The priest of the Red Fleet

Welcome to NPC Tuesday where I hope we can meet a new NPC that I wasn’t exactly sure how I wanted to approach when I can up with the concept for this adventure, and you will see why soon.

Today we meet Lee Ping, the Red fleets resident priest and wise man who works with Kyoko to make sure the people of the Red fleet are successful and safe. He is older than what he appears and more than what he lets be revealed but he is a genuine soul who cares immensely for life and the spirits that guide and help us. So let’s look into his little cabin and introduce him properly with, what I can do for now, a placeholder image (created in the ever-useful heroforge!)

Lee Ping

203TuLePi

Lee moved through the murky, dim lit room as if he had lived here all his life. His quick and nimble limbs allowed him to effortlessly swing from beam to beam on the low ceiling to avoid some of the piles of books, papers, scrolls and ingredients for his alchemy as if he was walking on the ground. Stepping down in front of a large cauldron he began to sprinkle in powdered silver, wormwood, wolfs bane and several mushrooms as he began to rhythmically chant which causes a blue flame to bubble into life under the cauldron.

“Oh I must not forget the Maelroot leaf.” He said to himself as he whirled around to go to a pile of boxes that contained the foul smelling herb. As he turned though his long furred tail knocking off a vial of liquid from the bench. His quick reflexes kicked in and his right foot shot out and grabbed onto the bottle. The tail he had considered removing many times, ever since he lost the use of it in his youth from a disease that only now he fully understood – but it was too late for it. His feet though were a completely different story, the opposable big toe able to grip onto items, walls, rope or in this case, bottles as if they were a second set of hands. Grinning he passed the bottle to his right hand and placed it back on the bench before heading towards the box labelled Maelroot.

A knock at the door and a burst of light from the outside broke him out of his merry tune and he practically jumped onto the roof – his hands and feet gripping onto the worn wood held him close to the recesses in the ceiling.

A voice, several voices called out for him, the smell of fish, soot and a sour scent that only came from the people of Daye meant that he was caught out without his mask. As the people moved into the room he quietly crept along the ceiling to where heft his mask and red robe, the items that his people must wear at all times until it was deemed safe to reveal their true form. His simian features evident in the morning light he tried to keep to the shadows, his large nose proved useful in detecting small traces of what kind of people had visited his tent; adventurers, warriors and the sort of people that would only seek him out if they had been told to do so, or they thought his skills could be useful which meant either Hurane or Kyoko had sent them his way. Dropping to the floor quietly using his hands and feet to buffer this drop he quickly placed his head on and pulled his robe over the rest of his body to hide the abundant fur that grew thickly in patches on his arms, torso and face.

Standing straight he walked across the floor behind the party just as they reached his cauldron that was bubbling with the reagents within. Noticing the silvery bubbles and slightly green smoke coming from the pot he hobbled forward and grabbed the leaf that was missing. “Excuse me you lot, I must get this leaf in there so it doesn’t explode and cover you all with a green soot that taints your skin” he said as he pushed through the party – shorter than the people on average but about the same height of the dwarf and built like an elf, his kind were a folk of varied size depending on what part of the content they came from.

Now the monkey-folk, ape-folk and the like are a homebrew race that many people have done already but I must admit I enjoy creating new things rather than using someone else’s pre-existing template. Lee Ping and many of the masked traders, sailors and merchants are all from this beast-folk that have traits and aspects of monkeys. A long dexterous tail that has saved many of their kind from falling (and functions like a belt when needed!), strong feet with opposable toes that function like hands and keen senses that has come through form their bestial features which has kept them safe from the horrors that wander their homeland.

I picture these people as nimble and wise, not the most common of folk but found in most towns in small family units that pride themselves on their generosity and keen mind for trade and business. Not being shy from combat if required they tend to be more calculating than aggressive and know when to strike to best affect where the safety of themselves and those around them comes first.

Lee Ping in this case (yeah it’s not the best of the names I have given an NPC, but not the worst!) is a shaman or wise man – aging a bit slower than normal humans he has spent a long time understanding the world through the eyes of an alchemist so that he can better protect and aid people who are found deserving. Lee in this adventure will be able to use the freshly concocted brew to bless the weapons, for some time, so that they can prevent them from the creatures that are found on his homeland and now stalking the streets of Daye. Yeah, creatures.. But more on that later.

