shuffled, fell and died.
The constant flow of shadow magic and the influx of dark ice came from the Yuki-onna who commanded the battlefield from a raised perch surrounded on all sides but one by jagged ice. One clear path to confront the source of dark magic and end the siege before it brought the wall down.
Captain Hou commands the wall troops to push back the attacking creatures but starts to struggle as the Yuki-onna’s attacks begin to bring down the wall.
Kyoko Harimasu
Kyoko fights with Captain Hou as she sends Takeo to the capital to warn them that the wall may fall and to provide the current status to her father.
Miss Hou
Captain Hou’s daughter reveals the reason she was hiding and scavenging amongst the battlefield. She joins Kyoko and her father in defending the wall and the Harimasu princess.
Wall Guard Gin Seng
Gin Seng simply defends the wall.
Environment and running the adventure
Tonight the encounter was balanced assuming that our party would have levelled up after reaching the wall and the fights along the way. This sets us at around 30000 xp for a daily encounter budget and around 6400 for an encounter.
The Shadow Tendrils move as fast as they can towards the wall and then take the dodge action until the Yuki-onnas turn. They always act on initiative 10 and wont attack creatures. They also always stealth up using the creatures above them as cover.
Our first lot of encounters is the wall โ Oni (hobgoblins), a captain and some lesser creatures (gnats or zombies.. something that is CR1/4) can flesh this part of the encounter out. If we treat them as coming in waves with the waves being 5 rounds apart it can make it feel like the tides are endless โ just need to describe the creatures taking some time making it across the fields.
The second encounter is when the party realise that the walls are being torn apart by the Yuki-onna and so they leave the wall to take the fight to her. Now if the party has ranged weapons, abilities or spells it makes this part of the fight easier so I would enforce that the spikes summoned (see last nights map Sieged under snow) provide 3/4 cover for the ice queen from range where there is spikes between her and the attacking party.
Apart from fighting through the waves of Oni, the captains and zombies or lesser Gnats once they reach the ice queen she is quite formidable. I would have the waves still come, our party is level 9 after all, but maybe have supportive arrow fire dwindle the horde a bit from the wall.
For the Onikage as this one is meant to be huge, a more impressive specimen, change the size to huge and HP to 60 and that will just about do it for us.
Thanks again for joining me for another end of week writeup. Next week I will work on some bonus content as we work our way up to the end of the month. Next month is the end of the road for us so don’t forget every day between now December 1st. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage, The Brazen Wolfe
Hi all and welcome to a bit of a random adventure night. Tonight I had fond memories (as I was sitting down watching kids movies) of watching some classics, and some new favourite movies. I wanted to create a sea adventure. So I bring you Maw of the sea god.
Now heavily inspired by Sinbad and a bit by the visuals of the “How to train your dragon” movies I wanted to have it focus around a put in the ocean.
The idea behind this is that the party have been given a quest to go find a missing heir who was sailing before a storm hit. The son’s faithful hawk was returned with a note with the last known heading of the ship attached to its leg in a small bottle.
It’s a sea adventure where coming up towards the hole they can see the plume of mist and sea spray for hundreds of feet, and some drifting barrels of something floating on top of the waves as if they were thrown overboard.
The hole is actually extinct volcano that has gradually been worn down by the sea leaving a gaping maw. However what lies beneath and that lives in the maw is from another age. Winged creatures that swoop and try and take the sailors and passengers of ships as they get close. Large tentacled creatures (not a kraken.. although it could be a kraken) lunge out from the deep water around the maw to attack the boats thinking them whales or some other food.
And there in the mist, a large mast with a tattered flag fluttering in the breeze can be seen through the spray.
The prince and a few of his men (most of the crew in fact) at on their ruined boat. Unable to turn in time to avoid the maw until it had them.
So apart from this idea I also wanted to do a bit more. So I did what any sane, sleep-deprived maniac would do and I created a map to go with the easy adventure.
Thanks for dropping by tonight to look at the Maw of the Sea god map and adventure plot. Don’t forget tomorrow our party face the Ice queen in the end of week write-up so make sure to come back for that. And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage, The Brazen Wolfe
Fight night is here and we find ourselves with enemies at the wall. Tonight we look at the multi-staged (potentially) encounter for the week which we highlighted on Wednesday. While the rain continues to fall in Australia and much of our Southern and eastern states prepare for flooding I wanted to take a moment to wish those bracing for another wet weekend the best of luck. If I had a lucky dice, or inspiration I would send it out to all of them so that they may use an extra dice when they need it most. Take care Australians.

As for the other parts of this encounter treat the shadow as something that can be spotted and targeted as a creature.
This creatures sole purpose is to find holes in the wall and act as a way of channelling ice magic from the Yuki-onna to damage, bring down the wall and act as a bridge and ladder for the warriors on the ground. Or those on the wall to go down to the ground.
Well that’s it for us tonight in Ryokughan. Don’t forget to come back this weekend for more content and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage, The Brazen Wolfe
Thursday has come and that means its another day where we look at MAPS! I have some big plans for this weekend, lets see if I can pull it off, but I hope that this first instalment of Sieged under snow is a good indication of what’s to come.
A nice short easy night tonight but the next few nights will amp it up a bit. Thanks for joining me tonight and don’t forget to come back in the next few nights. As we ramp up to the end of the month each day is crucial in building up our story for the players. So on that note let’s not lose sight of and forget the end goal, saving Ryokughan, Kyoko and the friends the party may have acquired along the way. And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage, The Brazen Wolfe
Twisted Wednesday has come and tonight it brings me foul tidings amongst them tides of Shadow. Tonight we look at how The Shadow isn’t quite done with the party yet.

So don’t forget to come back each day this week and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage, The Brazen Wolfe
Welcome to another Tuesday where we don’t look at adding new NPCs but look at fleshing out and adding more to an existing one. This week we look at Kit Hou and her answer to the call of the dragon which led her to choose between her mission and her father.
As Kit sat down at the table with her hands crossed in front of her face she met the uneasy stare that her father was giving her. “So before you begin I want to explain why first…” she said as she accepted a hot cup of tea. “I had a vision…”

Well another night has come and gone and we are now half-way through the weekly content. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for the plot twist and secondary hook night and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage, The Brazen Wolfe
