Enthralled by the Past

Tonight and I have created another zine for this weeks adventure, Enthralled by the Past. This adventure can be used system agnostic as we explore other RPGs out there other than D&D. So please adjust to what ever creatures you are using in your adventure! However as always Kobold fight club can be used to quickly balance an encounter for Dungeons and Dragons and Tetra-cube currently provides the stat-blocks for creatures in this adventure.

So I hope you enjoy this weeks adventure, Enthralled by the Past. If you like this format please let me know and I hope you enjoy.

The City of Finchford was a midway point to just about nowhere, and everywhere. Settled on the beginning of a large plain the flat land surrounding the city’s immediate location provided ample room for farming and expansion. However the true wealth of this city lay in the hills beyond the farms, fences and walls.

Gold, silver and even a rich platinum deposit had enticed dwarves to move here years ago. Those dwarves then sold their ore and weapons to the people of the village of Finchford. Soon  a city was born from the prosperity between the two races and there was a time of development and peace. However, it was short lived.

Soon the need arose for a standing guard, an army, to be near Finchford. The local nobility had the grandiose idea to create a kingdom here and so the land became engulfed in war. This war gave birth to an order of knights the land had not seen. The Parn Dragoons were born from this conflict and for many years their power was undisputed.

Finchford

Finchford – Created in nightcafe.

The party gaze at the city of Finchford as they continue their ride towards its large gates. Farmland stretches for miles around the city and the sheer size of it dwarfs many that the party have seen in the past. As they descend the last of the hills and head towards Finchford’s heart the land evens out. However, to the east of the city a few mountains rise and at this distance a large ruin can be seen looking over the surrounding land.

This towering ruin sits like an ancient guardian looking down upon the folk of Finchford, silent and still except for birds flying near the peak of a tower.

2023 Campaign Adventure 2

Good evening all and welcome to the night of my second adventure and the brief summary I want to provide for it. Whilst not giving away the campaign, adventure or mystery I will attempt to write up each adventure this year starting with my 2023 campaign adventure 2.

2023 Campaign Adventure 2

Sa320CaE2

Plot:

Mordekai (Kai) and Tater have survived another night as wagon guards. After witnessing the horrible worm like creatures the night before they are cautious today. Checking over Groku, a fellow female caravan guard, and her wounds they are satisfied that she isn’t infected. The presence of the worm like creatures and the unmatched aggression from those infected they are concerned of further madness spreading.

The day is long and positioned at the back of the caravan, where the highest chance of ambush lies, they make good progress towards Warrendeep. Guarding a Farmer called Tilly who is transporting the last of her animals to their new home and the repaired wagon that they had found last week they were busy to say the least.

However there is trouble brewing. As they get within a few hours ride to their destination a storm grows and the decision is made to seek shelter in a closer village that didn’t involve travelling through a ravine during a storm. Moving off road the wagons begun to get stuck and bogged in the muddy ground. They were nearing the village of Suncrest when the empty wagon they were escorting (tied along side Tilly’s wagon filled with farm small animals) slipped into a divot.

Timely Discovery

As Kai and Tater heaved the wagon out they uncovered a relatively well kept looking blade, made by a kobold. Kai went to report the findings and his suspicions to Sam while Tater stayed with the wagons. While Kai convinced the wagon master to avoid the town Tater noticed a rock moving along the top of a ledge. However when he called out in alarm the rock moved away, dislodging some smaller stones to land near his feet.

Explaining this to the other guards and Kai was an amusing affair and Tater’s sobriety was questioned but the wagon guards became on high alarm. A young guard, Jason, rode backwards and forth scouting the area and delivering news while they waiting for the scouts to return from Suncrest. When they returned they had found the village they were approaching was long deserted, but a smaller sheltered area was nearby that could be a viable alternative. With some deliberation the party agreed to camp in the wild, sheltered by small rocky outcrops. This was to be a mistake they would regret.

Suncrest Ambush site – Created in Inkarnate

Ambush!

