The seekers of the lost god. P1

Xer’lyss looked over their host as they sped forward across the ashen ground, rotting wood and shattered stone. Chariots, steeds of slaanesh carrying daemonettes and mortals alike, heralds and mortals who ran in foot wanting to curry favour with the warhost as they sped ever closer to their forgotten prince.

Breathing in deeply they detected the waft of the sleeping prince and eyes flickering with ecstacy as they detected the faintest trail of whome they sought. But there was a darker, danker smell on the breeze. One of death, of bones and of rot.

Sending one of their fastest riders off they began to prepare for the hunt, mustering the host for battle and driving them ever forwards towards their god. A few hours later their rider returned carrying a shield of solid bone, expertly crafted from shoulder blades, skulls and the like to be a work of art. Violence and even the harvesting of bones from the living in excess was still a calling to Slaanesh. A wicked smile spread across Xer’lyss’s face as a shiver of anticipation wracked her body.

Letting out a trill that resonated through the host. All steeds, mortals and daemons stopped and watched as her alabaster steeds tore off, her returning rider leading the way to the bone reapers and their tithe of excess.

Yup it’s finally Warhammer night!

As I prepare for a battle against my opponent, a friend I am teaching AOS 3 to, I wanted to make my army as thematic as possible. For me Slaanesh is fast, lithe and deadly and for me that’s chariots, mounted troops and super fast daemons. It may not be the most competitive army but to help my friend learn the hobby and new edition (not so new for many of us) I believe it will do just fine.

The Family home

Welcome to Friday and that normally means Fight Night! here at Brazen Wolfe Tabletop. Tonight I have something that I hope will spice up the encounter with the Gaki just that little bit more to make it feel like a true end of adventure encounter, it is also something I haven’t used before in a campaign of adventure but I believe it will become part of my homebrew toolbox moving forwards.

Last we saw Kyoko, Takeo and Hurane being knocked unconscious and thrown down below deck on the Ren families ship – not an ideal situation to be in with a angry and desperate Gaki spirit. Tonight we will investigate that final confrontation between the party, with their blessed silvered weapons as they go to investigate a mysterious note left on Captain Kyoko’s desk stating that the Gaki spirit must be at the Ren families boat. So without any more of a re-cap lets get on with the content for tonight’s encounter setup, also known as fightnight!

The possessed ship

203FrPoSh

In addition to the normal stat-block that the Gaki has he will be accompanied by the unconcious, yet possessed bodies of his daughter and grand daughter, Hana and Saki. As they approach the party in a shuffling, disjointed manner the party can see a dark mist flickering about them as tears streak down their face and a look of anguish and confusion as one of them, Hana – the grand daughter, breaks the possession for a moment to scream for the party to run, to escape as her grandfather had full control of the ship now and it wasn’t safe. After the warning she would go limp, falling to the floor before slowly standing back up with a the same anguish filled face as her mother as they both stumble towards them.

Both Hana and Saki follow the commoner template below.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Gaki spirit (Grandfather Ren) takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Gaki canโ€™t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Waves of water that are within 5ft of the edge of the ship crash onto the deck before draining outwards under the railing. Any creature on the deck within 5 feet of the railing (edge of the boat) must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be pulled up to 20 feet into the water overboard and knockedย prone.
  • A knife, hook, oar, shard of glass, bottle or other object on the ship flies towards each member of the party. Any creature on the deck of the ship must make on a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw, taking 5ย (2d4)ย piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • A wave of dark mist suddenly blows across the deck of the ship centred on the cabin and extending for 30ft on deck before dissipating. Any creature caught in the wave of mist must make a DC12 Constitution saving throw or become poisoned until the start of the creatures next turn as they retch and become overwhelmed with nausea and hunger. A creature that succeeds on their saving throw has advantage on the next constitution saving throw for the same dark mist next time and a subsequent success will grant them immunity to the third time they are affected.