Tonight’s writeup was bit longer than last night but it flowed a bit more, I think that because the last few days, weeks…, that I have been writing the Red Fleet adventures I have been working up to this moment where I introduce some of the aspects that truly hooked me as an.. eleven year old boy staying in a hotel in Melbourne one Christmas. Back then the race was called the Vanara (or maybe the Hengeyokai monkey-hybrid) and for me that book was a font of inspiration but sadly, despite owning the book and adoring it I never actually got to play a campaign with it… But by creating one here on Brazen Wolfe Tabletop maybe other people can fulfil that long regret I have by playing through the adventure I create and letting me know how it goes. Let’s see if anyone manages to play this campaign setting that I am creating at the moment.

As with last nights post, let me know if you like this format, a bit of a story, a bit of a technical breakdown (where applicable) and the few smaller parts of an adventure that should take people through a few hours of play time, depending on the group of course, that work to build up to an adventure a month – or so. This is I believe the sustainable pace for me and what I have seen similar content creators doing so it should relieve a bit of time pressures on my end as work picks up as the year continues.

Don’t forget to let me know if you play through any of this content and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage!

Legacy of greed

Welcome everyone to Monday’s post on plots, drivers and adventure hooks. This week we will continue on with the 3rd part of the Red fleet Adventure where we look at the conclusion of the magic draining creature, the Gaki spirit.

This will be a relatively short part of the adventure focusing on the combat, (if the party didn’t manage to kill it already) and the aftermath. So let’s roll into it.

Keeping family traditions

203MoKFT

After sitting in silence for what felt like an hour Kyoko slowly opened the door and looked out at the deck of the ship. The red sails and rich wood were starting to show their colours as sunrise came in full bloom.

Turning to the adventures who had found themselves at the centre of the creature in Daye she sighed and sat down. “The seals that we place upon our doors and windows on our ships are meant to prevent river and sea spirits from entering and playing with our maps and instruments. I didn’t expect to face other creatures, well, spirits from our homeland over here but I am glad for the seals now.” She said as she opened a bottle of a pale, strong smelling wine.

“Hurane, check the merchants and look for those who have no seals on their boats. We will find the family during the day so we can prepare the family for the removal of this possession and send their ancestor back to the heavens to live in peace. We still dont know what type of spirit it is, my coin is on a Gaki but it may be a Baku or another yokai. The wards we have are mainly created with powdered silver, check with Takeo to see if his teachers have sent word.” She spoke after a minute of drinking the rice wine.

She then turned to the party. “If its offended by our wards we have a priest here who can bless your weapons with the same material. It will help you purify the yokai’s, a bad spirit,” she clarified, “essence so it can pass on. Please go seek out Lee Ping. He will know of which you ask for. I fear that tonight it will come again and angrier, especially if we remove the possession from its tether. Be prepared as they are known to be vengeful.”

The idea this week is to get the party to work with Hurane to talk to the families, of which there is one, and to meet Lee, a surprise for tomorrow and Thursday. This will give the party a goal and the means to defend themselves but the encounter wont be easy as with the previous night and the night before I would expect the party to not have had a full long rest yet.

Well that’s it for tonight, the beginning of the end for this multi-part adventure. If you like this approach more than a whole, different new adventure each week please let me know! I am still experimenting with how I want this blog to work and want to hear some thoughts!

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow and every day this week for more content and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Flight through the streets

Happy Sunday all, thanks for stopping by to have a look at our weekend write-up which has been worked towards all week.

This week we looked at what the reason is the creature is seeking out certain items and we met it, well, the party will have. So let’s look at how to play out this adventure!

Hungry Mists

202HuMi

_part:2 hunger pact_

The party find themselves being escorted back to their accommodations by Takeo. He wears his mask constantly when around people and answers questions directed at himself in a way that he gives information but never fully answers the question. Insight check (DC14) would reveal he is hiding things but not lying in what he is saying.