Trouble Brewing –

Organising a clever system where guards are holding torches and standing watch on the elevated rocks (Some as high as 14 feet from the place where the wagons rest) the party set up to rest. The wagons in a defensive position gave the party, the travellers and the wagon animals the most protection. However Kai and Tater rested they were jolted awake to the sounds of screaming as one of the guards was dragged off into the night. All three sentry torchers were missing (dropped when ambushed of fleeing back to the wagons).

Tater dashed to investigate to reveal a reptile with a stonelike thick scaly hide. It had a hold of Jason, the young messenger guard and was trying to drag him off to be eaten as leisure. With a mighty blow Tater deal some damage to it, however it wasn’t enough. Moments later a giant lizard appeared from the gloom and rushed at tater which he side stepped. Several guards rushed to help Tater but some stayed in a circle, including Groku to follow the parties plan. However they were soon ambushed by more of these giant stealthy lizards, revealed to be the same one that Tater had seen earlier in the day.

After a vicious combat four guards had died, devoured by the large lizards. However, the party manged to kill all but one and save three of the seven guards they defended the caravan with. They noted that many of the lizards had broken shackles or harnesses still attached to them indicating they may have once been domesticated. Or enslaved.

Closure

Having dealt with the lizards they retrieved Jason’s wedding band to give to his wife and discovered driftglobe inside the stomach of the Stonehide Gobbler. After an unrestful night, eating some roasted lizard meat and drinking ale they packed up camp. Taking some more of the lizard meat with them for fresh food on the journey they continued on – the towers of Warrendeep appearing in the distance by the end of the day.

Main NPC:

Sam Gustave – created in artbreeder

Sam having seen Kai and Tater fight and defend the caravan trusts them a bit more now. After Kai approaches him to discuss the suspicions of the local populace he entrusted the nights defence to Kai and Tater. This will cost a few lives but save many more in the endeavours of these two.

Creatures for combat:

For this 2023 campaign adventure 2 combat having creatures that aren’t dumb, but not super cunning made sense. Knowing when to flee to save their life but driven to attack by hunger these ambush predators and their larger comrades attack in packs. Although not brutal in combat these were enough for the party and with a many bad rolls it was an entertaining combat non-the-less.

Four Stonehide Gobblers and 2 Giant Lizards were enough for the party of two level two characters.

Thanks for joining me tonight and for continuing on this campaign with me. I had planned a different adventure this week but the party saw through my cunning plan. However I have many more in store for them and next adventure day they enter Warrendeep. So do join me as we continue this adventure fortnightly!

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow as we wrap up last weeks adventure. And, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Uncovering the Secrets of the Keep

Fright night brings the attention of the party to the group uncovering the secrets of the keep. Instead of a typical front-on combat this one is filled with magic. So it will be prone to being unbalanced which can make it harder for us. The task we have is staging the combat. We need it to feel like one fluid encounter but having it go through phases or stages. This will help balance it out without making it too difficult, I hope. So join me at this brief glimpse at the encounter this week tonight. Sit back, grab a coffee and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

Uncovering the Secrets of the Keep

320FrTGnOYe

This week we have a few mages investigating the ruins and causing all types of issues. The motif will be revealed this weekend however the combat prowess can be revealed tonight!

The idea behind the spells taken from the wizards is a good mixture of damage and Area control. The spells could be used in their efforts to explore as well as hinder the party. This is how I would design a wizard I would play so it only makes sense that mercenaries would do the same.

While Uncovering the secrets of the keep the wizards would use catapult, mage hand and levitate to move debris around. Rhyan would use her spells to influence people and to battle anything particularly dangerous.

Fireball wont be used that frequently, the reason is that it could damage the valuable items and things they are looking for. But they are there if the going gets rough.

Of course they wouldn’t be much without body guards so having a few low CR humanoids to do the heavy lifting would be in order. However being a powerful mage it already will be difficult to balance this encounter as all wizards or sorcerer’s can decimate a party if luck is on their side.