The Gaki will be in the Cabin at the stern of the ship, for reference perhaps check out the ship map in my Ship Life post from November. Hana and Saki are meant really as a morale dilemma for the party. Knocking them out is what is preferred – hence why I have Hana waking up to warn the party to show that 1, they are possessed and 2, they can wake up from it. Their purpose isn’t to damage or attack the party but to try and grapple (likely unsuccessfully) and disarm the silver weapons where possible. Once unconscious, or you know, dead, the party will find Grandfather Ren – Gaki spirit in the cabin wearing his Hiro body and likely holding something valuable that maybe the perceptive party member may recognise from Takeo or Kyoko. Maybe a Short blade with an elegant long handle (wakatashi) that they have seen Kyoko wearing before in almost a ceremonial manner.

This is to trigger the party into knowing that Kyoko may have been here or is somewhere near by. The Gaki would likely be enraged and continue to use lair actions whilst dashing in to attack the party members who fall, slip or otherwise are hindered by the Gaki’s possessed ship lair actions. He would be aware of any remaining silvered weapons and avoid these characters at all cost unless there was no option. Once reduced to 0 HP by a silvered weapon the dark mist would shriek outwards from Hiro and fly into a urn that was the only non desecrated item in this room upon a mantle with a kind, smiling gentleman sitting above it in a painting. When Hiro wakes up (as he will be wounded by not dead – his grandfather wouldn’t let him die now would he) he would rush past the party wanting to check on his family and Kyoko, Takeo and Hurane.

That would conclude tonight’s adventure and the encounter with the Gaki spirit. What do you all think about lair actions? They are meant to be something that really threatens the party, that puts the party in a dangerous situation and can really put the adventure in the favour of the creature that is heavily out numbered. I hope to use these a lot this year as I have some bigger plans in the work for 2022 and am excited to bring them to you all for your enjoyment and hopefully your use in your own campaigns.

Don’t forget to come back this weekend for some, dare I hope for it, Warhammer content as well as the summary and conclusion of this part of the Red Fleet campaign! And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage!

Dark promises, fulfilled oaths

Welcome to Thursday, the day set aside for those extra bits that can make your adventure just that little bit more. Today is hopefully no exception with a bit of a insight to the current situation in the city of Daye and within the Ren family.

The idea of tonight is to create a story point within the linear quest line for this adventure sequence. The reason behind it is to give the DM some insight into what’s going on in the adventure behind what has been written – you cant expect the Ren family to wait in a room for the party to come knocking, they have their own agenda which may cause the party to encounter them sooner than the adventure plans for and hopefully tonight’s post will give a bit more of a background, if but a taste, into what this family is all about.

Grandfathers gift

203ThGrGi

Hiro Ren smiled behind his white mask and bowed deeply to the man who purchased the horse pendant that would see the mans endurance increase, or so the talisman was meant to provide that blessing to him. Placing the gold pieces in a pouch tided within his robes he looked across his sister and mother who were also selling similar talismans to other people of Daye, “good”, he thought, “we are doing well. Grandfathers suggestion to sell talismans to ward of evil spirits is paying off well. We should be able to make enough gold after a couple weeks with days like today and leave back for home. As long as there aren’t any more setbacks.” He smiled to himself behind his mask as he greeted the next person to come to his little stall and enquire about the warding talismans. Producing a small silver dragon pendant, a dragon from his home country which had a long serpentine body unlike the dragons of this continent who were lesser winged lizards the dragons back home were like deities who flew above man.

Several hours passed and the Ren family packed up their stall. Hiro sat down as his exhaustion came over him and took a few large gulps of the briny air that surrounded the place they set up their stalls. “Brother you must look after yourself better. Are you still unable to sleep well? Is Grandfather keeping you awake with his requests?” His sister, Hana, asked concerned as she wrapped up the last few items in the silk sheets that they stored them within large heavy chests.

“He is just restless at night, ever since we made the ship more suitable for him he has become less agitated and disturbs me less. But I can go these last few weeks until we have achieved grandfathers and our goal with limited sleep. It will be worth it when our family can return and save our family home from the yakuza.” Hiro smiled sadly, his father having to stay home in order to keep the family business back home occupied and working so the yakuza didn’t move in and take possession of everything they had worked so hard for many years to achieve.