The other mission he has is to plant a lesser charm of tracking on the party. Passive perception 15 will notice the attempt and if he is called out on it he said he thought the party dropped the good luck charm and was giving it back.

That night the party are visited by the creature once they are asleep. If in separate rooms elves, those with passive perception of 14 or higher will awake to something in the room but it wont reveal itself unless that party member has something magical on them (items). If they do wake up due to the passive perception a dc12 charisma saving throw is required. If they pass they notice the creature, on a fail they don’t notice the creature but have an uneasy feeling of being followed or watched.

When it finds a magical item it will begin to feed, this process wakes up the party members in the room and they see a creature inhaling blue, green or red dust motes from something it holds in its hands.ย  Once the party wake up the creature will turn into its mist form and disappear through the ceiling or wall.

This happens twice more that night and on the third attempt the creature will lash out (attack roll) at the nearest player.

DM decision. Let the party go another night where they are visited again and if they interrupt the feeding again it will attack again. This depends on what the party want to do the following day and what other plans you have. When the party realise the creature is targetting magical items then have that day or the next day be the birthday ceremony and gift awarding for the priestess of Chauntea.

At this point Kyoko, Takeo and Hurane know of the creature and will answer questions from the party, but not what drives it. They dont know what it is exactlyย  only that it is a spirit from their home continent and it will feed on magical items to sustain its driving hunger.

After the priestess ceremony where she is awarded a magical necklace Kyoko will ask the party to try and persuade the party to join Kyoko for dinner, so she can watch over her as she believes the creature knows of the amulet and since it’s been denied meals the last few nights it will be aggressive.

The party can approach the priestess how they will but she wont leave until after she has conducted the dusk ceremonies. As they leave the temple with night falling the creature tries to attack the priestess but it keeps shying away at the last moment. Hurane or Takeo arrive and lead the Party to Kyoko’s ship where upon the creature won’t enter the main cabin.

IF the party fight and kill the creature (with anything other than silver) then a dark mist like cloak falls to the ground and a badly hurt Red Fleet merchant from the Ren family falls to the ground.

If killed by a silver weapon then the mist gets absorbed into the silver of the weapon and its gone.

Well that’s it for tonight, part 2 in our 3 part adventure for this month.

Upward comparison

Welcome to a Brazen Wolfe Tabletop random thought post tonight.

It’s not news to me that I procrastinate on my hobby, I recognise this and can tell when I do so. One of the many factors, which is most apparent to me tonight is upwards comparing myself to others in my hobby circle, particularly warhammer where a few members in my group have won local painting competitions, been features in the Games Workshop article’s for their painting as well as winning actual tournaments in Australia.

Now I consider myself a decent tactician and general. I generally have a positive win rate and make my opponents really fight to take the win from me but when it comes to painting I find myself incomparable with my gaming peers.

To be completely overt, I started painting miniatures in 2017 (poorly, base colours only, no layers or shades or highlights..) and have worked up to paint some miniatures I am actually Proud and happy to call my own work, but looking at the sea of unpainted miniatures, knowing what I want them to look like and also seeing what my friends can accomplish with the same size model, same tools and same amount of time I get dissuaded very quickly even if I can stand on equal (well equal enough) grounds with them on the battlefield.

Well this year I want that to change, I hope to kick-start my painting journey with the help of some absolutely fantastic painters this year where I hope they will be able to teach an old Wolfe new tricks. For me being able to look at a piece of art work, because thats the level of painting I consider my friends at, and be inspired instead of being dissuaded will be my biggest hurdle this year.. that and 200 skaven rats (or a certain lord of gluttony from Slaanesh I want to paint and paint well this year).

So my goal is to ramp up my painting and when I finish a model use the weekend posts to upload what I have accomplished, with the help and guidance of some very talented hobbyists locally.

This is currently what I could consider the best model(s) I have painted to have as a benchmark. Each I probably sunk half a day on to get to this state.

Stay tuned for updates in the future.

Don’t forget, as always, to roll with advantage,

Gaki – Hunger Spirit

Hi all and welcome to Fight-night (also known as Friday). Tonight I wanted to reveal the stat-block for the dark mist creature, touch on the tactics to employ with it (as there is no map as it could be encountered in any inn room, bed room, street or tavern floor etc.) as well as introduce Lizbet, the priestess of Chauntea.