Thanks for dropping by tonight. This weekend we will delve deeper in uncovering the secrets of the keep but until then we can only wait. This weekend is another adventure filled one for me and as we roll closer to the tournament season for me warhammer will take over. But the blog will always continue! So don’t forget to use this weekend for more glorious hobby and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Approaching Thrall Keep

The shadow of the Thrall Keep covering Finchford City, the dangers of the woods and then the hike up to the ruins is what lies in wait when the party being approaching thrall keep. This Thursday night brings a few inspirational points to help guide the encounter and adventure. Instead of maps that can restrict imagination let it flow this week. So sit back, grab a coffee and enjoy the inspiration flow below!

Approaching Thrall Keep

320ThApThKe

Approaching Thrall Keep

The decision to approach the keep is one that the party will need to make. To trigger this though the party would need a reason to begin.

“A rumbling came through the floor. At first the party thought it was the dragging of a stool for a bar fight but even the combatants ceased their hostility and waited. Listening. Moving outside Marie was close in front of the party when the great beating of wings could be heard and the silhouette of a large dragon appeared in front of the moonlit clouds. A dragon, as Marie has claimed, had appeared to take up residence in the ruins. However the party felt something was odd in the way it moved, the movements felt disjointed as if the creature wasnโ€™t well. It flew with too infrequent wing beats to keep its large frame aloft.

Yes, something wasnโ€™t right.

Marie bit her thumb and frowned โ€œThatโ€™s no dragon,โ€ she muttered under her breath as the other inhabitants of Finchford appeared in the street and began to flee in panic. โ€œSomethingโ€™s not right here..โ€ she said as she turned to the party

The Forest

Now the approach to the keep lies under a heavily wooded path that leads up towards the keep. I find this is a great spot for an ambush of either diggers pretending to be bandits or creatures of the woods.

Perhaps an encounter with a friendly denizen of the forest who accuses the party of being part of the others who travel the path. Giving clues to what lies at the end of the journey as well as what is going on.

Finchford Woods – created in nightcafe

The Keep

Now I believe the keep should have high parts and lows. Places to hide and sneak through the entire ruins if desired as well as open places for combat. Broken walls could expose higher levels to climb into for an advantage. Uneven ground could give a disadvantage to people fighting across the ruins and even discarded tools and weapons could be hazards.

However the people that current work here, they are the ones to watch out for and the party would need to have a solid plan in dealing with them before engaging the group.

Unearthing the Past

Wednesday has come and tonight we have an exciting one where we flash forward to the party visit the ruins as a group continues Unearthing the Past. This will see the party investigate the sights, find the people behind it and come face to face with the dragon. So grab a coffee, sit down and let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

The sound of metal tools colliding with stone could be heard from a few hundred feet away. In fact the once thought to be quiet ruins was not quiet at all. As the party assumed there was more than just undead at ruins. The party crept closer; they wondered how such a volume of noise and people could go undetected. In fact from a distance the entire keep itself was dark and foreboding and silent as the grave. As they crept up towards the keep they moved silently. Bush to bush, behind rocks and shattered stone work they passed slowly and carefully. Eventually they stopped in the shadow of the ruins as they came across new constructs.

Small knee height pillars that were constructed from dark wood and capped with a dark metal, likely lead. Each one gave off a faint arcane feel but none revealed what it could be. However the moment they passed the pillars they marvelled at what lay in front of them.

Dozens of humans and creatures moved around the ruins. Great balls that glowed like moonlight hung suspended in the air around the walls shedding light around them. The orbs, driftglobes, revealed a great number of people excavating the ruins. In fact from the look of things, they had been here for some months toiling in secret.

Leaders of the excavation

โ€œWe found something!โ€ a voice sang from deeper in the ruins. Immediately people flooded away from the walls and external ruins towards the commotion. The party lucky to go undetected so far watched as several robed people stood from concealed places near the driftglobes. The robed strangers moved towards the call but waited in place, obviously watchmen for the work here.

The party crept closer, daring to move now when everyone was distracted to uncover the truth of the ruins. Looking through a small hole in the wall, a doorway most likely, a large internal courtyard revealed that the people here had been unearthing the past. โ€œWhat have you found?โ€ a young woman with a shock of vibrant, flowing hair asked as she approached the ruins of the outer wall.