“Hiro, I picked this up from the Kuronami family. It should help you sleep better and get more rest. It’s some form of potion that you pour on a thin cloth and drape over your face as you go to sleep. I have been warned that it can be quite potent so we won’t use too much at once, just enough to help you get rest.” his mother, Saki, said as she handed him the small opaque bottle with a large cork stopper.

Smiling he took the bottle and stood, grabbing the chest that held their wares as his mother and sister walked in front of him, sharing favourite moments from the days sales and being otherwise in a good mood.

As they neared their ship they could see a disturbance on deck, objects were flying around and three figures were retreating off the ship and back onto the dock. Frowning he could make out who they were and he could feel grandfather stirring, a fear, unbridled and raw sprang from deep within him. Placing the chest down he ushered his mother to mind the goods as he and his sister crept forward.

โ€œIt looks like my teacher was correct. The family would have had to let the Gaki spirit take possession willingly. This whole ship seems to have been desecrated in order to allow the spirt free reignโ€ the smallest of the figures said, as he nimbly moved across the deck towards the other two, Hurane and Kyoko, he could see Kyoko’s face and would recognise Hurane any where.

Sneaking closer to be at the end of the plank that connected his families ship to the dock he remembered the potion his mother had given him. Quickly uncorking it he risked letting his long dexterous tail coming out to quickly grab some rags he kept in a hip pouch for wrapping sold items at the stall. Coating two of the rags with the potent smelling liquid he gestured for his sister to do the same. An understanding, and fear, crossed her face but a sudden disturbance on deck pushed her fear away, grandfather was impatient and needed these people taken care of.

As they descended the gangplank they discussed his family and his keen hearing heard the word ‘gaki’. He was no fool and the gaki was a hunger spirit from his home continent, they could not be talking about his grandfather, he was a kind and generous ancestral spirit that had come to his family in their moment of need and only asked to be able to walk amongst them during the day to grand them fortune and luck when doing business. Bracing himself for what he was about to do he rushed forward, his sister behind him. Grappling Kyoko and forcing the towel over her face she struggled for a moment before going limp. His tail quickly wrapped around the throat of Hurane and held the last of the soaked Rags to his face too and after a moment all three people; the captain, vice captain and the small nimble one of the Red Fleet, were unconscious in their arms. A calm and soothing voice spoke to him “Take them below deck, I also believe that the mirrors left in the ship will bring a bad omen to us. Destroy them, discard the remains face down on the dock for now. Quickly go my son” his grandfather urged him into action. Moving quickly and using his Vanarian strength and dexterous limbs he quickly did as his grandfather had suggested, it was through his wisdom that they had come this close to their goal.

Well that will do us for tonight, not as small as a writeup as I had intended but I hope that it provides that extra insight into the Ren family, their goals current situation and what the party will need to deal with this week.

Don’t forget, like the Gaki spirit I am hungry to hear your thoughts, feedback and any report on playing through these adventures I think of. Maybe not as hungry as a gaki as the Japanese lore on them is quite, disturbing. But regardless do let me know!

And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Waning moon heralds the dark

Welcome to Wednesday where we look at twists, turns and changes in direction of the adventure. This week there isn’t a huge amount that we would want to shift as we are wrapping up the adventure with the Red Fleet setting anchor in Daye.

So to still make use of the adventure I think I will touch on something that I would be adding on Friday. So sit back, have a cup of tea (or coffee – my preferred liquid) and enjoy.

Dark wind

203WeDaWi

As Kyoko stepped onto the deck of the ship belonging to the Ren family she noticed the harshly burnt and damaged wood above the doors and windows. As she walked towards the door a fishing harpoon sprung from where it lay and barely missed her as a throwing blade deflected it off course. Looking backwards at the masked and robed form of Takeo and the armoured form of her friend Hurane she nodded thanks to both for having her back.

“It looks like my teacher was correct. The family would have had to let the Gaki spirit take possession willingly. This whole ship seems to have been desecrated in order to allow the spirt free reign” Takeo said as he smacked a lantern that flew towards his had to the ground.

“There is no sign of the family here. They must be elsewhere, likely continuing to do as they please to sate their desire and the Gaki’s hunger.” Hurane said, sticking his head through the door only to duck out quickly as the sound of knives on a wooden door thudded from where he was standing.