So to roll like a weighted dice, let’s get on with the write-up.

Gaki – Hunger Spirit

202FrHuSp

The Gaki is the spirit of someone who left this world without achieving a great desire and being so driven to achieve this goal they hungered for it even in death. Normally these creatures die without having much to their name, no means to survive or achieve their goal so when they find themselves returned as one of the undead they immediately try and rectify this by, generally, approaching one of their family members and asking them to help the spirit complete it’s dying wish. In doing so they take possession of the body at night as they are fearful of what they will see in themselves come the morning light of the sun.

During the day the possessed creature has no signs that they carry something within them unless the creatures hunger or lust for their desired object is so great that the creature risks exposing themselves to sunlight to get at what they seek. At night however the almost malevolent hunger that fuels these creatures takes form of a great inky black mist that surrounds their host and turns their body of flesh and bones into something incorporeal, mostly. Its arms, hands and mouth are always physical (yet able to turn to mist to achieve its goals) and this gives the creature a nightmarish appearance at night.

The Gaki are so terrified of their own appearance that they avoid Silver, being mirrors, at all costs and unless driven nearly insane by their hunger they will flee at the mere sigh of silver whether it’s coins, weapons, jewellery, dining and cooking utensils or armour.

Although their hungers all differ they all have an affinity for destroying magical items as a way of fuelling themselves and their incorporeal form.

The Gaki, in this adventures instance, is also bound by wards made from liquified silver as the ‘magical wards’ appear as molten silver metal that reflects the very nature of their soul. Not even their hunger will let them pass wards made with this special liquid created by the Red Fleets alchemists and priests. The Gaki this adventure hungers for wealth and promised its family (who it resides within) that it would grant them wealth and success in business if they allow it to help them. However once surrounded by minor magical trinkets, and some not-so-minor, it became overwhelmed by its hunger for wealth and desire to obtain more and was driven into a feeding frenzy to sustain the amount of energy it was using in its pursuit of wealth.

Priestess Elizabeth ‘Lizbet’

The youngest priestess to be granted favour from Chauntea in the town of Daye for quite a number of decades she is seen to be a child of prophecy and as such is granted praise and status not readily given. This year her order and the town came together to celebrate her coming with age and organised a special gift from the visiting merchants known as the Red Fleet to celebrate her blessings and her age.

Despite the praise and gifts granted to her she is level headed, humble and only seeks to aid and teach Chaunteas blessings to those who are seeking it. She is warm, friendly and an excellent judge of character and as such is known to see the true intentions of those who would seek to mislead and trick her. This is aided by some of the magical trinkets that she keeps on her person that seek to keep her from harm and rumours of her power as a priestess has spread to neighbouring villages and towns.

Well that’s it for today. Some of the images for NPCs have started to look more and more similar as I tend to have a “Type” when creating a NPC. But non-the-less I hope you enjoyed to days content and hope I will see you in the following days reading the weekend writeups.

Charms, Talismans and pendants

Thursday has come and for us here at Brazen Wolfe Tabletop that means we are looking to something that adds a bit more to the adventure as we see it. The last few days we have looked at what the Red fleet is doing, what the party has gotten themselves into and what stalks the town at night. We have also investigated why it has been stalking the streets and tonight I hope to add a few small bits onto what the creature has been feasting on and what Takeo has put into the parties belongings.

So without any more drivel let’s get on with the content!

Charms

202ThCharm

The first on our list is what has become a staple of the Red Fleets merchandise and what the creature has mainly been feeding off. Luckily (or unluckily depending on how you view it) these items contain the smallest amount of magical power to them and so they do not sustain the creatures hunger for long.

Introducing the Lesser Blessed Charm!

This charm is seen and said to be a good luck charm for doing people who have a very certain need for something to be lucky in. If a Mayor needs luck during their next speech to sway the vote for an election they may be gifted with a Lesser Blessed charm of persuasion (which only works for the persuasion skill) which would be sold to them as a lucky charm that would make people more inclined to listen and believe what the speaker had to say. The same could be said for a squire who picked up the Lesser blessed charm of Animal Handling who wanted that extra bit of luck when working with horses, either her own or the person they served. These items sway luck in the favour of the owner but not enough to really be relied upon. Perhaps that occasional lucky motivational speech, game of cards or operation to save someone’s life can be tied back to the charm or perhaps its just the inherent skill in the owner – but we can all use a bit of luck some times.