โ€œWe thinkโ€ฆ It’s the dragonโ€ฆโ€ the voice responded as the crowd parted for the woman to walk forward. The party gazed upon the broken body of a large adult dragon still covered in muted red scales that had lay crushed under the remains of a tower.

Thanks for visiting tonight for the reveal of the week. Whilst not fully revealed yet I can’t have us uncovering the past of the keep this early on in the week. So this weekend we will continue on our excavating of the content and reveal more as we look at the map, encounter and end of week zine to come. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for more content and, as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Watchers of the Keep

Tuesday is here and as the dragon rises from the keep, or perhaps it doesn’t, there are those who simply bear witness and those who are watchers of the keep. While this week is about mystery, undead dragons and meat that’s suspiciously not lamb there are a few key NPCs that the party will want to encounter. This week is about them as much as it is fire breathing lizards. So to meet these characters we better settle in, grab a coffee roll into the adventure!

Marie Turnburke

Marie Turnburke – Created in Artbreeder

Born and raised in Finchford, Marie is the owner of The Five Fat Ravens Tavern. Once an adventurous youth she gave up on her dreams of exploration and uncovering mysteries and settled on feeding those who lived them. Business was good in Finchford and soon she had one of the more successful inns that was nearly booked out every week. Her food was a hit amongst the patrons but having a small stage for wandering bards is what really brought in the customers.

Live music, hearty food and tales of adventure was the theme of Marie’s inn. However despite her not pursuing her dream of adventure she still got to experience it. Living in the shadow of the ruins of the kings of old, the Dark Thrall Keep ruins had its perks. Many adventurers explore caves and the ancient forests in the area and the populace of the town always meant that there was adventure nearby. But darker tidings came with the proximity of the ruins and Marie kept a watchful eye on the empty battlements. And the sky.

James Herkorn

James Herkorn- Created in Artbreeder

Known as Jim in the town of Finchford James Herkorn is a curious man who always has his eyes on the skies. When not working the cities market square he can be found reading legends of old. A bit of a hermit and recluse Jim will occasionally be seen in bars listening to adventurers and buying them drinks. A gatherer of knowledge and stories he seems to believe that these titbits of information are worth more than the items sold through the market.

Thoughts

Now I have a good feeling about not only this weeks adventure but how Finchford is growing into something more. While the call to create a city of scale in Inkarnate is strong I don’t think time allows – but if there would be a city for it then Finchford would be it. Near ruins, forests, caves and a high populace is a recipe for constant, local adventure and a ‘billboard’ style adventure could be something I could create here.

Thanks for joining me tonight to meet Marie and Jim. This week we expand our adventure onwards as we look at the cause of the sightings tomorrow night and the maps of this weeks adventure. So don’t forget to come back for these expansions. As the weeks progress I am also painting more slaanesh and as my first unit of blissbarb archers near completion a little painting montage will have to be a theme this week. So keep coming back for mote tabletop updates and, try not to forget to roll with advantage,

Dark Thrall Keep

As this week’s Monday welcomes the twentieth week of the year it also seeks dark omens appear over Dark Thrall Keep. Now the history of a place with such a name would be enough to chill even the most veteran of parties. However what lies within its hallowed halls and in the secret walls is even more chilling. But, enough of me taking about things that may or may not happen. Let’s grab a coffee, sit down and roll on with the adventure.

Dark Thrall Keep

320MoDaThKe

Dark Thrall Keep – Created in Nightcafe.

Carrying out the large pot, nearly a cauldron she thought to herself with a laugh as she upended the dirty water into the back alley. The Pot had contained a stew that contained mostly Lamb, well lamb-like meat, and fed the Five Fat Ravens tavern patrons. As she scrubbed out the last stubborn burnt-on morsels of food she glanced up towards the old ruins that lay on the cliffs above the City of Finchford.

โ€œThe Dark Thrall ruinsโ€ฆโ€ She muttered to herself. The old keep was rumoured to have held the most holy of warriors during the age of King Parn the just. Marie had wanted to explore those ruins when she was a little girl manyย  years ago. She got close before her parents had found her and her childhood friend Rhyan. She still remembers how mad they were, but also the fear in her parents eyes. That was the day she learnt the other half of the tales of the keep.