Cursing Kyoko lead Takeo and Hurane off the boat and watched as the moving objects stopped. “We will need to prepare the adventures before they come back” she said as she turned to head back to her boat only to be met by a pair of glowing eyes as several people grabbed them and a sharp smelling rag was forced across their faces.

So the disappearance of key NPCs when they are needed and maybe a note left on a table with poorly chosen words such as “Ren family” could see the adventures walking into a trap consisting of a family fully enthralled by the Gaki spirit and its energy having accumulated so much in a short period of time that its affecting the objects in the ship that it calls its home, for now, which can then a medium level encounter into something much more challenging.

Well that’s it for tonight, short sharp and too the point for our secondary plot hook and twist. The safe return of the Captain and her compatriots as well as the purification of the gaki spirit being in the cards this week.

Don’t forget to let me know if you have any feedback on the format or the adventure itself as I really do want to hear from my awesome readers their thoughts!

And lastly, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The priest of the Red Fleet

Welcome to NPC Tuesday where I hope we can meet a new NPC that I wasn’t exactly sure how I wanted to approach when I can up with the concept for this adventure, and you will see why soon.

Today we meet Lee Ping, the Red fleets resident priest and wise man who works with Kyoko to make sure the people of the Red fleet are successful and safe. He is older than what he appears and more than what he lets be revealed but he is a genuine soul who cares immensely for life and the spirits that guide and help us. So let’s look into his little cabin and introduce him properly with, what I can do for now, a placeholder image (created in the ever-useful heroforge!)

Lee Ping

203TuLePi

Lee moved through the murky, dim lit room as if he had lived here all his life. His quick and nimble limbs allowed him to effortlessly swing from beam to beam on the low ceiling to avoid some of the piles of books, papers, scrolls and ingredients for his alchemy as if he was walking on the ground. Stepping down in front of a large cauldron he began to sprinkle in powdered silver, wormwood, wolfs bane and several mushrooms as he began to rhythmically chant which causes a blue flame to bubble into life under the cauldron.

“Oh I must not forget the Maelroot leaf.” He said to himself as he whirled around to go to a pile of boxes that contained the foul smelling herb. As he turned though his long furred tail knocking off a vial of liquid from the bench. His quick reflexes kicked in and his right foot shot out and grabbed onto the bottle. The tail he had considered removing many times, ever since he lost the use of it in his youth from a disease that only now he fully understood – but it was too late for it. His feet though were a completely different story, the opposable big toe able to grip onto items, walls, rope or in this case, bottles as if they were a second set of hands. Grinning he passed the bottle to his right hand and placed it back on the bench before heading towards the box labelled Maelroot.

A knock at the door and a burst of light from the outside broke him out of his merry tune and he practically jumped onto the roof – his hands and feet gripping onto the worn wood held him close to the recesses in the ceiling.

A voice, several voices called out for him, the smell of fish, soot and a sour scent that only came from the people of Daye meant that he was caught out without his mask. As the people moved into the room he quietly crept along the ceiling to where heft his mask and red robe, the items that his people must wear at all times until it was deemed safe to reveal their true form. His simian features evident in the morning light he tried to keep to the shadows, his large nose proved useful in detecting small traces of what kind of people had visited his tent; adventurers, warriors and the sort of people that would only seek him out if they had been told to do so, or they thought his skills could be useful which meant either Hurane or Kyoko had sent them his way. Dropping to the floor quietly using his hands and feet to buffer this drop he quickly placed his head on and pulled his robe over the rest of his body to hide the abundant fur that grew thickly in patches on his arms, torso and face.

Standing straight he walked across the floor behind the party just as they reached his cauldron that was bubbling with the reagents within. Noticing the silvery bubbles and slightly green smoke coming from the pot he hobbled forward and grabbed the leaf that was missing. “Excuse me you lot, I must get this leaf in there so it doesn’t explode and cover you all with a green soot that taints your skin” he said as he pushed through the party – shorter than the people on average but about the same height of the dwarf and built like an elf, his kind were a folk of varied size depending on what part of the content they came from.