The second item I have is designed to be rarer, harder to come by but not so strong that people would seek them out to abuse them. Introducing the Lesser charm of tracking!

The Lesser charm of tracking is quite simple, you have the charm and can know where it is. Sew it into your left sock and you will never lose that sock however the right sock may have a tendency to go missing.

In this case slipping it into a pocket of someone and using it to follow them around may be a bit sinister but also when used to keep track of important people, or people you want to keep an eye on it may be worth its weight in jade.

Thanks to joining me tonight and looking at a few minor magical items. The idea behind these is to add a bit more something to the adventure that wont break encounters or make that adventure you have planned for the party broken from the moment they find these little items.

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow and this weekend for more Dungeons and Dragons content and I hope to also bring a Warhammer battle report this weekend (if I can tee up a game on tabletop Simulator. COVID is a bit rampart in Australia at the moment and don’t quite want to risk an in person game.) Oh, and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Magic is fickle

Welcome to Wednesdays content where we look at the secondary hook, plot twist or influence to the adventure that we don’t see at the start of the week. So far this weeks section of the adventure has the party hounded by a mysterious creature who is hungry for their magical items and who has, in its rage, finally lashed out at the party members who prevent it from getting towards it’s target.

So let’s see what twist of fate, unlucky omen or dark tiding brings a sense of urgency of change in this weeks Wednesday post and let’s prepare for how the party can overcome it.

Dismissed omens

202WeDiOm

Kyoko frowned at lord Toshio as he walked towards the raised platform in the middle of the central square of the Town of Daye. She had warned lord Toshio that to bring the gift he had planned into the city was to insight wrath of the creature. However despite the warning lord Toshio insisted that this gift to the Daye Town’s priestess of Chauntea on her coming of age would bring favour back to the Red Fleet. Going as far to insist that this will enable them to remove these harsh restrictions that the town has imposed upon them Toshio seemed to be making a power play to take over the fleet.

Looking across the gathered crowd her eyes drifted over a hawk standing on a large flag pole, the creature stared at her before clicking its beak and turning towards the crowd of onlookers. Following its gaze Kyoko noticed the adventurers that she had run into and told of their problems, Takeo had told her that he had placed the charm with a simple location enchantment upon the party and that the creature had been drawn to it.

Since being interrupted when it was feeding on the item, or so the running theory was, it had grown more erratic and aggressive and even lashing out as it fled the last time it. If this creature seeks out enchanted or blessed items then the gift of the Red Fleet would make the young priestess a target. From what she can tell there wasn’t much magic in this town before now and their appearance and the influx of minor magical trinkets and talismans from the ships changed this. What she couldn’t work out is why none of their blessed or enchanted items on the ships had been targeted and it was to this reason that she wanted to talk to the adventurers before it was too late.

A tinge, a whisper on the air had her and the hawk whip their heads towards the crowd, the gift had just been received by the priestess, the bright red cloth taken from a wooden box and presented towards the maiden of Chauntea. Searching through the crowd for the source of the disturbance they saw nothing but her stoic masked people standing in respect for the ceremony and the jubilant people of Daye who were applauding the gift that had been presented to her.

Walking towards the disturbance she was so focused on seeking for the source of the whisper of dark omens that she bumped into the party of adventurers and the whispering stopped completely.

“We need to talk” she said to the party before grabbing one by the elbow and walking out of the crowd towards a quieter part of the square. She needed the party to be with the priestess to make sure that she would be safe and to escort them to her and the Lotus if the creature revealed itself.

This one is pretty straight forward – the priestess was presented with an enchanted gift from one of the wealthy merchants from the Red Fleet – Once revealed a dark omen (a whisper) was heard in the crowd but disappeared quickly. Kyoko wants to ensure that the priestess is safe but with the restrictions placed upon her people only the party can make sure she is safe but she doesn’t want to reveal what she knows to the guard and wider audience in case one of them is responsible for the creatures attacks.