After King Parn was murdered his knights pursued the killers and encountered a fearsome enemy, a dragon. They retreated to the keep to hope its walls, towers and weapons would save them but they were wrong. The Dragon managed to kill all the knights and destroy much of the keep but it also disappeared. As the Knights never finished their vengeance it’s rumoured that their ghostly figures haunt the ruins. But the other rumour is that the dragon sleeps below the rubble, waiting for hundreds of years as it heals.

The Keep

As she remembered the old stories, a moment of movement, a flicker of light from the keep brought her to focus. The distant rhythmic low rumbling sound seemed to flow down from the keep across the valley below. There, against the moon-lit clouds there was a shadow, a shape. Something dropped in her stomach as she watched a massive figure land against the keep, wrapping its large wings around the towering spire of stone as a growth resonated through the town like thunder. The remaining patrons inside the Five Fat Ravens Tavern went dead silent as they slowly wandered out of the tavern.

As the last patron walked into the back of another that had stopped just outside the building they all watched in amazement and terror. A dragon, as large as the keep crawled down the keep, another reverberating growl hit them like a shock wave as they watched the incarnate of death disappear into the ruins.

Only then did the panic hit the patrons of the Five Ravens Tavern and soon the surrounding buildings were awake and alarmed. But by the morning only the patrons of the Tavern had seen the Dragon. The City officials had ruled it too a night too full of grog and the patrons had all accepted it. For many more nights the dragon hadn’t appeared again, but Marie had seen it. She doesn’t drink or eat anything from the Tavern so those excuses didn’t work on her.

She had seen the Dragon and no one would believe her.

Thoughts

A great week inspired by another on-the-spot adventure prompt from my daughter. This weekend is about the once thought long-dead Dragon in the keep that rises at night to ‘eat people in the towns’. She is a bit of fascinated by zombies and large lizards considering the last prompt she gave me was the Cult of the Forgotten. But I will try to do this one justice, but there is a twist this time.

Thanks for coming to the start of another week of adventure here. Don’t forget that this week we will expand this adventure further. So make sure to come back nightly so you don’t miss out on a thing. As I continue to slog through painting dozens of Archers and daemons I will try and balance D&D and Warhammer at my tabletop and want to take it as a time to remind everyone to seek balance. “The first gift is hunger.
It is His blessing.
It is our call to bring death.
The second gift is death.
Death proves our strength.
Death purges our fear.
The third gift is fear.
We fear that we will fail him.
We fear the onset of hunger.”

The creatures that serve the dark lords of this existence are foul and atrocious creatures. Giving up their souls for the sake of power, passion or belief. But those creatures created by such beings – oh they are far worse.

Farlock

Farlock – Created in nightcafe.

As the party pass through the large walls that indicate the start of Farlock they gaze around the small walled village. The people here go about their lives seemingly content to live in the sun and amongst the pails suited to livestock and crop growth. The village had a bit of everything that people could expect a village of its size could. A small Inn, a few stores selling general supplies, a blacksmith that primarily deals with equipment and materials for the farmers and a houses.

However what they didn’t expect was a large gathering in the middle of the village as serval coffins were being wheeled out of town. Approaching the gathering the party could hear that they deceased, all young men of the village, were brutally slaughtered just outside the gate only the night before. Apparently the bodies were soo mangled and torn up that they had sealed the coffins to not upset the relatives or the villagers.

When the party asked what happened here everyone shrugged and claimed a wild animal attack, but those who spoke were hastily shushed by another in the crowd.

“They won’t speak about it to outsiders,” a voice said from behind, quietly as the party stood perplexed about the encounter. “They either don’t know or don’t believe what happened. But I can help. If you can help my brother he can tell you exactly what happened to those boys. He knows, he was there. The only survivor of the beast. My name is Salis, my family is village nobility, well we are nobles living in this village. We can pay for your time if you can help?”

Hobby update for May 13

After a long time putting it off I am finally making some progress on my Hedonites of Slaanesh. So for this hobby update for May 13 I have some updates!