Now the monkey-folk, ape-folk and the like are a homebrew race that many people have done already but I must admit I enjoy creating new things rather than using someone else’s pre-existing template. Lee Ping and many of the masked traders, sailors and merchants are all from this beast-folk that have traits and aspects of monkeys. A long dexterous tail that has saved many of their kind from falling (and functions like a belt when needed!), strong feet with opposable toes that function like hands and keen senses that has come through form their bestial features which has kept them safe from the horrors that wander their homeland.

I picture these people as nimble and wise, not the most common of folk but found in most towns in small family units that pride themselves on their generosity and keen mind for trade and business. Not being shy from combat if required they tend to be more calculating than aggressive and know when to strike to best affect where the safety of themselves and those around them comes first.

Lee Ping in this case (yeah it’s not the best of the names I have given an NPC, but not the worst!) is a shaman or wise man – aging a bit slower than normal humans he has spent a long time understanding the world through the eyes of an alchemist so that he can better protect and aid people who are found deserving. Lee in this adventure will be able to use the freshly concocted brew to bless the weapons, for some time, so that they can prevent them from the creatures that are found on his homeland and now stalking the streets of Daye. Yeah, creatures.. But more on that later.

Tonight’s writeup was bit longer than last night but it flowed a bit more, I think that because the last few days, weeks…, that I have been writing the Red Fleet adventures I have been working up to this moment where I introduce some of the aspects that truly hooked me as an.. eleven year old boy staying in a hotel in Melbourne one Christmas. Back then the race was called the Vanara (or maybe the Hengeyokai monkey-hybrid) and for me that book was a font of inspiration but sadly, despite owning the book and adoring it I never actually got to play a campaign with it… But by creating one here on Brazen Wolfe Tabletop maybe other people can fulfil that long regret I have by playing through the adventure I create and letting me know how it goes. Let’s see if anyone manages to play this campaign setting that I am creating at the moment.

As with last nights post, let me know if you like this format, a bit of a story, a bit of a technical breakdown (where applicable) and the few smaller parts of an adventure that should take people through a few hours of play time, depending on the group of course, that work to build up to an adventure a month – or so. This is I believe the sustainable pace for me and what I have seen similar content creators doing so it should relieve a bit of time pressures on my end as work picks up as the year continues.

Don’t forget to let me know if you play through any of this content and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage!

Legacy of greed

Welcome everyone to Monday’s post on plots, drivers and adventure hooks. This week we will continue on with the 3rd part of the Red fleet Adventure where we look at the conclusion of the magic draining creature, the Gaki spirit.

This will be a relatively short part of the adventure focusing on the combat, (if the party didn’t manage to kill it already) and the aftermath. So let’s roll into it.

Keeping family traditions

203MoKFT

After sitting in silence for what felt like an hour Kyoko slowly opened the door and looked out at the deck of the ship. The red sails and rich wood were starting to show their colours as sunrise came in full bloom.

Turning to the adventures who had found themselves at the centre of the creature in Daye she sighed and sat down. “The seals that we place upon our doors and windows on our ships are meant to prevent river and sea spirits from entering and playing with our maps and instruments. I didn’t expect to face other creatures, well, spirits from our homeland over here but I am glad for the seals now.” She said as she opened a bottle of a pale, strong smelling wine.

“Hurane, check the merchants and look for those who have no seals on their boats. We will find the family during the day so we can prepare the family for the removal of this possession and send their ancestor back to the heavens to live in peace. We still dont know what type of spirit it is, my coin is on a Gaki but it may be a Baku or another yokai. The wards we have are mainly created with powdered silver, check with Takeo to see if his teachers have sent word.” She spoke after a minute of drinking the rice wine.

She then turned to the party. “If its offended by our wards we have a priest here who can bless your weapons with the same material. It will help you purify the yokai’s, a bad spirit,” she clarified, “essence so it can pass on. Please go seek out Lee Ping. He will know of which you ask for. I fear that tonight it will come again and angrier, especially if we remove the possession from its tether. Be prepared as they are known to be vengeful.”