The goal of this is to get the party to the priestess at the local temple to Chauntea at night, have them encounter a very angry spectral creature who attacks them but tries to get to the priestess who is wearing an ornate necklace AND to then have them and the priestess (or just the necklace) board Kyokos ship. If required Takeo can appear and urge the party to follow him back to the ship. The creature will pursue them to the ship but wont move as fast as them, always just behind them.

Well that’s it for tonight, investigated the next stage of the adventure, a small view of what is happening since the last part of the adventure and the next phase of it with a bit more information revealed.

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for Thursdays extra content and if you are liking this weeks writeups so far consider following or liking what you read. Oh, and as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

Meet the red fleet

Welcome to the second day of the week, Tuesday and with it brings some revelations, insights and a general meet and greet with NPCs that are inhabiting the world that our party finds themselves within.

Tonight we will explore the mysterious boy that has been tasked with watching the party, part of the Lotus branch of the red fleet and reports to Kyoko, amongst others but that’s for a different time. I also want to touch on something that I truly struggle with, NPC names and especially ones that haven’t been used before repeatedly. So let’s kick it off and dive right in!

Swift feet, steady hands

202TuTaMe

Climbing was easy for Takeo due to his ability to twist use his toes and grip onto objects and surfaces in the same manner his hands could. As he hung from a tree just outside of town he used some of the magic he was taught as part of his training to join the Lotus and altered how his eyes perceived the world. Blinking a few times to acclimatise his eyes he looked across the town at the market place where the group of adventurers he had been tailing to firstly confirm that they were not responsible for their current predicament and then to monitor them since the magic talisman had been slipped into their belongings. So far his suspicions had been confirmed, there is a creature that is responsible for the appearances in the people of Daye’s houses and the loss of their items. He was waiting for word to come back from his teacher about what the the creature could be, what was the best method to deal with it and its connection to magic items.

What puzzles Takeo was that the creature had not visited any of the Red Fleet ships which added to the cause of concern and suspicion from the guard and the people of the town. As he watched the adventurers moving, sluggishly after several nights of no sleep it seems, he couldn’t notice anyone following them, watching them or acting suspicious at all. Even some of the guards seemed cheerful and happy to have them in the town which surely meant that they had revealed the true nature of the thefts of items. Surely…

Releasing his grip on the wood he summersaulted and landed on is hands and feet crouching down as he continued to watch the group move bout the stalls and buildings as they made their way towards the Red Fleet ships moored at the pier. Slipping on his shoes once again and adjusting his mask back on to hide his face he surged the altering magic through his body again and sprung into the air as he took on the shape of a hawk – flying towards the ships and to report back to Kyoko on his findings. Who knows, maybe his teacher had sent word already and he could begin to devise a plan to confront this creature.

Names

So I struggle with names and the reason is that my players generally ask the name of people I didn’t have a plan for them to meet, a burden of running near-sandbox adventures. To counter this for this particular adventure, and the curiosity of moving into the Red Fleets ships and their stalls I will provide a few names for both male and females who could be merchants, sailors of potentially even other members of the Lotus organisation.

Male

  • Kakoto
  • Osamu
  • Ryota
  • Toru
  • Yasuo
  • Shin
  • Shen
  • Tadao
  • Ichigo
  • Toshio
  • Daiki
  • Eiji
  • Kei
  • Jun
  • Kenta
  • Hideo
  • Hiro
  • Isamu

Female

  • Aika
  • Rei
  • Ren
  • Yuriko
  • Ume
  • Mi
  • Chiyo
  • Chia
  • Hotaru
  • Maiko
  • Naoki
  • Shinju
  • Asami
  • Emiko
  • Hana
  • Saki
  • Sakura
  • Orihime

A few of those you may recognise from Anime (kudos to you for fine tastes in anime) but they do suit the genre and feel I want for this part of the adventure and since these, for me, are uncommon names to encounter in my day to day life (except a few mind you…) I find that I struggle with coming up with these names in a pinch. Also, full disclosure, these names (most of them) can be found on page 187 of Xanathar’s guide to everything, certainly a useful book to have.