Hobby update for May 13

Shardspeaker of Slaanesh

After owning the model since it came out I’ve finally managed to build and get some paint on it. Primed in Citadel wraithbone the theme is really to blend in with the Blissbarb Archers and other mortal units I have.

With many of the Slaanesh models being androgynous the high leather boots makes a statement. The smoke on the mirror, Dreadful visage contrast paint made short work of the smoke. With some armypainter matte white shaded with thinned aethermatic blue contrast gave the orb staff and potion a nice finish.

The metals gold was Retributor armour with a thin leviathan purple washed over. The Silver’s was Armypainter shining silver shaded with a 50-50 magos purple-leviathan purple wash. The metal on the knee-cap and mirror was instead washed with Reikland fleshshade.

The same Armypainter shining silver was used for the mirror with thinned Aethermatic Blue contrast paint as the wash.

Flesh was easy, thinned Guillimans flesh contrast. The black leather for boots and some straps was corvus black that helped add some darker tones to the model.

Striking scorpion green contrast for the green gems added a burst of colour. But the blue gems were Asurmen Blue contrast. The two red gems was actually the armypainter glistening blood technical paint. Adding a glossy red was a nice touch and drew the eye.

Lastly the clothing. Magos purple contrast for most of the robes with Leviathan purple contrast to darken some areas. The hair was also dreadful visage contrast paint. The helmets horns were also Corvus black and the miscellaneous leather bobs painted to match. And finally armypainter mummy robes was used for the scroll before it and the tactical stone she stands on was washed with agrax earthshade.

Blissbarb Archer

The same paints and general theme was used for the Blissbarb. The only additional paint used was Eladari Emerald contrast paint for the arrow feathers. The bow being Leviathan purple contrast and the shades Retributor armour gold really gave the model a sense of prestige

Thanks for joining me tonight for this Hobby update for May 13. With tomorrow being Mothers day I wish you a great weekend and ask you to not forget to spend with with your family as well as your hobby. And, lastly, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

The Gnolls of Yeenoghu

Another night of fighting has come and this Friday the weekend brings with us the Gnolls of Yeenoghu. Now the way that gnolls are created, if you want to look it up, is a bit gruesome but fascinating. This week is all about gnolls and the demon lord Yeenoghu’s hatred of civilisation. In his unchecked destruction the foes that remained gave birth to the first gnolls where hyenas feasted on the slain. From there the gnolls were born from hyena’s as they were transformed from the demons corruption. So before I get way to deep in my adoration for the lore on gnolls let’s roll into tonight’s adventure!

The Gnolls of Yeenoghu

319FrTGnOYe

The Gnolls of Yeenoghu

The Bloodhunt pack is normally gnolls and hyenas. But where the hyenas sup from tainted flesh and the corrupting energies aren’t quite right enough then other variations emerge. The energy being too strong then Witherings and Pack lords are born. Even Chosen of Yeenoghu can be created – however it is not always the case.

The scholars have recorded different variants of gnolls where under the right conditions, and given the right prey, gnolls fit for a purpose can be created.

Gnoll Stalkers

This sees the Gnoll stalker born. Small, about the size of a goblin or halfling but quiet and lethal these hunters and scouts of the bloodhunt are lethal. They ambush their prey with a volley of arrows before closing in to feast on their flesh.

Due to their size and being seen as lesser beings of Yeenoghu only Hyena’s tolerate being around them. The larger gnolls and even giant Hyena’s treat them as prey and fodder when no civilised race is within sight to bully or slaughter.

Gnoll Called to Yeenoghu

When a particularly favoured Giant Hyena feasts on a particularly tainted meal they have the chance to be called into Yeenoghu’s service. Whilst different to a gnoll, fang of Yeenoghu who can create gnolls much in the same way that their demon spawn-father created the first gnolls these gnolls are heralds to the demon in another way. The uncontrolled bloodlust and hunger for destruction reigns true for these creatures. However strong, powerful and desiring destruction they lack the cunning of other leaders of the bloodhunt and are seen as more shocktroops.

Closer in size to bugbears and ogres these creatures wade into battle and use their strength to bully and controll the smaller races.