The idea this week is to get the party to work with Hurane to talk to the families, of which there is one, and to meet Lee, a surprise for tomorrow and Thursday. This will give the party a goal and the means to defend themselves but the encounter wont be easy as with the previous night and the night before I would expect the party to not have had a full long rest yet.

Well that’s it for tonight, the beginning of the end for this multi-part adventure. If you like this approach more than a whole, different new adventure each week please let me know! I am still experimenting with how I want this blog to work and want to hear some thoughts!

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow and every day this week for more content and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Flight through the streets

Happy Sunday all, thanks for stopping by to have a look at our weekend write-up which has been worked towards all week.

This week we looked at what the reason is the creature is seeking out certain items and we met it, well, the party will have. So let’s look at how to play out this adventure!

Hungry Mists

202HuMi

_part:2 hunger pact_

The party find themselves being escorted back to their accommodations by Takeo. He wears his mask constantly when around people and answers questions directed at himself in a way that he gives information but never fully answers the question. Insight check (DC14) would reveal he is hiding things but not lying in what he is saying.

The other mission he has is to plant a lesser charm of tracking on the party. Passive perception 15 will notice the attempt and if he is called out on it he said he thought the party dropped the good luck charm and was giving it back.

That night the party are visited by the creature once they are asleep. If in separate rooms elves, those with passive perception of 14 or higher will awake to something in the room but it wont reveal itself unless that party member has something magical on them (items). If they do wake up due to the passive perception a dc12 charisma saving throw is required. If they pass they notice the creature, on a fail they don’t notice the creature but have an uneasy feeling of being followed or watched.

When it finds a magical item it will begin to feed, this process wakes up the party members in the room and they see a creature inhaling blue, green or red dust motes from something it holds in its hands.ย  Once the party wake up the creature will turn into its mist form and disappear through the ceiling or wall.

This happens twice more that night and on the third attempt the creature will lash out (attack roll) at the nearest player.

DM decision. Let the party go another night where they are visited again and if they interrupt the feeding again it will attack again. This depends on what the party want to do the following day and what other plans you have. When the party realise the creature is targetting magical items then have that day or the next day be the birthday ceremony and gift awarding for the priestess of Chauntea.

At this point Kyoko, Takeo and Hurane know of the creature and will answer questions from the party, but not what drives it. They dont know what it is exactlyย  only that it is a spirit from their home continent and it will feed on magical items to sustain its driving hunger.

After the priestess ceremony where she is awarded a magical necklace Kyoko will ask the party to try and persuade the party to join Kyoko for dinner, so she can watch over her as she believes the creature knows of the amulet and since it’s been denied meals the last few nights it will be aggressive.

The party can approach the priestess how they will but she wont leave until after she has conducted the dusk ceremonies. As they leave the temple with night falling the creature tries to attack the priestess but it keeps shying away at the last moment. Hurane or Takeo arrive and lead the Party to Kyoko’s ship where upon the creature won’t enter the main cabin.

IF the party fight and kill the creature (with anything other than silver) then a dark mist like cloak falls to the ground and a badly hurt Red Fleet merchant from the Ren family falls to the ground.

If killed by a silver weapon then the mist gets absorbed into the silver of the weapon and its gone.

Well that’s it for tonight, part 2 in our 3 part adventure for this month.

Upward comparison

Welcome to a Brazen Wolfe Tabletop random thought post tonight.

It’s not news to me that I procrastinate on my hobby, I recognise this and can tell when I do so. One of the many factors, which is most apparent to me tonight is upwards comparing myself to others in my hobby circle, particularly warhammer where a few members in my group have won local painting competitions, been features in the Games Workshop article’s for their painting as well as winning actual tournaments in Australia.

Now I consider myself a decent tactician and general. I generally have a positive win rate and make my opponents really fight to take the win from me but when it comes to painting I find myself incomparable with my gaming peers.

To be completely overt, I started painting miniatures in 2017 (poorly, base colours only, no layers or shades or highlights..) and have worked up to paint some miniatures I am actually Proud and happy to call my own work, but looking at the sea of unpainted miniatures, knowing what I want them to look like and also seeing what my friends can accomplish with the same size model, same tools and same amount of time I get dissuaded very quickly even if I can stand on equal (well equal enough) grounds with them on the battlefield.