Bonus – Character portrait of Kyoko

Well that’s it for me tonight, I hope you enjoyed the content and can make use of what was put up. Don’t forget to let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions and I hope to see Brazen Wolfe Tabletop expand this year into something bigger and better!

Dark omens

Welcome to a new week here at Brazen Wolfe Tabletop and as with most new weeks it starts with Monday. Monday here means that we look at plot hooks and those adventure triggers that get the party moving in one direction to achieve a goal.

Last week we looked at a mysterious mist creature that would enter peoples houses and, from what we revealed, consume magical items as a way of a food source (perhaps, who knows..) So this week let’s continue on from there and look at the next step of the hunt for the creature and a way to clear the name of the Red Fleet and their leader Kyoko Harimasu.

Chasing mist

202MoChMi

As the party leave Kyoko’s room on the boat they are shown back to where they were staying by the boy again but not before the boy slips a small magical charm into the pocket of one of them (a hawk with stretched wings where the feathers touch to form an arch.

As they see the inn they realise the boy has disappeared (Passive Perception DC14 or an active check would have heard the flutter of wings faintly). That night the party members may (DC14 passive perception) notice a dark mist drifting down the walls, DC10 if they have dark vision) when the last of the lights have gone out. If they watch the mist the creature wont reveal itself and it will disappear however if they ignore the mist, don’t see it or fake not noticing it then the creature will reveal itself.

Once revealed creatures within 10ft need to make a DC12 Charisma save or they remain unconscious/asleep or they remain unaware of the creatures presence. They can re-take this test if something (a sound such as the creature finding a magical item it will begin to feed and this makes a sound like a wind being pushed through a small crack in a wall) with advantage the second time around.

The creature hates silver and will flee from mirrors or silver weapons or jewellery immediately but seeks out magical items (such as the hawk talisman). If the PC has a magical item they will (no roll needed) notice something in the room with them looking over their items. If it’s discovered they will find a magic item displaced and strange pox-like marks. This doesn’t damage the item but it looks like it would be irreversibly damaged if the creature was to finish its hunt for the magical items.

The creature will generally only visit one Party member if un-disturbed but if all party members have a magic item it will visit each of them until it’s discovered or its destroyed the magical items.

If the party find the creature it will disappear through the roof whilst emitting a hollow shriek. If it was disturbing devouring a magical item it will revisit that character again to try and slake its thirst but it will increasingly grow more violent the more times it is denied its meal. Eventually attacking the party members who come between it and the magical item.

Now that the creature has it’s sights set on the party they need to decide what to do about it, if they report it to Kyoko or the guards (or both) and how they will get rid of the creature. Changing inns/ taverns or sleeping arrangements won’t stop it from finding them and it will reappear each night just as the last lights go out.

Well that’s where we are going to leave it for tonight with plenty of wriggle room for me to update and expand this weeks content as the days go on. Thanks for joining me tonight and if you like what you are seeing here, and aren’t already, consider following the blog for daily updates. If you have followed me don’t forget to come back tomorrow for the next days instalment where we look at the NPCs that may be interacting with the party and what they can do for our party just as much as what the party can do for them.

And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,

2022 hobby goals

Hi folks, today I wanted to touch on my hobby goal’s.

1st goal is to finish my flesh eater army. I have a bit over 2000 points painted by have several thousand points unpainted.

2nd goal in make note terrain for dungeons and dragons and Warhammer as they are nearly the same scale

My last two goals are maybe more of a stretch. Paint one of my other Warhammer armies to completion and look to writing a few more zines this year and find a artist to illustrate them.

The first two are relatively easy goals since my flesh eater courts colour scheme is easy and terrain is pretty straight forward pending time. The last two are hard for to the time sink, the resources and the decisions I need to make in order to complete those goals.

Either I hope to be able to show off one or more miniatures each weekend of what I painted on the table that week and periodically publish a Zine to be used by aspiring Dungeon Masters to help them learn the ropes.

Well not much of a narrative or action packed update today but tomorrow starts the next week for content so do make sure to come back tomorrow for it.

And as always, don’t forget to roll with advantage,