Well this year I want that to change, I hope to kick-start my painting journey with the help of some absolutely fantastic painters this year where I hope they will be able to teach an old Wolfe new tricks. For me being able to look at a piece of art work, because thats the level of painting I consider my friends at, and be inspired instead of being dissuaded will be my biggest hurdle this year.. that and 200 skaven rats (or a certain lord of gluttony from Slaanesh I want to paint and paint well this year).

So my goal is to ramp up my painting and when I finish a model use the weekend posts to upload what I have accomplished, with the help and guidance of some very talented hobbyists locally.

This is currently what I could consider the best model(s) I have painted to have as a benchmark. Each I probably sunk half a day on to get to this state.

Stay tuned for updates in the future.

Gaki – Hunger Spirit

Hi all and welcome to Fight-night (also known as Friday). Tonight I wanted to reveal the stat-block for the dark mist creature, touch on the tactics to employ with it (as there is no map as it could be encountered in any inn room, bed room, street or tavern floor etc.) as well as introduce Lizbet, the priestess of Chauntea.

So to roll like a weighted dice, let’s get on with the write-up.

Gaki – Hunger Spirit

202FrHuSp

The Gaki is the spirit of someone who left this world without achieving a great desire and being so driven to achieve this goal they hungered for it even in death. Normally these creatures die without having much to their name, no means to survive or achieve their goal so when they find themselves returned as one of the undead they immediately try and rectify this by, generally, approaching one of their family members and asking them to help the spirit complete it’s dying wish. In doing so they take possession of the body at night as they are fearful of what they will see in themselves come the morning light of the sun.

During the day the possessed creature has no signs that they carry something within them unless the creatures hunger or lust for their desired object is so great that the creature risks exposing themselves to sunlight to get at what they seek. At night however the almost malevolent hunger that fuels these creatures takes form of a great inky black mist that surrounds their host and turns their body of flesh and bones into something incorporeal, mostly. Its arms, hands and mouth are always physical (yet able to turn to mist to achieve its goals) and this gives the creature a nightmarish appearance at night.

The Gaki are so terrified of their own appearance that they avoid Silver, being mirrors, at all costs and unless driven nearly insane by their hunger they will flee at the mere sigh of silver whether it’s coins, weapons, jewellery, dining and cooking utensils or armour.

Although their hungers all differ they all have an affinity for destroying magical items as a way of fuelling themselves and their incorporeal form.

The Gaki, in this adventures instance, is also bound by wards made from liquified silver as the ‘magical wards’ appear as molten silver metal that reflects the very nature of their soul. Not even their hunger will let them pass wards made with this special liquid created by the Red Fleets alchemists and priests. The Gaki this adventure hungers for wealth and promised its family (who it resides within) that it would grant them wealth and success in business if they allow it to help them. However once surrounded by minor magical trinkets, and some not-so-minor, it became overwhelmed by its hunger for wealth and desire to obtain more and was driven into a feeding frenzy to sustain the amount of energy it was using in its pursuit of wealth.

Priestess Elizabeth ‘Lizbet’

The youngest priestess to be granted favour from Chauntea in the town of Daye for quite a number of decades she is seen to be a child of prophecy and as such is granted praise and status not readily given. This year her order and the town came together to celebrate her coming with age and organised a special gift from the visiting merchants known as the Red Fleet to celebrate her blessings and her age.

Despite the praise and gifts granted to her she is level headed, humble and only seeks to aid and teach Chaunteas blessings to those who are seeking it. She is warm, friendly and an excellent judge of character and as such is known to see the true intentions of those who would seek to mislead and trick her. This is aided by some of the magical trinkets that she keeps on her person that seek to keep her from harm and rumours of her power as a priestess has spread to neighbouring villages and towns.

Well that’s it for today. Some of the images for NPCs have started to look more and more similar as I tend to have a “Type” when creating a NPC. But non-the-less I hope you enjoyed to days content and hope I will see you in the following days reading the weekend writeups.
